Abstract:
Recent studies showed that suicide among police officers are prevalent in certain countries . Burnout and subjective health complaints are considered as risks that are consistent with high levels of suicide ideation. Police officers are exposed to life-threatening traumatic experiences, such as physical assault or witnessing disturbing images of death. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between job demands- resources, authentic leadership, work engagement and burnout within the Namibian Police Force. A cross - sectional survey design was used collecting data about police officers in the Erongo, Oshana and Khomas regions (n=369). Data was analysed using SPPS (version, 24) and Pearson product correlations. Results indicated that when police officers experience high a workload and leaders who do not engage in the moral and ethical behaviour, they will experience higher levels of exhaustion. Factors like organisational support and resources also seemed to impact on work engagement. To reduce exhaustion and increase engagement, it is vital that the police force assesses person-job fit, implement stress management and wellness programmes to help employees cope better with work demands. Moral and ethical behaviour can be enhanced through leadership training/development. Improving on colleague relations (team building) and through mentorship programmes employees would have access to social support at work, buffering a high workload.

Abstract:
In Namibia, there is a problem of integration between eHealth and eGovernance. This problem has resulted in the fragmentation, decentralisation, and duplication of processes and patient data. These challenges lead to bigger health problems because diagnoses are duplicated, and rates of mortality increase. From the governance angle, service delivery deteriorates owing to lack of transparency and so accurate evaluation of service quality. This study used an interpretivist perspective to identify the factors that can influence the integration between eHealth and eGovernance in the Namibian environment. A total of 66 papers from the years 2011-2020 were deemed relevant to the study and categorized according to topic and year of publication. Based on the factors identified in the data analysis, the challenges identified were conceptualized in terms of how to address the problem of integration between eHealth and eGovernance in a developing country like Namibia.

Abstract:
The shortage of local electricity generation capacity coupled with increasing reliance on South Africa, from which it imports about forty-eight (48%) percent of its electricity, and another five (5%) percent from Zambia, Zimbabwe and other short term energy markets constitute the major shortcomings of electricity industry in Namibia. Therefore, price stability and volatility indices of electricity can directly impact on the developmental imperatives of any nation. This is so because the quality, quantity and pricing of electricity available to the citizenry have become the common denominators for measuring the standards of living of any commune, like Namibia. Extensive literature searchand review, and about 127 yielded questionnaires out of the 300 administered questionnaires; were used to gather data for the study. The yielded survey data were subsequently subjected to statistical analyses using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS version 11.5) to develop a sigmoid plot for predicting the future electricity pricing model for Namibia employing first order differential equations. The results show that the generalisedlogistic equation model for the future pricing of electricity consumed in Namibia, increased by about 13.52% per year. Upon substituting the available 1995 electricity pricing data into the logistic equation model, it was possible to predict the future electricity price for 2010, with about 1.8% error. It can be seen that the developed logistic model fit is only viable for about fifteen (15) years. It is suggested that, better estimates can be obtained if the median electricity price for either 2002 or 2003 is used as the initial electricity price, to obtain more credible electricity prices with longertime ranges, for Namibia.

Abstract:
A lot has been published on burnout within the service industry; however, an in-depth investigation of job stressors and burnout in both the safety and health sectors of Namibia has been left unexplored. This study investigated the relationship between job demands-resources and burnout. Burnout occurs when an individual is exposed to emotional and interpersonal stressors on the job (exhaustion, cynicism and professional efficacy). Job demands require continuous efforts and job resources are aspects of the organisation that are helpful in achieving goals, reducing costs of job demands and stimulating growth and development. The sample is made up of police officers (n=482) and nursing staff (n=672) from various regions within Namibia (n=1154). Results were analysed using the SPSS (version 24) to assess the relationships between the variables. The results revealed exhaustion had a relationship with the workload, resources and organisational support. Lower levels of workload, accompanied with higher levels of resources and organisation support would reduce exhaustion. The workload can be managed by making using of timemanagement training, improving delegation, and by ensuring the employees have mentors and supervisory support. Training opportunities improve work resources and reduce work stress. Healthy coping strategies, like being active and meditation help to alleviate stress (exhaustion). Having healthy work relations enhances organisational support and improves coping mechanisms of employees.

Abstract:
INTRODUCTION: Māori perspectives should be genuinely represented and integrated into social work education to ensure Māori and non-Māori social work students alike are prepared for working effectively in Aotearoa New Zealand. In field education, Māori students may have particular needs and expectations that should be considered by academic staff and placement host organisations. Consequently, the placement experience for Māori students should reflect these needs and expectations.METHOD: As part of a wider research project which aimed to advance the quality of social work placements for Māori and Pasifika students, a hui was undertaken with a roopu (Māori branch) of the Aotearoa New Zealand Association of Social Work (ANZASW) in late 2014. This article focuses on their views of what constitutes a quality placement for Māori social work students. The project explored two key areas: what does a quality placement look like for Māori social work students and what can tertiary institutions do to better support Māori students to have a quality placement?FINDINGS AND CONCLUSIONS: Participants emphasised the usefulness of placement preparedness, clear expectations and open communication prior to, and during, placement. The placement should also be culturally safe and adequately challenge the student. Tertiary providers should support the student’s placement by being in regular face-to-face contact; preparing the student for the placement environment; supporting external cultural supervision; and by critically reviewing their curriculum.

Sustainable Agriculture Research 6, no. 4 (August 3, 2017): 31. http://dx.doi.org/10.5539/sar.v6n4p31.

Full text
Abstract:
The objective of this study was to compare the proximate and mineral compositions of Moringa oleifera and Moringa ovalifolia grown together at Neudamm Experimental Farm in central Namibia. Moringa oleifera is well known for its rich nutritional value and was compared to the nutritional value of M. ovalifolia, a native plant of Namibia and Angola, which is less studied. Namibia being a semi-arid country, many plants in the rangelands are low in nutrients essential for livestock nutrition. This creates the necessity for planting fodder trees like moringa that withstand the harsh climatic conditions and retain their nutritional quality for the production of sustained livestock supplement. Leaves of both Moringa species were harvested with twiglets, shade dried fortnightly and taken to the laboratory where they were ground and passed through 1 mm sieve for proximate and mineral analysis. Statistically, M. oleifera nutrient values were significantly different (P < 0.05) in moisture, ash, crude protein (CP) and crude fiber (CF) from M. ovalifolia, but had no differences in fat, acid detergent fiber (ADF) and neutral detergent fiber (NDF). Also, M. oleifera was significantly different (P < 0.05) from M. ovalifolia in potassium (K), magnesium (Mg), copper (Cu) and zinc (Zn), but there were no differences in calcium (Ca), sodium (Na), phosphorus (P), iron (Fe) and manganese (Mn) values. This implies that both Moringa species have similar quantity of Ca, Na, P, Fe and Mn in their leaf tissues. The almost identical nutrient values of the two Moringa species, suggests that M. ovalifolia could serve as an alternative supplement for livestock since there is a known human-livestock competition for M. oleifera, and since M. ovalifolia is native and well adapted to the harsh environmental conditions of Namibia.

Abstract:
Introduction: Patient waiting time Experience of waiting time in general is perceived as complex, subjective and culturally influenced. Complexity of prescription, few human resources and work process are the factors of patient waiting time in outpatient pharmacy departments (OPD). However, the complexity of wait time is poorly understood and has been explored only to a limited extent. Objective of the study: The main objective of this study is to assess patient satisfactions on waiting time at Intermediate Hospital Oshakati (IHO), northern part of Namibia. Method: The study was carried out at IHQuantitative descriptive design was employed and data collected was analyzed using Epi info version 7. Results: The mean waiting time in IHO was 36±20 minutes. More patients (49.2%) were satisfied with OPD pharmacy when the waiting time is between 5-25 minutes. The major factors associated with the satisfaction of services were shorter waiting time (0.01 <p<0.05) and other personal reasons like long distance from the hospital (0.03<p<0.05). Conclusion and recommendation: Many patients are satisfied if waiting time is between 5-25 minutes, therefore there is a need to improve waiting time by decongest patients overload at IHO, this can be achieved by improving coordination and communication between IHO and Primary health care (PHC) facilities.

Abstract:
Rapid Rotation Mirror-like surface Grinding (RRMG), in which combine Rapid Rotation Grinding (RRG) and Truncate Truing with Micro Dressing (TTMD) are combined, is a suitable method for mirror-like surface finishing with high efficiency. The surface roughness of a workpiece decreased with increasing work speed of RRMG, contradicting the conventional grinding principle on grinding geometry and kinematics. Furthermore, it was analyzed that a heat-affected layer and subsurface microstructure of the workpiece having a surface roughness Ra of less than 0.05 μm were obtained by RRMG. As a result, it was clarified that the thickness of the heat-affected layer was decreased and the subsurface microstructure was nanocrystallized, because the grinding temperature was suppressed with increasing peripheral work speed of RRMG.

Abstract:
This study used photovoice methodology to explore how people with early-stage dementia use their perceived strength and resources to cope with the illness. Purposive sampling was used to recruit participants. Thirteen women and seven men age 57 to 90 (mean 73.4) with MMSE scores ranging from 20 to 28 (mean 25.6) participated in the project. Participants were provided with a disposable camera and invited to take photographs relevant to their well-being. The photographs provided the means for participants to take the lead in dialogue sessions about their coping response. Grounded theory analysis revealed that initially, early-stage dementia precipitated a disruption in well-being. For the participants in this study, learning to live with the illness was an ongoing, continually shifting process of adjustment, where the participants moved from a familiar sense of well-being to an alternative sense of well-being. In this process the participants used a variety of strengths and resources ranging from those that supported them in reconstructing identity, regaining control, and rebuilding relationships to those that assisted them in reestablishing a healthy lifestyle and restoring meaning and purpose. Striving toward well-being while acknowledging the inconceivable notion of losing one's cognitive abilities was the central strength that the participants brought to this process. It captured the paradox the participants faced in living with early-stage dementia, which was to relegate the illness to the background of their lives while managing its symptoms in the foreground.

Abstract:
Abstracts in English, Afrikaans and Zulu
This research investigated work as a calling, the relationship with work engagement and the effect on burnout in the Namibian health care sector. A quantitative survey was conducted on a convenient sample of nurses (N = 261) employed by government and private hospitals in Namibia. Kendall's tau_b correlation analysis indicated a positive correlation between job/calling orientation and total work engagement, and a negative correlation with the burnout sub-dimensions of exhaustion and cynicism/ depersonalisation. The results of this study also suggest that both job/calling and work engagement are statistically related to the respondents’ positive world view, which is an important attribute for quality of life. Additionally, the study revealed that burnout had a partial mediation effect on the interaction between job/calling and work engagement. Selected demographic characteristics had a partial moderation effect on the relationship between job/calling orientation, work engagement and burnout. These findings may provide new knowledge for the design of workplace practices that assess calling orientation, and may enhance work engagement. The study provided a deepened understanding of the interrelationships between work as a calling, work engagement and burnout. On a practical level, the recommendations provided can be used by human resource management practitioners, nurse managers and health care providers to motivate health care workers to become more productive in the provision of quality health care, and to improve the management of employees throughout their employment life cycle.

Marcotte, Anita. "Resident-centered care and work satisfaction of health care aides working with personal care home residents living with dementia." 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/1993/3148.

Full text
Abstract:
Resident-centered care has been the standard philosophy in accredited personal care homes (PCHs) across Canada since 1990. Health care aides (HCAs) are the primary health care providers in PCHs and key to residents' quality of care and quality of life. However, studies have not examined HCA work satisfaction in relation to the four elements of resident-centered care: providing flexible scheduling, following residents' preferences, promoting a home-like environment and offering permanent assignment to promote consistency of care. This cross-sectional, ethnographic study was conducted using face-to-face interviews with nine HCAs working in four PCHs in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. The results indicate that HCAs' work satisfaction was highly related to their caring relationships with residents and their working relationships with other HCAs and staff. The implementation of resident-centered care depended on institutional and managerial support. Lack of this support created stressful situations for HCAs and caused them concern about the quality of care and quality of life of residents.

Abstract:
Health information technology (HIT) has become an important part of patient care, and can provide useful solutions for a quality assurance and improvement (QA&I) program by illustrating current quality and demonstrating gaps in quality that can be targeted for improvement. Like any other information technology project, however, HIT solutions can give misleading results if the wrong information is selected for review or if there are systematic errors in data handling. Although many health information systems are sometimes maligned as a glorified statistical tool or billing document, well-designed and implemented anesthesia information management systems (AIMS), perioperative electronic health records (EHR), and other software solutions can provide an excellent vehicle for use in quality programs. When planning the implementation of a major HIT project, it is usually best to start at the “end”—the desired workflow and goals of the project—and then work backward.

Abstract:
A key objective of the study of work-family balance detailed in this report was to build an evidence base to inform policy creation or refinement targeting work-family balance and related implementation standards to ensure the protection and preservation of Qatari families. Two complementary projects were designed and implemented to achieve this key objective. The first project was a qualitative study involving in-depth interviews with 20 Qatari working adults (10 males and 10 females). The interviews were designed to learn the meaning of work-family balance among Qataris, identify the factors shaping work-family balance or the lack thereof, and collect firsthand detailed information on the use and value of policy-relevant work-family balance sup - ports for working Qataris. The second component was a survey designed to describe work-family balance among working Qatari adults, determine potential health and well-being consequences of poor work-family balance, and characterize Qataris’ use of and preferences for new work-family balance supports. The data from the qualitative interviews tell a very clear story of work-family balance among Qataris. Work-family balance is primarily viewed as working adults’ ability to meet responsibilities in both the work and family domains. Although work-fam - ily balance was valued and sought after, participants viewed work-family balance as an idyllic goal that is unattainable. Indeed, when individuals were asked about the last time they experienced balance, the most common response was “during my last vacation or extended holiday.” The challenge of achieving work-family balance was equally shared by males and females, although the challenge was heightened for females. Qataris recognized that “work” was essential to securing or providing a desirable family life; that is, work provided the financial wherewithal to obtain the features and comforts of contemporary family life in Qatar. However, the cost of this financial wherewithal was work hours and a psychological toll characterized as “long” and “exhausting” which left workers with insufficient time and energy for the family. Participants commented on the absolute necessity of paid maternity leave for work-family balance, and suggested it be expanded. Participants also discussed the importance of high-quality childcare, and the need for greater flexibility for attending to family responsibilities during the working day. Data from the quantitative national survey reinforce the results from the qualitative interviews. Work-family balance is a challenge for most working adults: if work-fam - ily balance were given scores like academic grades in school, the majority of both males and females would earn a "C" or lower (average, minimal pass or failure). As intimated in the qualitative data, working females’ work-family balance is statistically poorer than that of males. Poor work-family balance is associated with poorer physical and mental health, with particularly strong negative associations with depression. It appears the Human Resource Law of 2016 was effective in raising awareness of and access to paid maternity leave. However, a substantial minority of working Qataris lack access to work-family balance supports from their employer, and the supports that are provided by employers do not meet the expectations of the average Qatari worker.

Abstract:
The fundamental problems that have arisen over the last half-century in treatments of divine action in the Christian tradition stem from a failure to come to terms with the concept of action. Theologians and philosophers have assumed that we can have a closed conception of agency on a par with the concept of knowledge. On the contrary, the concept of action is a general concept like “event,” “quality,” or “thing.” It is an open concept with a great variety of context-dependent criteria. Recent work on the concept of action can provide an initial and utterly indispensable orientation in work on divine agency and divine action, but it cannot resolve fundamental questions about what God has really done; nor can it illuminate the particular actions of God that are so important in theology. For that we need to turn to theology proper, that is, to work in historical and systematic theology.

Abstract:
Obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) is a complex, often debilitating syndrome that significantly diminishes quality of life. Although the exact prevalence of OCD is unclear, estimates suggest that it is a common form of psychopathology in the West and throughout the world. A challenge to researchers and clinicians is the significant heterogeneity of OCD. Initial heterogeneity research points to important subtypes of the disorder. Elucidation of disorder heterogeneity might advance etiologic theory and treatment research, and suggest where OCD or OCD-like conditions should be placed in a comprehensive psychiatric disorder nosology. OCD more often occurs with other psychiatric disorders, and evaluation of OCD comorbidity will help clarify this condition’s relation to anxiety disorders, mood disorders, and conditions posited to be part of a broad OCD spectrum. Despite significant advancements, much work remains before we can fully understand obsessional disorders and the relation of OCD to commonly experienced negative intrusive thoughts.

This chapter looks at Marcus Clarke's For the Term of His Natural Life (1870–1872), which is considered as his enduring contribution to Australian literature and to a broader literature of empire. The peculiarly citational quality of the novel is barely intelligible without understanding the way in which Clarke came to situate himself in relationship to both colonial literary culture and to an emerging European canon. His acute sense of having to balance cultural legitimacy against commercial viability lends his work an unusual degree of self-consciousness in regard to the processes of commodification and the regimes of cultural capital that were having an enormous impact on the development of mid-nineteenth-century Melbourne, the city in which Clarke lived and worked. Ultimately, a novel like His Natural Life reflects the desire to reproduce the popular textual forms of the metropolis in the everyday experience of the colonies.

Abstract The maturity of organizations is measured with process assessment models like the ISO/IEC 33001. The product quality is aligned with internal and external product quality charactersitics based on models like the ISO/IEC 25010. With the shift from the Tailorism-driven process orientation to a more people centric organization, the two dimensions process and product quality have to be extened by the people or team quality dimension. The presented approach offers aspects for agile Team Work Quality (aTWQ), as well as related measurement indicators. The approach is evaluated in the large enterprise context of the Volkswagen AG. The indicators of aTWQ have been integrated and established in the agile tool box for a sustainable agile transition of the company.

In this chapter, we guide you through the final stages of completing your written work. Too often novice writers skip this vital stage of writing, thinking that their earlier drafts and revisions are sufficient. But experienced writers know that one last careful review is needed to assure the highest quality of work possible. By the end of this chapter, you will be able to do the following: ■Identify the different features of effective writing ■ Examine your written work from various perspectives ■ Take systematic steps to improve the quality of your writing ■ Finalize your written work so that it meets the expectations of your target audience As you work through the chapter, the Revising and Editing on Your Own tasks will guide you as you do the following: 18A Prepare to finalize your work 18B Check organization 18C Verify follow-through 18D Eliminate redundancy 18E Maximize conciseness 18F Check tense and voice 18G Correct common errors 18H Review science content 18I Reconfirm adherence to external guidelines 18J Check formatting and overall appearance By the time you consult this chapter, you have most likely revised and edited your work countless times. You have written separate sections, modified them, and then merged them, altering your writing throughout the process in an attempt to fit all the pieces together seamlessly. You have probably lost count of all the changes, large and small, that you have made (or been asked to make) in an effort to perfect your writing. Indeed, for most writers, more time is spent rewriting than writing. In this chapter, we ask you to look again at your written work, but this time as an entire document. Rather than write and rewrite section by section, we ask you to take a step back and reflect on your work as a whole. The goal is to achieve a coherent and fluent piece of writing that reads well from start to finish. To facilitate this process, we have created a checklist of nine items (listed below). We present each item and ask you to review your entire work from the perspective of this item, making changes and improvements as needed.

In January 2018, about 17 percent of the workforce in the United States had a part-time job. Part-time employment increased between 1955 and the 1980s as large numbers of women entered the workforce. Since then it has fluctuated in response to rising and falling unemployment. The majority of part-time workers are between 24 and 60 and about two-thirds are women, who often divide their time between work and family. Like other forms of nonstandard work, part-time workers are more likely to have bad jobs, and they are more apt to live in families that are poor, even when controlling for a multitude of labor related variables. Although some part-time jobs offer health and retirement benefits and wages above the poverty threshold, most do not. Only a small share of part-time jobs-between 16 and 17 percent-are located in the primary labor market. When compared to whites, we find that blacks, Hispanic non-citizens, and persons of mixed-race descent are more likely to work part-time. Part-time workers in these groups are also more likely to have jobs in the secondary labor market. Finally, we find that as percentage of part-time workers in occupations increases, the negative effect on job quality associated with the percentage of women in an occupation is greatly reduced or disappear

This chapter introduces the journal article module. The chapter describes some of the defining characteristics of a journal article while emphasizing concise writing and organization. By the end of this chapter, you should be able to do the following: Recognize the importance ■ of concise writing ■ Identify the broad organizational structure of journal articles ■ Explain what is meant by targeted reading and keywords As you move through the chapter, you will begin to plan your own journal- quality paper. The Writing on Your Own tasks throughout the chapter will guide you in this process: 2A Get started 2B Select your topic 2C Conduct a literature search 2D Find additional resources 2E Decide on the broad organization of your paper Module 1 focuses entirely on writing a journal-quality paper, a paper suitable for submission to a refereed chemistry journal. Refereed journals include only articles that have made it through a rigorous peer-review process. In this process, a submitted manuscript is critically reviewed by two or more anonymous reviewers. The reviewers are asked to judge both the scientific merit and writing quality of the manuscript. Authors are often required to revise their work before it can be accepted for publication. The entire review process can take six months or longer. An account of the review process typically appears in the published article, for example, Received for review March 9, 2008. Revised manuscript received August 3, 2008. Accepted August 5, 2008. Once published, the journal article becomes part of the primary literature of chemistry. The primary literature is a permanent and public record of all scientific works, many of which are refereed journal articles.

Abstract:
In this chapter, we focus on writing a Methods section for a journal-quality paper. We begin with the Methods section because this is the section that many chemists write first, in part because this section describes what they know best: the procedures they have repeated (many times) to conduct their work. Moreover, most research groups use similar methodologies for several years; hence, previously written Methods sections can serve as models for writing new Methods sections. Together, these factors make the Methods section one of the easier sections to write and an excellent place to begin our writing instruction. By the end of this chapter, you will be able to do the following: ■ Know how to address the intended audience of a Methods section ■ Recognize which details to include and exclude from a Methods section ■ Organize a Methods section following standard moves ■ Use capitalization, abbreviations, and parentheses appropriately ■ Format numbers and units correctly ■ Use verb tense and voice in conventional manners As you work through the chapter, you will write a Methods section for your own paper. The Writing on Your Own tasks throughout the chapter will guide you step by step as you do the following: 3A Read the literature 3B Describe materials 3C Describe experimental methods 3D Describe numerical methods 3E Practice peer review 3F Fine-tune your Methods section The purpose of the Methods section is to address how a particular work was conducted. Relevant information about instrumentation and experimental and/ or numerical procedures is described. The goal is to describe the information in enough detail that an expert (not a novice) could repeat the work. Usually, this section is formally called, for example, Materials and Methods or Experimental Section, but for brevity, we call it simply the Methods section. Many of you have written a Methods section previously for a college-level chemistry course. Thus, we begin with an exercise to test your current knowledge about writing a Methods section.

The imperial manufacture of porcelain in the Qing dynasty was always related to the broad state economy and politics, especially ritual. As has been revealed in administrative regulations and raw material supply, porcelain production seemed to be an independent operation like other court art production. However, as evidence regarding managerial personnel, finance, quality control, and design shows, the technology for producing porcelain was integral to other material production at court. Thus, multiple productive processes were interdependent and they influenced each other. The productive processes and products of court art showcase the character of monarchical industry.

Abstract:
The work done by some authors in the fields of computer science, artificial intelligence, and multi-agent systems foresees an approximation of these disciplines and those of the social sciences, namely, in the areas of anthropology, sociology, and psychology. Much of this work has been done in terms of the humanization of the behavior of virtual entities by expressing human-like feelings and emotions. Some authors (e.g., Ortony, Clore & Collins, 1988; Picard, 1997) suggest lines of action considering ways to assign emotions to machines. Attitudes like cooperation, competition, socialization, and trust are explored in many different areas (Arthur, 1994; Challet & Zhang, 1998; Novais et al., 2004). Other authors (e.g., Bazzan et al., 2000; Castelfranchi, Rosis & Falcone, 1997) recognize the importance of modeling virtual entity mental states in an anthropopathic way. Indeed, an important motivation to the development of this project comes from the author’s work with artificial intelligence in the area of knowledge representation and reasoning, in terms of an extension to the language of logic programming, that is, the Extended Logic Programming (Alferes, Pereira & Przymusinski, 1998; Neves, 1984). On the other hand, the use of null values to deal with imperfect knowledge (Gelfond, 1994; Traylor & Gelfond, 1993) and the enforcement of exceptions to characterize the behavior of intelligent systems (Analide, 2004) is another justification for the adoption of these formalisms in this knowledge arena. Knowledge representation, as a way to describe the real world based on mechanical, logical, or other means, will always be a function of the systems ability to describe the existent knowledge and their associated reasoning mechanisms. Indeed, in the conception of a knowledge representation system, it must be taken into attention different instances of knowledge.

In multi-player cloud gaming two or more people from different locations may actively participate in gaming as like they were in a similar geographical location. In such cases handling massive user inputs, performance rendering, bandwidth fluctuations, load balancing, data capturing, data transmission in real time still remains a cumbersome in cloud gaming. In this chapter, we propose a framework that overcomes the major issues associated with quality of service in cloud gaming. The cloud platform consists of two environments namely workbench and runtime environment, where the work bench environment comprises of tools like end user tools, data parsing tools and data integrity tools through which the user input is analyzed and sent to the run time environment for further processing. Each tool present at the cloud platform helps in achieving the quality factors through its functionalities. The user request is processed and the results will be sent to the clients through the runtime environment.

This chapter book presents Medellín Air qUality Initiative or MAUI Project; it tells a brief story of this teamwork, their scientific and technological directions. The modeling work focuses on the ecosystems and human health impact due to the exposition of several pollutants transported from long-range places and deposited. For this objective, the WRF and LOTOS-EUROS were configurated and implemented over the región of interest previously updating some input conditions like land use and orography. By other side, a spinoff initiative named SimpleSpace was also born during this time, developing, through this instrumentation branch a very compact and modular low-cost sensor to deploy in new air quality networks over the study domain. For testing this instrument and find an alternative way to measure pollutants in the vertical layers, the Helicopter In-Situ Pollution Assessment Experiment HIPAE misión was developed to take data through the overflight of a helicopter over Medellín. From the data obtained from the Simple units and other experiments in the payload, a citogenotoxicity analysis quantify the cellular damage caused by the exposition of the pollutants.

The subject of this work is the study of time series of fluctuations or noise-like time series. Very often, such time series are considered as a standard of randomness. For example, time series of alpha decay rate fluctuations are commonly used as a very high quality random number generator. It is believed that locally such time series are completely random and do not carry any information. Therefore, the main methods of their research are global, for example, the distribution function.

Abstract:
A number of new materials are being developed for advanced applications like nuclear pressure vessels, missile casing and pressurized chambers for space launching vehicles. These newly developed high strength alloys demanding high strength joining, put rigorous requirements on the manufacturers to weld smartly i.e. sound welds at competitive cost. Welding is a very complex phenomenon and the quality and cost of the weldment is a function of interaction between a number of variables, making it more difficult but still indispensable to estimate the cost effects of different welding processes for smart welds. The primary objective of this research work is to develop, apply and evaluate state of the art methodical approach to compare and select welding processes in a productive environment based on market requirements of quality and costs for aerospace and nuclear applications. A case study based on several welding processes: SMAW, GTAW, pulsed GTAW, GMAW with CO2 and Argon shielding gases and pulsed GMAW is conducted both from quality and cost aspects. For quality analysis, geometrical aspects of the weld beads and for cost analysis, welding parameters and prices of consumables are considered. In appendage to that, sensitivity analysis of the cost for different variables is also conducted to evaluate the effects of variation in the values of significant variables on the cost.

Abstract:
In Latvia one third of the total forest area is regenerated by planting tree seedlings and therefore it is important to choose the appropriate soil preparation method and the right type of regeneration material for each forest type. Usually the success of afforestation is evaluated by how high is the average seedling survival rate and growth parameters like height, annual increment, diameter at breast height while the location of the seedling is disregarded. This may be of great importance since in such stands the environmental conditions typically are not entirely homogenous. Micro topography differences impact seedling growth, because it modifies water regime, temperature, micronutrient availability, sun radiation and other factors. Therefore, aim of this work is to improve monitoring methods and determine the most efficient soil preparation and seedling preparation combination to improve the quality of forest regeneration. That could be done using ASTA documentation system originally developed to show seedling and mound location and density in planting area during mechanic planting. But it also allows to link the precise location of the seedling and growing conditions with its growing rate and survival and therefore it is easier to exclude seedlings that are affected by other factors than those that you are interested in, so you can gain more representative results. This also could be used in forest management. When using ASTA system it is also possible to display how different tree disease are distributed in the stand, if they have spread eventually or localized only in some parts of the stand, also it can be used for browsing and other tree damage monitoring in the stand. In conclusion: in harsh environmental conditions on unprepared forest soil and soil prepared in furrows made by disc trench larger seedlings show better survival rate. Survival of seedlings is significantly impacted by micro topography, whereas mounded micro sites equalize local environmental conditions that reduce impact of micro topography.

Abstract:
Abstract Probabilistic methods are gaining in importance in aerospace engineering due to their ability to describe the behavior of the system in the presence of input value variance. A frequently employed probabilistic method is the Monte Carlo Simulation (MCS). There, a sample of random representative realizations is evaluated deterministically and their results are afterwards analyzed with statistical methods. Possible statistical results are mean, standard deviation, quantile values and correlation coefficients. Since the sample is generated randomly, the result of a MCS will differ for each repetition. Therefore, it can be regarded as a random variable. Confidence Intervals (CIs) are commonly used to quantify this variance. To gain the true CI, many repetitions of the MCS have to be conducted, which is not desirable due to limitations in time and computational power. Hence, analytical formulations or bootstrapping is used to estimate the CI. In order to reduce the variance of the result of a MCS, sampling techniques with variance reduction properties like Latin Hypercube Sampling (LHS) are commonly used. But the known methods to determine the CI do not consider this variance reduction and tend to overestimate it instead. Furthermore, it is difficult to predict the change of the CI size with increasing size of the sample. In the present work, new methods to calculate the CI are introduced. They allow a more precise CI estimation when LHS is used for a MCS. For this purpose, the system is approximated by means of a meta model. The distribution of the result value is now approximated by repeating the MCS many times. The time consuming deterministic calculations of a MCS are thus replaced with an evaluation on the meta model. These so called virtual MCS can therefore be performed in a short amount of time. The estimated distribution of the result value can be used to estimate the CI. It is, however, not sufficient to use only the meta model. The error ε, defined as the difference between the true value y and the approximated value y, must be considered as well. The generated meta model can also be used to predict the size of the CI at different sample sizes. The suggested methods were applied to two test cases. The first test case examines a structural mechanics application of a bending beam, which features low computational cost. This allows to show that the predicted sizes of the CI are sufficiently precise. The second test case covers the aerodynamic application. Therefore, an aerodynamic Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis accounting for geometrical variations of NASA’s Rotor 37 is conducted. For this, the blade is parametrized with the in-house tool Blade2Parameter. For different sample sizes, blades are generated using this parametrization. Their geometrical variance is based on experience values. CFD calculations for these blades are performed with the commercial software NUMECA. Afterwards, the CIs for result values of interest like mechanical efficiency are evaluated with the presented methods. The suggested methods predict a narrower and thus less conservative CI.

Abstract:
Simple, efficient and compact concentrating systems are of prime importance to the development of portable biosensor based testing solutions for bacterial contamination in potable water. Bacteria are non-uniformly distributed in drinking water and hence testing with small sample volumes does not provide an accurate estimation. Hence bacteria have to be concentrated from large volumes of water of the order of 100 mL as recommended by United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) to a few hundred microliters to accommodate within portable biosensor platforms like Lab on a Chip (LOC), paper microfluidics and micro-cantilever systems. In the present work, we have developed a simplified, rapid, handheld and field deployable concentrating module which involves filtration of contaminated water through a hollow fiber filter using tangential flow filtration and a subsequent elution step to facilitate the transfer of the concentrated mixture on to a portable biosensor platform. The process involves the collection of water sample in a 5 mL syringe. With the aid of two other syringes, the sample volume is concentrated by passing it through the hollow fiber a couple of times. For improved efficiency, bacteria recovery is performed using 1 mL of a non-ionic surfactant (Tween 20) solution as an elution fluid which is administered by another syringe. The bacteria along with the elution fluid form the required concentrated mixture. This elution strategy was found to be very efficient and the product recovery was close to 85%. With further modification to the current configuration, the system can be developed into a highly efficient pre-concentrating module compatible with any microfluidics based platform.

Abstract:
Vehicles with off-road capabilities in the present times have begun to focus more on ride comfort. One of the most common uses of such vehicles is to help commuters travel on rough terrain, away from paved roads. Vertical suspensions carry out the work of minimizing the impact from objects like rocks and stones that comprise the terrain. However, such undulations in the terrain are not just vertically bulged. The geometry of the object, i.e., the rock/stone and the wheel coming in contact with the object gives rise to the familiar vertical impact forces for which vertical suspensions are provided. The other component of the impact force arising from the same irregular geometry of the undulation, i.e., the horizontal component of impact force which acts parallel to the axle of the wheels remains neglected. This might lead to passengers experiencing sideways swaying while inside the vehicle, even if there are independent vertical suspensions. In this paper, a study of the effects of horizontal component of impact forces on off-road vehicles was done and after that, spring-shock absorber arrangements to counter these forces were analyzed with springs of different spring-stiffness values.

Full text
Abstract:
Transients following switching in the network and/or the tripping of generating unit auxiliaries can excite oscillatory torques on the turbine-generator-rotor-shaft system. The oscillations can be damped or amplified with time. Damped oscillations affect the power quality and if the oscillations grow with time they may even lead to generating unit outages (and damages) resulting in possible system instabilities. Deregulation of electricity markets has resulted in separation of Utility Companies (responsible for power generation) and Transmission Companies (responsible for power transmission). The decision making is no more under the same umbrella. Companies on both the sides have severe cost reduction focus and each side is tempted to make independent decision favourable to it. The Transmission Companies want to enhance transmission capacity of existing systems by introducing measures like series capacitor compensation. However incorporation of series capacitor compensation may under certain conditions lead to oscillations and also snbsynchronous resonance. Currently, there is an urgent need to establish a systematic methodology to investigate the root cause of such oscillations so that preventive measures can be taken by both the Utility Companies and the Transmission Companies. This paper is a contribution in this direction. In this work, comprehensive dynamic model of synchronous generator system has been developed in software Matlab/Simulink. Generating unit start up and ramp loading to rated load has been simulated to get deeper insight into the oscillatory behaviour of the synchronous generator. Block loading of the turbine generator and sudden load shedding due to auxiliary trip have been investigated in detail. Further, power system network with bus connected parallel generating units and parallel transmission lines, having different series capacitor compensation ratio have been simulated in power system software NETOMAC. Transient conditions have been modelled to investigate the oscillations and the consequent torsional torques and angles between adjacent masses of the rotor shaft system causing fatigue life reduction. This work has very clearly revealed the complex dynamic interrelationship among variables responsible for power system oscillations.

Abstract:
Much of the technology in advanced diesel engines, such as high injection pressures, is aimed at overcoming the short ignition delay of conventional diesel fuels to promote premixed combustion in order to reduce NOx and smoke. Previous work in a 2 litre single cylinder diesel engine with a compression ratio of 14 has demonstrated that gasoline fuel, because of its high ignition delay, is very beneficial for premixed compression ignition compared to a conventional diesel fuel. We have now done similar studies in a smaller — 0.537 litre — single cylinder diesel engine with a compression ratio of 15.8. The engine was run on three fuels of very different auto-ignition quality — a typical European diesel fuel with a cetane number (CN) of 56, a typical European gasoline of 95 RON and 85 MON with an estimated CN of 16 and another gasoline of 84 RON and 78 MON (estimated CN of 21). The previous results with gasoline were obtained only at 1200 rpm — here we compare the fuels also at 2000 rpm and 3000 rpm. At 1200 rpm, at low loads (∼4 bar IMEP) when smoke is negligible, NOx levels below 0.4 g/kWh can be easily attained with gasoline without using EGR while this is not possible with the 56 CN European diesel. At these loads, the maximum pressure rise rate is also significantly lower for gasoline. At 2000 rpm, with 2 bar absolute intake pressure, NOx can be reduced below 0.4 g/kWh with negligible smoke (FSN <0.1) with gasoline between 10 and 12 bar IMEP using sufficient EGR while this is not possible with the diesel fuel. At 3000 rpm, with the intake pressure at 2.4 bar absolute, NOx of 0.4 g/KWh with negligible smoke was attainable with gasoline at 13 bar IMEP. Hydrocarbon and CO emissions are higher for gasoline and will require after-treatment. High peak heat release rates can be alleviated using multiple injections. Large amounts of gasoline, unlike diesel, can be injected very early in the cycle without causing heat release during the compression stroke and this enables the heat release profile to be shaped.

Abstract:
It is very rare to adopt ultra large diameter glass reinforced plastic pipe in the Chinese nuclear power field. The construction techniques like safety and quality control, design tracking, construction organization, schedule control and other perspectives are still lacking of experiences. So the accumulation of construction experiences for this kind of structure became a key work in the nuclear power plant construction phase.

Abstract:
Previous work on satisficing planning using greedy best-first search (GBFS) has shown that non-greedy, randomized exploration can help escape uninformative heuristic regions and solve hard problems faster. Despite their success when used with GBFS, such exploration techniques cannot be directly applied to bounded suboptimal algorithms like Weighted A* (WA*) without losing the solution-quality guarantees. In this work, we present Type-WA*, a novel bounded suboptimal planning algorithm that augments WA* with type-based exploration while still satisfying WA*'s theoretical solution-quality guarantee. Our empirical analysis shows that Type-WA* significantly increases the number of solved problems, when used in conjunction with each of three popular heuristics. Our analysis also provides insight into the runtime vs. solution cost trade-off.

Abstract:
Emissions from trash burning represent an important component of regional air quality, especially in countries such as India where the practice of roadside, residential, and municipal trash burning is highly prevalent. However, research on trash emissions is limited due to difficulties associated with measuring a source that varies widely in composition and burning characteristics. To investigate trash burning in India, a collaborative program was formed among RTI, Duke University, and the India Institute of Technology (IIT) in Gandhinagar, involving both senior researchers and students. In addition to researching emission measurement techniques, this program aimed to foster international partnerships and provide students with a hands-on educational experience, culminating in a pilot study in India. Before traveling, students from Duke and IIT met virtually to design experiments. IIT students were able to visit proposed sites and offer specified knowledge on burning practices prior to the pilot study, allowing potential experiments to be iteratively improved. The results demonstrated a proof of concept of using a low-cost sensor attached to a commercial drone to measure emissions from a municipal dump site. In addition, for small-scale residential and roadside trash burning, a combustor was designed to burn trash in a consistent way. Results suggested that thermocouples and low-cost sensors may offer an affordable way for combustor designers to assess particulate emissions during prototype iterations. More experiences like this should be made available so that future research can benefit from the unique insights that come from having veteran researchers work with students and from forming international partnerships.

Facts about adolescents from the Demographic and Health Survey—Statistical tables for program planning: Namibia 1992. Population Council, 2001. http://dx.doi.org/10.31899/pgy21.1027.

Full text
Abstract:
The Population Council initiated its work on adolescents in the mid-1990s. At that time, those advocating greater attention to adolescent issues were concerned about adolescent fertility—particularly outside of marriage—and adolescent “risk-taking” behavior. As an international scientific organization with its mandate centered around the needs of developing countries, the Council sought a more nuanced and context-specific understanding of the problems confronting adolescents in the developing world. In working with colleagues inside and outside the Council, it became clear that information on adolescents, and the way data are organized, were limiting the ability to understand the diversity of their experiences or to develop programs to address that diversity. In the absence of data, many adolescent policies were implicitly based on the premise that the lives of adolescents in developing countries were like those of adolescents in Western countries. In fact, significant numbers of young people in the West do not fit this description, and even larger groups within the developing countries. The Council created tables to more clearly describe the diversity of the adolescent experience by drawing on Namibia Demographic and Health Survey data. The tables, presented in this report, are intended to be used as a basis for developing programs.
