Abstract:
Abstract Quality of life is an issue taken into account increasingly more often as one of the main elements of the evaluation and in comparisons between countries, regions and communes (local governments). The aim of this article is to show the relationship between quality of life and quality of living in rural communities at varying levels of socio-economic development. The analysis of both aspects yields the opportunity to observe the relationship between objective resources of the local community as well as the level of their socio-economic condition and level of satisfaction of the inhabitants, the latter of which results from, inter alia, their ability to meet specific needs within the local environment. The presented analysis leads to several main conclusions. The first is that the rural residents who participated in the study were characterized by a relatively high satisfaction with their own lives. The main source of their life satisfaction was the family sphere. The greatest source of dissatisfaction was their financial situation. The second conclusion comes from the analysis of their subjective assessment of their quality of living in terms of the local commune. The examined residents overall positively assessed the conditions of living in their community. They were content, first and foremost, with the natural environment and security. The lowest level of satisfaction with living in the commune was associated with such aspects as technical infrastructure, transport links, activities of NGOs and political parties, and the lack of possibilities to exert influence on what is happening in the commune. However, it is difficult to specify general correlations that would clarify the relationship between quality of life and quality of living in rural communities. The regression analysis confirmed the weak link between these phenomena. The final conclusion confirms the thesis of the high heterogeneity and diversity of rural communes in Poland, even within a socially, culturally and economically coherent area of a voivodeship (province).

Abstract:
The poor machinability of titanium alloys results in the serious wear of the rake face of a ball-end milling tool. Previous studies indicated that the mesoscopic geometric characteristics of the tool can effectively improve the wear resistance. Therefore, in this thesis, a milling force model and a milling temperature model of a ball-end milling tool were established to verify the effect of the blunt and negative chamfer tool edges. Setting up a test platform for milling titanium alloy, the influence of mesoscopic geometric characteristic parameters on cutting performance of the ball-end milling tool was analyzed. In addition, based on the support vector regression and genetic algorithm, the optimal mesoscopic geometric characteristic parameters were obtained, which were under the four evaluation indices, such as mechanical–thermal characteristics, tool wear, and surface quality of the workpiece. It was verified experimentally that the tool life of the optimized micro-textured tools with the blunt and chamfer tool edges were improved by 33% and 25%, respectively, and the surface roughness was reduced by 26% and 23%, respectively, which were compared to the non-optimized tools. This thesis provides a reference for improving the processing efficiency and the quality of titanium alloys.

Abstract:
Healthy urban river ecosystem is the important symbol of the sustaining development of a city. This thesis discussed the issues of the ecosystem health situation of Panlong River, an urban river in Kunming city. This can provide the reference and scientific strategy for the government to renovate the urban river comprehensively. Using the comprehensive index evaluation method, we selected some indicators to characterize the main features and functions of urban river ecosystem to establish a comprehensive index system for evaluating urban river ecosystem health. These indicators included six aspects: water quality indicators, aquatic life indicators, hydrology indicators, river channel indicators, riparian zone indicators and social indicators. Total of them are 20 indicators. And the evaluation criteria was ascertained. Analytic hierarchy process (AHP) method was used to determine the weight of the indicators and the comprehensive assessment model was also built. Pilot study results indicate that the ecosystem of Panlong River in Kunming city is in the health status in 2011. The results showed that the comprehensive renovation of the Panlong River was very effective. Based on the ecosystem health assessment results of Panlong Rive and evaluation score of each indicator, we made certain the limiting factors that affect the urban river ecosystem health, which are vegetation of riparian zone, the water quality, aquatic habitat, the curve situation of the river channel, the form of bank protection, etc. And some suggestions were also provided for Panlong River ecological restoration.

Abstract:
Aim/Purpose: Understanding the educational needs of postgraduate research candidates (PGRs) is essential to facilitate development, support attainment, and maintain graduate quality. Background: The production and effective defence of the research thesis are the summative assessment tools used in postgraduate research education. Examiners’ reports provide a rich source of feedback and indicate the gap between the candidate’s level of performance and that expected for the award. This provides a lens through which to view the unmet training needs of PGR cohorts. Methodology: Following a review of all examiner reports for PGR assessments held over a 12 month period, we explored the quantitative and qualitative dimension data in context in order to identify common training needs for our PGR students. Utilising this theoretical framework and standard thematic analysis, we identified recurring themes and were able to determine key areas for future focus. Contribution: This study utilises independent comment from postgraduate research candidate thesis and oral examination assessment to identify unmet core research training needs. Findings: We recognised seven key areas identified by the examiners for improvement: i) quality of scientific writing, ii) general presentation of thesis, iii) statistics /data analysis, iv) understanding / critical appraisal, v) experimental design, vi) English language and vii) supervision. Academic literacy and numeracy stood out as key areas for future training focus. The results highlight areas for future focus in educational provision and targeted training for PGRs undertaking biomedical and life sciences research within our faculty. Recommendations for Practitioners: Evaluation of postgraduate research programmes should include feedback from a variety of sources and not rely solely on employability and completion rates as measures of success. The examination committees are an important source of feedback on the individual and the programme with regard to attainment of core research skills. Recommendation for Researchers: Regular and wide reaching evaluation of postgraduate research programmes and support available is required to ensure the sector can meet the changing needs of our PGR cohorts. Impact on Society: Doctoral graduates are entering increasingly diverse employment fields. Ensuring the quality of graduates and supporting their journey through candidature ensures the greatest value for society once in the work place. Future Research: This study highlights unmet training needs of PGRs as identified by an inde-pendent expert. The impact of engagement with training and the importance of prior experience are not explored in this study, nor is the student perspective on the process. These will reveal additional dimensions to the evaluation process.

Abstract:
IntroductionLong-term and late effects of cancer treatments can cause functional limitations and reduce quality of life. Cancer rehabilitation services, which can comprise physical exercise, psychological support and educational interventions depending on the individual’s needs, have been found to have a positive effect on health-related quality of life worldwide. However, accessibility or the lack of awareness on available help can act as barriers and influence the uptake of services, resulting in people having unmet rehabilitation needs. In Wales, UK, 41% of people, who have had health and social care needs resulting from cancer and its treatments, reported that they did not receive care when needed. The reason for this lack of support has not yet been fully investigated. The aim of this study is to investigate the conditions in which cancer rehabilitation services work and their underpinning mechanisms in South Wales, UK, specifically addressing barriers, facilitators and costs. Methods and analysisRealist evaluation, which explains for whom a service works in what circumstances and how through context-mechanism-outcome pattern conjunctions, will be used in three phases to investigate the conditions in which cancer rehabilitation services work and their underpinning mechanisms. Phase 1 will be secondary analysis of a cancer rehabilitation database from a local Health Board to give context to who are accessing rehabilitation. Phase 2 will be thematic analysis of face-to-face, semistructured rehabilitation participant (n=20) and healthcare professional (n=20) interviews to explore the mechanisms of how cancer rehabilitation works. Phase 3 will be two case studies and cost-consequences analysis of cancer rehabilitation services.Ethics and disseminationThis study received favourable ethical opinion from London South-East Research Ethics Committee (17/LO/2123) in December 2017. This project is part of the author’s PhD thesis and it is expected that the findings will be disseminated in academic journals and at local and international conferences.

Abstract:
Today, with the rapid development of urbanization, the ecological and environmental problems of the city have become increasingly serious and have become the focus of the world. The most important issue facing the majority of ecological workers is how to apply the theory of ecology to solve today’s problems. The various environmental problems faced in urban life and the sustainable development of the city’s ecological civilization. How ecological planning is used to coordinate the relationship between people and the natural environment and natural resources is increasingly gaining attention and expanding the range and scope of its applications. However, as an ecological suitability analysis based on ecological planning, many analytical methods and systems are still being explored and developed due to the geographical complexity and factor diversity involved. In recent years, with the rapid development of computer hardware and software technology, pattern recognition has received more and more attention, pattern recognition and image processing technology has become more and more perfect, and has been successfully applied in more and more fields. This thesis begins to focus on the urban ecological suitability content based on pattern recognition technology and image processing. The main contents of this thesis include: introducing the background of urban ecological suitability and the status quo of ecological suitability analysis and existing research methods. According to the structure of the urban ecosystem and the national standards for the construction of ecological systems and ecological cities, an indicator system for ecological suitability evaluation is established. A pattern recognition system and common pattern recognition and image processing methods are introduced. Based on some common evaluation methods and models, the pattern recognition technology theory and image processing technology are introduced into the urban ecological suitability analysis. Based on the image system theory and vector projection principle, the ecological suitability analysis is established. Associated projection model. The model considers the evaluation sample and the quality standards at each level as vectors, and respectively projects the same vector ideal. Based on establishing the ecological suitability evaluation index system and standards, the ecological suitability was evaluated by using the model.

Abstract:
Leaf lettuce is a major and widely cultivated vegetable crop. Leaf lettuce is preferred for wrapping food, like rice or meat, and is much more popular than head lettuce in Korea. Color change and water loss condition are most important factor for buying decision as external quality. This paper studied color change during storage at 20 and 4 °C, 60% RH. The color analysis of adaxial surface of leaf lettuce during shelf-life storage condition showed that Hunter L and a value increased slightly after 5 days of harvest, while delta-Eab started increasing after 3 days of postharvest. Chlorophyll content decreased by half during the first 5 days after harvest. These color changes, however, could not explain the changes in leaf chlorophyll content while the color intensity of G (green) component in RGB analysis showed a close relationship with leaf chlorophyll content changes. Visual quality score showed that lettuce may kept its marketability up to 5 days after harvest. But, in refrigerator (4°C, 60% RH, cold chain system) storage condition. Leaf color is about three times longer than shelf-life. Theses results of each evaluation methods consistently demonstrated that leaf lettuce may keep its marketability up to 5 days in a distribution market without color quality damage.

Abstract:
Nano medicine is a revolutionizing field that can benefit both diagnosis and treatment and contribute to a better quality of life. Despite the expected huge benefits, the potential risks on human health are significant as well. This thesis aims to defense a perspective that in case of nascent technologies, where the data are still emerging and scientific uncertainty prevails, risk governance should sustain the process of scientific knowledge by developing guidelines, codes of conduct and public information and provide a minimum level of safety acceptable to protect human health. Although Nano medicine is at an early stage of development some cautious measures should be taken that will provide regulatory mechanisms able to respond to the challenges posed by Nano medicine, establish a minimum level of safety but will also allow the further promotion of scientific knowledge. This multidisciplinary approach can contribute in adopting regulatory choices and tools that will help manage the risks, protect human health and promote scientific knowledge. As the technologies are designed based on a clear understanding of a particular disease, disease specific oriented focus is required for the development of novel pharmaceuticals. In addition, it will be important to establish a case-by-case approach to clinical and regulatory evaluation of each Nano pharmaceutical. High priority should be given to enhancing communication and exchange of information among academia, industry and regulatory agencies encompassing all facets of this multidisciplinary approach.

Abstract:
The health-related quality of life (HRQL) of people with dementia has received growing attention in formulating decisions about the provision and financing of health and social care. There is a need for measurement perspectives to determine whether HRQL assessment has captured what is important to the target population, to generate a coherent body of evidence to guide clinical and policy decisions. The thesis first investigates if HRQL in dementia is meaningfully interpreted as a general phenomenon in which the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. Overall total scores on DEMQOL and DEMQOL-Proxy were more sensitive to a general theme of individual differences in HRQL than subscale scores from multiple themes. Next, based on this measurement perspective, inconsistencies in self- and informant report behaviour were examined between geographical region, gender, and dementia severity. Items that demonstrated desirable measurement properties at this stage were selected for the short-form versions, DEMQOL-SF and DEMQOL-Proxy-SF, which included the preferencebased items in DEMQOL-U and DEMQOL-Proxy-U. These provided the basis for a set of analyses exploring whether changes in subjective HRQL are influenced by response shift in meaning, priorities, or expectations over time. The thesis reports the findings that differences that emerge over repeated HRQL assessments could not be attributed to re-conceptualisation, re-prioritisation, or recalibration of internal standards. Furthermore, differences in raw total scores over time were sensitive to HRQL improvement or deterioration. As such gains or losses in utility values from DEMQOL-U and DEMQOL-Proxy-U items would be consistent with item responses that reflect longitudinal changes in HRQL. Taken together, the thesis suggests that the DEMQOL measurement system has tenable foundations for the clinical and economic evaluation of HRQL changes in dementia treatment interventions across clinical and social care settings.

Abstract:
The title of the research is Sustainability Performance Evaluation Management Systems Model for Individual Organizations and Supply Chains. This research has achieved its aim to develop and demonstrate the practical implementation of a simple and objective sustainability performance evaluation management system model for individual organizations and supply chains. It has resulted in the recognition that a new concept – Network of Interested Partners – underpins the achievement of sustainability. The term acknowledges the interdependence and reflects the essential cooperation that must be achieved between business organisations, their commercially related entities and the local community if progress towards sustainability is to be achieved. It therefore encompasses and extends the concept of a supply chain as currently used. Sustainable Development is defined by the World Commission on Environment and Development as development, which meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future societies to meet their own needs. Organizations, as part of human activities, also have to be sustainable. The sustainability of organizations is directly linked to the continual improvement of business performance. Many organizations have found a way to improve performance through the establishment of management systems. International Organization for Standardization (ISO) standards are recognized worldwide as reliable and efficient tools for the implementation of management systems. However, they do not always result in the desired improvement in outcomes. Therefore, if the required improvement of business performance is to be achieved, improved methodologies for development and implementation of performance evaluation (PE) processes are necessary. These methodologies must take into consideration sustainability principles. They also have to be applicable to individual entities and supply chains, with or without management systems in place. Supply chains are important because it is being increasingly recognized that overall supply chain performance is a means of adding value and competitive advantage to all businesses. In the first part of the research a performance evaluation model or PE (version 1 model) was developed. This was used as criteria to compare and evaluate existing performance evaluation processes and outcomes of individual organisations and their respective supply chain within the Gladstone region, Australia. Questionnaires have also been used to identify and evaluate the needs of the interested parties in relation to the organizations’ and supply chains’ business performance and processes of performance evaluation. All the information provided in the first part of the research was used by the researcher to develop the Sustainability Performance Evaluation Management Systems model or SPEMS (version 2 model). This incorporates the concepts of Network of Interested Parties/Partners. In particular, one of the outcomes is recognition that organizations need to establish partnerships if effective supply chain performance improvement is to be achieved. Therefore the establishment of partnerships has become a key requirement for the implementation of SPEMS. The establishment of partnership among participants of a supply chain of Gladstone and implementation of the eight first steps of the SPEMS (version 2 model) in this supply chain was commenced successfully through workshops. The supply chain was formed by commercial organizations, government entities and interested parties from the community. SPEMS requires that partners all have the same level of ownership and authority in the decisions of the supply chain. Some new terms and their definitions have been created within the research to support the new SPEMS model. They include: Network of Interested Partners, sustainability for organizations, sustainability KPI and sustainability friendly organizations. All of the above are encompassed within the final SPEMS (version 3 model).

Abstract:
Sua reprodutibilidade, consistência interna e validade foram também demonstradas.<br>The assessment of quality of life has been increasingly used by health professionals to measure the consequences of disease on patients' lives and evaluate the results of treatments. The growing interest in clinical research protocols of non-arthritic hip diseases has found many difficulties in dealing with the objective assessment of its results, especially in observational studies of new therapeutic interventions such as arthroscopy. The Nonarthritic Hip Score (NAHS) is a clinical assessment tool, originally developed in English to evaluate the function of the hip joint in young and physically active patients. The aim of this study was to translate this instrument into Portuguese, adapt it to the Brazilian culture and validate it, in order to evaluate quality of life of Brazilian patients with hip pain without osteoarthritis. The methodology used is suggested by Guillemin et al., (1993) and reviewed by Beaton et al., (2000), who proposed a set of standardized instructions for cultural adaptation of instruments for quality of life, including five steps: translation, back translation, review by committee, pre-test and test with a reassessment of the weights of scores, if relevant. The consensus version was administered to 30 individuals. Questions about sports and household chores were modified to better adapt to the Brazilian culture. The Brazilian version of Nonarthritic Hip Score (NAHS-Brasil) was answered by 64 patients with hip pain to evaluate the measurement properties of the instrument: reproducibility, internal consistency and validity. Reproducibility was 0.9, showing a strong correlation; the internal consistency showed a correlation between 0,8 and 0,9, considered good and excellent; the validity was considered good and excellent respectively; the correlation between NAHS-Brasil and WOMAC was 0,9, and the correlation between NAHS-Brasil and Lequesne Algofunctional Index was 0.79. The Nonarthritic Hip Score was translated into Portuguese and adapted to Brazilian culture, according to the instruction set of standardized instruments for cultural adaptation of quality of life. Its reliability, internal consistency and validity have also been demonstrated.

Doga, Georgia. "Evaluation of quality of life in Greek colorectal cancer survivors." Thesis, Middlesex University, 2008. http://eprints.mdx.ac.uk/6537/.

Full text
Abstract:
Survival from cancer is becoming a reality for more people in the world each year. Survival rate from colorectal cancer disease is approximately 80% one year after diagnosis, but falls to 62% at 5 years from diagnosis. Quality of life research in colorectal cancer to date has focused on investigating patients' experience during the diagnostic or treatment phase while the experiences of those who have survived this cancer have been ignored. Based on the concept of Health-Related Quality of Life (HRQOL) this study was focused on understanding and assessing the impact of colorectal cancer disease and its treatment on Greek patients' HRQOL over time. Also, this study sought to identify multiple factors (related either to patient or disease characteristics) that contributed to patients' HRQOL in both specific and general domains. Age, gender, stage at diagnosis, time elapse since diagnosis, income, education, colostomy appliance, disease recurrence, depression and communication between couples were examined for their effect on HRQOL over time. 145 Greek outpatients (male 87, female 58) completed the Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-Colorectal (FACT-C) Quality of Life Instrument and the Mental Component of the Short Form 36 Health Survey questionnaire measuring both generic and disease-specific HRQOL, as well as the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D) to detect depressive symptoms, and the Enriching & Nurturing Relationship Issues, Communication & Happiness (ENRICH) scale to assess communication between couples, at an interval of either one year or more than 5 years since diagnosis. Statistical significance was set at (p<0.05) and data were analysed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS). The findings suggest that patients who survived colorectal cancer experienced an overall high quality of life independent of the stage of disease at diagnosis or time since diagnosis. Among those factors that had a negative effect on patients overall HRQOL over time depression was the most prevalent. Stoma patients experienced an overall lower HRQOL than non-stoma patients. Most domains of HRQOL assessment such as physical, emotional and role functioning of stoma patients were negatively affected, but these did not reach statistical significance. Notably, stoma patients in this sample showed significantly more dissatisfaction with body image than patients without a stoma – a finding that was more prevalent in women. This may suggest that stoma formation negatively affects sexual function and body image. Finally, patients with lower incomes and a recurrence or metastatic disease also experienced a poorer HRQOL. It is recommended that a practice-based strategy is developed in Greece to assess the HRQOL and psychosocial functioning of these patients as well as the recommendation that in the preoperative stage, after surgery and in the rehabilitation phase for stoma patients to be assessed and supported by a specialist Stoma Care nurse. Other suggestions for future research are also proposed.

Abstract:
AbstractIn this chapter, the attention is paid to two fields which are linked with family lifestyle. The first one concerns socioeconomic situations in a family and shows that the economic side of family functioning is actually very essential these days. The importance of family economic situation is affirmed also in the results of our international survey. We asked what was the main family income, experience with unemployment and whether our respondents had possibility to save some money. Furthermore, we were interested in expenditure items and in evaluation of an overall standard of living by respondents. The Germans and then Czechs evaluated it as the best, the worst was found in families in Latvia. The second part monitors life satisfaction as a subjective feeling of well-being and is understood as a part of quality of life. To the question “How do you imagine a satisfied family?”, the most frequent response was—harmonic coexistence without conflicts, well-being, good health of all family members and material security. For the question “What do you lack to your satisfaction?” respondents stated—financial security and lack of free time for the family. However, there were specific differences among individual surveyed countries.

Full text
Abstract:
Union Pacific Railroad has prioritized optimizing the life span of ballast material utilized across the system. A multi-faceted approach is presented which addresses (1) obtaining hard, durable ballast; (2) ensuring that the ballast delivered satisfies the specification; and (3) evaluating the resistance of ballast to breakdown during transportation. The initial focus included a quality management system to verify that properly graded and clean ballast is loaded into the railcars. Periodic testing and unannounced quarry visits are in place for each ballast source. Petrographic testing was completed for each source to identify potential problematic mineralogical issues. The second focus is ballast degradation during transport. The study included three railcars shipped to a central location where a gradation analysis on each railcar was completed in its entirety. Various sampling methods were utilized at the ballast sources during loading of the railcar and are compared to the unloaded results. The variability of gradation results from different sampling methods was a significant outcome of the study. The test results indicate that the half inch particle size increased during transport. The outcomes of these series of studies are constant evaluation of ballast suppliers is warranted, obtaining representative samples of ballast for gradation quality control is difficult, and transportation results in a minor increase of the half-inch particle size.

Abstract:
The mechanical vibrations’ therapy is widely used as a non-conservative and safe physical method for patients diagnosed with osteoporosis, postmenopausal women and sportsmen training, also during athletes’ recovery and rehabilitation phase. This paper has the main goal in assessing the benefic effects of whole-body-vibration (WBV) therapy applied to professional sportsmen as a complementary alternative of training that can improve their sport performance and quality life. The experiment applied on a group of ten volunteers’ athletes from our university, with the ages between of 19 to 29 years and appropriate weight and height, which signed a statement on by self-agreement to participate in this study. The WBV trial performed via a proper dynamic vibration installation during of two months, where the subjects were sitting in a bed with upper limbs on their thighs and inferior limbs extended to provide support for the spine in a fixed support. The installation comprised a vibration bed with direct control of vibration signal and an electronic analyzing system for acquisition and interpretation of vibration data, which allowing an automat control of rotation frequency, alarm and safety system, and visualization on-line the measurement process. The electric motor of vibrating bed can generate predictable vibration values on three axes that used two types of tri-axial vibration sensors, one accelerometer fixed on bed and the second that is an implant accelerometer on the anterior face of the thigh of evaluated subject. Each mechanical vibration training session has performed with a frequency of 45 Hz during of 16 minutes, consisted in eight series with 60 seconds, and one-minute breaks in between. The evaluation of data has made by assessing the values of subjects recorded at the initial stage and at final therapy, which supposed to control the objective parameters, as standing long jump, standing high jump and intensity of exercise performed during of physical efforts. The results of vibration trial stressed that the subjects had a significant increase of sport performances after vibration training at each parameter assessing, which means that WBV can be a viable alternative method used of sportsmen to improve their athletic performance and quality life.

Full text
Abstract:
Cooling, Heating and Power (CHP) systems are a form of distributed generation that uses internal combustion prime-power engines to generate electricity while recovering heat for other uses. CHP is a promising technology for increasing energy efficiency through the use of distributed electric and thermal energy recovery-delivery systems at or near end-user sites. Although this technology seems to be economically feasible, the evaluation and comparison of CHP systems cannot be restricted to economical considerations only. Standard economic analysis, such as life cycle economic analysis, does not take in consideration all the benefits that can be obtained from this technology. For this reason, several aspects to perform a non-conventional evaluation of CHP systems have to be considered. Among the aspects to be included in a non-conventional evaluation are: power reliability, power quality, environmental quality, energy-efficient buildings, fuel source flexibility, brand and marketing benefits, protection from electric rate hikes, and benefits from promoting energy management practices. Some benefits of these non-economical evaluations can be transferred into an economic evaluation but others give intangible potential to the technology. This paper focus on a non-conventional evaluation based on energy-efficient buildings, which is associated to energy conservation and improvement of the building energy performance rating for government energy programs like Energy Star and Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED). Results show that the use of CHP systems could improve the Energy Star Rating in more than 50 points. The Energy Star Rating is significant on the LEED Rating as a building can score up to 10 points of the 23 available in the Energy &amp; Atmosphere category on energy efficiency alone. As much as 8 points can be obtained in this category due to the Energy Star rating increment from the use of CHP systems. Clearly the use of CHP systems will help building owners to reach the benefits from these energy programs while improving the overall energy use and energy cost.

Full text
Abstract:
Supporting body weight and balance control are foundations of our ability to move and function independently. However, neurological disease, injury, and aging often threaten these prerequisites of functional independence, leading to a decrease in quality of life. In the United States alone, 7.5 million individuals have survived stroke, traumatic brain injury (TBI), or spinal cord injury (SCI), and over a million new patients are diagnosed every year [1–2]. To improve gait function in these patient populations, partial body weight-supported gait training is a widely-used rehabilitation therapy. In general, the therapeutic quality of partial body weight-supported gait training is directly proportional to the amount of time patients are able to tolerate an upright posture (either standing or walking). To achieve an upright posture, therapists must first attach a support system (e.g., gait belt, harness lift system, exoskeleton), then several therapists must assist the patient into a standing position. Depending on the patient’s level of impairment, several therapists may also be needed to support and assist the patient while standing and walking, then again to remove the support system at the end of therapy. Accordingly, multiple therapists are often needed to provide a small quantity of upright physical therapy time with standard support systems. Furthermore, use of standard support systems can be uncomfortable and fatiguing for the patient, further reducing their actual therapeutic treatment time [3].

In ASME 2018 Pressure Vessels and Piping Conference. American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/pvp2018-84081.

Full text
Abstract:
INCEFA-PLUS stands for INcreasing safety in nuclear power plants by Covering gaps in Environmental Fatigue Assessment. It is a five year project supported by the European Commission HORIZON2020 program that commenced in mid-2015 and in which sixteen organizations from across Europe participate. Specifically, the effects of mean strain/stress, hold time, strain amplitude and surface finish on fatigue life of austenitic stainless steels in light water reactor environments are being studied, these being issues of common interest to all participants. The project will develop proposals for improvements to methods for environmental fatigue assessment of nuclear plant components. Therefore, extensive testing capacity is being solicited in various laboratories across Europe in order to add to the existing amount of published data on environmentally assisted fatigue. Since there currently is no standard on environmental fatigue testing, it was imperative to come up with and agree upon a testing procedure within the consortium to minimize lab-to-lab variations in test results. This was done prior to the first phase of testing, but an update of the procedure was required after review of initial results, when additional potential lab-to-lab differences were identified. The current status of the so-called test protocol, and the key areas of difference found between different testing facilities, will be discussed. Due to the large test matrix within INCEFA-PLUS, distributed amongst various test laboratories, it has been necessary to develop a method to assign a data quality level to each test result, and a minimum data quality requirement for results that will be included in the project’s datasets used for analysis. Furthermore, the project has triggered international interest in facilitating mutual data access, and this requires data is gathered in a common database with data quality ratings applied. Ways to address the evaluation of data quality will be discussed. In a way, both activities, on a test protocol and on data review, jointly contribute to data quality by, respectively, ensuring a pre-test, common test procedure and a post-test, harmonized data evaluation. The large number of participants in the INCEFA-PLUS project presents a unique opportunity to gain consensus on light water reactor environment fatigue testing procedures and data quality assessment from experts working in a range of different organizations. The test protocol and data quality ratings developed within the INCEFA-PLUS project could be adopted by other organizations, or possibly used as the basis for future testing standards documents to harmonize approaches across the nuclear industry.

Abstract:
Monolithic ceramics are under consideration as structural components for hot stage sections of gas fired turbine engines. In addition to manufacturing quality control, other important aspects for this application include life prediction modeling and time between engine overhauls. One non-destructive evaluation (NDE) method that provides information about material condition involves an analysis of resonant vibrations. In previous work by this general approach, changes in modal parameters have been related to bulk defect mechanisms such as microcracking due to thermal shock damage. In this work resonant vibrations from monolithic ceramic specimens were excited by an instrumented impact hammer and detected by a non-contact acoustic microphone over frequencies up to 100kHz. Computer based analysis of vibration signatures from test specimens allowed extraction of modal frequencies and damping constants. Downward shifts in detected resonant frequencies and increases in internal friction or (specific) damping capacity measurements were obtained from SiC cylindrical rings, and these measurements were shown to relate to thermal shock severity. This NDE method not only provides measurable parameters that could be used as an accept-reject criteria for inline process inspection, it also provides a means for tracking the mechanical integrity of in-service engine components to support life prediction modeling.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract Carburized and hardened gears are generally ground to improve the quality of distorted tooth geometry caused by heat treatment. As long as the distortion is low and predictable, stock removal from teeth is small up to a maximum of 0.005 inch from each flank. This allows minimum tooth surface hardness reduction with no deterioration of these gears. Uncontrolled distortion, on the other hand, may result in an undue amount of stock removal with a significant loss of tooth surface hardness. Lower surface hardness reduces gear life due to tooth pitting. For heavily distorted gears, the pitting life may be reduced as much as 30% after grinding. For a realistic evaluation of the pitting life of ground, carburized gears with uncontrolled distortion, derating factors are established for a number of gear materials.

In ASME 2008 27th International Conference on Offshore Mechanics and Arctic Engineering. ASMEDC, 2008. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/omae2008-57834.

Full text
Abstract:
This paper presents the tests performed for the qualification of the level of accumulated plastic strain (APS) to be respected by manufacturing and installation of SAF 2507 steel tube umbilicals. The manufacturing and installation processes for steel tube umbilicals are carried out through repetitive cycles of coiling and uncoiling the tubes or umbilical during manufacturing. During installation the umbilical is also coiled and uncoiled in installation reels or vessel’s baskets (turn tables or carrousels) as well as straightened and bent under tension over sheaves or chutes. These operations impose tensile and compressive strains to tube, which means that the tube is submitted to work hardening and have its mechanical properties modified to a certain extent during its manufacturing and installation processes. Therefore, it becomes necessary to quantify the level of APS expected to occur during these processes and compare it to the maximum level of APS qualified for the tube material being used in order to ensure that the mechanical properties of the steel tube are maintained at a high quality level. The scope of this paper is to present the tensile and fatigue tests performed by Marine Production Systems do Brasil (Brazilian Oceaneering Factory) in strained and unstrained tubes and define a maximum acceptable level of APS. Both strain hardening and fatigue life influence effects are assessed. Based on the results of these tests, the maximum acceptable level of APS to be respected during the manufacturing and installation of umbilicals was defined and associated with this level, the S-N curve determined by the tests must be used for the umbilical service life fatigue analysis.

Abstract:
Subjective well-being (SWB) is an overall evaluation of the quality of a person’slife from his or her own perspective. One common method of assessing thisconstruct requires respondents to think about their life as a whole and to providea “global” evaluation that summarizes across life domains or affective experiencesover extended periods of time. The validity of these global measures has beenchallenged, however; and experiential measures, which ask respondents to reporton their momentary evaluative experiences many times over a constrained timeperiod, have been suggested as a more valid alternative. This paper addresses theempirical evidence for one important challenge to global measures: the possibilitythat temporarily salient information overwhelmingly influences global judgments, reducing their reliability and validity. This paper critiques prior evidence for thischallenge and presents new concerns about the assumed validity of the proposedalternative: experiential measures.

Abstract:
This Coastal and Hydraulics Engineering Technical Note (CHETN) describes a method for evaluating the received coverage from Automatic Identification System (AIS) shore sites and the availability of historic vessel position reports along the Ohio River. The network of AIS shoreside sites installed and operated by the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) and the US Coast Guard (USCG) receive information transmitted from vessels; however, reception of these transmissions is generally line-of-sight between the vessel and the AIS site antenna. Reception may also be affected by factors such as the quality of the transceiver installation aboard the vessel as well as the state of the equipment at the receiving site. Understanding how to define and quantify coverage gaps along the inland river system can inform research utilizing AIS data, provide information on the performance of the AIS network, and provide guidance for efforts to address identified coverage gaps

Abstract:
Background. Timely discharge of hospitalized patients can prevent patient harm, improve patient satisfaction and quality of life, and reduce costs. Numerous strategies have been tested to improve the efficiency and safety of patient recovery and discharge, but hospitals continue to face challenges. Purpose. This Technical Brief aimed to identify and synthesize current knowledge and emerging concepts regarding systematic strategies that hospitals and health systems can implement to reduce length of stay (LOS), with emphasis on medically complex or vulnerable patients at high risk for prolonged LOS due to clinical, social, or economic barriers to timely discharge. Methods. We conducted a structured search for published and unpublished studies and conducted interviews with Key Informants representing vulnerable patients, hospitals, health systems, and clinicians. The interviews provided guidance on our research protocol, search strategy, and analysis. Due to the large and diverse evidence base, we limited our evaluation to systematic reviews of interventions to decrease hospital LOS for patients at potentially higher risk for delayed discharge; primary research studies were not included, and searches were restricted to reviews published since 2010. We cataloged the characteristics of relevant interventions and assessed evidence of their effectiveness. Findings. Our searches yielded 4,364 potential studies. After screening, we included 19 systematic reviews reported in 20 articles. The reviews described eight strategies for reducing LOS: discharge planning; geriatric assessment or consultation; medication management; clinical pathways; inter- or multidisciplinary care; case management; hospitalist services; and telehealth. All reviews included adult patients, and two reviews also included children. Interventions were frequently designed for older (often frail) patients or patients with chronic illness. One review included pregnant women at high risk for premature delivery. No reviews focused on factors linking patient vulnerability with social determinants of health. The reviews reported few details about hospital setting, context, or resources associated with the interventions studied. Evidence for effectiveness of interventions was generally not robust and often inconsistent—for example, we identified six reviews of discharge planning; three found no effect on LOS, two found LOS decreased, and one reported an increase. Many reviews also reported patient readmission rates and mortality but with similarly inconsistent results. Conclusions. A broad range of strategies have been employed to reduce LOS, but rigorous systematic reviews have not consistently demonstrated effectiveness within medically complex, high-risk, and vulnerable populations. Health system leaders, researchers, and policymakers must collaborate to address these needs.

Abstract:
This report presents findings on the evaluation of foundation layers under concrete pavements in the state of Illinois. It also provides recommendations and scenarios where unbound granular layers can be safely used under concrete pavements as economical and well-performing subbase layers. The current practice and mechanistic design methods for constructing concrete pavements in Illinois was first evaluated, including historical studies that led to the current design procedures and policies. The performance of concrete pavements with unbound granular layers in Illinois were then evaluated, and several case studies of well-performing concrete pavements with granular subbases, high traffic levels, and low distress levels and severity were realized. Next, the practices of surrounding states were evaluated, and several Midwest states, i.e., Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, and Michigan, were found to regularly use unbound granular layers under concrete pavements with no issues. A literature review on the most recent requirements and recommendations for designing granular subbases under concrete pavements was then presented. It is concluded that subbase layers under concrete pavements are mainly used to provide uniform support and prevent pumping. Based on the case study evaluations and literature, a stable, drainable, and durable daylighted granular subbase design is recommended for traffic factors up to 10.0. Stability is ensured by limiting the ratio of gravel-to-sand fractions in the aggregate mix between 1.3 and 1.9. Drainability requirements can be met by limiting the percentage of fines passing the No. 200 sieve (0.075 mm) to 4% and by checking the quality of drainage is at least fair based on the time required to drain 50% of the water. Lastly, a geotextile fabric is recommended for use below the granular subbase for separation to ensure drainability throughout design life.
