Shen, Yang. "Transforming life in China : gendered experiences of restaurant workers in Shanghai." Thesis, London School of Economics and Political Science (University of London), 2015. http://etheses.lse.ac.uk/3205/.

Full text
Abstract:
Internal migration has played a major role in the transformation of post-reform China. To explore how migrants have experienced change I consider three aspects of the lives of a particular group of migrants working in a restaurant in Shanghai: work experiences, intimate relationships with partners and families, and leisure time. I aim to highlight both men and women’s experiences in order to analyse the significance of gender alongside social class and hukou status as markers of social division in China. Based on more than seven months of participant observation and interviews, mainly with migrant workers, between 2011 and 2014, my thesis aims to illuminate how this shift in location has affected their lives: how gender operated in their daily lives; how their experiences were gendered; and how agency was exercised, how subjectivity was expressed. In examining these different dimensions I consider how these migrants dealt with a range of tensions and hierarchies, such as the denigration they encountered from customers; the inconsistency between job hierarchy and gender hierarchy; how they reinterpreted filial piety; and how their income and time-constrained leisure formed part of their coping strategies in gender-differentiated ways. Primary findings are that these migrant workers experienced change in complex and contradictory ways. Some male workers in the lowest-level jobs, whose work primarily depended on physical labour, were disadvantaged in this gendered, feminised and hierarchical workplace. Their financial disadvantage made it difficult for them to find wives and to conform to the image of primary breadwinner post-marriage. However, men despite their disadvantaged position in the work place and in partner finding still exercised their male privilege in everyday gender relations and likewise the women still experienced sexual harassment. In comparison, the female migrant workers benefited in some ways by moving away from the tedium of rural lives and by becoming financially independent wage labour, but at the same time they still performed their filial obligation of financially supporting their natal families. These workers negotiated their changed circumstances in gendered ways. I argue that their subjectivities were influenced by a range of factors, including consumer culture and the patriarchal system, which was mediated through filial piety.

Abstract:
Shanghai Street is one of the oldest streets in Kowloon peninsula. The street was once a main business street in the area before being replaced by Nathan Road since 1970s. As the main business centre was shifted to Nathan Road, some of traditional neighbor shops still remain at the street. The key issue to be addressed by this dissertation is that although traditional neighbor shops and their businesses still exist at Shanghai Street, these shops have gradually diminished due to revitalization and gentrification of nearby streets. Tangible and intangible character defining elements of the street are diminishing. This dissertation will focus on the traditional neighbor shops and their businesses at Shanghai Street, by means of cultural mapping, and analysis the street in terms of tangible and intangible character defining elements. Shanghai Street, as one of the oldest streets in Hong Kong old urban district, can reflect the spirit and characteristic of Hong Kong “Street Life”. The objective of this dissertation is to understand and document traditional neighbor shops and their businesses at Shanghai Street, before the existing characters are gone.

Liu, Li. "Quality of life in China : a social representational approach." Thesis, London School of Economics and Political Science (University of London), 2003. http://etheses.lse.ac.uk/2520/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis explores how quality of life (QOL thereafter) is constructed by lay people in contemporary China. Theoretically, the thesis critiques the mainstream literature on QOL - which uses expert categories to distinguish sharply between "objective" and "subjective" factors in the assessment of QOL - for failing to address the lifeworld of ordinary people and the wealth of meanings which they attribute to QOL. The dominant literature is particularly problematic when transposed to a Chinese context. The thesis therefore proposes an alternative theoretical framework to study QOL: a social representational approach. This approach re-conceptualises QOL as a symbolic construction, which is inherently cultural and historical, and which takes on different meanings as a function of people's social milieus and particular social position. It posits QOL as a system of symbols and meanings structurally bound up with current societal changes in China. Methodologically, the research is based on five complementary research methods and data sets: word associations, semantic differentials, public discourse in the media, individual interviews and focus groups discussions. Data are collected both in rural and urban settings, and amongst different generations of Chinese people. The analysis shows that, deeply embedded in the collective memory of Chinese society, the representation QOL is organised around a central thema opposing having and being. Having and being are antinomic orientations, emphasizing material possessions and spiritual subsistence, respectively, on the one hand, and are dialogically interdependent, on the other. The synthesis of the opposites between having and being constitutes the deep structure of QOL. The thema of having/being is expressed in the two sets of semantic artefacts. Having is objectified in material possessions, together with the pleasure and positive symbolic meanings consequent upon such possessions. Being is objectified in rootedness, connectedness, participation and freedom, and manifested through joy. The thema of having/being spills over, permeates and underpins the critical domains of life: health, family, work, social relations and the natural environment, emphasizing the instrumental and expressive aspects of QOL in each domain. The thema of having/being, intertwined with the coexistence of rival cultural, political and economic systems - Confucianism, Marxism and capitalism - in China's current social transition, provides the framework within which lay people organise their everyday life, assess of their own QOL and develop aspirations.

Abstract:
This thesis investigates various representational modes and strategies in the Shanghai courtesan illustrations in Dianshizhai Pictorial. The aim of the study is to examine how Shanghai's early modern identity was imaged, imagined and contested through the courtesan figure. I argue that by establishing a new urban iconography, Dianshizhai Pictorial transformed the Shanghai courtesan from a traditional archetypical meiren to a universal image of the urban beauty. On the one hand, the modern city, previously an alien concept, was made familiar and acceptable through the image of the Shanghai courtesan. On the other hand, the ambivalence of the courtesan's new image mirrored a mixed feeling of fear, anxiety and disdain towards the emerging metropolis. The courtesan illustrations, hence, served as an important domain where different public understandings of the city were negotiated and expressed in pictorial terms.

Wong, King-ho, and 黃競浩. "Health-related quality of life of Chinese patients with colorectal neoplasms." Thesis, The University of Hong Kong (Pokfulam, Hong Kong), 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10722/193041.

Full text
Abstract:
Increasing number of people is diagnosed with colorectal neoplasms (CRN) in the form of polyps or cancers. Colorectal cancer (CRC) is one of the most common causes of cancer deaths among Chinese in Hong Kong. Advances in diagnosis and treatments have increased the survival rate of CRN patients, resulting in a large group of cancer survivors. Preserving and maintaining health-related quality of life (HRQOL) has become an important direction in research and clinical care of patients with CRN. This research aimed to evaluate the HRQOL and its association with socio-demographics and disease-related characteristics among patients with CRN, and illustrate how HRQOL data could be converted to preference for the estimation of quality adjustment of life years in health economic evaluations. This research comprised of three parts. First was the establishment of the validity and reliability of the traditional Chinese version of Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-Colorectal (FACT-C) as a HRQOL measure for Chinese patients by a cross-sectional sample of 536 adult patients with CRN. Psychometric testing and concurrent validation of the FACT-C with European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Core Questionnaire plus Colorectal-specific Module Questionnaire and the Short-Form 12-item Health Survey_Version2 (SF-12V2) were carried out. Second was a longitudinal study on the HRQOL of 554 CRN patients at baseline, six (n=479) and twelve (n=414) months of recruitment. The associations of HRQOL with socio-demographics and disease-related factors, and change of HRQOL over time were explored. Comparisons of HRQOL between CRN patients and the general population and among different CRN groups were made. Cross-sectional data were used to develop mapping functions to estimate SF-6D preference scores from FACT-C subscale scores. Third was the application of the health preference scores by CRN stages collected at baseline of the longitudinal study, in combination with survival data extracted from the literature in a Markov model on the cost-effectiveness of different CRC screening strategies (colonoscopy, guaiac and immunochemical fecal occult blood tests) in comparison to no screening in terms of quality-adjusted life-years gained. Psychometric analysis confirmed that FACT-C had satisfactory reliability, construct validity and responsiveness in Chinese patients Patients with CRN reported worse physical HRQOL but better mental HRQOL and similar health preference score compared to the general population. Disease severity indicated by tumor stage at initial diagnosis was the most significant determinant of HRQOL of CRN patients. Rectal cancer also significantly associated with a decrease in physical HRQOL and health preference scores. Markov modelling showed that immunochemical fecal occult blood (I-FOBT) yearly was the most effective and two-yearly was the most cost-effective screening strategy compared to no screening.

Full text
Abstract:
Background: One of the common complications of stroke is dysphagia. Dysphagia can be a disabling problem with negative psycho-social consequences. The effect of dysphagia on quality-of-life is not well understood among the stroke survivors. The Chinese version of Swallow Quality-of-Life Questionnaire can be a reliable instrument to provide a multidimensional evaluation on the impact of post-stroke dysphagia in the population of Hong Kong Chinese older adults. Objective: To investigate factors associated with the swallowing-related quality-of-life in Hong Kong Chinese older adults with the history of stroke during the post-acute phase, using a disease-specific quality-of-life questionnaire (CSWAL-QOL). Method: This was a cross-sectional study of 92 stroke survivors, aged over 55. They were recruited from the inpatient wards and out-patient clinics. They were assessed for any dysphagia and its severity by the bedside swallow assessment. The Mini-Mental State Examination and the Chinese version of Swallow Quality-of-Life Questionnaire were used for cognitive and quality-of-life assessment respectively. Results: The test-retest reliability of the test was moderately correlated (Spearman’s rho 0.62).Participants on modified diet/fluid, on tube-feeding, older age and post-stroke for 1-2 years were observed to have lower CSWAL-QOL score across scales. Conclusion: The effect of ageing appeared to be a factor affecting swallowing-related QOL in stroke survivors, with better QOL in younger participants(age ranged from 55 to 69) and similar QOL in old (age ranged from 70 to 85) and very old (age above 85)participants. No gradual change of QOL was found as post-stroke duration increases. The oral feeding mode and normal food and fluid consistency resulted a better QOL in stroke survivors.

Pfeifer, Lexie Y. "Division of Labor and Marital Quality in China." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2011. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/3055.

Full text
Abstract:
Research done in the United States has linked household division of labor to marital quality. Research shows that satisfaction with division of labor is associated with greater marital happiness. There is minimal research in other countries on the relationship between division of labor and marital quality. China, with a history of gender inequality and emerging women's rights, makes an ideal setting for examining the relationship between division of labor and marital quality. In addition to measuring the influence of division of labor and satisfaction with division of labor on marital satisfaction, this study includes a scale on childcare related tasks. The data used in this study were collected between 1995 and 2001, from 446 couples, in Beijing and Hangzhou, China. Structural equation modeling (SEM) was used for dyadic analysis. Results show that traditional division of labor and wives' satisfaction with division of labor positively affect Chinese husbands' marital satisfaction. Contrary to US research, results do not show a statistically significant effect between division of labor and Chinese wives' marital satisfaction. Results also show that higher levels of wives' responsibility for childcare predicts lower levels of marital satisfaction for husbands. Implications for culturally sensitive counseling are discussed.

Lin, Qiaoyuan. "Essays on rising income inequality and quality of life in contemporary China." Thesis, Middlesex University, 2014. http://eprints.mdx.ac.uk/14654/.

Full text
Abstract:
The primary contribution of the thesis is to propose the idea of collaboration from self efforts and social efforts to promote well-being in the research area of income inequality. The literature merely concerns the effect of income inequality on well-being based on social efforts which reflect on the measurement of income inequality according to social comparison. The thesis argues that this unilateral examination is unable to achieve coherence and unity between theory and empirical structure with respect to individual well-being and its corresponding statistical evidence is likely biased. Hence, the thesis introduces the new two-effort framework which enables a comprehensive and fair evaluation of social efforts such as government assistance and action on the issue of inequality. Through the application of such an idea into the analysis of China’s income inequality, the thesis has the following unprejudiced conclusions. China’s economy has retained strong growth over the past decades. Yet, the road to relieve the parallel outcome of rising income inequality from the robust growth is not optimistic. There is appreciable government policy on living standards in the short run but unfortunately, sustainable government intervention is scarce. This claim is drawn from three investigations of inequality by: i) examining the returns on social efforts and self efforts with respect to income inequality on living standards; ii) the influence of economic opportunity and security on individual income inequality; and iii), a case study of social efforts, government policy, particularly focusing on residential electricity pricing on household life burden.

Full text
Abstract:
Nowadays, the mobility and globalization of firms make it possible for people to choose their favorite working cities worldwide. Thus beyond employment and income, more and more attention has been paid to the comparison of urban quality of life (UQOL). As housing cost usually consists of the largest share of household budget which is thought as a “ticket” to live in a city, housing prices surely have great impact on the relative value of income and UQOL when one makes a relocation decision. With increasing inter-urban migration in China, the inter-urban real estate development becomes popular. In order to plant right crop for right land, the inter-urban differences on the combination of housing prices, income and UQOL should be well studied. In addition, it is found that cities with high UQOL grow faster because they can attract more talents to work in (Glaeser 2001). But with more and more immigration taken place in high amenity cities, housing prices may rise up faster than workers’ wages. When the advantage of UQOL is offset by the increased housing cost, it would reach a dynamic equilibrium which lets immigration terminate or slow down. Even worse, if housing prices rise higher and higher, talents would have to move out. Therefore, it is noticeable to the urban governments that the pattern of inter-urban competitiveness changes dramatically from the traditional solely economic-driven mode to the sustainable attractiveness by the bundles of housing prices, income and UQOL. This research aims at revealing the quantitative relationship among housing prices, income and UQOL which may give inspiration to city dwellers, developers and governments. Firstly following the compensation theory, a customized equilibrium model is developed to calculate the quantitative value of UQOL. Then a new classification method is proposed to Chinese cities based on their bundles of housing prices, income and UQOL. There are 3-high cities, 2-high (2-high-price&income, 2-high-price&UQOL, 2-high-income&UQOL) cities, 1-high (1-high-price, 1-high-income and 1-high-UQOL) cities and 3-low cities. This classification gives a new vision for city dwellers, developers and governments to recognize the substantive differences among cities which are helpful for decision making, strategy deployment and policy making. Rural labor is suggested to choose 1-high-income cities as early as better. College graduates are advised to enter 2-high-income&UQOL cities as soon as possible. The rich and famous group is recommended to enter 3-high cities to enjoy the most mature service. Inter-urban developers need to take different development strategies in different kinds of cities: develop products at popular locations in 3-high cities, create local good reputation with high-quality housing in cities with high housing prices and enter cities with high UQOL as quickly as possible. For urban governments, it’s important to keep improving UQOL in the course of the economic development. Also, they are advised to control the excessive growth of housing prices especially in 3-high cities.

Abstract:
Objective: To investigate the denture care practices, denture-related problems, and denture-related quality of life of elderly denture wearers in Hong Kong. Method: The study population was elders aged 60 or above, living in the community, had self-care ability, and no serious systemic diseases. Elders attending elderly social centres in different districts in Hong Kong were recruited and face-to-face interviews were conducted by three trained interviewers using a pilot-tested structured questionnaire. Result: 216 elders (45 men and 171 women) with a mean age of 77.2±7.6 years were interviewed in the survey. Most (54%) of them had worn denture for more than 10 years, and most elders were satisfied with the denture they were wearing. The vast majority (92%) wore denture to improve mastication; and among them, 71% thought their denture was of great help. Over 85% wore their denture for a whole day but removed it before sleep. Only 13% had used denture adhesive and nearly half (45%) of these elders found it not helpful. They usually used a toothbrush (70%) and toothpaste (58%) to clean their denture. Proportionally more female than male denture wearers cleaned their denture more than twice daily (50% vs. 24%, p<0.001). Half of the elders also used denture cleansing agent. Poor denture stability and compromised chewing ability were the two most common problems (around 55%) which affected these elders. However, most of them either did not tackle the problem or just changed their diet. Two thirds or more (66-82%) of the elderly reported no negative denture-related impacts on their quality of life. Conclusion: Most of the community-dwelling elderly denture wearers in Hong Kong are satisfied with their denture and their quality of life is seldom negatively affected by their denture. Their dental care practices are satisfactory but they should seek professional care when denture problems arise.
