In an increasingly globalized world and with rapid advancement in technology, there is a need to think more intentionally about social implications of engineering and technology. These trends make is necessary for the engineering education to incorporate critical consideration of how engineering and technology affect humanity and how to interact effectively in diverse populations. Empathy, an ability that is central to the process of understanding and considering others, has been recognized as a valuable competency in the education of engineers. Studies suggest that service learning is a useful pedagogical approach for supporting students in the development of social competencies like empathy. My aim in this dissertation was to understand engineering students' experiences in a service-learning context to learn the ways in which their descriptions reveal empathy and the elements within their context that shaped empathy development. My participants are fourteen engineering students from two institutions, a small private university and a large public university, with both groups involved in at least one-semester of a service-learning course. Having explored students' experiences, I discuss key findings about how and within which contexts empathy came to play in these experiences. There are many different ways that empathy can play a role within students' experiences in a service-learning context and many facets of an experience help draw out more empathic practices. In this dissertation, I discuss implications of these findings for engineering education and practice.

Full textBackground: Previous recommendations said that new mothers should rest after giving birth. But more recently research has stated that it is important to do exercises for your abs postpartum. Aim: The aim of this study was to examine new mothers views of abtraining postpartum and how these views are turned into actual practice. Method: A qualitative research approach was used and semi-structured interviews was performed with eight new mothers. Data were analyzed by using content analysis. Results: Five main categories were formed. These were views of abtraining, to exercise your abs, assimilating information on exercise, things that facilitates training and not get into the workout. Conclusion: The mothers that expressed that they didn´t know much about exercises did not actually do exercises for their abs. Those who trained used apps or books appropiate for new mothers or went to mother-child classes. The most common source of information was the Internet. However mothers questioned its reliability. Facilitators were the possibility to attend organized training, gyms offering different solutions and the opportunity to childfree time. Barriers were everyday life, lack of childcare, as well as physical problems.

Full textThe purpose of this study is to examine and compare two primary school teachers approach to fictional reading and to show its significance regarding how pupils in middle school can be encouraged to read fictional texts in classroom activities. Therefore semi structured research interviews have been used, according to Bryman (2011) which was used was qualitative research interviews. The results of the research are twofold. One the one hand if the teacher shows the pupils a positive approach to fictional reading the impact on pupils’ love of reading might be positive. If the teacher instead show the pupils a negative approach to fictional reading the effects can be negative. On the other hand, it does not seem important if the teachers’ positive approach to fictional reading is authentic or not, unless the pupils notice that the teachers just pretend having a positive approach and their real thoughts shine through.

Full textAn individual suffering from eating disorders will inevitably affect his or her social context; especially relatives within in the context of the family. The signification of being a relative of a person with mental illness, such as eating disorders, is still a relatively unnoticed topic. The purpose of this study is to describe and illustrate the experiences of being a relative of a family member suffering from eating disorders. Furthermore the aim is to examine how co-dependency can be expressed by the relative. Additionally the specific support needs in terms of being a relative is to be identified. Eight relatives of a family member with an eating disorder were interviewed, each providing us with a different perspective, as they had various positions within their families. Their statements constitute the empirical material of this study. The interviews were qualitative and semi-structured in order to capture the world as it is understood by their individual point of view. The analysis of the empirical material was based on two theories; systemic theory and concepts of co-dependency, as well as relevant previous research. The result highlights that being a relative of a family member with an eating disorder can be very stressful, and involves a great deal of suffering. The eating disorder affects the whole family-system in various ways, and co-dependency manifests in different strategies. Regarding relative support the result shows that various approaches are needed, as all relatives are different and hence have different needs.

Full textThis qualitative study was successful in utilization of grounded theory methodology to ascertain nurses' decision-making processes following their awareness of having made a medical error, as well as how and/or if they corrected and reported the error. Significant literature documents the existence of medical errors; however, this unique study interviewed thirty nurses from adult intensive care units seeking to discover through a detailed interview process their individual stories and experiences, which were then analyzed for common themes. Common themes led to the development of a theoretical model of thought processes regarding error reporting when nurses made an error. Within this theoretical model are multiple processes that outline a shared, time-orientated sequence of events nurses encounter before, during, and after an error. One common theme was the error occurred during a busy day when they had been doing something unfamiliar. Each nurse expressed personal anguish at the realization she had made an error, she sought to understand why the error happened and what corrective action was needed. Whether the error was reported on or told about depended on each unit's expectation and what needed to be done to protect the patient. If there was no perceived patient harm, errors were not reported. Even for reported errors, no one followed-up with the nurses in this study. Nurses were left on their own to reflect on what had happened and to consider what could be done to prevent error recurrence. The overall impact of the process of and the recovery from the error led to learning from the error that persisted throughout her nursing career. Findings from this study illuminate the unique viewpoint of licensed nurses' experiences with errors and have the potential to influence how the prevention of, notification about and resolution of errors are dealt with in the clinical setting. Further research is needed to answer multiple questions that will contribute to nursing knowledge about error reporting activities and the means to continue to improve error-reporting rates.

Full textThe present work has aimed at the comprehension of meanings and conceptions concerning RSI illnesses to INSS/SP medical examiners and RSI patients from CEREST/SP. In order to achieve that, the qualitative methodology was chosen making use of thorough questioning as an instrument of data collection, having distinct scripts to medical examiners and RSI patients. Three medical examiners were interviewed, all male, ranging from 50 to 65 years old, having at least 10 years of experience as professionals in the area. On the other side of the investigation, six patients with RSI from the ambulatory care CEREST/SP were interviewed, 5 female and 1 male, ranging from 35 to 55 years old, all employees to the service sector on leave of absence by the INSS. Thematic content analysis was applied to the collected material, from which three main thematic axes were extracted: the subjects to this study, the work and the doctor-patient relation regarding medical examination. It has been possible to comprehend that the relation doctor-patient established among examiners and patients with RSI is peculiar, since the examination takes place in a doctor\'s office environment permeated by the judgment of the social security law. Within this context, there is a hassle among RSI patients, who take to the moment of their examination their apprehension directed to the assistance and recognition of their condition, and medical examiners, whose expertise is directed to the establishment of the work capability limited by institutional rules, what is a restricting factor in the exercise of their professional autonomy.

Full textKnowledge is the Key
- Internet access, utilization and opinions in Grenada, West Indies
Information and knowledge contributes to growth and development through empowering individuals and communities, creating opportunities to improve their living conditions. Technology is advancing rapidly and the Information and Communication Technology, ICT, provides new ways to attain information. Especially the Internet is regarded to be a source of information and knowledge. However, there are still many places in the world where Internet access is not yet available to everyone. The consequences are that people in developing countries do not get the opportunity to benefit from the new technology and the possibilities it brings.
The research for this thesis was carried out in Grenada during November and December 2006. Grenada is a small independent island in the English speaking Caribbean, where only a small percentage of the population has Internet access. The purpose of the study is to examine if a selection of young individuals in Grenada can obtain enhanced knowledge through using the Internet. Furthermore, the study intends to depict what attitudes and opinions can be found among the youths, focusing on the possibilities as well as the negative effects of the Internet.
This study was conducted trough a qualitative orientated methodological perspective with strategically selected respondents between 11 and 35 years old. Qualitative interviews were being made with nine individuals who were using the Internet regularly.
The conclusion of this thesis is that organized strategies and projects are required, with the aim to create motives for the young generation of Grenada to obtain enhanced knowledge through Internet usage. The access and availability in itself is not enough, because seeking information and knowledge is not the main purpose when the youths are using the Internet. Nevertheless, the respondents stated that the Internet is considered to be a source of information and knowledge and that they know where and how to find information when using the Internet, if they wanted to. The result also reveals an overall positive attitude towards the Internet and the future among the youths, yet still well aware of the negative consequences. The respondents expressed a desire to be able to keep up with the technology and wished for increased and improved accessibility and connectivity in Grenada.
Another interesting conclusion this research generated is the confirmation of the digital divide as a matter of global stratification, rather than differences between countries. Regardless of the country of origin, people with Internet access will have advantages in life and benefit from the technology, unlike those who have no access and hence, will fall even further behind.

Full textBackground: Research and development is conducted in many areas of health care. This means that many patients seeking care and treatment may be asked to participate in research. A person who is ill and in need of care can experience him/herself, in the role of patient, ending up in a position of dependence in relation to health care professionals. The patient is seeking help and health care staff are those who by virtue of knowledge and ability to help patients have a stronger position. Being a patient and participating in research may thus imply receiving increasing attention, but also inferiority or dependency. Aim: The aim was to describe patients’ experiences of participating in research. Method: A literature review was performed based on results from ten qualitative articles, limited to adult patients with experience of participating in research. Results: The results are presented in four categories; exploring the decision to participate in research, Meaningfulness of participating in research, Perception of barriers related to research and from the feeling of support – to the feeling of abandonment. Discussion: The result has been discussed in relation to the life-world perspective according to Dahlberg and Segesten. Three main aspects of the results will be discussed; Barriers for participating in clinical trials versus willingness to participate, dependency on health care professionals – a risk factor both for the patient and the research trial, and the patient’s autonomy and participation in the decision-making about research.

Full textThe school has an important assignment when it comes to additional adaptations. Both Swedish and international research focuses on cooperation among all the schools' professions in the making of various support measures (Scherp & Scherp, 2007; Hernandez, 2013; m.fl.). Teachers in this study emphasize the importance of such cooperation. According to them, this cooperation should not only apply to teachers, but to all staff active within the school organisation. In this study, it is found that the interviewed teachers had a broader idea of the concept of additional adaptations then what is stated in Skolverkets Education's general advice on the subject in question (Skolverket, 2014). This broader view was not only about students with difficulties, but could rather be linked to concepts such as general adaptations, or individual adaptations. They see adaptations in general terms as extremely important for all pupils' opportunities for development and learning. Examples of more general adaptations were adaptations for student interests and adaptations for more study motivated students. In this study, the dual mission of the teaching profession becomes apparent. This dual mission is about getting students to evolve toward the knowledge requirements and a democratically fostering mission. It appears that the teachers experience both of these missions as a driving force in their adaptation work, which becomes particularly clear in the field of social sciences.

Full text"Understanding what I write" is a study of university-scientists’ work concerning science-information, with the basis in Pedagogical Theory. The empirical material is collected through an inquiry and several interviews with scinentists at the ten universities of Sweden. This inquiry was done within the timeframe of November 2000 to Janurary 2001. The purpose is to find out wich methods scientists use to spread their knowledge to the society and what possibilities there are to improve these.
"Jag skriver begripligt "är en studie av universitetsforskares arbete med forskningsinformation med utgångspunkt i pedagogisk teori. Det empiriska materialet är insamlat i form av en enkät och ett flertal intervjuer med forskare på Sveriges tio universitet, under tidsperioden första november 2000 till sista januari 2001. Syftet med undersökningen är att ta reda på vilka metoder forskare använder för att sprida sin kunskap till det omgivande samhället och vilka möjligheter det finns att förbättra dessa.
