Abstract:
The Galenic account of medicine by Ibn Sīnā (d. 427AH/1037CE) was remarkably significant for natural philosophy and religious thought in the medieval Islamic world. Just as one might split philosophy in the Islamic world into eras before and after Avicenna, so one could periodise medical history into the time before and after Ibn Sīnā’s glorious al-Qānūn fī al-Ṭibb (Canon of Medicine). This article compares the medical theory in al-Qānūn fī al-Ṭibb and al-Dhahabī’s (d. 748/1348) al-Ṭibb al-Nabawī to determine if the medieval al-Ṭibb al-Nabawī genre was influenced by the post-Avicennian tradition. To assess this theoretical impact on the writing in the prophetic medicine genre, the article first analyses the introductory part of both writings, as well as the subsequent developments in al-Ṭibb al-Nabawī writings. This will form a comparative view of the medieval anatomical and philosophical positions. Given that traditional prophetic medicine is the focus of the al-Ṭibb al-Nabawī genre, the article turns to the question of medical theory, did al-Dhahabī really observe this topic? What role does medical ḥadīth play in determining how Muslims should approach classical theories of medicine? By comparing these two works, one can see that al-Dhahabī’s al-Ṭibb al-Nabawī developed in interaction with and extension of the al-Qānūn fī al-Ṭibb, as well as an attempt to bring forth a new form of medicine, that would integrate Ibn Sīnā’s medical theory with Prophetic ḥadīth.

Abstract:
Abstract The present article brings to the scholarly attention the Avicennian manuscript San Lorenzo de El Escorial (Madrid), Real Biblioteca del Monasterio de San Lorenzo de El Escorial, 621, by conveying a basic description of its codicological features and by locating it in the wider context of the connection metaphysics-medicine that the transmission of Avicenna’s magnum opus Kitāb al-Šifāʾ (Book of the Cure/Healing) displays. The manuscript at stake is the only extant, though incomplete, codex of the Ilāhiyyāt (Science of Divine Things) of Avicenna’s Šifāʾ presently known in the Iberian peninsula (Spain and Portugal), and one of the few codices of the Šifāʾ housed there. In its present state, it cumulates metaphysics and medicine, since it joins some excerpts of the Ilāhiyyāt with fragments of the commentaries on Avicenna’s Al-Qānūn fī l-ṭibb (Canon of Medicine) by Ibn al-Nafīs al-Qurašī (d. 687 H/1288) and by Quṭb al-Dīn al-Šīrāzī (634–719 H/1236–1311). The part of the commentary on Avicenna’s Canon by Ibn al-Nafīs al-Qurašī preserved in this manuscript contains a revealing critical quotation of a medical tenet which Avicenna discusses in the Šifāʾ; this criticism very likely represents an instance of the ‘rectification’ of Avicenna’s philosophical encyclopedia of which Ibn al-Nafīs is credited in historical sources. The example of the revision of Avicenna’s philosophy by Ibn al-Nafīs analyzed on the basis of this manuscript makes clear that physicians in the XIII century did not limit their familiarity with Avicenna’s works to the Canon of Medicine and the other medical works of Avicenna, but adopted some kind of all-encompassing approach to Avicenna’s oeuvre, which did not eschewed tackling critically also the Šifāʾ on the basis of a profound and extensive knowledge of the Šayḫ al-raʾīs’s philosophical masterpiece.

Este artículo es un estudio piloto para una comparación sistemática entre el texto árabe y latino del Qānūn fī aṭ-Ṭibb de Avicena. Con este propósito, ofrecemos una edición preliminar de un pasaje del Tercer Libro de esta gran enciclopedia médica en la traducción latina preparada por Gerardo de Cremona en Toledo en la segunda mitad del siglo XII. El análisis de este fragmento nos permite describir con rigor aspectos clave de la técnica de traducción de Gerardo de Cremona, al mismo tiempo que pone de relieve problemas interpretativos vinculados a la difícil exégesis de las teorías médicas árabes sobre la enfermedad conocida como frenitis o frenesí.

Abstract:
Ibn Sīnā is one of the prominent scholars in the Muslim scientific world. In the West, he is well known as Avicenna. As a polymath, he wrote many books in a broad range of sciences. Al-Qānūn fī aṭ-Tibb (the Canon of Medicine) and Kitāb Ash-Shifā’ (the Boook of Healing) are considered to be his magnum opuses. While the former is his greatest work on medicine, the latter is his monumental contribution to science and philosophy. Kitāb Ash-Shifā’ is concerned with four main subjects: logic (al-manṭiq), natural sciences (aṭ-ṭabi’iyāt), mathematics (ar-Riyaḍiyāt), and metaphysics or theology (al-Ilāhiyāt).

Ibn Rushd consideró la medicina como un arte productivo en su al-Kulliyyāt fī l-ṭibb, escrito entre 1162 y 1169, y como una ciencia en su comentario al poema de Ibn Sīnā sobre la medicina (Sharḥ Urjūzat Ibn Sīnā fī l-ṭibb), escrito en 1180. En Kulliyyāt, Ibn Rushd sigue de manera bastante estricta las ideas sobre el estatus de la medicina del filósofo al-Fārābī. En Sharḥ Urjūzat Ibn Sīnā, Ibn Rushd sintetiza las concepciones de varias obras, entre las cuales Masā’il fī l-ṭibb de Ḥunayn ibn Isḥāq y Ḥubaysh, Qānūn fī l-ṭibb de Ibn Sinā y las obras sobre la lógica aristotélica de al-Fārābī. El análisis conjunto de estas fuentes, más las aportaciones de un nuevo manuscrito de Sharḥ Urjūzat Ibn Sīnā, proporcionan una idea más clara de la concepción de la medicina expuesta en esta obra y, en consecuencia, podemos reconsiderar y relativizar la diferencia entre esta concepción y la que se expone en Kulliyyāt. Abstract:
This article investigates developments in medical literature through Ibn Sīnā’s Poem on Medicine (al-Urjūza fī al-ṭibb) to demonstrate how the Poem’s unique organization represents a different, practicable work. While Ibn Sīnā’s Canon of Medicine (K. al-Qānūn fī al-ṭibb) has traditionally been used to understand his approach to medicine, this article argues for a different Ibn Sīnā as seen through his Poem to show that the Poem should not be subordinated to the Canon. As the first comprehensive treatment of the Poem, it contextualizes the Poem in the medical literary tradition of the Islamic world followed by an analysis of the Poem’s structure. Finally, through a study of how this structure compares with other works, it establishes how the Poem is different from these other works to present a different Ibn Sīnā. In doing so, it hopes to draw interest to the role of textual agency in the conceptualization of medical literature.

La thèse s'intéresse à l'analyse du lexique technique du Canon de la médecine d'Avicenne (al-Qānūn fī al-tibb d'Ibn Sīnā). L'objectif est de définir les méthodes de création des termes médicaux en langue arabe et de découvrir les principes de définition des termes à partir du lexique relevé dans cet ouvrage. Pour ce faire, cette étude ; porte dans l'ensemble, sur les termes arabes et les termes empruntés aux diverses langues telles que : le grec, le persan, le latin, l'hébreu, le syriaque et le sanscrite. Il en ressort qu'Avicenne est allé au-delà du travail de médecin en proposant une approche terminologique et néologique dans son livre
This thesis focuses on the analysis of the technical lexicon developed by the Canon of medicine of Avicenna (al-Qānūn fī al-tibb d'Ibn Sīnā). The objective is to identify the methods used in the creation of medical terms in the Arabic language. The thesis also aims at discovering the principles utilized to define those terms starting of this lexicon of this book. The main scope of the study therefore is the Arabic terminology and the terms which were borrowed from various common languages at that time, namely: Greek, Persian, Latin, Hebrew, Syrian and Sanskrit. The conclusion is Avicenna went beyond being a physician and worked in the linguistic development of medical terminology
