Abstract:
The Liber theoreumacie is a neglected work of practical geometry, written in Strasbourg in 1214, which sheds valuable light on the study and practice of astronomy in early thirteenth-century Europe. In this article, I focus on the first two chapters of Book IV, which both deal with the construction of horary instruments. The first of these chapters contains the earliest known account of the type of universal horary quadrant known as quadrans vetus, which is here given a biblical pedigree by labelling it the “sundial of Ahaz.” The second chapter describes a graphical method of inscribing hour markings on the surface of an astrolabe’s alidade, which appears to have been introduced into Latin Europe by the twelfth-century translator John of Seville. A critical edition and translation of the relevant passages will conclude the article.

Abstract:
All species of the families Cicadellidae, Eurymelidae and Membracidae described from Australia are listed, together with details of the primary type (type locality, type depository, collection details), known distribution and known hosts. Where appropriate. notes are given on nomenclature, biology and economic significance. Lectotypes are designated for Eurinoscopus sontiates Kirkaldy (Iassinae), Eutettix selbyi Evans (Deltocephalinae) and Empoasca australis Froggatt (Typhlocybinae). Idioscopus niveosparsus (Lethierry) (Idiocerinae) is recorded from Torres Strait islands, the first Australian records of this species. Ipoides brunomaculatus Evans (Eurymelidae : Ipoini) is recorded from Australia for the first time. The following nomenclatural changes are made. Batracomorphus pallas Knight is synonymised with Batracomorphus sontiates (Kirkaldy). Bythoscopus testaceus Walker is synonymised with Krisna kirbyi (Kirkaldy). Limotettix condylus Knight is synonymised with Limotettix pullatus (Evans). Vulturnus vappa Kirkaldy is synonymised with Neovulturnus vaedulcis (Kirkaldy). Nesosteles phryne Kirkaldy is synonymised with Nesoclutha pallida (Evans). The genus Diemoides Evans is reinstated from synonymy with Paralimnus Matsumura. Mitelloides mouldsi Stevens is emended to M . mouldsorum Stevens. Ledropsis froggatti Distant is given priority over L . crocina Distant. Macropsis fuscoguttatus, nom . nov., is proposed for Macropsis fuscopunctatus (Evans 1942). New combinations proposed are Ishidaella quadrata (Walker), Protartessus occidentalis (Jacobi), Stirellus mitis (Kirkaldy), Recilia vetus (Knight), Arawa detracta (Walker), Limotettix pullatus (Evans), Hecalus australis (Evans), Kahaono aneala (Kirkaldy), Zygina evansi (Ross), Zygina honiala (Kirkaldy), Zygina ipoloa (Kirkaldy), Zygina lubra (Kirkaldy), Zygina melanogaster (Kirkaldy) and Zygina sativae (Evans).

Abstract:
The aim of this study was to apply indicators for monitoring the impacts of harvest in a recreational surf clam fishery. We investigated trends in abundance, biomass and size structure and proportion of sexual maturity for the pipi (Donax deltoides) in Venus Bay, Australia. The surf clam stock was sampled during the peak harvesting season in the Australian summer (November to February) at four sites exposed to varying degrees of recreational harvest. Sampling was based on three transects at each site; with 0.027 m3 (0.3 m × 0.3 m × 0.3 m) quadrats stratified within transects by tidal position. Restricted maximum likelihood mixed model analyses were used to examine fixed effect combinations after including a priori random effect for transect within site. Results demonstrated that relative abundance varied significantly (P = 0.0090) among sampling months but not among sites. Relative abundance declined across the peak summer harvest season. The proportion of maturity varied significantly (P = 0.00026) among sites whereas relative biomass varied significantly (P = 0.0043) among months by sites. Relative biomass and the proportion of maturity were considerably higher at the site exposed to minimal harvest compared to other sites. This study demonstrates that a suite of indictors including biomass, size–frequency and proportion of maturity are likely to provide a more accurate assessment of stock status in recreationally fished surf clam populations, than relative abundance. This highlights the need to develop methods to estimate relative biomass in surf clam populations that are not exploited commercially.
