Xiao Ganyuan was a well-known industrialist and poet in Qishan area. Because of his passion for classical poetry, he founded a poetry society and seek his own poetic achievement under Japanese official permit. Politically, he stayed cautious during foreign government while protecting his hometown. The Qifeng Poetry Society he founded was the local representative of classical literature in the Qishan and Meinong (Qimei) area since the Japanese colonial period; it aimed to preserve classical poetry and study poetic skills by mutual discussion. It was a literary club with a social function and served as an importance organization to promote Sinology in the Qimei area. After the Taiwan’s retrocession, due to the changing times, Japanese official attitudes, the closed-up structure of clan-like organization, and management which could not be modernized, traditional poetry societies have gradually lost the stage. Qifeng Poetry Society has been incorporated into the Kaohsiung Association of Poets due to sharp decline in membership, coupled with a shortage of funding and the difficulty of independent operation. In the future, through the physical and virtual platforms such as internet forums and poetry reading events, it is hoped that the poetry society can actively guide classical poetry to modernization and rise to the test of time with a firm traditional stance. First, from three dimensions—geographical space, Japanese official attitudes and social values, the research explains the founding process and the profile of Qifeng Poetry Society during the Japanese colonial period. It observs the Poetry Society’s echo to the phenomenon of the time, and its assistance to the ethnic integration of Fujian and Hakka people in the Qimei Area. Then the research explores the life of Xiao Ganyuan (1913-1984) and his literary circle of friends, and analyzs the contents and themes of the Chinese Poetry as well as its artistic features, in order to understand the implications of poets. Finally, the works of other poets in the Qifeng Poetry Society and the post-war development dilemma of classical poetry are illustrated. It is hoped that, with the support from the government and other artistic groups, the Qifeng Poetry Society can be modernized and operate sustainably. Under the title of “A Study of Xiao Qianyuan and Kaohsiung Qifeng Poetry Society", I have collected the data of Qifeng Poetry Society and the works of its poets and reconstructed the profile of Xiao’s literary life to witness the evolution of Taiwan's classical poetry, in the hope of determining the value of Xiao and Qifeng Poetry Society in the history of Taiwan regional literature.
