Full textFinancial information of sufficient quality to satisfy the needs of the world of finance can only be obtained through a pre-defined international process based on accounting standards. This process needs to take place within States Law and to be subject to the accounting information system implementation control. Although an essential prerequisite, the implementation of accepted international accounting standards is still not enough to ensure reliable financial information. Companies must apply these norms to the highest standards. France is an interesting case as it shows a compromise between adopting international standards whilst retaining its own national financial information process. The use of a dual system is however not desirable in the long run. The search for an alternative which protects each party's interest i. E. The companies and the State is a huge challenge

Full textObjective of this research was to understand the perception of the usefulness ofaccounting information in the perspective of decision making and assessment of creditrisk for companies. Recently, related to some notorious financial scandals, the qualityof accounting information has been seriously questioned. This has challenged us toexamine what is going on in this respect in the Cameroonian context.376In order to do so, we have conceived a model starting from a literature survey andadjusted it on the basis of an exploratory research (16 interviews). Methodologically, the observations from the experiment (134 respondents) are operationalized usingcorrelation and regression analyzes. The results indicate that, in the decision makingprocess, the links between overall quality of accounting information, the use ofaccounting information, the company's size and the perceived usefulness isstatistically significant. However, for the assessment of credit risk, the use of accounting information is notstatistically significant as a variable factor of its perceived usefulness. We observe asresults that, if accounting information is considered useful, it is rather in terms ofdecision making in terms of the evaluation of credit risk. Furthermore, it was foundthat in big corporations business high quality accounting information is perceived asuseful in both dimensions

Full textThe Merger and Acquisition (M&A) operations constitute a key element of market economy and meanwhile form one of the main vectors of the dynamics of the industrial structures. This thesis aims at analyzing the impact of M&A operations on acquiring firm’s accounting information quality. The accounting information quality shall be interpreted first of all, as the quality of earnings. Three main axes are emerged in this problematic and constitute three main chapters of this thesis. By observing all public M&A transactions on the U.S. market from the year 1986 to 2013, these three chapters provide following main contributions. First we find the acquiring firms that involved in the mixed payment acquisition have undergone notable development, have earnings management (EM) behaviors around acquisition years. However, prior study only documented a certain kind of behaviors of the 100% stock exchange acquirers. Plus, we indicate that the EM behavior of acquiring firm is not constraint to the accruals management (AM). We show that they are also likely to use many other ways, either accounting treatment through classification shifting, or real earnings management (REM) methods, for example through the budgetary adjustment of the R&D expenditures. A close link is found between the choice of EM methods and acquisition payment method. Moreover, a substitution / complementary effect is also noted between different forms of EM methods. The impact of these EM strategies on acquiring firm’s performance is also analyzed. A moderate way of EM has positive impact on future operating performance while a high degree of these EM behaviors bring a negative impact. Nonetheless, it seems that the shareholders' wealth is only marginally affected by the choice of EM methods, in the short term as well as the long term

Full textAlthough the past works studied the electronic service quality in various contexts, no study proposed, until this day, an integrator model judging the electronic service quality offered by the accounting professionals. The objective of the present research is to identify the determiners of the electronic service quality of the accounting professional and to propose an evaluation model allowing to explai it. The research model was tested by mobilizing jointly the quantitative approcah (survey by questionnaire with 110 customers) and the qualitative approcah (30 semi-directive interviews) according to triangulation logic. The results showed that the electronic service quality is a complex and multidimensional concept. Thus, it dismisses to a joint appreciation of three multidimensional concepts : the electronic system quality, the web interface quality and the service quality

Full textThe subject of this thesis is the study of earnings announcements on the French financial market and the analysis of the quality of accounting information. The first part of this work consists of presenting the various scientific evolutions in the field. It is about a presentation of the federative elements of the normative theory and positive theory. It recounts the various evolutions of the theory as part of the analysis of the earnings. The second part of our work proposes an analysis of the earnings at the time of the annual and semi-annual announcements ; this analysis is carried out at the same time on the prices and volumes. The results obtained show that accounting information is not equal value in time and according to firms'. Our study generates results sometimes different from what was already carried out in the United States. In order to better apprehend the existing divergences, we have first analyzed the devices which could be set up in order to solve uncertainty about the quality of accounting information. And then We have put forward the differences coming from the countable practices applicable in the United States and in France. Standards IAS will tend, in the long term, to dissipate the differences in interpretations but they will not be able to solve the permanent quality of information without a necessary reflexion about the transparency and about the role of the various participants in the economy

Full textA current of literature about the quality of the firms'information provided by famous databases in the U. S. A. , shows that many financial or accounting variables are biased depending upon the file used. Within this framework of research, our objective is to see if the accounting information included in 3 databases present in France, is also concerned with what is called the "database" bias. The question is then to see what are the consequences of this bias in the empirical results obtained in accounting research applied to the French case. Firstable, we evidence that many items of the financial statements are significantly different between the 3 files involved. Three major sources of discrepancy are detected but the phenomenon of the errors is not significant. .

Full textThis dissertation addresses the following question: "which determinants explain the quality of accounting information disclosed by French companies in their corporate annual reports?" the answer is both theoretical and empirical. A theoretical framework of all potential disclosure determinants is developed. In order to develop this framework, a census of every explanatory factor and its possible influence on disclosure quality, in a French context, is conducted, based on an extensive survey of theoretical and empirical literature on corporate disclosure. The framework theorizes the network of links between factors themselves or between factors and disclosure quality. The empirical study reports on the disclosure quality of a sample of French listed companies and relates that quality to several firms' attributes. The analysis extends to 100 French listed firms over a five years long period (1991-1995). The independent variables selected to explain extent of disclosure quality are measures of ownership diffusion, financial leverage, listing status and performances. Their influence is justified by agency theory. In order to measure disclosure quality an index has been developed. This index is based on a list of items to capture levels of disclosure quality. The selection of items relies mainly on French financial analysts' information requirements. A scoring scheme is associated to the list. It captures the importance a sample of financial analysts place in each item. This scoring sheet helps to compute index scores of qualities. Results of this research enhance our understanding of disclosure practices in France and their determinants. They also provide clues that these practices are changing and getting closer to Anglo-Saxon patterns of disclosure

Full textThis dissertation includes two studies. The first study analyzes the impact of auditor quality and audit regulation on the quality of accounting information, particularly on tradeoff between accrual-based and activity-based earnings management. In the second study in order to better understand the audit fees incurred by listed European companies we analysis the impact of audit regulation on the level of audit fees. Our representative sample is 4219 firms listed on European capital markets from 15 European countries over the period 2007 to 2010. Based on our sample, in the first study we analyze the respective impacts of both auditor quality and audit regulation on earnings quality. We capture auditor quality through using both audit firm size and audit firm industry specialization. We analyze five attributes of audit regulation including namely duration of audit tenure, restrictions on provision of non-audit services, nature of the auditors’ liability, constraints on audit partners’ rotation and obligation of a joint audit. Our main results are as follows: A) Only income-increasing earnings management, which is resulted in overstated earnings, is affected by auditor quality or audit regulations. B) Audit firm expertise influences negatively on the level of the both accrual-based earnings management and activity-based earnings management. Audits provided by large audit firms (i.e. Big4 auditors), have no impact on both accrual-based and activity-based earnings management. C) Audit firm expertise is not the only factor that affects audit quality and earnings quality. Regulation that governs audit services plays a major role in earnings quality as well. Two regulatory attributes have significant beneficial impact on accrual-based earnings management: the nature of the auditor’s liability and the minimal duration of the audit mandate. D) There is a substitution effect between accrual-based and activity-based earnings management, regarding the two attributes of audit regulation that are effective in curbing discretionary accruals. Because of regulatory constraints, the firms that cannot manage accruals upward apply more real activity management, and consequently their earnings are left affected by management actions. In 14 European countries, the diversity of regulations that govern statutory audits provides us with the opportunity to analyze how audit regulation affects audit fees. Using a sample of 4293 European firms over the period 2003 to 2011, in the second study we analyze the attributes of audit regulation, namely duration of audit tenure, restrictions on provision of non-audit services and nature of the auditors’ liability joint audit. Based on Our main results, in addition to usual determinants of audit fees (auditor reputation, firm size, leverage, audit risk…), the three attributes under study impact audit fees significantly. Fees are lower when regulation allows long audit tenure, or non-audit services, as well as when the auditor’s liability is based on tort law

Full textThe deepening crisis in public finances places public financial information at the heart of public policy management. As such, under the impetus of technical and financial partners, the West African Economic and Monetary Union (WAEMU) adopted a second harmonised public finance framework in 2009, after the 1997 one. A new public accounting system, close to that of the private sector, is promoted by a series of directives. The major innovation remains the promotion of accrual accounting for member states. It is based on international standards, notably the West African Accounting System (WAAS). The only limit lies in the specificity of the State. The nature of public accounting is fundamentally changing. It is captured as financial information system that must guarantee regular, sincere and faithful public accounts. In this respect, the study uses an analytical approach and applied to the national legal and accounting orders to demonstrate that the movement towards regionalization of WAEMU legal standards is indicative of the creation of an autonomous public accounting law based on a new conception of the production of financial information

An effort is made in France in the public sector at a central and local level since 2006.The question of accounting quality in this sector is not so explored in the literature and we developed an adapted framework for assessing the level of accounting quality in French municipalities and its accounting comprehensive risk factor variables. We noticed the magnitude of the adjustments and their heterogeneity. The Logit model that was established helped to build an accounting risk scenario in French municipalities

Full textThis dissertation focuses on factors of audit committee efficiency and their impacts on audit and financial information quality. In our literature review, we identify two frameworks. The first is based on the influence of audit committee’s membership over its efficiency. The second is related to dynamics around and in the committee. This framework brings us to study the impact of audit committee members’ change dynamics on its efficiency, and to analyse power relations between audit committee members and CEO. Analysis of these factors is based on an original database which regroups the companies forming the SBF-120 over the 2007-2016 period. We highlight the effect of audit committee members’ renewal on audit quality. We also show the audit committee influence relative to the CEO to assure quality of financial information

Full textThe quality of certification of accounts rendered by the legal audit firms is an important element in the transparency of economic activities. Many actors contribute to the quality: auditors as individuals, audit firms as legal persons and professional organizations that develop professional standards and control audit procedures. The audit firm must reconcile its lucrative aim and the demands of different stakeholders. The firm must therefore be performing at several levels. This research studies the performance dimensions of the audit firms in their legal mission in France. To construct a measure of the dimensions of performance, we adopted the approach of Churchill (1979). The proposed tool to measure performance is in the form of a strategic scorecard, which is a combination of the Balanced Scorecard (Kaplan and Norton, 1992, 1998, 2000), the Skandia's Navigator (Edvinsson and Malone, 1997), as well as of the approach by immaterial capital (Roos et al., 1997, Johnson, 1999). Based on the data collected from qualitative and quantitative surveys, the principal component analysis (PCA) on each of the performance dimensions emerges axes among the performance items revealed by French auditors. After that, a confirmatory analysis (CFA) must help us to validate the proposed model, and a typology analysis will be realized in order to identify the strategic scoreboard corresponding to each type of firm

Full textIn 2003, the promulgation of the financial security act (LSF) has changed the institutional architecture and audit practice in France. Through the addition of new rules imposed by this act to the persistent specificities since 1966 as the joint audit and tenure of six years, the audit market shows unique. This research examines the impact of this regulatory merger on the quality and the cost of the audit in France. Based on a sample composed by 888 observations of the SBF 250 over the 2005-2010, we found the contribution of rotation audit partners in restricting managerial discretion. Besides its advantage in promoting audit quality, this device supports the negotiation of lower audit fees. We also emphasized the evolution in the parabolic form of the discretionary accruals over tenure. Indeed, the audit quality is lower during the first and last phase of the engagement. This assumption refers to strengthening the skills over time and erosion of critical appraisal at the end of audit tenure. The shift from regulatory fusion helps to maintain the level of high quality on the French market. The combination of the two teams with different listener-audited tenures is a constraint to managerial discretion. However, this shift should not be excessive to limit the oldest’ domination. This drawback of the system of joint audits is limited in the French market. Our results confirm its effectiveness, mainly in the case of two Big 4

Full textThe impact of regulation on the behavior of firms is a subject of constant debate between more or less need for public intervention in the decision process of firms. In this thesis, I investigate the direct effect on targeted firms and the indirect effect on peer firms of law enforcement using the cases enforced between 1978 and 2015 under Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA), the U.S. Anti-Bribery law, as a framework. I firstly review the literature on earnings management, and more specifically on accrual-based models, to analyze the efficiency of accrual-based models to capture changes in regulation. In a second paper, I investigate with my co-author the accrual quality of bribe-paying firms and their competitors and find a positive effect of law enforcement on the accrual quality of bribe-paying firms’ competitors, but not the bribe-paying firms. Our results suggest a positive impact of antibribery law enforcement that incentivizes other firms to enhance their accounting information once they acknowledge a bribing behavior of a peer following the information risk channel. In a third paper, I focus on the indirect effect of law enforcement on peer firms and investigate the real economic effects of anti-bribery enforcement on the level of investment of peers. I find that peer firms decrease the level of their investment once they acknowledge the opening of a FCPA investigation in their industry. More surprisingly, I find a weakening in the decrease of investment for the cases acknowledged after December 2004, when the prosecutor used for the first time alternative resolution vehicles to conclude a FCPA case. These results suggest that, beyond the impact of law enforcement itself, the prosecution mode also affects the behavior of peer firms. In sum, this thesis shows that anti-bribery law enforcement can have a deterrent effect that impacts peer firms, who tend to adapt their behavior in response to a regulatory stimulus

Full textThis study develops and empirically tests an explanatory model in order to study the dysfunctional behaviors of financial auditors. The literature review allows to identify the main factors having a significant impact on malfunctions (budget pressure, time deadline pressure...). This research proposes extending the scope of the determinants in a relational and managerial perspective. To this end, it mobilizes mainly Leader-Member Exchange theory (LMX), but also the role modeling and the assessment style of auditors performance. Our study is based on a questionnaire which was sent to senior auditors who work in the large auditing networks which constitute the main actors of the audit market in France, specifically of Anglo-Saxon (Big 4) and French (Mazars) origins. To test our hypotheses, the estimation method of Seemingly Unrelated Regression (SUR) was applied. The results show that the three dimensions of Leader Member-Exchange (LMX), namely affection, loyalty and contribution have a negative and significant impact on the adaptive behaviors (respectively unprofessional behaviors: CNP, mismanagement of the audit team: MGE and Quality-Threatening Behavior: QTB). Also, results highlight under the effect of mimetic, managerial behaviors adopted by a superior have been shown to reduce the MGE, but also QTB and CNP. In addition, it was revealed that a favorable perception of organizational support and an evaluation focused on social criteria result in less QTB and MGE respectively. Finally, the analyses confirm the results of previous research concerning the impact of the style assessment based on technical criteria, affective commitment, budget pressure and time deadline pressure on such types of behavior

Full textThis dissertation consists of three essays on two well-documented anomalies: momentum effect and accrual anomaly. The first essay investigates whether the magnitude of accrual anomaly is driven by the financial distress probability. The results indicate that accrual anomaly is economically and statistically positive for firms with low financial distress probability, but insignificant for those with high financial distress probability. This means that that accrual anomaly is not pervasive but limited to firms with low financial distress probability. The second essay extends the research question addressed in the first essay into the emerging stock market of Vietnam. Similar to the findings in the first essay, the results indicate that the accrual anomaly is limited to the stocks with low financial distress probability. The last essay examines whether the momentum effect occurs in the Vietnamese stock market. The results support the occurrence of momentum in the short-run and also reveal that winner and loser returns are low persistent, but the strong correlation between winner and loser returns creates significant momentum profits

Full textThis research follows work by parasuraman, zeithaml and berry (1984, 1988) and chebat and filiatrault (1987). Its aim was to identify the construct relating to the percetion of professional service quality and the links between the perceived service quality and the consumer's intented loyalty. The research as carried out in the field of chartered accountancy in quebec (canada). A sample of 340 enterprise managers responded to a questionnaire sent out by mail. The questionnaire was divided into four main parts. The first part leasured the respondent's involvement using kapferer and laurent's (1986) profile, the second part measured service quality using servqual de parasuraman, zeithaml and berry's (1988) model, the third part measured attribution according to the four aspects of kelley's (1972) model, and the last part measured the manager's intended loyalty towards the service provider. The results show that the managers' level of involvement has a significant impact on the assessment of service quality and the attribution process. They also reveal a significant link between intended loyalty and perceived service quality. Finally, the research shows that, during assessment of the quality of a service, the attribution process acts as a mediatory variable in the relationship between intended loyalty and assessed quality

Full textIn the context of rapidly increasing interest of regulators, legislators and academic research in the identity of audit engagement partners, this dissertation explores French mandatory joint audit environment where firms preparing consolidated financial statements are jointly audited by two independent audit firms. The composition of joint audit partners may include same gender audit partners (two male, two female) or gender-diverse audit partners (one male and one female). This dissertation aims to examine whether gender-diverse audit partners provide higher audit quality compared with same gender audit partners. We argue that gender-diverse engagement partners are more likely to promote effective monitoring and collaborative behavior with regard to audit process and may positively influence audit quality. We investigate the issue of audit quality by examining input- and output-based measures, namely, audit fees and discretionary accruals. We use data on French listed firms and apply appropriate econometrical procedures to alleviate concerns about endogeneity issues. The empirical findings show that gender-diverse audit partners charge 11% audit fee premium and their clients exhibit lower levels of absolute and signed discretionary accruals. Collectively, we provide considerable evidence that gender-diverse audit partners produce higher-quality audits. In the aftermath of gender quota legislation, the current dissertation also examines whether gender profile of audit clients affect the selection/assignment of gender-diverse audit partners. Contrary to the gender similarity (homophily) argument—based on comprehensive analyses of client-partner gender alignments—we provide compelling evidence that that female directors appointed to monitoring positions on the board, compared to female inside directors, tend to select higher quality “auditor pairs” (i.e., gender-diverse engagement partners)

Debate on the exact effects of the financial divulgation process and the management behaviour are always of current events. Works on this subject are numerous; they treat, generally, determinants of accounting strategy, with multiple approaches and leading to different results. This thesis contributes to such efforts by analyzing the case of Tunisia and by insisting on the position of audit quality in explaining the importance of earnings management.

Full textThe corneal quality control (QC) in eye banks is essential for the assessment of the quality of grafts. In the first part, we showed on 505 consecutive corneas, that the parameters measured by our image analyzer Sambacornea (size CV and hexagonality of endothelial cells) were entirely consistent with those measured by specular microscopy in vivo in patients. Our device provides a reliable validated method for the measurement of the Endothelial Cell Density ECD and cell morphometry. In a second part, we analyzed the inherent errors of the fixed-frame counting method (calibrated grid or graticule) for corneal ECD in eye banks. We measured in 3000 areas, the 20 corneal mosaic ECD using grids ranged from 50 to 300 µm. The method was repeatable with 200 µm long grids if the average of 10 counts were used: it showed a residual variability of 5 % vs the real ECD. Conventional 100 µm long grids used in manual counting should be abandoned and replaced by 200 µm grids. The digital image analysis, however, is the best solution. In the third part, the development of a device for measuring the transparency and effective diameters in corneal transplantation (clear cornea and total diameter) is described. Transparency is assessed by measuring the modulation transfer function through the cornea on an original pattern designed in our laboratory. The measurements were reproducible. Based on the analysis of 358 corneas routine, transparency was not correlated with donor age, or the ECD, and decreased with duration of stockage. This simple and objective device standardizes the QC "transparency" and it should be used with our bioreactor, and could lead to the definition of a level for transparency

Full textThis dissertation investigates and empirically tests the relationship between corporate governance strength and corporate governance effectiveness on the quality of the reported financial statements. Despite, concerns about the strengthen of the corporate governance structure and its effectiveness on earnings management, the relation between corporate governance strength and corporate governance effectiveness is not empirically well developed in France.Using three stages of follow-up studies, this research estimates the specificities of the French corporate governance on the quality of financial statements from a factorial confirmatory analysis, a binary logistic regression and discretionary models based on "accruals", "revenues" and scores of manipulations. The estimation of the parameters of the models and the duration of the study were fixed after the check of the comparability of the accounting numbers after the adoption of the IAS/IFRS GAAP.The main results indicate that it is necessary to generalize certain practices of the French corporate governance, by giving support to both the legislator and the partisans of the financial reforms in order to enhance the quality of the financial information
