Dove, Christopher John. "Explicit wavefunction collapse and quantum measurement." Thesis, Durham University, 1996. http://etheses.dur.ac.uk/5187/.

Abstract:
In this thesis, we are concerned with models of explicit wavefunction collapse as a possible solution to the measurement problem of quantum mechanics. We examine the models where collapse is to near-position eigenstates, originally introduced by Ghirardi, Rimini and Weber in 1986, where the wavefunction is spontaneously localized at random times. Subsequent models where some of the problems of the GRW model are solved, are discussed, for both sudden localization and continuous localization processes. We comment briefly on the possible origins of collapse. The consequences of possible wavefunct

This project is an active exploration of subjectivities through the medium of weaving. In a narrative illustrated with woven works, the emotional trajectory of this person of mixed cultural background through Swedish society is described. First, the work is contextualized in terms of the larger politico-cultural-discursive context, entitled the outside. It is then positioned in terms of the individual context, the inside, largely dramatized as the developments in the art of western tapestry in the past century. This culminates in the final works, three of which are presented in the final exhib

Abstract:
Quantum mechanics exhibits a broad collection of theoretical results in complete agreement with experimental evidence. Besides showing unquestionable success in the description of isolated systems, it can be also successfully used to characterize non-isolated quantum system. In such a case, phenomena like dissipation, diffusion or decoherence. The theory of open quantum systems provides the framework where such features can be conveniently explained. This thesis is about decoherence and collapse models. Albeit conceptually they are very far from each other, they both belong the framework of o

Abstract:
Quantum mechanics, with the usual orthodox interpretation, leads to the problem of macroscopic linear superpositions: to avoid them the wave-function collapse postulate was introduced, forcing an arbitrary distinction between the microscopic (the system) and the macroscopic (the measurement apparatus). To resolve this issue, spontaneous collapse models suggest to combine the Schrödinger evolution with the wave-function collapse in a single dynamical law: in the microscopic regime we reobtain the predictions of quantum mechanics, within experimental errors, while for macroscopic objects we obta

Abstract:
The work of this PhD investigates spontaneous collapse models, which are a proposed modification of quantum mechanics and their consistency with special relativity. Since soon after they were first proposed there have been many attempts to construct a relativistic collapse model, but currently there is not a satisfactory model. This thesis considers what it means for an irreversible dynamics to be consistent with special relativity and reviews the existing proposals and their issues. The key results are a demonstration of why a relativistic point-like collapse model is not possible and that

Abstract:
We review two models implementing Newtonian gravity through a continuous measurement and feedback mechanism. These are the Kafri-Taylor-Milburn (KTM) and the Tilloy-Diósi (TD) models. We compare the KTM and the TD models in an appropriate limit and explicitly show that the associated decoherence effects are different. We propose a classification of models which implement gravity through a continuous measurement and feedback mechanism based on two main criteria: the type of observable measured and the type of interaction implemented through the feedback. We argue that within these scenarios, th

Abstract:
Collapse models solve the measurement problem by adding non-linear and stochastic terms to the usual Schroedinger dynamics. The resulting dynamics localizes in position macroscopic systems, while preserves quantum mechanical predictions for microscopic systems. Two of the main consequences of this resulting dynamics are: the loss of any initial spatial coherence, with a decoherence rate which increases with the dimensions of the system (amplification mechanism); and a heating effect induced on the system that, for long times, leads either to a divergent or to a convergent value of the energy,

Abstract:
We explore the behavior of gravitational solitons in classical theories with pathological vacua. We first focus on non-tachyonic non-supersymmetric string theories and the construction of brane solutions in the corresponding effective theories, which do not admit a maximally-symmetric vacuum. We then turn to metastable vacua and the holographic interpretation of the vacuum bubbles that may be produced therein by quantum tunneling. Finally, we discuss self-similar collapse solutions, with an eye to analogies with the settings considered in the preceding chapters.

Grâce à la DRX et HRTEM, nous avons pu identifier la nature du mécanisme régissant le collage orienté des nanoparticules. Abstract:
The experiment performed by Itano, Heinzen, Bollinger and Wineland on the quantum Zeno effect is analyzed in detail through a quantum map derived by conventional quantum mechanics based on the Schrodinger equation. The analysis shows that a slight modification of their experiment leads to a significantly different result from the one that is predicted through von Neumann's hypothesis of collapse of the wave function in the quantum measurement theory. This may offer a possibility of an experimental test of von Neumann's quantum measurement theory.<br>text
