Abstract:
This study aimed at investigating vocabulary size and lexical growth of Saudi EFL students at Qassim University. The primary goal of this research was to examine the vocabulary sizes of English students at Qassim University. The participants consisted of 60 second and fourth year English department students at Qassim University in Saudi Arabia. As this study focused on the vocabularies of Saudi EFL learners, the XK_Lex test was selected as the instrument of measurement. Participants were asked to complete the XK_Lex vocabulary test with its yes/no format, and data was then collected and analyzed statistically. The data analysis showed that the second-year students have a vocabulary knowledge of approximately 2000 words, while senior students know about 3000-3800 words. The results also confirmed that the students possess more word knowledge as they move onto higher years at an appropriate rate. Thus, these results suggest that vocabulary knowledge can be used as an indicator of the students’ progress and academic achievements.

Abstract:
Objectives: Given the rapid pace of globalization and the emergent geopolitical dynamics, communication has taken a new dimension. Translation is also one aspect of this. Today, world of translation has come a long way from the grammar-translation approach to machine-assisted translation and the human interface that lies somewhere between these two extremes. For Saudi Arabia, translation in academic and research fields is a relatively new entrant and, therefore, one that calls for continuous evaluation and examination in terms of quality and shortcomings. In institutions of higher education, outstanding academic and research titles and works are frequently being recommended for translation to English. However, the titles are a big casualty in this exercise as the same title(s) is/ are translated twice at College and Deanship levels, bringing about discrepancies of style, form, and content which cause ambiguity in the classification of the work. Working with forty such titles approved by the Qassim University, the study rates the translations and identifies the loopholes in the translations. Overall, it is concluded that the translations at the Deanships are almost perfect while those at the Colleges, being word for word translations, are erroneous, misleading, and poor in the target language. The study concludes with some pertinent recommendations.

Abstract:
BACKGROUND Visual disability is one of the most significant global health concerns. One of the studies conducted in northern part of Saudi Arabia showed that the prevalence of visual disability in adult population of 23.5 %. Very few studies have been conducted in Saudi Arabia to determine the prevalence of visual disability in the younger population. We wanted to determine the prevalence of visual disability in students studying at Qassim University. We also wanted to study and compare the utilization of compensatory rehabilitation by the students of urban and rural areas and the subjective response of beneficiaries. METHODS This study was done from September 2011 to May 2012, in the Department of Optometry in Qassim University, Buraidah, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. A crosssectional retrospective review from the records of 642 male students referred by the deanship of student’s affairs to the optometry clinic were studied. RESULTS The prevalence of visual disability in this study was found to be 2 %. Out of the total 642 students, a significant number of students [541 (84 %)] benefited from the scheme and 101 (16 %) were declared normal. Those who were declared visually disabled (2 %) were getting compensation on monthly basis and the remaining 82 % with mild to moderate visual problems benefitted with spectacles. More number of urban students were suffering from visual abnormalities (87.6 %) as compared to rural students (45.1 %). CONCLUSIONS Though visual disability among young population at Qassim University was found to be low as compared to adult population is Saudi Arabia, it is recommended to conduct regular check-ups for visual acuity and plan to reduce the magnitude of the problem. A significant number of students utilized the compensation and rehabilitation program provided by the department of optometry. The aim of this research is to identify the components and practices of university social responsibility (USR) – a concept based on corporate social responsibility - and its impact on development and sustainability. Here, it is necessary to develop a new perception of universities, in which we learn, develop and act. This work results from an exploratory approach based on a literature review and observations at Qassim University. The first stage of this research will adopt a qualitative approach, to identify and understand how USR is defined by the university community. The main goal of this stage is the development of items which will be used to measure USR at Qassim University. The second stage is a quantitative approach applied through administration of a questionnaire. A hypothesis test is elaborated by LISREL 8.52 according to a structural equation model (SEM) in which corporate social responsibility is considered a mediating variable between development and sustainability. From this research, a critical path for USR can be defined based on practices. We will also be able to recommend a pathway for sustainable development based on USR.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT The objective of the current research was to assess and gain insight into the perceptions held by dental students enrolled in the clinical program at Qassim University regarding the specialty of oral and maxillofacial surgery (OMFS). A survey-based cross-sectional study was carried out at the dental clinics of Qassim University, following approval from the Dental Research Center of the university. The study targeted a population consisting of 80 dental interns and undergraduate students (BDS) enrolled at Qassim University. From each academic year (third year to interns), a random selection of 20 students was made, ensuring representation from both male and female sections. Upon analyzing the data regarding the intern and class year of dental students, it was found that there were no statistically significant associations with regard to question 3: “What do you perceive as the most commonly performed procedure by oral and maxillofacial surgeons in practice?” (P = 0.759a). Among intern and dental students, a significant majority identified extraction of the third molars as the most frequent procedure carried out. The lowest percentage (70.4%) was reported among the intern classes, whereas the highest percentage (91.7%) was reported among the fourth-year students. The perceptions of dental students toward OMFS undergo changes during their undergraduate training. By gaining a deeper understanding of these perceptions, the academic faculty specialized in OMFS can enhance their ability to educate students and, in turn, strengthen the overall specialty.

Abstract:
This study investigates the factors that affect traffic safety in the Qassim region. A questionnaire was developed on the basis of the Handbook of road safety and consisted of 85 items measuring seven dimensions: area-wide traffic calming (22 items), vehicle design and protective devices (26 items), road design (24 items), road maintenance (three items), traffic education (four items), police campaigns and sanctions (three items), and post-accident care (three items). A sample encompassing 1,500 Qassim University students, and visitors was randomly selected to collect data. A total of 1,500 questionnaires were distributed to students, and visitors of which 1,053 were retrieved. The elimination of data outliers resulted in a sample of 909 subjects. The results pointed out a moderate level of traffic safety in the Qassim region. Furthermore, 10 leading causes of road traffic accidents emerged, namely, excess speed, irregular bypasses, irregular rotations, lack of prioritization of other drivers, irregular stops, lack of road readiness, driver carelessness, use of a mobile phone while driving, noncompliance with traffic signals, and, finally, nonuse of seat belts. On the basis of these results, conclusions and policy implications were provided.

Abstract:
This study explored students' own perspectives on their writing challenges. A mixed methods research design combining a quantitative questionnaire with a series of semi-structured qualitative interviews was used. Therefore, the triangulation of data collection techniques was applied in this research. The study was conducted in the Department of English and Translation at Qassim University. 55 students filled 32 items questionnaire and ten were selected for the interview. For the questionnaire data, the descriptive statistics for ordinal Likert-type data include frequency, median, and mode were used. For the qualitative data analysis, the thematic coding was used for analyzing the interview. The obtained results showed that there are different types of writing problems among English language and translation major students at Qassim University. Findings suggest that some difficulties and perspectives are broadly shared by Saudi English students, e.g. struggles with irregularity and the non-phonemic nature of English. Other difficulties tend to evolve as students proceed in their studies. The lack of research into Saudi perspectives on English writing difficulties is emphasized, and further scholarly attention is strongly advised.

Abstract:
The present study is an attempt to determine the effect of teaching sight translation to the students of the undergrade level at Qassim. The discussion and development of the phases and stages of teaching sight translation (ST) compared to other types of interpretation, such as simultaneous interpretation and consecutive interpretation, reveals its utility and effectiveness. The study claims the process of sight translation to be more effective than the other two types. The students call for the use of written material that they consider helpful and not distracting. This study used the descriptive method to fulfil its aims. There were about 14 male students in the 8th level of Qassim University in Saudi Arabia who participated in the study. The students were requested to answer questionnaire questions aimed at pointing out the difficulties and challenges they might face as students of the B.A. in English language and Translation while studying sight translation. After an examination, the students of Qassim University were asked to express their opinion on a sight translation text of 200 words. The results show that the Saudi dialect has an impact on the output. However, the majority conducted the test with high training skills. Some exercises proved that focusing on personal capabilities such as the tone, the speed of the speaker, and the emotions helps develop the teaching of sight translation. These exercises also emphasize that sight translation must be taught parallelly with the other modes and types of interpreting, as sight makes the obvious link between a written text and the oral aspect and feature of the other types.

Abstract:
The study aimed to explore the role of faculty members at Qassim University in digital volunteering in light of Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030, as well as to identify the obstacles they face and ways to enhance their role in this field. The researcher employed the descriptive survey method and developed a questionnaire consisting of 45 statements, which was administered to a simple random sample of 271 faculty members. The results indicated that the role of faculty members at Qassim University in digital volunteering was achieved to a moderate degree, with a mean score of (2.70). The obstacles they face were found to be at a high level, with a mean score of (3.57). The main obstacles were the faculty members' involvement in research and teaching duties, which reduce opportunities for digital volunteering, the difficulty in allocating sufficient time for digital volunteer work, and the lack of media campaigns supporting digital volunteering activities. Furthermore, the participants agreed to a high degree on the ways to enhance the role of faculty members in digital volunteering, with a mean score of (3.99). The most significant enhancement strategies included the university establishing partnerships with community institutions to provide digital volunteer projects that align with faculty members' specializations, offering specialized training courses on digital volunteering as part of faculty professional development programs, and providing a range of digital volunteer projects suited to the university environment.

Abstract:
This study explored the efficacy and role of interlanguage feedback practices to and from EFL learners’ perspective at Qassim University which is a large university with a diverse Arabic speaker learner group. It also gauged the correlation between using interlanguage feedback practise, tolerance of language ambiguity and motivation to learn among the participants. A convenience sample of 48 EFL undergraduates at Qassim University were encouraged to judiciously adopt interlanguage in giving and receiving feedback in the EFL class for a period of eight weeks. Thereafter, a questionnaire was used to gather information on the predictors for interlanguage use in feedback and their outcomes on learning perceptions of the learners. Results indicated that students have moderate perceptions towards practicing interlanguaging feedback. Results also reported positive and moderate direct correlation between practicing interlanguaging feedback, tolerance of ambiguity and learning motivation. This was reflected in foreign language ambiguity tolerance, followed by learning motivation. Results also helped conclude that in the Saudi EFL context, an English-only classroom is not yet suitable to optimize learning, given the learners’ learning style and prevalent pedagogical methods, and as far as interlanguage use in feedback mechanisms is concerned, learners are positive to the idea as it aids in achieving their learning goals.

Abstract:
Language learning strategies (LLS) play a significant part in learning a second or foreign language. These strategies support and simplify the process of language learning for students. Hence, this study endeavors to investigate LLS applied by students at the Department of English Language and Translation, Qassim University in learning English language as a foreign language. The present study applied “Strategy Inventory for Language Learning” (SILL), which was established by Oxford (1990) to collect data. 30 students from level four took part voluntarily, and later data was analyzed to provide means, distribution of frequencies, standard deviation, percentages, and total scores of data set. The study discloses that EFL students were accustomed to the whole six LLS groups. Moreover, the study also reveals that some students used more LLS than other students, although the difference was significant across all students. These LLS groups are; “compensation, social strategies, affective, cognitive, metacognitive, and memory with a medium level of frequency use for over-all strategies (M = 3.49)”. The most repeatedly applied strategies by students of level four from these six strategies are as follows from the top “metacognitive, compensation, social, memory, cognitive, and affective strategies”. The findings would help teachers and students to be aware of LLS while in teaching and learning English as a foreign language.

Abstract:
Writing is considered a very important learning tool for all content areas. There is no doubt that writing skill is essential for any kind of learning either at the school or the university level. Therefore, the present study attempted to explore the possibility of improving university students’ one of writing sub-skills, known as coherence through emoji. Coherence in the students’ writing was measured according to the students ability to a) use repetition to link ideas, sentences, and paragraphs, b)use transitional expressions to link ideas, sentences, and paragraphs, c) use pronouns to link sentences, d)use synonyms to link ideas and create variety, e) use parallel structures to link ideas, sentences, and paragraphs. The sample of this study was randomly selected from the Third Level female students joining the Department of English at one Saudi public university. The selected subjects were assigned randomly into control group and experimental group. After administrating the pretest for the two groups, the experimental group was given a six-week treatment of emoji meant for improving the writing sub-skill, while the control group was taught writing without using emoji. One week after the treatment, a posttest was administered to the two groups. Results revealed significant difference between the students’ scores in writing in favor of using emoji to improve students’ writing skills. Thus, the findings show the effectiveness of using emoji in improving students’ coherence in writing. The results were used to draw some conclusions and to suggest some recommendations for teaching writing using emoji. The results also recommend further researches to be done on using emoji to improve other language skills and sub-skills.

Abstract:

Dictionaries are an indispensable tool for learning a foreign language in general. Dictionaries provide students with valuable information in all aspects of language. They include phonological, morphological, syntactical and semantic information in addition to etymological and usage information. Unfortunately, there is currently a paucity of research on dictionary use by EFL learners and very little is known about the behavior and preferences of dictionary users and the complex operation involved in a dictionary consultation. The main objective of this study is to identify types of dictionaries used by Saudi students, the frequency of dictionary use, and the lexical information examined while using a dictionary. Two data-collection instruments were used in this study, namely a questionnaires and interviews. The results of the questionnaire show that Saudi students do not take full advantage of the different dictionaries available, and that they are not trained on how to make full use of the dictionaries. For example, most of them pay attention only to the definition or meaning of a word while neglecting the pragmatic aspect of the word, collocations as well as word formation knowledge. Results also indicated the superiority of the e-dictionary over the other types of dictionaries. Another more important finding was that participants favored bilingual dictionaries over monolingual dictionaries particularly when finding meaning of unknown words. Other information such as pronunciation, usage, and examples was of secondary importance. The final conclusion reached reported some difficulties that the students face when they use dictionaries. The results suggest that failure to locate the right entry is a common problem among Saudi EFL students. The implications of these and other findings are discussed and suggestions made regarding the importance of teaching dictionary skills in educational settings.
