A theoretical analysis of the rotational dynamics induced by off-axis binary collisions of quantum droplets constituted by ultracold atoms is reported. We focus on quantum droplets formed by degenerate dilute Bose gases made from binary mixtures of alkaline atoms under feasible experimental conditions. The stability of the ground state is known to be longer for the chosen heteronuclear gases than for the homonuclear ones. In both cases, we find that the dynamics seem to privilege high similarity of the density of each atomic species. However, the evolution of the phase of the corresponding order parameter differs significantly for heteronuclear admixtures. We evaluate the fidelity as a figure of merit for the overlap between the order parameters of each atomic species. Dynamical evidence of the differences between the phases of the order parameters is predicted to manifest in their corresponding linear and angular momenta. We numerically verify that the total angular and linear momenta are both conserved during the collision. Some direct correlations between the Weber number and the impact parameter with the distribution of the dynamical variables are established.

We construct a resource theory of sharpness for finite-dimensional positive operator-valued measures (POVMs), where the sharpness−non−increasing operations are given by quantum preprocessing channels and convex mixtures with POVMs whose elements are all proportional to the identity operator. As required for a sound resource theory of sharpness, we show that our theory has maximal (i.e., sharp) elements, which are all equivalent, and coincide with the set of POVMs that admit a repeatable measurement. Among the maximal elements, conventional non-degenerate observables are characterized as the canonical ones. More generally, we quantify sharpness in terms of a class of monotones, expressed as the EPR–Ozawa correlations between the given POVM and an arbitrary reference POVM. We show that one POVM can be transformed into another by means of a sharpness-non-increasing operation if and only if the former is sharper than the latter with respect to all monotones. Thus, our resource theory of sharpness is complete, in the sense that the comparison of all monotones provides a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of a sharpness-non-increasing operation between two POVMs, and operational, in the sense that all monotones are in principle experimentally accessible.

Experimental realization of a quantum degenerate gas of molecules would provide access to a wide range of phenomena in molecular and quantum sciences. However, the very complexity that makes ultracold molecules so enticing has made reaching degeneracy an outstanding experimental challenge over the past decade. We now report the production of a degenerate Fermi gas of ultracold polar molecules of potassium-rubidium. Through coherent adiabatic association in a deeply degenerate mixture of a rubidium Bose-Einstein condensate and a potassium Fermi gas, we produce molecules at temperatures below 0.3 times the Fermi temperature. We explore the properties of this reactive gas and demonstrate how degeneracy suppresses chemical reactions, making a long-lived degenerate gas of polar molecules a reality.

Mon projet de thèse a eu pour objectif la construction d'un dispositif expérimental visant à étudier, à très basse température, un mélange de gaz dégénéré composé de deux espèces fermioniques: 6Li et 40K. Une description détaillée du montage de sa mise en place ainsi qu'une caractérisation du dispositif sont présentées. Nous avons réalisé un piège magnéto-optique à deux espèces avec un très grand nombre d'atomes, et un transport magnétique sur une grande distance. Les premières expériences avec le mélange atomique ont permis la première création de molécules hétéronucléaires excitées 6Li40K* par photoassociation. Nous avons enregistré et assigné des spectres de photoassociation pour les états les plus faiblement liés de sept potentiels moléculaires et nous en avons déduit la forme des potentiels à longues distances. Nos résultats ouvrent la voie vers la formation de molécules bosoniques 6Li40K ultra-froides dans leur état fondamental, caractérisé par un grand moment dipolaire électrique permanent. Sur le plan théorique, nous avons développé une nouvelle méthode pour la manipulation des particules quantiques, qui pourrait être appliquée aux molécules 6Li40K. Cette méthode consiste à piéger les particules dans un potentiel oscillant rapidement et induire un changement instantané de phase du potentiel (un saut de phase). Nous montrons que le mouvement moyen des particules peut ainsi être manipulé de manière contrôlée. La méthode proposée a trouvé une première application pour les condensats de Bose-Einstein piégés à l'aide d'un piège magnétique du type "TOP".

The main features of the experimental setup are presented, in particular the addition of a new species ²³Na, which has enabled the study of the Bose-Fermi mixture ²³Na-⁴⁰K. Three main experimental benchmarks are outlined: first, the production of a Bose-Einstein Condensate of ⁴¹K is discussed and an evaluation of its properties as a coolant are analysed. Secondly, the creation of a triply degenerate Bose-Fermi-Fermi gas of ⁴¹K-⁴⁰K-⁶Li is presented. Simultaneous observation of Pauli Pressure and Bose Condensation in the triply degenerate gas is reported. In addition, interspecies Feshbach resonances between ⁴¹K-⁴⁰K and ⁶Li-⁴¹K are observed, opening the way to the study of a strongly interacting isotopic Bose-Fermi mixture of ⁴¹K-⁴⁰K, which have similar mass. Thirdly, the creation of a quantum degenerate Bose-Fermi mixture of ²³Na-⁴⁰K is discussed and over thirty Feshbach resonances are identified. Finally, a degenerate ²³Na-⁴⁰K Bose-Fermi mixture opens the way to creating fermionic NaK ground state molecules, which are known to be chemically stable and have a larger permanent electric dipole than KRb. This thesis concludes with a review of the molecular properties of NaK and explores the possibilities of bringing Feshbach molecules of NaK into the singlet rovibrational ground state.<br>by Ibon Santiago González.<br>S.M.

Ziel der Arbeit war die systematische theoretische Behandlung von Gemischen aus bosonischen und fermionischen Atomen in einem Parameterbereich, der sich zur Beschreibung von aktuellen Experimenten mit ultra-kalten atomaren Gasen eignet.<br /> <br /> Zuerst wurde der Formalismus der Quantenfeldtheorie auf homogene, atomare Boson-Fermion Gemische erweitert, um grundlegende Größen wie Quasiteilchenspektren, die Grundzustandsenergie und daraus abgeleitete Größen über die Molekularfeldtheorie hinaus zu berechnen.<br /> <br /> Unter Zuhilfenahme der dieser Resultate System wurde ein Boson-Fermion Gemisch in einem Fallenpotential im Rahmen der Dichtefunktionaltheorie beschrieben. Daraus konnten die Dichteprofile ermittelt werden und es ließen sich drei Bereiche im Phasendiagramm identifizieren: <br /> (i) ein Bereich eines stabilen Gemisches,<br /> (ii) ein Bereich, in dem die Spezies entmischt sind und <br /> (iii) ein Bereich, in dem das System kollabiert.<br /> <br /> Im letzten dieser drei Fällen waren Austausch--Korrelationseffekte signifikant. Weiterhin wurde die Änderung der kritischen Temperatur der Bose-Einstein-Kondensation aufgrund der Boson-Fermion-Wechselwirkung berechnet. Verursacht wird dieser Effekt von Dichtumverteilungen aufgrund der Wechselwirkung.<br /> <br /> Dann wurden Boson-Fermion Gemische in optischen Gittern betrachtet. Ein Stabilitätskriterium gegen Phasenentmischung wurde gefunden und es ließen sich Bedingungen für einen supraflüssig zu Mott-isolations Phasenübergang angeben. Diese wurden sowohl mittels einer Molekularfeldrechnung als auch numerisch im Rahmen eines Gutzwilleransatzes gefunden. Es wurden weiterhin neuartige frustrierte Grundzustände im Fall von sehr großen Gitterstärken gefunden.<br>The theory of atomic Boson-Fermion mixtures in the dilute limit beyond mean-field is considered in this thesis.<br /> Extending the formalism of quantum field theory we derived expressions for the quasi-particle excitation spectra, the ground state energy, and related quantities for a homogenous system to first order in the dilute gas parameter.<br /> <br /> In the framework of density functional theory we could carry over the previous results to inhomogeneous systems. We then determined to density distributions for various parameter values and identified three different phase regions: <br /> (i) a stable mixed regime, <br /> (ii) a phase separated regime, and <br /> (iii) a collapsed regime. <br /> <br /> We found a significant contribution of exchange-correlation effects in the latter case. Next, we determined the shift of the Bose-Einstein condensation temperature caused by Boson-Fermion interactions in a harmonic trap due to redistribution of the density profiles.<br /> <br /> We then considered Boson-Fermion mixtures in optical lattices. We calculated the criterion for stability against phase separation, identified the Mott-insulating and superfluid regimes both, analytically within a mean-field calculation, and numerically by virtue of a Gutzwiller Ansatz. Au cours de cette thèse, j'ai participé au montage complet d'une expérience visant à refroidir et manipuler deux espèces atomiques alcalines fermioniques, 6Li et 40K. Le dispositif expérimental a pour objectifs l'étude des mélanges de fermions ultra-froids de masses différentes et la réalisation d'un simulateur analogique quantique versatile. Lors de sa conception, nous avons assemblé une enceinte à ultra-vide, réalisé un système laser stabilisé complet pour chaque espèce et mis en place deux sources atomiques performantes, un ralentisseur Zeeman de 6Li et un piège magnéto-optique bidimensionnel de 40K; la plupart des grandeurs optiques et électriques ainsi que les diagnostiques d'imagerie étant contrôlés par voie informatique. Ces premières étapes ont permis l'obtention d'un piège magnéto-optique à deux espèces performant, contenant typiquement 5x10^9 atomes de 6Li et 8x10^9 atomes de 40K. Dans cette configuration, nous avons produit les premières molécules hétéronucléaires de 6Li40K* par photo-association, pour lesquelles nous avons observé et identifié 70 raies rovibrationnelles. Dans une seconde partie, je décris en détail le transport magnétique du mélange atomique entre la cellule du piège magnéto-optique et une cellule d'expérience, où règne un vide poussé et bénéficiant d'un grand accès optique. Ce dispositif complet, de sa conception à son optimisation expérimentale, en passant par son assemblage mécanique et la mise en place de diagnostiques numériques, fait partie intégrante de mon travail. Son efficacité a pu être testée et optimisée, permettant ainsi un transfert performant du mélange vers la cellule finale

Un des principaux objectifs de la physique fondamentale est d'unifier la relativité générale, qui décrit les phénomènes macroscopiques régis par l'influence de la gravité, à la mécanique quantique, qui se concentre sur les effets à l'échelle microscopique. Les ensembles d'atomes froids, en tant qu'objets massifs quantiques, se trouvent au croisement de ces deux théories et paraissent comme des sujets de tests idéaux. Ils peuvent être utilisés pour tester des théories qui postulent une violation des principes d'équivalence d'Einstein et en particulier une violation de l'universalité de la chute libre (UFF).Des propositions récentes suggèrent d'utiliser des mélanges de condensats de Bose-Einstein (BEC) comme sources d'interféromètres atomiques de précision pour implémenter des tests UFF. Ces expériences ont le potentiel d'atteindre et même de dépasser la précision des meilleurs tests réalisés avec des masses classiques durant la mission MICROSCOPE. L'exécution d'expériences en microgravité permet des temps d'interrogation plus longs, améliorant par conséquent les performances des capteurs à ondes de matière. Pour optimiser l'implémentation des tests UFF, il est nécessaire d'avoir un contrôle parfait des atomes dû aux exigences strictes sur le budget d'erreurs. Dans ce travail, nous nous concentrons sur la conception d'états d'entrée avec un contrôle en position et vitesse des nuages d'atomes, ainsi que leurs évolutions en taille.Les expériences étudiées ici sont conçues avec des montages avec puce atomique qui manipulent les atomes à l'aide de pièges magnétiques. La plupart des applications présentées sont des expériences réalisées dans le Cold Atom Laboratory (CAL) de la NASA à bord de la Station Spatiale Internationale dans le cadre du Consortium for Ultracold Atoms in Space. Cette machine à BEC multi-utilisateur permet la manipulation de BEC simple-espèce à son installation ainsi que celle de mélanges de BEC double-espèces après des améliorations. En suivant cette chronologie, nous étudions d'abord la dynamique de BEC simple-espèce puis étendons ce travail à la manipulation d'un mélange de deux BECs en interaction. La première étape après la calibration du modèle à puce est de concevoir un transport rapide et robuste pour éloigner les atomes de la puce. Nous présentons et utilisons un protocole de raccourci à l'adiabaticité sur la base de rétro-ingénierie, pour transporter le BEC et atteindre les exigences sur le contrôle de la position et vitesse finale. L'expansion libre du nuage atomique avec la chute inhérente de densité rend la détection du signal difficile. Par analogie avec la lumière, il est possible de collimater le nuage atomique avec une lentille atomique à l'aide de la technique de Delta-Kick Collimation. Les applications à CAL ont abouti à des énergies d'expansion de l'ordre de la dizaine de pK. Pour simuler le processus d'imagerie et soutenir l'analyse de données, des modèles théoriques qui prennent en compte les effets de résolution de la caméra et les changements de repères associés à l'orientation de la caméra ou l'orientation du potentiel de piégeage par rapport à la puce atomique sont présentés.L'espace permet la manipulation de mélanges de condensats de Bose-Einstein sous des conditions de miscibilité impossibles à obtenir au sol. La colocation des centres des pièges pour les différentes espèces en microgravité peut mener à des topologies différentes de l'état fondamental du piège. De plus, l'énergie d'interaction entre les espèces peut jouer un rôle significatif dans la dynamique du mélange lors de son transport. Cependant, la simulation de la dynamique de mélanges de BEC double-espèces en interaction est un défi sur le plan des ressources informatiques, surtout à cause des longues durées d'expansion. Dans ce travail, des méthodes de mise à l'échelle pour dépasser ces limitations sont présentées et illustrées dans des cas d'expériences dans l'espace dans CAL et à bord de fusées-sondes<br>One of the major goals of fundamental physics is to unify general relativity, which describes macroscopic phenomena driven by the influence of gravity, with quantum mechanics, which focuses on effects at microscopic scales. Ensembles of cold atoms, as massive quantum objects, lie at the crossroads of both theories and appear as a test object of choice. They can be used to test theories that postulate a violation of Einstein's Equivalence Principles, in particular a violation of the Universality of Free Fall (UFF).Recent proposals suggest using mixtures of Bose-Einstein condensates (BEC) as sources for precision atom interferometry to perform UFF. These have the potential to match the precision of the best tests with classical test masses performed during the MICROSCOPE mission, and may even provide better results in the long term. The realization of experiments in microgravity, where atoms can float for long periods of time, allows longer interrogation times, thus increasing the performance of matter-wave sensors. To optimize the implementation of UFF tests, one needs exquisite control of the atoms due to stringent requirements on the error budget. In this work, we focus on the design of the input state with control over the position and velocity of the atom clouds, as well as their size evolution.The experiments studied here are designed with atom chip setups that manipulate atoms with magnetic traps. Most of the applications presented are experiments performed in the NASA Cold Atom Laboratory (CAL) aboard the International Space Station as part of the Consortium for Ultracold Atoms in Space (CUAS). This multi-user BEC machine allows the manipulation of single species BEC at its installation as well as dual species mixtures after upgrades. Following this chronology, we first study the dynamics of single species BEC and then extend the work to the manipulation of an interacting mixture of two BECs. The first step after calibrating the chip model is to design a fast and robust transport protocol to move the atoms away from the atom chip. We present and use a Shortcut-To-Adiabaticity (STA) protocol, based on reverse engineering, to transport the BEC and meet the requirements of position control at the sub- extmu m level and velocity control at the hundreds of extmu m/s level. The free expansion of the atom cloud with its inherent atomic density drop makes signal detection difficult. By analogy with light, it is possible to collimate the atom cloud with atomic lenses using the Delta-Kick Collimation (DKC) technique. Application to CAL resulted in expansion energies in the tens of pK level. To simulate the imaging process and to support the data analysis, theoretical models are presented that take into account the resolution effects of the camera and the frame transformations associated with the orientation of the camera or the orientation of the trapping potential with respect to the atom chip.Space allows the operation of Bose-Einstein condensate mixtures under miscibility conditions not possible on the ground. The colocation of the trap center for the different species in microgravity can lead to different topologies of the trap ground state. Moreover, the interaction energy between the species, which is almost negligible in the ground state, plays a significant role in the dynamics of the mixture during its transport. However, the simulation of the dynamics of interacting dual-species BEC mixtures is computationally challenging, particularly due to the long expansion times. In this work, scaling techniques to overcome these limitations are presented and illustrated in the case of space experiments in CAL and aboard sounding rockets. Such scaled-grid approaches make it possible to simulate long transports with free expansion times on the order of seconds, which would not be feasible with a fixed-grid approach on reasonable time scales, not to mention the problems of memory usage

This thesis reports the formation of a dual-species Bose-Einstein condensate of ⁸⁷Rb and ¹³³Cs in the same trapping potential. Quantum degenerate mixtures exhibit rich physics inaccessible to single species experiments and provide an ideal starting point for the creation of ultracold dipolar molecules. These molecules offer a wealth of new research avenues including precision metrology, quantum simulation and computation. The experimental method exploits the efficient sympathetic cooling of ¹³³Cs via elastic collisions with ⁸⁷Rb, initially in a magnetic quadrupole trap and subsequently in a levitated optical trap. Evaporative cooling in the dipole trap must compete against a high interspecies three-body inelastic collision rate ~ 10⁻²⁵ - 10⁻²⁶ cm⁶/s. The two condensates each contain up to 2 x 10⁴ atoms and exhibit a striking phase separation, revealing the mixture to be immiscible due to strong repulsive interspecies interactions. Sacrificing all the ⁸⁷Rb during the cooling leads to the creation of single-species ¹³³Cs condensates of up to 6 x 10⁴ atoms. In addition this thesis reports the observation of an interspecies Feshbach resonance at 181.7(5)G and the creation of a pure sample of Cs₂ molecules via magneto-association on the 4(g)4 resonance at 19.8 G. These results represent important steps towards the creation of ultracold polar RbCs molecules.

We have constructed a mode-locked optical parametric oscillator (OPO), synchronously pumped by the second harmonic of a continuously mode-locked Nd:YAG laser and based on type II phase matching in a KTP crystal. The two subharmonics (signal and idler waves) are nearly degenerate in frequency but are distinct orthogonal polarization states, and the oscillator is thus a nondegenerate OPO. Above threshold, the intensities of the signal and idler output beams should be highly correlated, as recently demonstrated for a similar single-frequency OPO.1 Ideally, the quantum noise on the corresponding photocurrent difference signal is completely suppressed for frequencies that are small compared to the OPO cavity bandwidth. Since this configuration produces intense light beams with potentially very good noise suppression, it is an important prototype for possible applications, e.g., to spectroscopy. Initial results with our OPO show an excess uncorrelated polarization noise, possibly due to depolarized light scattering in the KTP crystal. When the OPO cavity is stabilized with the signal and idler degenerate in frequency, they can be mixed to form a superposition by manipulating their polarization. When the oscillator is pumped below threshold, a pulsed squeezed vacuum state is produced in two such mixtures.2 When the polarizations are mixed inside the OPO cavity by a Faraday rotator, the backaction evasion necessary for a quantum nondemolition (QND) measurement of one of the field quadratures of an externally injected beam is obtained.3 The pulsed local oscillator used in observing the squeezing or QND effects is derived from the fundamental output of the pump laser. Progress in implementing these experiments with our mode-locked OPO is described as well as possible applications to time-domain measurements with noise below the shot-noise limit.
