Abstract:

Abstract We examined the reproductive behavior of Mountain Quail (Oreortyx pictus) in two ecologically different regions of Oregon. We used radio-telemetry to locate 57 Mountain Quail nests and determine breeding behavior and incubation patterns. Mountain Quail appeared socially monogamous and displayed few alternative reproductive strategies; only one bird renested and no birds produced consecutive clutches. Twenty-five of 57 nests were incubated exclusively by males, 30 by females, and two by birds of undetermined sex. We observed no nest switching, and males and females had similar clutch and brood sizes. Males brooded chicks, frequently without female assistance. Within six radio-marked pairs, males and females simultaneously incubated separate nests <200 m apart. The average production by females was 22 eggs (range 19–26) with a mean clutch size of 11 eggs (range 7–15). Simultaneous multiple clutches may enhance the reproductive potential of a species when environmental conditions limit double brooding or renesting, and may increase the likelihood that some broods will survive high levels of nest and brood predation. Incubación por Machos y Cuidado Biparental en Oreortyx pictus Resumen. Examinamos el comportamiento reproductivo de Oreortyx pictus en dos regiones ecológicamente diferentes de Oregon. Utilizamos radiotelemetría para localizar 57 nidos de O. pictus y para determinar el comportamiento reproductivo y los patrones de incubación. O. pictus resultó ser socialmente monógamo y mostró unas pocas estrategias de reproducción alternativas; sólo un ave volvió a nidificar y ningún ave produjo nidadas consecutivas. Veinticinco de 57 nidos fueron incubados exclusivamente por machos, 30 por hembras y dos por aves de sexo indeterminado. No observamos intercambio entre nidos y tanto hembras como machos tuvieron nidadas y crías de tamaños similares. Frecuentemente los machos criaron a los polluelos sin la asistencia de las hembras. Considerando seis parejas marcadas con transmisores, hembras y machos incubaron simultáneamente nidos separados por <200 m. La producción promedio por hembra fue de 22 huevos (rango entre 19–26), con un tamaño promedio de nidada de 11 huevos (rango entre 7–15). Las nidadas múltiples simultáneas pueden aumentar el potencial reproductivo de una especie cuando las condiciones ambientales limitan la doble cría o la re-nidificación y aumentar la probabilidad de que algunas crias sobrevivan, dados los altos niveles de depredación de nidos y crías.

Abstract:

Purpose. To identify environmental barriers and facilitators of children's physical activity and healthy eating in a rural county. Design. Community-based participatory research using mixed methods, primarily qualitative. Setting. A rural Oregon county. Subjects. Ninety-five adults, 6 high school students, and 41 fifth-grade students. Measures. In-depth interviews, focus groups, Photovoice, and structured observations using the Physical Activity Resource Assessment, System for Observing Play and Leisure Activity, Community Food Security Assessment Toolkit, and School Food and Beverage Marketing Assessment Tool. Analysis. Qualitative data were coded by investigators; observational data were analyzed using descriptive statistics. The findings were triangulated to produce a composite of environmental barriers and assets. Results. Limited recreational resources, street-related hazards, fear of strangers, inadequate physical education, and denial of recess hindered physical activity, whereas popularity of youth sports and proximity to natural areas promoted physical activity. Limited availability and high cost of healthy food, busy lifestyles, convenience stores near schools, few healthy meal choices at school, children's being permitted to bring snacks to school, candy used as incentives, and teachers' modeling unhealthy eating habits hindered healthy eating, whereas the agricultural setting and popularity of gardening promoted healthy eating. Conclusions. This study provides data on a neglected area of research, namely environmental determinants of rural childhood obesity, and points to the need for multifaceted and multilevel environmental change interventions.

Abstract:

The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of added to mixture essential oil consist of mint oil, juniper oil, rosemary oil and oregano vulgare oil added in drinking water at on intestinal health in quail breeders. A total of 160 Japanese quail breeders (control group each subgroup 6 females 6 males, experimental groups each subgroup 5 females 5 males) 17 weeks of age were randomly divided into 3 treatment groups and each group was divided into 5 replicates. The experimental period lasted 56 days. Maize and soybean meal-based diets were offered ad libitium to the birds from during the experimental period. Treatments were as follows: C, (Control; without supplementation to the drinking water); E1 (0,1ml/L essential oil mixture supplementation to the drinking water) and E2 (0,3ml/L essential oil mixture supplementation to the drinking water. Acetic acid, butyric acid, isocaproic acid and SCFA values were linearly affected by the increasing level of essential oil mixture (mint oil, juniper oil, rosemary oil and oregano vulgare oil). There were no significant differences in propionic acid, isobutyric acid, valeric acid, isovaleric acid, caproic acid and BCFA concentrations. In conclusion, essential oil mixture consists of mint oil, juniper oil, rosemary oil and oregano vulgare oil can be used to improve intestinal health in quail breeders drinking water.

Abstract:

Abstract. The aim of this study was to evaluate the time to sexual maturity and quality of initial eggs of Japanese quail affected by in ovo injection of plant extracts: ginger (GR), garlic (GC), oregano (O) and cinnamon (C). In total, 2400 eggs of Japanese quails were divided into six groups on the fifth day of incubation. Group I was the control group (NC), which was not injected. Other eggs were injected with 0.1 mL of liquid: group II – the positive control (PC) – with distilled water, group III with 1 % solution of GR, group IV with GC, group V with O and group VI with C. After hatching, the birds were reared in a cage system and fed with balanced mixtures, and 24 h lighting was used. The time at which birds reached sexual maturity was registered, while in the seventh week of rearing, 120 eggs were subject to quality evaluation. The traits of a whole egg (shape index as the ratio of egg width to egg length, weight, specific gravity), shell (strength, weight, thickness and density), albumen (weight, height), yolk (color, weight, index) were evaluated. At the earliest, on 36th day of life, eggs were laid by birds from the GC group, followed by C (37th day), O and NC (38th day), GR (39th day), and PC (41st day). During the first 2 weeks significantly more eggs were collected from the GC than from the other groups. The heaviest eggs derived from GC and GR groups, whereas the lightest came from the C group. Eggs from the GC group had the best shell strength and the greatest proportion of yolk. The use of medicinal herbs by injection in ovo may considerably modify both time of sexual maturity and quality of the initial eggs of Japanese quail.

Abstract:

Orexin A and B, orexigenic peptides produced primarily by the lateral hypothalamus that signal through two G protein-coupled receptors, orexin receptors 1/2, have been implicated in the regulation of several physiological processes in mammals. In avian (nonmammalian vertebrates) species; however, the physiological roles of orexin are not well defined. Here, we provide novel evidence that not only is orexin and its related receptors 1/2 (ORXR1/2) expressed in chicken muscle tissue and quail muscle (QM7) cell line, orexin appears to be a secretory protein in QM7 cells. In vitro administration of recombinant orexin A and B (rORX-A and B) differentially regulated prepro-orexin expression in a dose-dependent manner with up-regulation for rORX-A ( P < 0.05) and downregulation for rORX-B ( P < 0.05) in QM7 cells. While both peptides upregulated ORXR1 expression, only a high dose of rORX-B decreased the expression of ORXR2 ( P < 0.05). The presence of orexin and its related receptors and the regulation of its own system in avian muscle cells indicate that orexin may have autocrine, paracrine, and/or endocrine roles. rORXs differentially regulated mitochondrial dynamics network. While rORX-A significantly induced the expression of mitochondrial fission-related genes ( DNM1, MTFP1, MTFR1), rORX-B increased the expression of mitofusin 2, OPA1, and OMA1 genes that are involved in mitochondrial fusion. Concomitant with these changes, rORXs differentially regulated the expression of several mitochondrial metabolic genes ( av-UCP, av-ANT, Ski, and NRF-1) and their related transcriptional regulators ( PPARγ, PPARα, PGC-1α, PGC-1β, and FoxO-1) without affecting ATP synthesis. Taken together, our data represent the first evidence of the presence and secretion of orexin system in the muscle of nonmammalian species and its role in mitochondrial fusion and fission, probably through mitochondrial-related genes and their related transcription factors.

Abstract:

One hundred and eighty 7-week-old laying quail were fed various diets over a 12-week period. The diets included a control diet (without essential oil mixture (EOM) or antibiotics (ANTs)), a basal diet including EOM (24 mg/kg feed), and a basal diet including an ANT (avilamycin, 10 mg/kg feed). Each treatment comprised 4 replications with 4 cages (15 quail per cage), amounting to 60 quail per treatment group. Diets (in mash form) and water were provided forad libitumconsumption. EOM consisted of 6 different essential oils derived from the following herbs: oregano (Origanumsp.), laurel leaf (Laurus nobilisL.), sage leaf (Salvia trilobaL.), myrtle leaf (Myrtus communis), fennel seeds (Foeniculum vulgare), and citrus peel (Citrussp.). In comparison with the control diet, adding supplements such as EOM and ANTs to the basal diet increased egg production in quail (P<0.001). However, egg production was similar between EOM and ANT treatment groups. Moreover, there were no differences between the treatment groups with regard to egg weight. Feed intake was not affected by EOM or ANT supplementation, whereas feed conversion ratio was significantly improved by EOM and ANT supplementation. Thus, we concluded that EOM has beneficial effects as a dietary supplement on egg production and feed conversion ratio.

Perante às mais diversas entidades organizadoras do mundo contemporâneo, como os Estados e as grandes corporações, a instrumentalização das redes nos bastidores do crescente fluxo tecnológico se dá como chave para o domínio e controle de incontáveis aspectos sociais, culturais, econômicos e políticos na atualidade. O ciberespaço, enquanto produto e (re)produtor do espaço geográfico se caracteriza como um instrumento, por excelência, do poder. Mas para quais fins ele é utilizado? E quais são seus efeitos, no que diz respeito à transformação do espaço geográfico? Este artigo visou destacar o ciberespaço enquanto produto imaterial das condições materiais da realidade, capaz de reconfigurar a própria materialidade que o gerou, sob interesses específicos. Para a compreensão deste processo, em um primeiro momento objetivou-se abordar o contexto e o processo espaço-temporal da produção do ciberespaço por meio da origem e do desenvolvimento dele ao longo das últimas décadas. Em sequência, o ciberespaço foi analisado como um produto socioespacial, mas também como um (re)produtor de transformações, dinâmicas e ressignificações no/do espaço geográfico. Por fim, a discussão foi direcionada ao objetivo – urgente – de debater a vulnerabilidade social no espaço (i)material pelo processo de individualização, despersonalização e fragmentação dos indivíduos, potencializado cada vez mais pelas Tecnologias da Informação e Comunicação (TICs).

Abstract:

O presente artigo trata se de um estudo descritivo, do tipo revisão integrativa de literatura, de caráter qualitativo. Das publicações encontradas, foram analisados casos em que houve o autocuidado e em que o paciente recebeu assistência. Nas situações em que o paciente não foi acompanhado e promoveu o autocuidado notou-se maior taxa de ansiedade, a qual sofreu significativa redução com o acompanhamento, promovendo maior bem estar dos usuários. (Krouse, 2016). No autocuidado, é possível observar que há fatores externos que influenciam na qualidade de vida, ou seja, existem fatores que facilitam ou dificultam essa condição. Um estudo no norte da Califórnia, Oregon e Washington, realizado por Bulkley, J. E, et al, que enviou uma pesquisa a 177 pacientes, com 5 anos ou mais de ostomia. Desses, 66% responderam, dos quais, 63% relataram pelo menos uma dificuldade em promover o autocuidado.Os problemas mais relatados foram, a frequência de troca da bolsa, vazamentos e complicações dérmicas locais. Dessa forma, a promoção do autocuidado soma pontos para a perfeita recuperação e acompanhamento de quem está no cenário de ostomia.Vale ressaltar que ser ostomizado implica em mudanças no hábito de vida. Seja na atuação de uma equipe multidisciplinar ou na capacitação do grupo familiar, no atual estudo observou-se a necessidade de atualização e processo de busca por uma melhor adaptação para a vida do paciente.

Abstract:

Abelhas indígenas são importantes polinizadores de plantas nativas. Na Caatinga existem cerca de 193 espécies de abelhas pertencentes a 79 gêneros, dos quais 18 são meliponínios. Objetivou-se neste trabalho verificar se existe influência dos pontos cardeais e colaterais na nidificação de abelhas Melipona subnitida Ducke e Frieseomelitta sp. em hospedeiros vegetais da Caatinga. O trabalho foi desenvolvido em Santana do Seridó, estado do Rio Grande do Norte, na Fazenda Morada da Jandaíra (6° 44´ 16´´S e 36° 43´ 13´´W). As medidas de largura e altura dos ninhos foram feitas com o auxílio de uma fita métrica. Utilizou-se um aplicativo de bússola digital para smartphone (iPhone® Model A 1533) para a leitura do posicionamento dos orifícios de nidificação em relação aos pontos cardeais e colaterais. A velocidade do vento, umidade e temperatura foi realizada por uma mini-estação meteorológica Oregon Scientific®, WMR928NX. As análises de frequência absoluta foram feitas no software R v. 2.15 (R Development Core Team, 2005). Foram analisados um total de 136 ninhos de abelhas. Observou-se que as abelhas M. subnitida Ducke e Frieseomelitta sp. nidificam com maior frequência em Commiphora leptophloeos e Poincianella pyramidalis. Quanto a orientação magnética de nidificação, essas abelhas possuem hábitos distintos: a abelha M. subnitida Ducke demonstra maior preferência de nidificação na direção Noroeste (NW), enquanto que a abelha Frieseomelitta sp. possui uma preferência de nidificação abrangente, em qualquer orientação magnética, exceto entre os ângulos 270 e 315º.

Abstract:

The RFamide-related peptides (RFRPs) are the group of neuropeptides synthesized predominantly from the hypothalamus that negatively affects the hypothalamo-hypophyseal-gonadal (hypothalamic–pituitary–gonadal [HPG]) axis. These peptides are first identified in quail brains and emerged as the mammalian orthologs of avian gonadotropin inhibitory hormones. The RFRP-3 neurons in the hypothalamus are present in several mammalian species. The action of RFRP-3 is mediated through a G-protein-coupled receptor called OT7T022. The predominant role of RFRP-3 is the inhibition of HPG axis with several other effects such as the regulation of metabolic activity, stress regulation, controlling of non-sexual motivated behavior, and sexual photoperiodicity in concert with other neuropeptides such as kisspeptin, neuropeptide-Y (NPY), pro-opiomelanocortin, orexin, and melanin. RFamide peptides synthesized in the granulosa cells, interstitial cells, and seminiferous tubule regulate steroidogenesis and gametogenesis in the gonads. The present review is intended to provide the recent findings that explore the role of RFRP-3 in regulating HPG axis and its potential applications in the synchronization of reproduction and its therapeutic interventions to prevent stress-induced amenorrhea.
