Abstract:
Abstract Women occupied a central place in seventeenth- and eighteenth-century transatlantic Quakerism. They acted as prophets, missionaries, authors and spiritual leaders of their communities. Recent scholarship has offered important insights into the unparalleled public roles available to women within the early Quaker community. But little is known about the networks of hospitality that developed across the British Atlantic that made itinerant missionary service possible. The generosity of countless female Quakers to unknown “Friends” remains an underexplored aspect of early Quaker history. Using printed spiritual testimonies and correspondence exchanged between Quaker missionaries and their female hosts, this article shows how ministers were “sustained” during their travels. Active religious service did not have to equate to ministerial work, and networks of female hospitality provided an important accompaniment to the national and transatlantic Quaker mission.

Abstract:
The authors focus on the case of the “Trident Three”, who boarded a Trident submarine control station on barge on a Scottish loch and, using their bare hands and small hammers, disabled much of the computer equipment in the station, temporarily disarming one third of Britain’s nuclear weapons system. Drawing primarily on a discourse analysis of the case, the authors identify a profound disjuncture between the ways in which the law and religious discourse framed the actions of the Trident Three. They explore the ways in which religious claims are reshaped by legal discourse as isolated actions rather than as actions set in a broader moral context with transcendental implications. Their project is to conduct a socio-legal analysis of competing discourses, paying particular attention to the ways in which power relations are worked out. They also acknowledge the contribution of social movements literature to an understanding of the ways in which groups deploy notions of “the good society” or “the public good” in order to ground their justification of choice of action.

Abstract:
In this essay, the authors use an archival collection housed at the University of California, Santa Barbara, Library Special Research Collections to examine how the concept of “the book” changes in light of historical archival practices and present-day techniques of digitization and computational literary analysis. The Ballitore Collection consists of roughly 2,500 letters, journals, and notes related to the eighteenth- and nineteenth-century Irish Quaker community of Ballitore, Ireland. Researchers on the Ballitore Project have applied the computational methods of network analysis and topic modeling to the collection while considering how its history of collection and curation affect our interpretation of the materials. Just as the documents in the Ballitore Collection have been created, collected, edited, disassembled, reassembled, and curated by networks of writers, readers, and librarians over time, so the Ballitore Project has been run by a diverse, collaborative, nonhierarchical research team dedicated to showing how our contemporary concepts of digitization and media transformation can elucidate the nonlinear relationship between print and manuscript in earlier periods.

Abstract:
The article is devoted to the participation of foreign public organizations in helping the starving during the famine of 1921–1922 in Kazakhstan. The authors of the article study the contribution of foreign public organizations, such as the American Relief Administration, the Society of Quaker Friends, the Catholic Mission, the Workers International Relief, the Red Cross Society, and others, to helping the starving population of Kazakhstan. As a result, they note that the assistance of foreign organizations consisted of the implementation of food and medical assistance, cooperation with orphanages and medical institutions, and catering. Also, it is identified that humanitarian organizations worked based on special agreements, which prescribed the conditions for ensuring their right to free use of railways, motor, and horse-drawn transport, premises and warehouses, telegraph and telephone communications. The areas of their activity are designated; the features and main results of the work are studied. The authors conclude that foreign humanitarian organizations had made a great contribution to the cause of helping the starving, as a result of which, through joint efforts, it was possible to eliminate the consequences of hunger and save thousands of people from death

Abstract:
In the last two decades, some authors in the philosophy for children movement have theorized that the community of philosophical inquiry can be a form of spiritual practice, of the care of the self, or a wisdom practice (De Marzio, 2009; Gregory, 2009, 2013, 2014;Gregory & Laverty, 2009). Yet, it is unclear if philosophy for children is, by itself, a form of spiritual education, or if it requires some sorts of modification to be one. And, if it is or can be a form of spiritual education, we can interrogate in what ways and to what extent is it one. It is these questions that this text aims to explore. To do so, we will first clarify the meaning of spiritual education through the presentation of two authors who have explicitly written on that topic. The first is Parker J. Palmer, who has developed a perspective on what it means to reclaim the spiritual roots of education, derived from his study and practice of Quaker spirituality. The second is Pierre Hadot, who has explored how the practice of philosophy in Western antiquity was a form of spiritual exercise. From our presentation of these two authors will emerge a particular perspective of what spiritual education means. In the last section of the text we will use this presentation to examine in what ways philosophy for children can be a form of spiritual education and if requires adaptations to be one.

A package of play texts arrives, always an intriguing prospect. First impressions. The publishers: one from Talon, old friends; one from Blizzard, who must now rank as middle-size; and two publishers I haven’t heard of. The authors: I have a nodding acquaintance with Rod Langley (that is, we attended the same party); I have read Carley’s Midnight Madness; I have scarcely heard of the other two. Performance: none are mainstage. Green’s texts come from One Yellow Rabbit in Calgary; those from Carley and Kaufman are associated with Dark Horse, one of Vancouver’s shadowier alternatives; The Dunsmuirs comes from Nanaimo Festival on Vancouver Island. Finally, perhaps most crucially: Langley’s is in a familiar linear, episodic convention; Carley presents odd people in an odd world; Green and Kaufman write in a manner I don’t immediately understand, at least on the page.

Abstract:
Juvenile literature of “domestic abolitionism” seems to be one of the most interesting, yet under-researched branches of American abolitionist literature. Domestic abolitionist authors were usually women, who often published their texts anonymously or assuming pseudonyms. Diverse as they are in terms of genre, these texts share a set of common features. Among these features, according to Deborah De Rosa, is employment of three overarching images: the abolitionist mother-historian, the slave child, the white child. The mother-historian tells stories to foster “a change of hearts” of her young listeners, to inspire their empathy for their enslaved peers, and to engage them in the abolitionist cause. This paper focuses on semi-anonymous Sister Ruth’s Stories, or, Evenings with John Woolman (1865) — a domestic abolitionist text, which seems to have been overlooked in literary studies so far. Sister Ruth’s Stories are constructed as a sequence of evening conversations between Sister Ruth (“Motherhistorian”) and her younger siblings. The topic of these conversations is life of John Woolman (1720 –1772), a famous Quaker minister and proto-abolitionist. Sister Ruth retells children the plot of Woolman’s Journal, describing his personal campaign against slavery. She comments upon this autobiographical text, embellishing it with some additional sentimental scenes, biblical and poetical allusions. In Sister Ruth’s Stories, didacticism of domestic abolitionist literature seems to be counterbalanced by the multi-voice chorus of Ruth’s listeners, with their unfeigned reactions to the stories. As for revision of national history, which is also a substantial part of domestic abolitionist literature, it plays a pivotal role in the book, and yet appears moderate. Published in the last year of the Civil War, Sister Ruth’s Stories seem to embrace both abolitionist and pacifist messages of John Woolman’s Journal.

Abstract:
Abstract Objectives Preliminary evidence, primarily animal and in vitro studies, suggests that oats selectively impact the microbiota. We conducted an in vitro screening trial, using the M-SHIME model®, with fecal inoculum from healthy adult donors with elevated cholesterol levels to determine the effect of 1 serving (40g) of Quaker Old-Fashioned Oats (OFO) containing 1.4g β-Glucan (βG). We also conducted a clinical trial to confirm the in vitro effect of OFO in vivo using fecal material obtained from a similar subject population. Methods In Vitro Trial- Validated M-SHIME model of the entire GI system was used with mucosal beads. Fecal inoculum was donated from 3 healthy adults with elevated cholesterol levels (total cholesterol >5.5 to < 7mmol/L and LDL cholesterol >3.4 to ≤ 4.9mmol/L). Treatment was 40g OFO, containing 1.4g βG. Study design included 2 week (wk) stabilization, 2 wk control, and 3 wk intervention periods. Clinical Trial- Randomized, single-blind, placebo-controlled, cross-over study with 38 healthy adults with elevated cholesterol levels within same ranges used in vitro. Treatment was 40g OFO (1.4g βG). Control was 40g Cream of Rice, containing no βG. Study design included 2 wk run-in, 6 wk intervention, and 4 wk wash out periods. Changes in select fecal groups were quantified using qPCR. Results OFO statistically increased lactobacillus in vitro in all colon regions and in vivo compared to control. OFO statistically increased bifidobacterium in vitro in all colon regions compared to control. Increase in bifidobacterium in vivo was observed but did not reach significance. No significant changes in either studies for other bacteria's quantified: Akkermansia Muciniphila, Enterobacteriaceae, Roseburia, Faecalibacterium Prausnitzii, Clostridium Perfringens, and Eubacterium Hallii. Conclusions 1 serving of OFO significantly increased lactobacillus levels in vitro and was replicated in vivo. This is notable because previous in vivo research suggests lactobacillus strains may play a significant role in cholesterol metabolism, and therefore this effect warrants further study in humans. Abstract:
AbstractThis article examines a wave of Chinese poetry sparked by the 2008 Sichuan earthquake. “Quake Poetry” was published online before being re-circulated through digital, print and live media. Multimedia adaptations of one poem are examined to investigate the relationship between the authors of Quake Poetry, the different media platforms, and the people and institutions involved in its proliferation. Media convergence enabled Quake Poetry to fulfil several functions in the aftermath of the earthquake. Most prominently, it served as an emotional outlet for those affected by the quake, while giving its netizen-producers a sense of creative agency as they engaged in participatory cultural production. Members of the contemporary poetry scene cited Quake Poetry as evidence of poetry's ongoing hold over the Chinese national consciousness. Finally, certain poems were appropriated and promoted by China's state-controlled media to propagate a politically expedient image of Chinese unity in the face of tragedy.

Abstract:
A large number of engineered buildings were severely damaged and collapsed during the Richter magnitude 6.8 earth quake that struck Erzincan, Turkey, on March 13, 1992. The building inventory of the city contained structures similar to those built worldwide at the time of their construction. The study of the effects of this earthquake on structures is of particular significance to Canada, since an earthquake of approximately the same magnitude is likely to occur in many parts of the country, where similar structural systems are used. This paper reports on the findings of a 4-day reconnaissance visit conducted by the authors. A brief description of seismological aspects of the earthquake is presented, including characteristics of the ground motion. The emphasis is placed on structural performance during the earth quake, and possible causes of observed structural failures and collapses. Key words: building code, concrete, earthquake, Erzincan, masonry, precast concrete, reinforced concrete, seismic design, structures, structural design, steel, unreinforced masonry.

Abstract:
Abstract. Analysis of the 2007 M5.4 Alum Rock earthquake near San José California showed that magnetic pulsations were present in large numbers and with significant amplitudes during the 2 week period leading up the event. These pulsations were 1–30 s in duration, had unusual polarities (many with only positive or only negative polarities versus both polarities), and were different than other pulsations observed over 2 years of data in that the pulse sequence was sustained over a 2 week period prior to the quake, and then disappeared shortly after the quake. A search for the underlying physics process that might explain these pulses was was undertaken, and one theory (Freund, 2002) demonstrated that charge carriers were released when various types of rocks were stressed in a laboratory environment. It was also significant that the observed charge carrier generation was transient, and resulted in pulsating current patterns. In an attempt to determine if this phenomenon occurred outside of the laboratory environment, the authors scaled up the physics experiment from a relatively small rock sample in a dry laboratory setting, to a large 7 metric tonne boulder comprised of Yosemite granite. This boulder was located in a natural, humid (above ground) setting at Bass Lake, Ca. The boulder was instrumented with two Zonge Engineering, Model ANT4 induction type magnetometers, two Trifield Air Ion Counters, a surface charge detector, a geophone, a Bruker Model EM27 Fourier Transform Infra Red (FTIR) spectrometer with Sterling cycle cooler, and various temperature sensors. The boulder was stressed over about 8 h using expanding concrete (Bustartm), until it fractured into three major pieces. The recorded data showed surface charge build up, magnetic pulsations, impulsive air conductivity changes, and acoustical cues starting about 5 h before the boulder actually broke. These magnetic and air conductivity pulse signatures resembled both the laboratory rock stressing results and the 30 October 2007 M5.4 Alum Rock earthquake field data. The second part of this paper examined other California earthquakes, prior to the Alum Rock earthquake, to see if magnetic pulsations were also present prior to those events. A search for field examples of medium earthquakes was performed to identify earthquakes where functioning magnetometers were present within 20 km, the expected detection range of the magnetometers. Two earthquakes identified in the search included the 12 August 1998 M5.1 San Juan Bautista (Hollister Ca.) earthquake and the 28 September 2004 M6.0 Parkfield Ca. earthquake. Both of these data sets were recorded using EMI Corp. Model BF4 induction magnetometers, installed in equipment owned and operated by UC Berkeley. Unfortunately, no air conductivity or IR data were available for these earthquake examples. This new analysis of old data used the raw time series data (40 samples per s), and examined the data for short duration pulsations that exceeded the normal background noise levels at each site, similar to the technique used at Alum Rock. Analysis of Hollister magnetometer, positioned 2 km from the epicenter, showed a significant increase in magnetic pulsations above quiescient threshold levels several weeks prior, and especially 2 days prior to the quake. The pattern of positive and negative pulsations observed at Hollister, were similar, but not identical to Alum Rock in that the pattern of pulsations were interspersed with Pc 1 pulsation trains, and did not start 2 weeks prior to the quake, but rather 2 days prior. The Parkfield data (magnetometer positioned 19 km from the epicenter) showed much smaller pre-earthquake pulsations, but the area had significantly higher conductivity (which attenuates the signals). More interesting was the fact that significant pulsations occurred between the aftershock sequences of quakes as the crustal stress patterns were migrating. Comparing laboratory, field experiments with a boulder, and earthquake events, striking similarities were noted in magnetic pulsations and air conductivity changes, as well as IR signals (where instrumented). More earthquake samples, taken with the appropriate detectors and within 10–15 km proximity to large (>M5) earthquakes, are still needed to provide more evidence to understand the variability between earthquakes and various electromagnetic signals detected prior to large earthquakes.

Abstract:
One of the persisting problems in the religious history of sixteenth- and seventeenth-century England has been a question of taxonomy. Authors still puzzle over whether we should have a name for the moderate, conforming section of the Church of England, to distinguish it from those whom we call Puritans. Was there, in fact, an essential difference between those two groups? A second question is, How far to the “left” on the religious “continuum” can we go before Puritanism changes into something qualitatively different? This usually becomes the problem of whether the Quakers were the extreme fringe of Puritanism or something altogether different. This study will offer evidence, statistically expressed, that there were consistent and significant differences between these positions.

Abstract:
The post-disaster emergency rescue and loss evaluation hinges on the timeliness and accuracy of safety assessment of building structures in quake-hit regions. At present, the damage identification of quake-hit buildings in China is mainly conducted based on the experience of the experts. Such an assessment method will inevitably lead to the differences in identification results because each expert has his/her own subjective understanding of the degree of structural damage. In order to solve this problem, the low cyclic loading test of 7 specimens of shear wall is conducted and the hysteretic curves of seven shear walls are drawn. The failure modes and seismic performance of members under different design parameters (axial compression ratio of shear wall, shear span ratio, form of edge member, reinforcement ratio, stirrup ratio of coupling beam, and span height ratio) are compared. By recording the damage images taken at the controlled displacement under each level of load, the corresponding damage indexes are calculated, and the correspondence between the typical component damages and the damage indexes is discovered. After that, the images are compiled into an atlas. The authors calculate the damage index of the overall structure based on the damage indexes of the components and carries out damage identification of RC shear wall structure with the said damage index.

Abstract In the majority of large cities in Poland there is a migration outflow, resulting mainly from suburbanisation processes. However, it should be noted that the inhabitants of large cities do not move exclusively to the suburban zone. The study below focuses on the migratory outflow of Wrocław residents. The authors characterise it by presenting the directions of population movements and determining their sustainability. The authors conclude that the target area of immigrants from Wrocław is mostly a suburban area, but there are also permanent migration flows to other rural communities in the voivodeship and other large cities in the country. The area of emigration itself goes beyond the scope of the voivodeship of which Wrocław is the capital.

Abstract:
Hongkou Town is located north of Dujiangyan City, around 27 km away to the northeast of the epicenter of Wenchuan Earthquake on May 12, 2008. The middle segment of the central fault, that is the Yingxiu-Beichuan Fault of the Longmenshan Fault belt, passes through the town, along which almost every form of surface ruptures is developed. The quake also resulted in 73 of the town's residents dead or missing and 95% of its buildings or infrastructures damaged, including the collapse of Gaoyuan Bridge. Its estimated intensity was around XI. On the other hand, in Shenxigou Village and Gaoyuan Village, many houses successfully withstood the quake. In this paper, the authors examine why the latter houses withstood the earthquake well. Based on field investigation and local geology, especially fault configuration in the area, a detailed description is given on the characteristics of surface rupture and structural damage in the two villages and an attempt is made to correlate fault movement with structural damage. The results show that: (1) Fault movement or surface rupture may be affected by local geological configuration and topography. Compression can lead to local strike-slip movement. (2) Structural damage is associated with fault movement. Strike-slip movement causes less damage to structures, while in the adjacent area of fault with thrust movement, the structures in the hanging-wall can be more easily damaged than the ones on the footwall, i.e. hanging-wall effects. An area located on the footwalls of two nearly parallel faults may result in a "safer island," where structural damage is much lighter that those outside the island. (3) Apart from shaking effect, site effects should also be considered in structural design.

Abstract:
Off-road vehicles (ORVs) have recently become a serious problem not only for natural peripheral areas, but also for those rare green enclaves in heavily urbanised regions. The consequences of motor traffic in naturally valuable areas, including forests, affect the environment together with all its users to different extent. The scale and ubiquity of this type of motor tourism in Poland convinced the authors to research the subject and assess its influence on the forest environment, on the example of the mountains surrounding the region called Worek Okrzeszyna on the Polish-Czech borderland. The authors aimed to determine the scale and character of the phenomenon in forests and environmentally valuable areas in Poland, as well as to assess its scope in the examined research area together with the environmental and social effects. A field inventory of all the trails used by motor tourists was carried out, with particular emphasis on the extent of the network and their environmental consequences. In the ranges surrounding Worek Okrzeszyna from the south, a significant negative impact of illegal motor tourism on the vegetation, soil and relief have been revealed. It occurs wherever the phenomenon takes place: on forest roads, tourist trails and beyond them. Although the main research subject is the pressure of motor tourism on the environment, the authors also raise questions regarding social consequences of the phenomenon (noise, worse aesthetic experience), followed by the limits of tourism as such.

Abstract Within the realm of contemporary urban design theory and practice, a number of authors have conceptualised the trends and processes of city development and planning into a series of urbanisms. This discussion essay examines the overall tenets of the ‘ReUrbanism paradigm’, a paradigm that has long been present in city planning and development but has received limited analysis and criticism and has not gained a more integrated position within the professional and academic worlds. This paper continues a paradigm development outline, leaning on the characteristics of other urbanisms in order to develop and provide a frame of reference and to contribute to the ongoing build-up of taxonomies about the trajectory of contemporary urban design thought. Focusing on the American representative case of Detroit, the authors of this paper argue for a better understanding of this urban regeneration paradigm, which they characterise as a rational urban planning & design approach in the contemporary age of inner city renewal.

Abstract:
The objective of the study is to identify those skills that are actually needed by the labour market and allow university graduates to achieve the highest remuneration. To achieve this objective, the authors monitored, for 18 months, online job postings from six countries addressed to geography graduates. Online job postings are the most up-to-date and reliable source of data about the salaries that employers are willing to offer for specific skills or skillsets. A total of 17,397 advertisements were collected, out of which 7,407 included information about the offered salary. Applying text mining and regression tree (classification and regression tree [CART]) analyses, the authors identified skills that significantly differentiate annual salaries. The group of competences associated with higher earnings includes highly specialised geographic information system (GIS), statistical and geological skills. Lower salaries were linked to some general skills such as communicating in a native language as well as some specialised skills, but only to those related to teaching and conducting scientific research.

We have been studying some seismicity characteristics connected with Simeonof earthquake of July 22, 2020 (Mw 7.8) in the area of Shumagin seismic gap, located in the region of South Alaska. 8 years before this event, the authors picked up here ring-shaped seismicity structure. Using characteristics of this structure we made a conclusion on preparation for large earth-quake (Mw~8), similarly to many events in subduction zones. We used data on threshold magnitude and size of the ring structure, and earlier obtained dependences of these parame-ters on magnitudes of main events for the subduction zones in the Eastern Pacific. Accumula-tion of new seismicity data prior to 2020/07/22 allowed us to specify the source location and magnitude of the Simeonof earthquake: Mw=7.9±0.3. It was shown that after this event new ring structures continued to form, which can correspond to preparation for larger earthquake: Mw=8.2±0.2. Geodynamical processes, which lead to formation of the ring structures, are discussing.

Abstract:
Abstract Increasing urbanization results in constant enlarging of the artificial area closed to water infiltration. In 2006–2008, the Soil Sealing Enhancement (SSE) database was the part of the GMES Fast Track Service on Land Monitoring. The accuracy of the final product set by the authors should reach at least 85%. Orthorectified high resolution aerial photos of Poland were used to develop reference data constituting 20,000 random samples around the country. In each sample, the points were classified into three possible surface classes: natural, artificial and semi-sealed. Comparison of reference data to original project statistics revealed the values of accuracy, commission and omission errors in the SSE dataset. Although, SSE accuracy in Poland fulfils the criteria set by SSE authors with overall accuracy of 99.5%, the individual analysis for each category reveals many weaknesses. Preliminary interpretation of mistakes leads to the conclusion that the spatial resolution of pictures used in the SSE project is insufficient. In several cases, validation proved that omission errors were made in relation to construction sites or recently constructed buildings. It should be stated that the accuracy of SSE product for Poland should be treated as the maximum value of impervious surfaces.

Published in 1923, the Borgyogyaszati, Urologiai és Venerologiai Szemle (BUVSZ) – now known without the word „Urologiai” (BVSZ) – is a significant milestone in the history of the Hungarian medical journals. In the context of the 100th anniversary of the journal, the authors examine the historicity of the formal transformation of the BVSZ and make only the most necessary reference to changes in its content. In doing so, they depart from the usual analytical approach of similar writings, but carefully show how the Review has adapted to the ceaseless challenges of scholarly communication. They show the sacrificial work of the editorial staff in bringing the journal into the 21st century, how the renewed quality of print publishing has taken its place in the digital world. After a historical overview, the authors have examined the data on the BVSZ that can be extracted from the internationally accepted bibliographic databases. In presenting the current position of the paper, the aim was to be factual and not to analyse the reasons for the current outcome. Emphasis has been placed on open access data sources that are widely monitored and have a sufficiently scientific information set and reliable search algorithms. The authors believe that their paper is intended to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Journal, but also to point the way towards its inclusion in international databases by demonstrating the benefits of the Open Journal System (OJS), which is important for the future development of the content of the BVSZ

Abstract:
The Great East Japan Earthquake on March 11, 2011 is said to be a once-in-1000-year catastrophic quake. The Tsunami triggered by the earthquake destroyed broad coastal areas in northeast Japan. As recovery from the earthquake proceeds, the demand for new road construction, housing hill development, and residential construction is rapidly increasing. Culture plays a critical role in the district’s recovery. For that reason, before development, cultural properties in the corresponding districts must be urgently investigated. This is a must, although balancing cultural recovery with rapid economic recovery is no easy task. With this in mind, we have developed a new system focusing on speedy archaeological investigation and adequate documentation. The authors reexamined the existing investigation process to categorize tasks into two types: those that must be done only at archaeological sites (site A) and ones available at other places (site B). We then formulated a scheme where the tasks on both sites are performed simultaneously in parallel over the network. Experiments are ongoing. This presentation reports the process and issues of our research and development.

Abstract Contemporary rural landscapes in Poland are being changed intensively and adversely. These changes lead to landscape disharmony, spatial disorder, the blurring of individual and specific features and disruption to the ecological equilibrium. This article aims to present general rules for the optimization of rural landscapes. It discusses the causes and consequences of unfavourable changes within Poland’s rural landscapes which constitute a threat to their sustainable development. The authors attempt to identify the major factors to be considered in taking steps aimed at landscape optimization. Landscape equilibrium may be assessed through the sustainable development dimensions: ethical, ecological, social, economic, technical, political and legal. Landscape optimization consists in maintaining the balance within these dimensions.

Patients suffering from chronic diseases like epilepsy often use complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) as first-line treatment because of myths, superstitions, and stigma attached to the disease. The present study reports on 108 patients with epilepsy presenting to an allopathic hospital with uncontrolled seizures, status epilepticus, or drug toxicity. Blood samples of these patients taking unlabeled pills from a CAM provider specializing in the treatment of epilepsy contained prescription antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) such as carbamazepine, phenytoin, valproic acid, and phenobarbitone. Serum samples in all but 5 patients demonstrated presence of one or more AEDs. Most of the patients had serum levels of these AEDs either in the subtherapeutic or in the supratherapeutic range. The authors alert clinicians that the patients resorting to “safe” or “natural” CAM may end up receiving modern prescription medicines from unauthorized CAM providers in toxic or subtherapeutic doses.

Abstract:
<p>This paper will look at an apparent tension between master plans that envision cities as finished objects and temporary projects that form in response to more immediate issues and concerns. In the five years since the large earthquake that struck Christchurch on February 22, 2011, a huge array of interventions, planning decisions, and design proposals have been made -affecting the lives of thousands of people and costing many billions of dollars. These actions are almost always separated into temporal categories of the short-term and the long-term; temporary and the permanent. In this categorisation there is a strange paradox in which the more concrete short-term actions are characterised as ephemeral and the paper ideas of the long-term more real. <br />The relationship between two forms is complex. Temporary and permanent forms of city-making can be complementary or in conflict - and sometimes both at the same time. Temporary projects can act as stepping-stones to a “finished” city, they can subvert and undermine the long-term plans, and they can support some aspects while undermining others.<br />The creation of a master plan in Christchurch – 18 months after the earthquakes – will be compared and contrasted with the making of a large temporary project called the Pallet Pavilion. Notions of <em>public engagement strategies</em>, <em>finishing</em>, and <em>risk management</em> will be articulated and used to illustrate how different the modes of temporary and permanent design operate in relation to the construction of the contemporary city.<br />Concepts from actor network theory will be used to describe the temporary and permanent forms of city-making and different associate types of collaboration. It is argued that the conception and planning of a new city and the design and construction of temporary amenities produce different experiences of time, and different forms of temporality. The authors are PhD candidates researching the role of temporary architecture in contemporary urban settings - this paper reflects on research findings from post-quake Christchurch.</p>

The results of measurements obtained from an automatic weather station located in an open area, near the measurement points on the coastal sand dune, were used as information on the atmospheric conditions predominant in the standard area (flat area covered by grass). The research analysis was performed for the entire measurement period and for days with radiational weather. The authors also determined the dependence between air temperature and humidity values observed over the analysed land form and the values of weather elements measured over the standard area.

Abstract Geomorphosites are among major assets for the development of geotourism. An accurate assessment of spatial distribution of their scientific, educational and economic characteristics provides the basis for appropriate design and management of proposed geoparks. Although the problem of assessing their value for geotourism has been discussed by numerous authors, consistent methodology for the assessment of geomorphosites has not been devised so far. In the present study, we conducted a geotourist evaluation of geomorphosites located within the proposed geopark Vistula River Gap. We assessed a total of 76 sites using 18 assessment criteria. The results indicate not uniform spatial distribution of sites having the highest value. The application of cluster analysis to evaluation results enabled us to distinguish groups of sites with similar characteristics and thus to identify groups of geomorphosites in relation to which various measures should be taken in order to increase the possibilities of their tourist use.

Abstract The Różany Strumień catchment located in the north of Poznań is an example of a small anthropogenically-induced catchment. The main aim of this study is to analyse the variability of selected physical and chemical properties of surface waters in the catchment area in the years 1988-2012. It was found that surface waters in the catchment can be classified as hard and very hard, with slightly basic pH. The deterioration of Różany Strumień water quality concerns chemical oxygen demand, conductivity, chlorides, sodium, ammonia nitrogen and nitrite nitrogen concentrations. The authors of the study have noticed a decrease in the amount of phosphates and sulphates in the water. As observed, the hydrogeochemical type of water changed from calcium-hydrogen carbonate-sulphate into calcium-sodium-hydrogen carbonate-sulphate-chloride. Changes in water chemistry are probably a result of anthropogenic impacts, and they can be associated with the transformation of land use in the catchment area, i.e. the ongoing urbanization of the area.

Abstract:
Abstract For many decades most researchers, planners and local authorities have been focusing almost exclusively on urban growth and its socio-economic and spatial consequences. However, in the current debate concerning the future of cities and regions in Europe the process of their shrinkage starts to attract more attention. In the conditions of a declining population, urban governance is an important challenge for local authorities, being usually much more difficult than during the periods of population growth. The experience of cities affected by shrinkage shows that there is no simple method of counteracting negative consequences of this process. Regeneration strategies vary a lot, depending mostly on the way the problem is perceived by both central and local governments. The strategies can either choose an adaptive approach (the acceptance of shrinkage and adjustment to it), or attempt to renew growth (shrinkage is treated as just a temporary phenomenon). Quite often the problem is ignored and no action is taken at all. In the paper the authors discuss the conditions and consequences of different approaches towards the process of shrinkage and present examples of regeneration strategies (together with their assessment). They conclude with recommendations for future urban policies.

Abstract:
Abstract Manorial and grange complexes are characteristic elements of the rural cultural landscape; they constitute significant evidence of the farming tradition of a region. Unfortunately, nowadays these complexes have often become dilapidated, their legibility has been obliterated and there have been radical changes in the spatial context. The aim of this study was to determine whether manorial and grange complexes were given proper attention in the development and strategic plans worked out by communes. The commune of Tarnowo Podgórne, stretching along the western boundary of Poznań city, was selected as a case study and research area. An attempt is also made to recognise what protective provisions the local law makes for those complexes. The authors think that the quality of plans concerning the facilities under study is unsatisfactory. The Land Use Plan includes recommendations to protect nonexistent facilities and lists a complex located beyond the commune boundaries. Although the Plan emphasises the significance of manorial and grange complexes, there are no local spatial development plans for most of them. Some plans referring to the spatial structures under analysis are imprecise and incomplete, which results in ineffective protection.

Abstract:
Abstract This review essay discusses four books published in Dutch by three Muslims and an ‘ex-Muslim’ in 2014 and 2015 that present different approaches to how to live as a (‘good’) Muslim in the West. The former Dutch politician Ayaan Hirsi Ali pleads for far-reaching amendments to Islamic rules concerning belief, ethics and law. Her view differs fundamentally from that of the Muslim theologian Razi Quadir (VU Amsterdam), who positions himself within the Sunni legal tradition. The third author, Muslim theologian and ministry official Mohamed Ajouaou (VU Amsterdam) argues that one should focus primarily on the diversity of Muslim religiosity in the Dutch secular context. Finally, in his autobiographical portrait, Dennis Abdelkarim Honing explains how he discovered legitimate options for living as a pious Muslim in the West. Each in their own way, the authors point to the phenomenon of accusing fellow Muslims being heretical or going astray, and its heavy impact on internal Islamic debate.

Abstract:
Due to the multifaceted nature of the revitalisation process, its evaluation and monitoring, as well as possible comparisons, are complex and difficult to carry out. Evaluation of the revitalisation process currently poses a challenge for all municipalities. The article aims to compare the revitalisation process in the two Polish cities of Toruń and Bydgoszcz. The analysis was based on two financial perspectives: 2007–2015 and 2016–2023. The authors chose a multi-criteria analysis method based on the analytical hierarchical process (AHP) as the main research method. The results show that the Local Revitalisation Programme of the City of Toruń for the years 2007–2015 had the best impact on the revitalisation process. Using the AHP method, we could carry out a multidimensional evaluation of the revitalisation process. Moreover, it allowed us to combine different elements of the evaluation of the revitalisation process and transform them into one synthetic result, ranking each programme in a hierarchy. At the methodological level, the article presents a new approach to conduct research in socio-economic geography, using the tool of multi-criteria analysis derived from the disciplines of economics and management sciences. Until now, the AHP method has not been used in the analysis of the revitalisation process, which confirms the innovative character of the conducted research.

Abstract:
Abstract The approach to the issue of shrinking cities is undergoing constant changes. Originally, this process was referred primarily to the progressing depopulation connected with a deteriorating economic situation. Presently, works on shrinking cities mainly focus on the challenges posed by the problem rather than the delimitation questions. Do the shrinking also apply to the situation of small towns, and if so, to what extent may small towns shrink? Being conscious of the multidimensional nature of the topic discussed, the authors took measures aimed at singling out a group of shrinking towns from the whole set of small towns in Poland. The identification of depopulating centres consisted in pointing to those shrinking both in terms of their demography and economy. This type of research gives rise to all types of methodological problems such as which tools should be used to measure town shrinking or which data should be selected for the research, an issue particularly important for small towns where the range of indicators available is rather limited. What conclusions may be drawn from the conducted analysis? Do small towns in Poland shrink? On the basis of the conducted research the answer is no. With regard to demography, the process of shrinking concerns only 30 towns (4.5%). And this group includes only four which additionally shrink in economic terms.

Abstract:
Tourism appropriates tourist attractions and takes possession of them, marking them both physically and symbolically. Tourists visiting attractions tend to create distinctive marks, usually characterised by some significance in terms of self-identification, on the places and monuments visited by them, and this could be regarded as a symptom of a specific ‘I was here’ syndrome; in the present study, the authors examine the prevailing practices of marking attractions in tourist spaces, as also the marks themselves. We endeavour to identify the nature of the phenomenon and the consequences for both the attractions and the subjects managing them. The survey carried out involved sev- eral chosen sites in Poland, all of which are characterised by a recognised historic status in the realm of public space as well as a clearly identified sociocultural or legal value, which by definition imposes the requirement for adhering to a certain behavioural code when within their precincts and towards them, and excludes other kinds of behaviour. These attractions are all subject to different forms of institutionalised control, which, however, fails when it comes to safeguarding them from the practices of marking undertaken typically by tourists; these occurrences have become a routine phenomenon, which is unsurprising given the fact that the rituals of the contemporary mass and mediatised tourism have made this kind of tourist behaviour common, albeit on a lower scale than previously expected.

Abstract:
Last year, strong public appeal was made to Dutch Muslims to collectively distance themselves from IS and its notion of jihad. In this momentum, four books were published – in Dutch – by three Muslims and an ‘ex-Muslim’. They show different considerations of how to live as (‘good’) Muslim in the West. This review article analyses their positions. In the first book, the former Dutch politician Ayaan Hirsi Ali pleads for far-reaching amendments of Islamic rules concerning belief, ethics and law. Her view essentially differs from Muslim theologian Razi Quadir (VU Amsterdam), who uses Sunni orthodox hermeneutical instruments. The third author, Muslim theologian and ministry official Mohamed Ajouaou (VU Amsterdam) argues that one should primarily look at the diversity of Muslim religiosity in the Dutch secular context. Finally, in his autobiographic portrait, Dennis Abdelkarim Honing explains how he discovered legitimate options to live as pious Muslim in the West.
