Full textThis study introduces to the life and the string quartets of the Greek composer Nikos Skalkottas (1904-1949). It comprises a critical biographical study of the composer and a brief presentation of the greek and german social-political and artistic environment in which he had been instructed and had lived as composer. However, the main thrust of the study is analytical and concerned with Skalkottas compositional procedures connected to atonality, twelve-note method and extended tonality. In addition to it, the study provides an examination of the treatment and adaptation of several compositional features (such as form, harmonic construction, rhythm, texture, timbre) within the context of his musical systems. Moreover, it demonstrates the particularities of his personal adaptation of those systems in relation to the context of the Second Viennese School and the influences issued from musical genres outside the occidental tradition. This study aims at a global appreciation and comprehension of his music

Full textIn order to revive the string quartet in France, a much appreciated genre during the second half of the age of enlightment, two projects have been carried out. Firstly a thematic catalogue of the literature of the genre published between 1750 and 1800 by forty-nine publishers, together with sixteen composers who published their own work. This catalogue allows an assessment of the quantitative importance and an evaluation of the musical interest of that literature inspired by the works of one hundred and ninety three composers. (cf. Repertoire thematique, vol. II, III, IV, V, and documents, vol. VII). The second project consists in a historical study centered on the musical milieu of the aristocratic salons, the various European schools, the prominent composers, the publishing activity and repertoire of the time. (cf. Etude historique, vol. I ; annexes, vol. VI ; partitions reconstituees, vol. VIII). The conclusions prove the existence and specificity of a string quartet French school, whose influence was to favor a growing appreciation of instrumental music on the eve of romanticism. They also lead to an understanding of the mutually enriching influences of the diverse European schools published in France, which participated in the shaping of an international style. Therefore, does the string quartet in France during the second half of the age of enlightment correspond to a French or a to a cosmopolitan art?

Full textAnton Reicha’s numerous theoretical writings are well-known in musicology today. Though Reicha is seen as a central theorist of the 19th century, his proper music nevertheless remains largely unknown. This PhD dissertation studies Reicha’s twenty string quartets published during his lifetime – which up to now have not been investigated in depth. The first eight quartets were published in 1804-1805 during Reicha’s stay in Vienna, whereas the last twelve were published in the 1820’s, after the composer settled in Paris: that is, they were published during a period lasting from Haydn’s last quartets to Beethoven’s last quartets. As a consequence, these quartets represent a corpus of particular relevance of knowledge of Reicha’s musical work, as well as for the history of this genre in the 19th century. This PhD dissertation, based on both an aesthetic and an analytical approach, creates a critical edition of Reicha’s quartets. This study starts by shedding light on the aesthetic premises of Reicha’s theoretical work and then analyses intertextual phenomena between his quartets and some of Haydn’s and Mozart’s works. Eventually it examines the composition process of Reicha’s quartets in the light of late 18th-century theoretical writings. The study of the constants and the variations of style between the early 19th-century “Vienna quartets” and the 1820’s “Paris quartets” is at the core of this study. The systematic comparison between the Reicha’s corpus and a counter-corpus made of quartets by Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Onslow and Cherubini helps situating Reicha as regarding his claimed Vienna legacy, but also as regarding French musician from the “Restauration” era

Full textDespite the notoriety of Gabriel Fauré’s musical style, the particular style of his chamber music still remains difficult to comprehend by analysis. Formal construction is a real subject of question. While some analysts try to attest to his originality by examining how it departs from tradition, others offer analyses of the dynamic characteristic of its themes, whose continuous development leads to the realization of large form. The latter have so far relied on a limited corpus of works. This thesis proposes to expand the corpus to the five large chamber works for strings and piano - two Quartets op. 15 and 45, two Quintets op. 89 and 115 and the Trio op. 120 in order to define the “formal dynamics.” After the study of testimonies from the composer's time that highlights the formal originality in his work, the subsequent analysis deals with the internal arrangement of themes and the realization of large form from the study of scores. I conduct my analysis with the help of graphic representation created by a computer software that can visualize the enveloping dynamic and identify climaxes. By revealing the contents of this process, this thesis helps to better reflect the very personal style of Fauré and the way in which he creates music that gives the impression of continuous progression and development extending to the end of the work
