We evaluated the effect of Bu-Zhong-Yi-Qi-Tang, a prescription of traditional Oriental medicine, and its major ingredients on protection of the intestine and hematopoietic organs against radiation damage in this study. The jejunal crypt survival, endogenous spleen colony formation, and apoptosis in jejunal crypt cells were investigated in mice irradiated with high and low doses of γ-rays. Bu-Zhong-Yi-Qi-Tang administration before irradiation protected the jejunal crypts (p < 0.0001), increased the formation of the endogenous spleen colony (p < 0.05) and reduced the frequency of radiation

Oracle-bone scholars have long uniformly read the charges (i.e., the portion that mentions the event being divined) of Shang oracle-bone inscriptions as questions. Since the 1970's, many foreign oracle-bone scholars have proposed a new view that the charges are never questions, or at least are generally not questions. Whether or not the charges are actually questions is a very important question bearing not only on oracle bone studies, but also on research on ancient divination and on ancient Chinese grammar. The herbal formula Bu-Zhong-Yi-Qi-Tang (Hochu-ekki-to, 5 grams per day) was administered to five MRSA-infected bedridden patients with cerebrovascular disorder, dementia and, in two cases, bed sores, who had resistance to several antibacterial drugs. After Hochu-ekki-to the patients showed an excellent result; disappearance of MRSA, improvement of their general condition, and no side effects. Therefore, it is thought that Hochu-ekki-to may be a useful drug for MRSA-infected patients.
