Abstract Corrosion inhibitors provide a cost effective method for internal corrosion control of carbon and low alloy steel infrastructure within the oil and gas industry. The correct selection and validation of inhibitors is essential to ensure successful, safe and reliable operation of infrastructure. Despite a consensus from operators and chemical suppliers that the fundamental properties dictating inhibitor performance are largely understood, the reality is that an extremely complex relationship exists between the physical properties of surfactants, the environmental solution chemistry and

Abstract Despite the widespread use of corrosion inhibitors (CIs) in the oil and gas industry much of their complex aggregation and adsorption behavior is still very poorly understood. CIs are surface active species meaning that when they are injected into aqueous solutions they naturally aggregate and migrate to gas-liquid, liquid-liquid, and solid-liquid interfaces. A better understanding of each CI component and how it adsorbs when exposed to various surfaces could lead to improved CI design, higher performance at lower dosages, as well as improved methods for residual detection. Abstract It is recognised that chemical interactions between scale inhibitor (SI) and corrosion inhibitor (CI) result in a reduction in the performance efficiency of both chemicals. As reservoir production systems become ever more complex, the requirements for chemical compatibility become greater. This is a particular concern for satellite and deepwater fields in which several wells may be co-produced through very long subsea tie backs. In such systems, chemical / chemical performance compatibilities are essential. Previous work on the issue has mainly been limited to field specific studies w

Abstract Mineral scale deposition and pipeline corrosion are two of the most common challenges that require chemical treatment in oil wells. Combination products including scale inhibitor (SI), corrosion inhibitor (CI) packages, surfactants, and other chemical additives are well accepted as an integrated solution to flow assurance and asset integrity problems. In this work, a case study in the Permian Basin field demonstrates a certain type of combination product exhibiting lower performance than expected. The raw material interference on the scale inhibitors was investigated and presented wit

The complex glacial geomorphology of east-central Quebec and western Labrador has resulted in conflicting ice sheet reconstructions leaving many questions regarding the behaviour of large ice sheets within their inner regions. Specifically, the ice-flow chronology and subglacial conditions remain poorly constrained. To address this, surficial geology investigations were conducted across the border of Quebec and Labrador. A complex glacial history consisting of five ice-flow phases influenced by regional ice stream dynamics was identified, including a near-complete ice-flow reversal. During eac

Channel Island National Park (CHIS), incorporating five islands off the coast of southern California (Anacapa Island, San Miguel Island, Santa Barbara Island, Santa Cruz Island, and Santa Rosa Island), has an outstanding paleontological record. The park has significant fossils dating from the Late Cretaceous to the Holocene, representing organisms of the sea, the land, and the air. Highlights include: the famous pygmy mammoths that inhabited the conjoined northern islands during the late Pleistocene; the best fossil avifauna of any National Park Service (NPS) unit; intertwined paleontological

The Cache Valley region in northern Utah and southern Idaho contains and is surrounded by several large, hazardous faults which pose significant earthquake risk. The 40-mile-long (65 km) East Cache fault zone (ECFZ) and the 35-mile-long (56 km) West Cache fault zone (WCFZ) bound the Cache Valley graben and both show evidence of large surface-faulting earthquakes in the late Quaternary. Other hazardous faults in the Cache Valley region include the intrabasin Dayton-Oxford fault, the Mantua area faults within the Wellsville Mountains, and the James Peak fault at the very southern end of the ECFZ

Grand Canyon-Parashant National Monument (PARA) in northwestern Arizona has significant paleontological resources, which are recognized in the establishing presidential proclamation. Because of the challenges of working in this remote area, there has been little documentation of these resources over the years. PARA also has an unusual management situation which complicates resource management. The majority of PARA is administered by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM; this land is described here as PARA-BLM), while about 20% of the monument is administered by the National Park Service (NPS; th
