Abstract:
The war of the Romans with King Pyrrhus of Epirus was a kind of borderline that conditionally divided the history of Roman republic into two main periods. Many modern researchers follow the concept of the Greek historian Polybius, who considered the expulsion of the Epirus king from Italy as the start of the gradual establishment of Roman hegemony in the Mediterranean. The further expansion of Rome, first to the South of Italy, and then outside – to Sicily, was accompanied by an internal political struggle between two groups in Roman society, one of which defended the agrarian development of R

Summary In relation to King Pyrrhus of Epirus, a great number of studies have analysed his different military campaigns, but very few have focused on the political and economic aspects of his reign. Based on a series of references taken from literary accounts, we seek to demonstrate how the internal organisation of the Kingdom of Epirus under Pyrrhus was similar to that of other contemporaneous Hellenistic kingdoms, replete with a Court consisting of a large number of the king’s friends and companions. Pyrrhus, the ruler of Epirus, led an expedition against the Roman Republic and in defense of Tarentum in 280 B.C. He commanded inadequate and accidentally collected sea forces, as argued by Plutarchos of Cheronea, Pausanias, Appianus, Iunianus Iustinus and Diodorus Siculus. During the crossing to Sicily, Pyrrhus came into confl ict with Carthage, avoided clashing at sea with a larger Punic fleet of 100 ships thanks to a clever maneuver, and entered Syracuse afterwards. At the Grand Harbor, he captured 120 warships (κατάφρακτοι ἑκατὸν εἴκοσι) and 20 ships (ἄφρακτοι εἴκοσι), with his fleet’s str

The Ethnic Character of Ancient Epirotes and MacedoniansThe inhabitants of Epirus and Macedonia were treated as “barbarians” by ancient Greeks (so Hecataeus of Miletus, Herodotus, Thucydides, Ps.-Scylax, Ps.-Scymnus, Strabo, and others). According to Plutarch (Pyrrhus I 3), the intensive hellenization of Epirus started with Tharrypas’ reign in the end of fifth century BC. According to Strabo (VII 7.8), ancient Epirotes and Macedonians spoke the same language but some of them were bilingual. This means that the original language of Epirotes and Macedonians was non-Greek, but they used Greek in

Some regions of Ancient Hellas, located on the border of the barbarian and Greek worlds and lagging behind in political and cultural terms, sought to prove their «Greek» origin in one way or another. This was especially true of the royal dynasties, which, deriving their genealogy from mythical heroes, thereby substantiated their claims to Greek origin. A similar example is the Molossian dynasty of the Aeacids, ruling in Epirus, which traced its origins to the mythical hero Neoptolemus, son of Achilles. In 281 BC, Pyrrhus was visited by an embassy of Tarentum and by the representatives of the Samnites, Lucanians and Bruttians. For the King of Epirus, Italy and Sicily meant a new prospect for his career, since the delegates undertook the obligation to give under his command a powerful army, composed of 300,000 infantrymen and 20,000 horsemen. Protecting Tarentum against the Roman aggression was only the official reason of his Western campaign. By the starting years of the First Punic War, the accounts of the ancient literary tradition about Rome’s involvement in maritime affairs are scarce and lack the necessary clarity. The first two Roman-Carthaginian treaties from 509 and 348 B.C. mention navigation bans for the Roman ships; however it is very likely for the two agreements to refer to the trading vessels. The year 311 B.C. records the official foundation of the Roman naval force by the establishment of a double naval magistracy, duumviri navales. Through exhaustive examination, this paper posits that the most likely birthdate for Pyrrhus is March 23, 319 BCE.
