Abstract:
Background: Open-access is free online access to articles, journal, conferences proceedings, book series and trade journal which provides unrestricted and permit the users to read, download, print, copy and link to the articles. Many articles that discuss the journal metrics using basic statistical methods to discribe the journal. Objective: This research groups journals based on numerical quality measures, identifying quality characteristics for each group. The findings provide a reference for researchers to select suitable journals and for journal owners to improve journal quality. Methods: There is another method to describe the open-access journal by grouping it into groups with the homogeneous characteristics based on five types of numerical quality measure that are analyzed simultaneously, namely cluster analysis. By using cluster analysis, the article’s owner can determine which journals he can choose to publish it in according to the desired journal quality. Based in the result, 5146 open-access journals can be divided into four clusters by using CLARA algorithm. Cluster 1, 2 and 3 have high characteristics in all numerical quality measure and cluster 4 have low characteristics in all numerical quality measure. So that researchers can choose journals in clusters 1, 2, and 3 as a place to publish their research by adjusting the journal's scope. Results: This study demonstrates that the CLARA algorithm successfully grouped 5146 open-access journals indexed by SCOPUS into four clusters based on quality characteristics. Cluster 1 consists of 39 journals with high values across all quality variables, Cluster 2 includes 50 journals with similarly high values, Cluster 3 contains 430 journals with comparable characteristics, and Cluster 4, comprising 4627 journals, exhibits low values in all quality variables. Furthermore, the majority of journals (89.914%) have numerical quality measures below the average. Conclusion: This study concludes that journals in Clusters 1, 2, and 3 can be recommended as suitable options for researchers to publish their work, considering the relevance of the journal's scope. Additionally, these findings can serve as a reference for journal owners to improve the quality of their journals to meet higher standards.

Abstract:

The quality of the research can be measured by a set of standards and indicators that focus on the idea of research originality, the depth of discussion, the literature analysis techniques, and the quality of research instruments. This research aims to evaluate the quality of Arab journals of special education (AJSEs). Five AJSEs were evaluated, all specializing in special education in the Arab world. The AJSEs were issued in Egypt, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and Yemen. A checklist of 20 indicators was developed and applied to these journals. Results revealed that 5 indicators were highly met, 11 indicators were moderately met, and 4 indicators were low met in AJSEs. The results also indicated a difference in the quality indicators achievability (QIA) according to the journal's name. The QIA in International Journal for Talent Development, and Journal of Special Education and Rehabilitation was considerable. While, the QIA of the Saudi Journal of Special Education and Arab Journal of Disability and Talent Sciences was moderate, and it was low in Journal of Special Education.

Abstract:
Many lists that purport to gauge the quality of journals in management and organization studies (MOS) are based on the judgments of experts in the field. This article develops an identity concerns model (ICM) that suggests that such judgments are likely to be shaped by the personal and social identities of evaluators. The model was tested in a study in which 168 editorial board members rated 44 MOS journals. In line with the ICM, respondents rated journal quality more highly to the extent that a given journal reflected their personal concerns (associated with having published more articles in that journal) and the concerns of a relevant ingroup (associated with membership of the journal’s editorial board or a particular disciplinary or geographical background). However, judges’ ratings of journals in which they had published were more favorable when those journals had a low-quality reputation, and their ratings of journals that reflected their geographical and disciplinary affiliations were more favorable when those journals had a high-quality reputation. The findings are thus consistent with the view that identity concerns come to the fore in journal ratings when there is either a need to protect against personal identity threat or a meaningful opportunity to promote social identity.

Abstract:
This study examined perceived journal quality by physical education pedagogy faculty members. Participants (N = 273) were identified in three ways and recruited through e-mail. Based on research in other fields investigating journal quality and on publication patterns in physical education, a web-based survey was used to examine (a) whether participants knew a journal and viewed it as scholarly, (b) ratings of journal quality, (c) what factors influenced their ratings, and (d) demographic and scholarly productivity measures. There was a wide range of journals known by the participants and clear indicators of which journals had higher and lower perceived quality. There were differences in ratings between those employed at master’s and doctoral institutions and relationships between scholarly productivity and the number of journals known. The results provide strong indications of journal quality for those who have reasons to evaluate journals in physical education.

We present the results of 2 studies, a citation-based study and an opinion-based study, that ranked the relative quality of 20 English-language journals that exclusively or extensively publish mathematics education research. We further disaggregate the opinion-based data to provide insights into variations in judgment of journal quality based on geographic location, journal affiliations and publishing records, and experience in the field. We also report factors that survey respondents indicated were important indicators of journal quality. Finally, we compare our results to previous related rankings and conclude by discussing how our results might inform authors, editors, and evaluators in their efforts to publish and recognize quality research in mathematics education.

Objectives: To test the feasibility of obtaining a baseline level of quality of reporting for cost-utility analysis (CUA) studies using the British Medical Journal economic submissions checklist, test interrater reliability of this tool, and discuss its longer term implications. Methods: CUA studies in peer-reviewed English language journals in 1996, assessed using the British Medical Journal checklist, a quality index, and interrater reliability correlations. Results: Forty-three CUA studies were assessed, with 23 checklist items acceptable and 10 items inadequate. Lowest quality scores were reported in specialist medical journals. Proportional agreement between assessors was over 80%.Conclusions: The British Medical Journal checklist is a feasible tool to collect baseline information on the quality of reporting in journals other than the British Medical Journal. Editors of specialist medical journals are in greatest need of economic guidance. If handled carefully, they might consider adopting the British Medical Journal checklist.

Xu, Fang. "Bibliometric assessments of research output quality within the HEFCE framework." Thesis, University of Kent, 2011. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.590068.

Full text
Abstract:
In this thesis we propose a feasible bibliometric assessment framework of research output quality derived from the definition of research proposed by Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE). Based on this basic framework, we show that research output can be assessed from two elements: significance of new insights and effectiveness of sharing based on the new insights. We investigate this issue from two levels: research publication's quality assessment and academic journal's quality assessment. With regard to measurement of research publications, we confirm citation information is accepted as a measure of effectiveness of sharing regardless of various reasons of citation behavior. On the other hand, we observe there are no sufficient studies on bibliometric indices for significance of new insights, based on information other than citations. In this thesis, we theoretically develop some non-citation based bibliometric measurements via utilizing journal characteristics (e.g. journal acceptance rate (JAR) or journal rejection rate (JRR)). Their strength and weakness are shown in our empirical studies. Furthermore, we believe a more complete assessment for research output quality can be achieved by combining information from the two elements. Several combination approaches such as function combination (i.e. production of two indicators) and Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) approach are proposed and testified on real data sets like the Association of "- Business School (ABS) journal ranking and Research Assessment Exercise (RAE). Secondly, we utilize a part of the HEFCE framework for journal quality assessment from wider perspectives. To this end two ranking approaches are introduced to serve different stakeholders, and Operational Research/Management Science (OR/MS) journals are employed in the empirical studies. Finally, we report a real project of the 3E (i.e. Efficacy, Efficiency, Effectiveness) theory in an international research institute ranking, jointly carried out by the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), China, and the Centre for Evaluation of Research Performance (CERP), University of Kent, UK.

Abstract:
The research journal especially in marketing, is now not only the primary communication method, but is also used to evaluate an academic's research contribution. Measuring the quality of research journals has also become more complex as a result of the rapid increase in the number of journals published. In marketing research, scientists have professed the use of sophisticated or more sensitive techniques yet little has been done to improve the measurement of research journals. This thesis investigates the use of alternative measurement techniques to explore this important aspect of the academic environment. Historically two dominant methodologies have been used to measure the quality ofjournals: Peer review and Citation Analysis. However these methods have been criticised and academics have been sceptical of the results, taking the opinion that these methods create, bias in the results. Previous methods have also taken a one-dimensional view of journal quality with little time devoted to uncovering the criteria that governs that quality. The research applied marketing methodologies that combined qualitative and quantitative research techniques to explore the problem. Four critical research questions were examined in this study. What are the important elements of journal research standing? 38 items were found to be important elements ofjoumal research standing. Is journal research standing a multi-dimensional construct? Three underlying dimensions represented the construct journal research standing, these were Reputation, Reviewing Standards and Content Quality. Do academics acknowledge the multiple dimensions of journal research standing? Academics acknowledged the -differences -between dimensions for ten selected marketing journals. What moderating factors affect academic opinions of journal research standing? Academic attitudes towards a joutnal's research stdtiding are moderated by their country of origin, familiarity and research fit. Attitudes towards a journal may also be moderated when academics have a paper rejected from that particular journal.

Abstract:
Documentation in electronic journals is perceived as time consuming and sometimes technically difficult to handle, but also leads to an improved quality of care. Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate nurses' perceptions of documentation with a focus on timing, technique and quality of care and whether any differences in these perceptions were dependent on age. Method: Quantitative descriptive cross-sectional study in the survey form, 28 nurses at a university hospital in central Sweden participated in the study. Regression analysis was performed with Spearman's rank correlation coefficient. Results: Electronic documentation takes 30 to 60 minutes for most nurses and half of them considered it a reasonable time. Computer skills were good enough for most, but the computers and the electronic patient record system Cosmic were experienced to work less well or badly in half the study group. Two-thirds of the studygroup agreed partly or more to that the quality of care is adversely affected because of the time documentation takes from the patient care. However, about half of the study group agreed that electronic patient records increase health care quality and patient safety. Care plans were used to a great extent. Young nurses rated themselves significantly better than the older ones to handle a computer in their daily work. Conclusion: A variety of problems and perceptions exist in connection with electronic documentation. Continuous development of technology, documentation systems and the use of care plans can contribute to the continuing high quality of care and patient safety.<br>Dokumentation i elektronisk journal uppfattas som tidskrävande och ibland tekniskt svår att hantera, men leder även till en ökad vårdkvalitet. Vårdplaner används i hög utsträckning.

Abstract:
This thesis consists of three essays, linked by innovation, classification and change. In the first paper, I analyze a theoretical problem regarding the reemergence and affirmation of a technological paradigm over the others; in the second article, I propose a framework to aggregate journal rankings and classify academic journals; in the third essay I analyze the performance of Open Access journals, considered an innovative form of publishing, with the aim of identifying the main features of top-rated ones. More specifically, the first essay deals on the technological life cycle which explains how the battles between competing technologies sooner or later end with the dominance of one over the others, or, under certain conditions, with their coexistence. However, the practice points out that, sometimes, beaten technologies can re-emerge in the market. Firms dealing with technology investment decisions need to completely understand the competing technologies dynamics, because the emergence of an alternative and potentially superior technology does not necessarily mean the failure of the incumbent, and different scenario would be traced. Starting from the analysis of the microprocessor market and considering the relationships with complementary companies, I show how the battle for dominance between two rival technologies can be reopened with a new era of ferment. While factors of dominance have been explored by a great amount of literature, little has been said on this question. In particular, I find a non-conventional S-curve trend and I seek to explicate its managerial implication. The second chapter deals with ranking academic journals, an issue that during the years received several contribute from literature of Business and Management [DuBois and Reeb, 2000, Franke et al, 1990, Serenko and Bontis, 2004, Tüselmann et al, 2015, Werner, 2002]. Ranking journals is a longstanding problem and can be addressed quantitatively, qualitatively or using a combination of both approaches. In the last decades, the Impact Factor (i.e., the most known quantitative approach) has been widely questioned, and other indices have thus been developed and become popular. Previous studies have reported strengths and weaknesses of each index, and devised meta-indices to rank journals in a certain field of study. However, the proposed meta-indices exhibit some intrinsic limitations: (i) the indices to be combined are not always chosen according to well-grounded principles; (ii) combination methods are usually unweighted; and (iii) some of the proposed meta-indices are parametric, which requires assuming a specific underlying data distribution. I propose a data-driven methodology that linearly combines an arbitrary number of indices to produce an aggregated ranking, using different learning techniques to estimate the combining weights. I am also able to measure correlations and distances between indices and meta-indices in a vector space, to quantitatively evaluate their differences. The goal of the third essay, is to identify the features of top-rated gold open access (OA) journals by testing seven main variables: languages, countries, years of activity and years in the DOAJ repository, publication fee, the field of study, whether the journal has been launched as OA or converted, and the type of publisher. A sample of 1,910 gold OA journals has been obtained by combining SCImago Journal & Country Rank (SJR) 2012, the DOAJ, and data provided by previous studies [Solomon, 2013]. I have divided the SJR index into quartiles for all journals' subject areas. First, I show descriptive statistics by combining quartiles based on their features. Then, after having converted the quartiles into a dummy variable, I test it as a dependent variable and in a binary logistic regression. This work contributes empirically to better understanding the gold OA efficacy, which may be helpful in improving journals' rankings in the areas where this is still a struggle. Significant results have been found for all variables, except for the types of publishers, and for born or converted journals.

Abstract:
É necessário reorientar o cuidado, o foco não deve ser a doença, é preciso olhar para o indivíduo, que deve ser assistido integralmente e de maneira holística.<br>Patients with hemophilia are predisposed to bleeding, both post-traumatic as spontaneous, occurring mainly in the joints (hemarthrosis) and, when recurrent, they may contribute to the establishment of hemophilic arthropathy, which makes the disease potentially disabling and painful, and considerably affects the quality of life (QoL) of patients with the disease. Evaluate the QoL of these patients gives us the subsidy to provide measures that aim to improve the assistance provided and the patients well-being. In this regard, through an important edition of the infusion journal it is possible to follow the care provided. The aim of the study was to evaluate the quality of life of hemophilia patients followed by the HEMOMINAS Foundation clinic in Manhuaçu, using specific tools and implement the use of an Infusion Diary as a strategy to increase assistance. This is a descriptive quantitative study. For the evaluation of QoL, it was used the ICF (International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health) proposed by the WHO. The tools include: a sociodemographic questionnaire; Haem-A-Qol; Haemo-Qol; HAL, pedHAL; HJHS e FISH. 30 male patients with hemophilia joined the study, which represented 90.9% of the eligible sample. In patients older than 18 years (n = 24), the Haem-A-Qol average score was 53.39. In the HAL, the average was 67.26. In the HJHS, the average score was 37.33. In the FISH, the average score was 25.96. In patients under 18 (n = 06), the Haemo-Qol was answered by patients and their parents. In the questionnaire answered by the patient the average score was 50.36, and in the parents\' score was 55.16. In PedHAL, the average score of the patients was 88.59 and their parents 83.15. The average score in the HJHS was 5.67. Regarding FISH, all patients under 18 years of age (n = 06) reached a maximum score and performed all activities without assistance. The journal of infusion was built and implemented as a tool to enhance the assistance, aiming to stimulate the progressive improvement of the quality of life. The quality of life of patients followed was different, younger ones with better results. The reality of hemophilia management is challenging. It is necessary to reorient care, the focus should not be in the disease, it is necessary to look for the individual, who should be fully assisted in the holistic way.

Abstract:

Abstract:
AbstractCancer research is needed in the Arab world to provide evidence to healthcare workers and health policy makers. This chapter examines the literature on cancer research productivity in the Arab world, and the output of the 22 countries with respect to the number of publications, main types of cancers studied and top journals that researchers aim to publish their findings in. Although the Arab region is lagging in its cancer research output, it is reassuring that productivity has been on the rise in the last decade. There are great variations between countries in their contribution to cancer research, with Egypt and Saudi Arabia contributing the most and sub-Saharan Arab countries the least. Breast cancer is the most researched cancer in the Arab countries, overshadowing other leading cancers. The top journals that researchers published their work in are the Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention, Pan African Medical Journal, Saudi Medical Journal, Tunisie Medicale, the Gulf Journal of Oncology and the Journal of the Egyptian National Cancer Institute. The last two occupied the fifth rank equally. All these journals are Q3 journals except for the first, which is a Q2 journal. The challenges and barriers facing researchers in the Arab world should be examined and sources of cancer research funding expanded. Collaborations with researchers in international academic institutions should be encouraged to improve the quantity and quality of cancer research.

Abstract:
AbstractFinding a suitable open access journal to publish scientific work is a complex task: Researchers have to navigate a constantly growing number of journals, institutional agreements with publishers, funders’ conditions and the risk of Predatory Publishers. To help with these challenges, we introduce a web-based journal recommendation system called B!SON. It is developed based on a systematic requirements analysis, built on open data, gives publisher-independent recommendations and works across domains. It suggests open access journals based on title, abstract and references provided by the user. The recommendation quality has been evaluated using a large test set of 10,000 articles. Development by two German scientific libraries ensures the longevity of the project.

Abstract:
This study presents a critical analysis of Brazil's journal classification system, Qualis, examining its evolution and effectiveness in assessing journal quality across diverse academic disciplines. The analysis highlights recent Qualis reforms, including unique classifications, and the adoption of "mother areas", plus the application of bibliometric indicators. Preliminary findings from the mid-term evaluation of graduate programs reveal discrepancies between how chosen indicators, including CiteScore and Journal Impact Factor, fail to align with expert committees’ assessment of the same journals. As expected, while these indicators correlate with peer review in a high percentage of STEM journals, they are far from effective in SSH. The study emphasizes the importance of further analysing Qualis' improvements and the role of evaluation committees as the final Qualis classification is released in 2023, thus determining if the system has evolved into a more representative evaluation framework or if its critics are justified in calling for its extinction.

Abstract:
Despite of its many limitations, the Journal Impact Factor (JIF) is widely used to evaluate research institutions and individual researchers. Using references from 41 German medical guidelines we show that clinical relevance as assessed by guideline authors is uncorrelated to the JIF suggesting that a journal’s clinical relevance is independent of its JIF. As a consequence, evaluations solely relying on the JIF end up under-valuing clinically important research. We therefore propose a Guideline Impact Factor (GLIF) quantifying the relevance of journals for medical guideline development as an independent quality criterion for journals.

Abstract:
This paper demonstrates how quality control infrastructure can be generated from a single requirements document. Taken from a recent project that is now being used in production at a large journal publisher, it discusses some of the challenges faced and techniques used when generating Schematron, XSpec tests, XML grammar checks, and documentation. The project set out to implement quality control requirements for journal articles using Schematron. In pursuing this objective, the project also created quality control infrastructure for Schematron itself that streamlines the process for incorporating iterative changes to requirements. The techniques used in this project and described in this paper may be generally applicable in other projects.

Abstract:
This study compares citation-based and expert-based journal metrics as predictors of peer-assessed research quality based on 154,826 journal articles submitted to UK’s Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2021. The Finnish expert-based Julkaisufoorumi (JUFO) level ratings of journals determined by expert-panels per field produce scores that correlate more strongly with REF scores than those based on citation-based Journal Impact Factor (JIF) or Journal Citation Indicator (JCI) Quartiles. This holds true at aggregate levels of 34 Subject areas, 157 Higher Education Institutions (HEI), and 1,888 Units of Assessment (UoA). Especially non-field-normalised JIF-based scores correlate poorly with REF scores. All types of journal metrics are more aligned with expert-based REF scores at the highest aggregate level of HEIs and agree less at the lower aggregate level of UoAs and Subject areas.

Abstract:
The use of the Journal Impact Factor as an indicator of the quality of individual articles and journals presents limitations. Here, we propose a new approach that combines citation distributions by percentiles, the number and proportion of uncited articles, and the number and proportion of publications below the mean citations in relation to the journal and the field as a method to measure the influence of the publications and their real visibility. We tested it with 10 journals under the Information Science and Library Science category (LIS) of the JCR whose articles were retrieved from OpenAlex for the period 2000-2020 and the results suggest that journals whose graphs present a lower proportion of articles below the mean citation in the category, a lower proportion of uncited documents, and a greater area below the diagonal are those that have more visibility, regardless of the number of publications and their age.

In ASME 2012 International Mechanical Engineering Congress and Exposition. American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2012. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/imece2012-85354.

Full text
Abstract:
Repairing marine diesel engine crankshafts is a significant part of overall engine repairs and thus is very important for the ship building and ship repair industry. When a ship’s diesel engine is repaired, crankshaft journal surfaces must be renewed according to very precise geometrical and surface roughness requirements. Although current technologies are sufficient to meet these requirements, they are very time consuming and consequently expensive. A comprehensive research into the surface machining of marine diesel engine crankshaft journals allowed to improve technological processes and to identify respective surface roughness parameters, as well as to provide appropriate technological recommendations. It is important to note that crankshaft journal surfaces must be seen as 3D objects, whose micro-topographical surface roughness parameters have to be defined so that they reflect the actual surface. To summarize all available scientific research in this field, we can state that there has been no analysis into the impact of technological regimes on the surface micro-topography of marine engine crankshaft journals. Bearing in mind the aforementioned arguments a study has been launched to develop a novel grinding technology, enabling diesel engine crankshafts with medium-sized crankpin journals to be repaired directly inside the engine housing. This paper covers the following issues: 1) Description of the novel technological equipment for crankshaft journal grinding; 2) 3D roughness model of the crankshaft journal surface; 3) calculation of 3D parameters based on practical metrological and technological characteristics. This technology saves significant financial resources as well as reduces engine repair time. By solving problems related to surface accuracy, it is possible to considerably improve the crankshaft machining process, along with the performance of maintenance operations and consequently the overall quality of repair work. In this paper, the crankshaft journal surfaces will be defined using 3D surface roughness parameters.

Melnyk, Yuriy. Academic Journal Website Model. KRPOCH, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.26697/preprint.melnyk.1.2018.

Full text
Abstract:
Background: The tens of thousands of academic journal websites that are on the Internet today often do not have a clear organizational structure for their website. If most of them are convenient enough for readers (if the journal is open access), then many have problems informing authors about the conditions, the process of submitting and reviewing the manuscript. The Editorial Offices empirically populate the journal's website with content that can change dramatically (both in terms of website design and content) as the journal develops. Aim of Study: To develop a website model for an academic journal that takes into account the basic requirements for the preparation, publication, and archiving of high quality scientific manuscripts. Material and Methods: The academic journal website model is based on a structural-functional approach. The website content consists of text and integrated applications. This model takes into account the basic requirements for the preparation, publication, and archiving of high-quality open access scientific manuscripts, as well as the indexing of journal articles by leading indexing agencies. Results: The academic journal website model is structured with the following menu and submenu elements: 1. HOME: 1.1. Journal information; 1.2. From the editorial office; 1.3. Databases, Indexing; 2. EDITORIAL BOARD: 2.1. Editorial board; 2.2. Reviewers; 2.3. Editing and reviewing process; 3. EDITORIAL POLICIES: 3.1. Editorial policies; 3.2. Plagiarism policy; 3.3. Open access policy; 3.4. The ethics codex of scientific publications; 3.5. Disclaimer; 3.6. License terms; 3.7. Terms of publications (fee); 4. ARCHIV: 4.1. Previous issues; 4.2. Current issue; 4.3. Articles online first; 5. INSTRUCTIONS FOR AUTHORS: 5.1. General recommendations; 5.2. Manuscript templates; 5.3. Supplemental materials; 6. STATISTICS: 6.1. Publications; 6.2. Authors; 6.3. Readers; 7. CONTACTS: 7.1. Contact; 7.2. Subscriptions; 7.3. Search. Conclusions: This academic journal website model was implemented for the International Journal of Science Annals (IJSA). Authors and readers of IJSA noted the advantages of the model proposed by the author, including: a convenient and understandable website interface, the availability of the necessary hyperlinks to the pages of the journal's website and external media (sites of indexed agencies, library archives, etc.), convenient search for information on the website and published in the journal articles (by author, publication, text of the article), availability of integrated applications (online submission of manuscripts, filing appeals against the decision of reviewers and complaints about published articles, viewing the interactive printed version of the journal, etc.), availability of templates (for authors, reviewers), availability of multiple formats for archiving articles (PDF, DOAJ, XML, TXT), the ability to choose the style of citing the article and the website language (English, Ukrainian), etc. Keywords: journal, model, website, academic, indexing

Abstract:
We analyze 6,400 letters of recommendation for more than 2,200 economics and finance Ph.D. graduates from 2018 to 2021. Letter text varies significantly by field of interest, with significantly less positive and shorter letters for Macroeconomics and Finance candidates. Letters for female and Black or Hispanic job candidates are weaker in some dimensions, while letters for Asian candidates are notably less positive overall. We introduce a new measure of letter quality capturing candidates that are recommended to “top” departments. Female, Asian, and Black or Hispanic candidates are all less likely to be recommended to top academic departments, even after controlling for other letter characteristics. Finally, we examine early career outcomes and find that letter characteristics, especially a “top” recommendation have meaningful effects on initial job placements and journal publications.

Abstract:
The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and state Departments of Transportation (DOTs) seek to provide high quality infrastructure that meets or exceeds the desired quality standards crucial for ensuring safety and efficiency in our nation's transportation systems. Efficient inspection practices—which enable conformance with plans, specifications, and quality standards—are an essential part of this effort. In this digital age, state DOTs are relying on emerging technologies to improve inspection practices. However, there is limited knowledge available regarding various emerging technologies used for highway infrastructure construction and maintenance inspection. This study identifies various emerging technologies that are implemented at the state DOTs and their uses/applications for various inspection purposes. The emerging technologies studied in this project include Remote Sensing and Monitoring Technologies—specifically, Unmanned Aerial Systems (UASs) and Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR)—as well as Building Information Modelling (BIM), and Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality (AR/VR). Based on a comprehensive literature review and content analysis of journal articles, technical reports, state DOT documents/reports, templates, and guidelines on the identified technologies, the research findings indicate different usage levels among state DOTs and found that DOTs use these technologies for applications such as structural inspection, verifying quantities, bridge and visual inspection, safety inspection, inspection workforce training, inspection documentation, and measurements of pay quantities, among others. This study serves as a valuable resource for state DOTs seeking to maximize the benefits of their investments and embrace innovative inspection technologies to ensure safety and efficiency in the nation's transportation infrastructure.
