Full textThe protestant revival in the french-speaking community in quebec in the 1830's unsettled the linguistic and religious opposition between french-speaking catholic canadians and a population which was mainly english-speaking and protestant. Our research has focused on determining the causes and analysing the mechanisms that led this ambitious missionary project to ist eventual failure. The missionary work set our at the start under excellent circumstances since the most favourable conditions for success seemed to be present (the fervour of european proselytes, the support of civilian and religious english-speaking authorities, the weakening or the catholic faith in the french-speaking population). From 1834 to 1860, the five missionary organisations (the french canadian missionary society, the baptist, presbyterian and methodist societies) directed their efforts to colportage, the setting up of missionary stations and education. Yet, these often competing activities greatly reduced their actual efficiency and fueled the spiritual revival of the catholic church. From 1861 to 1880, the evangelization movement moved further and further from its european ties and diversified its activities. In quebec, ultramontanism grew stronger and, banned from their community, quite a number of converts adoptent the english language. Assimilation was brough about either suddenly for those who chose exile or progressively for those who stayed in the province. From 1881 to 1925, four churches (presbyterians, baptists, anglicans, methodists) shared the leadership of the movement which slowly lost strengh. The same churches more and more questioned the relevance of their commitment. In 1925, the anglicans, the baptists and the new united church

Full textThis study explores the modalities of the experience of the Good Shepherd Sisters of Quebec as they adapted to the Quiet Revolution and to the Second Vatican Council between 1960 and 1981. In addition to the wide social services they offered to women and to the poor in Quebec, Africa and Latin America, the sisters of the community have also been involved in education since the 1850s. While the Catholic Church was losing its legitimacy in society and its authority in the education field in the 1960s, the community initiated its renewal. Leaning on the Council's principles for the realization of the aggiornamento, and leveraging the legislative power of the general chapters, the community decentralized its government by increasing the autonomy of the sisters and empowering them. This investigation into the different versions of the constitutional documents of the community showed that those participative principles were the object of multiple tensions and debates within the community during the decades of 1960 and 1970. The decisions of the general chapters on these matters finally led to a more individual way of living the spiritual and community life. When the education system authority passed from the Catholic Church to the Quebec government in the 1960s, with the secularization of the society, the Good Shepherd Sisters needed to review their apostolic work in education. In response to the marginalization of the sisters in schools and to the decline of the community, the authorities relied on the individual initiatives and ensured the sisters' well-being in order to keep the community and its educational engagements alive. As the sisters were encouraged to go back to school and to specialize in the field of their choice, the community allowed some empowerment to the individuals, who could either continue their educational work or reorient in another apostolic sector, while respecting their vows of obedience and the community hierarchy. The exploration of the collective and individual adaptation experience of the Good Shepherd Sisters of Quebec increases the comprehension of the ambiguous relation between autonomy and obedience in a religious community.

Full textIn a book published in 2014, Marie-Claude Rocher signs an introduction where it is stated that after the Conquest some French Protestants practiced a discreet cult in the Province of Quebec. In the preface of the same book, Philippe Joutard invites young researchers to study the hypothesis of a "Huguenot Marranism" in North America. Before 2014, no historian had advanced as far as these two, the idea of continuity in Quebec between Protestants in New France and Protestantism in the 19th century This new concept of "Huguenot Marranism" had never been the subject of a research project. It was therefore necessary to start there. Of an essentially historiographical nature, this study attempts to shed light on how the "Huguenot Marranism" thesis was formed while also assessing the plausibility of the thesis. In addition to a historiographic look at Quebec Protestantism from New France to the beginning of the 20th century, this study opts for a comparison of the thesis of "Huguenot Marranism" with the phenomena of underground religiosity that have been Jewish Marranism, the Waldensians, and French Protestantism.

Full textIn this doctoral thesis we examine the problem of the transformations taking place in church art in the Catholic parishes in Quebec. After enjoying a lengthy heyday, this artistic tradition is now in a state of mutation not always easy to grasp. We need to take a methodical approach when placing the problem in its proper perspective, attempting to comprehend its nature and timelessness, and proposing suitable guidelines for finding a solution. Firstly, we can arrive at a reasonably accurate notion of the current state of church art in the Catholic parishes in Québec through a careful examination of the history of the sacred art committees in the Catholic dioceses of Québec, Montréal and Saint-Jean-Longueuil, which were on the front lines of the evolution of church art in their parishes after the Second Vatican Council, by examining the new observances in a few of these churches, and by taking an inventory of new constructions and partial transformations of parish churches in the most heavily populated dioceses. Secondly, using an appropriate theoretical system, in order to assess the possibility for this art to integrate elements of living culture and keeping in mind what we have learned from almost two millenia of church art, we can conclude that the relationship between this artistic tradition and its present evolution in Québec is less problematic than it appears. In spite of the conspicious drop in orders for religious art objects in the years following the Council, church art survives in the public domain thanks to the interest in this area of our heritage on the part of many citizens. Consequently, this artistic tradition survives in an original way, and will continue to evolve.

Full textWhat future for the religious congregations in Quebec ? Such a question invites us to look into the socio-historical evolution of religious women communities in Quebec, since the 60's, along with the « Révolution tranquille » and the Vatican II aggiornamento. A major transition occurs inside a decomposition recomposition process of a whole society entity affected in its morphology, structure, culture and psychosociological dynamism. A case study allows the analysis of the decomposition recomposition process of those groups based on the organizational life cycle concept of one arrived at a critical point where the issue is a paradigmatic change or the group extinction. This transition dynamics gives rise to a confused and destabilized situation from which could emerge the creation of a new life style, the institute refounding and the whole religious life renewal.

Full textThe goal of this research is to study how the church of Quebec received the teaching of Vatican II on the synodality of the local church. An examination of reception as such provides the methodological foundation of the study. The second part presents the theology of the local church articulated by Vatican II (a communion of persons of different conditions and functions); studies the source of its "order" (its synodality); elaborates a heuristic model of its functioning (the celebration of the Eucharist) and exposes the institutional forms presented by the codex of 1983 for the practical implementation of this synodal right. The third major section presents the church of Quebec as a subject of reception. A social-historical study of this local church is followed by a highly detailed analysis of the way this church is governed between 1982 and 1987. It is on the basis of these considerations that the reception of the teaching of Vatican in the Quebec’s diocese is interpreted

By exposing how closely related society and the religious community are, the present case study explores the dynamics surrounding the land tenancy and the development of the buildings forming the monastery of the Ursulines of Three-Rivers. Today, the future threatens the survival of their heritage and this issue is a common one for many religious communities in the province of Quebec : the conversion and change of purpose begs the question as to what parts of their heritage must be preserved. By studying the structuring role of this Catholic institution in the formation of the urban cultural landscape of Three-Rivers, the research will undeniably contribute to understanding the processes of the urban morphology of Quebec. The study will attempt to establish guidelines for a possible future requalification of the site and a likely change of use for the buildings following the decline ofthe religious community. Inspired by the diachronic methodology and the analytical approaches created by Saverio Muratori and the Italian school of urban morphology, the research exposes the morphology of their estate and their monastery. The morphology of the building, the site and the city exposes periods of continuity and rupture through time (construction/demolition, fires/reconstruction, expansion, etc.). The case study seeks to describe and understand how the land and properties supported the development of nuns’ monastery missions and affected the urbanization of their surroundings. The research explores how the amount of support through cash, resources and other means for the building of the Ursulines’ Monastery and the maintenance of their educational and charitable missions is directly tied to the number of deeds and the material transformations of the Ursuline’s properties in the city and the countryside. Is there a relation between the community’s resources fluctuation and the evolution of their estate? The initial research question foresees the existence of a dynamic interaction between the resources of the community, the development of their estate and the evolution of a part of the city. The exchanges represented by the deeds on the Ursulines’estate structure the production of space. An interdisciplinary approach is inevitable as architecture, history, and geography are closely related disciplines. Subsequently, material evidence is used to make a qualitative assessment aiming to contribute to the operational history. This study method provides an opportunity to reflect on the heritage of religious communities and the feasibility of hypothetical projects using research knowledge as well as sound architectural reasoning. Indeed, the evolution of the site will reflect of the local will, between enlightened and informed preservation or progressive disappearing.

Full textThe Catholic Church states that any Christian initiation should take as a model the process proposed for adults : the catechumenate. This thesis first situates the issue of Christian initiation in Québec today. It proposes an analysis of the different concepts involved, including the concept of “model”. Then, going through the history of the catechumenate in order to show the links between the main principles of the catechumenate of the first centuries and those that guided its restoration by the Second Vatican Council, it underlines the essential elements of a catechumenal process, and thus what should be present in every initiation process. A sociological reflection follows, examining the admissibility within today’s socioreligious context, of a new Christian initiation process. This leads to the formulation of some propositions concerning the global structure and the guiding principles of a renewed process for Christian initiation that would be clearly inspired by the essential elements of the catechumenate.

Full textThis dissertation offers elements of a response to the question of "how to organize church in small rural parishes today. " Three periods in the history of parochial networking in the diocese of Rimouski are first identified and analyzed. In the periods from 1867-1891 and 1928-1950, we find two different dynamics which lead to the foundation of small parishes in the rural milieu: the recognition of a stable community and the support for a colonization effort in the context of economic crisis. The period from 1968-2000 presents, on the other hand, a dynamic of struggle for the survival of small parishes faced with diminishing populations. In each instance, the ideal of Christian society is sought within the framework of parish. Three ecclesiological marks are identified in view of reshaping parishes. These three marks-structured communion, fraternity-solidarity, hope-involvement-reveal much about Christian life in a parochial milieu and are suggestive of a new and motivating pastoral project

Full textThe Quebec Jesuits were given the Chinese mission of Xuzhou by the Holy See in 1931. They were supported by many French Canadian donors convinced of the importance of missionary causes. A museum of Chinese arts and the missionary review Le Brigand were the principal publicity of their activities in China. From June 1931 to August 1950, more than 1.1 million of Canadian dollars were given to the Church of Xuzhou by the Procure des Missions Étrangères de Chine, a Jesuit institution founded at Quebec to fund the mission. Poverty, climate instability and political insecurity maintained the Catholic community of Xuzhou in a state of dependence towards the French Canadian Church's generosity. Prioritizing the financing of the schools of the Church of Xuzhou, the Quebec Jesuits trained few Chinese priests before their exile of China by the Chinese Communist Party, starting in 1949.

The challenges of this new reality has led to the use of intervention approaches in an intercultural context that favour the development of a greater cultural sensitivity and the appropriation of strategies to overcome obstacles to understanding and collaborating between social stakeholders and those assisted. However, these approaches do little or do not address the religious or spiritual aspect, which can sometimes be a major part of the newcomer’s identity. While Canadian policies emphasize the need to consider the religious dimension, the current dominant view of this reality is yet to marginalize this aspect of the identity of newcomers. This characterizes the reality of the Muslim population who is held in fear because of public prejudice. Considering the previous findings and given the limited data available on this subject in the city of Quebec, this qualitative research seeks to explore and obtain a better understanding of the perspectives of eight Muslim immigrants regarding whether or not their religious identity is taken into consideration during services they receive or have received in the past by social workers. Throughout the use of the intercultural systemic approach, the data collected during the interviews made it possible to highlight diverse experiences regarding the way in which the religious is received in context of the aid relationship. It also made it possible to describe the social and political context in which this project is situated and the impact that this context has on the daily experience of the respondents. Key words: immigration, islam, identity, social intervention, intercultural approach, systemicapproach, qualitative research.
