Two aspects of gauge theories are studied in the non-perturbative regime; firstly, using a set of pre-determined, approximate renormalised Feynman rules, the divergent parts of the O(α(_8)) virtual graphs of the process e(^+)e" → qq are determined to explicitly test whether multiplicative renormalisation is preserved by these rules. The calculation is performed using dimensional regularisation in 2(2 - ɛ) dimensional Euclidean space, where the divergences appear as 1/ɛ(^n) poles as ɛ → 0 Though the corrections to both the fermion-photon vertex and to the final state self energy are shown to ha

When calculating scattering processes in theories involving massless gauge bosons, such as gluons in Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD), one encounters infrared (IR), or soft, divergences. To obtain precise predictions, it is important to have exact expressions for these IR divergences, which are present in any on-shell scattering amplitude. Due to their long wavelength, soft gluons factorise with respect to short-distance, or hard, interactions and can be captured by correlators of semi-infinite Wilson lines. The latter obey a renormalisation group equation, which gives rise to exponentiation. The

Several different approaches to renormalization are studied. The Callan-Symanzik equation is derived and we study its beta functions. An effective potential for the Coleman-Weinberg model is studied to find that the beta function is positive and that spontaneous symmetry breaking will occur if we expand around the classical field. Lastly we renormalize a non-abelian gaugetheory to find that the beta function in QCD is negative.

Lattice gauge theory is a special regularization of continuum gauge theories and the numerical simulation of lattice quantum chromodynamics (QCD) remains as the only first principle method to study non-perturbative QCD at low energy. The lattice spacing a, which serves as the ultraviolet cut off, plays a significant role in determining error on any lattice simulation results. Physical results come from extrapolating a series of simulations with different values for a to a=0. Reducing the size of these errors for non-zero a improves the extrapolation and minimizes the error. In the stron
