Full textEvery year since the early 2000s, about 3,500 French citizens settled in Quebec under a permanent resident visa. The French citizens are immigrants of choice for Quebec, since their income revenues are in fact higher than the national average income, and they also benefit, since 2008, from a greater recognition of their diplomas obtained in France. In fact, French candidates seem to gather all the conditions to settle and integrate in a sustainable manner in the “Belle Province”. However, the studied phenomenon - namely the return in France of the French immigrants - is not so new. Indeed, in 2013 according to the Ministry of Immigration and Cultural Communities, France is the leading country of birth for recent immigrants (economical sector) in admissions. Nevertheless, French immigrants are also the most likely to return to France or to continue on their migration route. The communication and intercultural relations during the pre-migratory phase can influence the future immigrants to either settle temporarily or permanently. But how can this intercultural communication influence future immigrants about their desire to migrate, prepare their migration plans, and their integration? What may be the influence of this intercultural communication within the integration process and the development of a sense of belonging towards the host society? The progressive construction of the Promised Land and the migration imaginary also determine either the success or failure of immigration

Full textThe Breton migration to the American continent is noticeable considering its number and its continuity. According to Le Clech, pioneer and specialist of the Breton migration, 55 000 Breton people have emigrated to the USA and 45 000 to Canada between 1880 and 1970. Some studies were carried out in France and Canada, by historians, which described the repeated arrivals of Breton people in North America, the reasons or factors for their migration, the places for their settlement and their social and professional reintegration. Nevertheless, these studies are more focused on the migration to the USA, while they are nearly the same number of Breton migrants in Canada. The originality of my research lies in the chosen field of observation, which is the province of Quebec, Canada. Lndeed, the French Canadian who live there, as called today Quebecois, are a minority group who was subjected similare pressure toward their language and culture as the Breton people. Consequently, this field appeared to be pertinent to analyse the relations established between the migrants and this minority group. On the other hand, what interested me in the study of the migration of the Bretons was the discovery of the way their sentiment to belonging to the regional Breton culture, in other word their “Bretonness”, was taken from the territory of origin and relocated in the destination country. I consider therefore the migration as an experimental situation, through which I tried to analyse how a cultural belonging is unbuilt, rebuilt or built. In other words, why and how some Breton migrants in Quebec express, promote, or even recreate their cultural belonging 6000 km far from their territory of birth territory? This research allowed me to throw light of course the different expressions of cultrural belonging in a situation of geographical mobility. It also allowed me to contribute to the knowledge and the understanding of the belonging to other cultural communities and therefore to participate in enriching theknowledge in the field anthropology and ethnology of migrations

Full textThis specifically-tailored Master's degree in art and anthropology experiments with an interdisciplinary combination of analytic research and aesthetic experience, culminating in both a written thesis and a video installation. It takes a look at individual and collective senses of belonging among groups of people in two territories: Quebec and New Caledonia. This project explores the general challenges of “imagining oneself together”, going beyond differing origins and life horizons within (post)colonial societies. Through semi-directive interviews, and interviews mobilizing original audiovisual footage, this project permits encounters between individuals from New Caledonia who studied in Quebec in mining-related programs on the one hand, and persons originally from Quebec who worked in New Caledonia’s mines on the other hand. The audiovisual interviews, known as “landscape takes”, create an imaginative space which allows participants to situate themselves. It allows participants to co-inhabit these spaces while listening to and repeating the landscape takes of other participants. Through audiovisual editing of filmed sequences, and through the creation of a videographic installation, I have explored the singular and shareable dimension of these identities. I look at sensory and relational dimensions, but also temporal dimensions relative to identitarian processes and dynamics of collective belonging. I also take interest in the way in which these senses of belonging and identitarian process involve, or do not, a national reference.

Full textBecause of the region’s topography and of its economic activities – more particularly those related to the fisheries, the distribution of the population in Gaspésie, characterized by an ethnocultural diversity, is mainly structured on the coast of the peninsula. According to existing literature, communication issues have led the Gaspesians to develop in isolation. The study of the demographic evolution of Gaspésie, the sociability relations and the migratory trajectories of the inhabitants of sampled localities from the 19th century until 1940 is observed in three sub-regions: Haute-Gaspésie, Côte-de-Gaspé and Baie-des-Chaleurs. Migratory trajectories are subjected to the peculiarities of the territory, each locality maintaining relationships with specific regions, often to the detriment of other Gaspesian sub-regions. There exists an important distance between the sub-regions, contributing to the slowness with which a regional identity was forged. Keywords: Gaspésie, migration, settlement, isolation, mobility, ethnocultural diversity

This research stemmed from the will to understand whether sponsorship immigration laws had an impact on relationships between men and women who chose to immigrate through this channel. At first glance, this law facilitating family reunification for permanent residents or citizens can seem positive, especially for women. The accounts of the ten women who took part in my research demonstrate that on the contrary, the situation is extremely complex and sometimes leads to diverse forms of violence. It also contributes to the creation of asymmetric relationships and inequalities among couples. The semi-directed interviews conducted with sponsored immigrant women living in Québec City clearly show that this immigration procedure has its own particularities, and that its effects on the subjects’ lives are not just positive.

Full textBetween 1965 and 1975, the Franco-Quebec cooperation allowed migration in Montreal and Quebec, several thousand French, employed as a secondary school teacher and university. Since 1990, Qebec's immigration policy actively conducts an increase in French entries on the provincial territory. Of French migrants less specialized professional than previous but more numerous, currently 120,000, are the first national group to migrate to China and Algeria. Our anthropological study of French migrants in Montreal required a redefinition of the field of migration studies. Transatlantic situation and "post-colonial" makes us think about multiple identities that are told in the speeches of French and Qebecers. Being an immigrant, for French in Montreal, is to confront the local representation of the migrant. Inherited differing figures of a pedagogy and a national historical narrative built locally. Full textAlthough research on immigration has flourished in the social sciences with the work of ethnologists, sociologists, geographers, demographers, historians and economists, it has long been fragmented. Furthermore, it has focused primarily on the male immigrant and is burdened with stereotypes. Structural adjustment programs, implemented in the mid 1980s in Senegal, concomitant with the "modou modou" phenomenon, have led to the appearance of a new category of emigrants (skilled professionals and women) and have transformed the context of international migration from Senegal. Since the, Senegalese migration has varied in its origin, its destination, its composition and its philosophy. The immigration of Senegalese skilled professionals in France and North America altered the classic economic paradigms that quite naturally relegated unskilled jobs to the working class. Illegal immigration, even when it concerns skilled persons, provokes a downward shift in status, synonumous with the loss of professional qualifications, and often leads to a precarious existence. To establish a parallel between skilled migration and precariousness may appear incongrous, in as much as skilled emigrants from countries in the South - the result of the "brain drain" - were always considered to be immigrants who occupy posts of high responsability in the large firms of the North, thus depriving their countries of origin of their skills. This thesis proposes to systematically examine all aspects of the reality o Senegalese international emigration and show that skilled emigration is the prerogative of both sexe

With recent Canadian and Quebec policies aiming to capitalize on immigration, the present research targets migrant students enrolled in a regional college located in the Province of Québec. The basic premise of this paper is that beyond external forces and constraints, each individual has a unique and singular migratory experience. Through the analysis of these personal experiences, the following research aims to better understand the underlying processes of this relative and evolutionary migration movement brought about by globalization. Young foreign-born adults registered in a technical program at the Institut maritime du Québec in Rimouski were interviewed regarding their mobility and cross-cultural experiences through different themes such as : migration motivations, factors relating to choice of destination, culture shocks, relationships, academic experience, coping strategies, effects of migration, sense of integration and belonging, perception of the host community and projects evolution. The results of this case study highlight important avenues of reflection on the experience of migrant students in regional areas and question the concordance between governmental strategies and individual logic and projects.

Full textThis research addresses the question of socio-professional insertion of immigrant women coming from the French-speaking West Africa, considered through their pre-migration experiences. This study describes precisely the reality of skilled (or qualified) immigrant women before, during and after the process of immigration and their socio-professional integration in Quebec City. Socio-demographic characteristics were used to collect information on participants and complete the portrait of their reality. This study is meant to be descriptive and qualitative. The topic of this research was selected for study in view of completing a lack of work on visible minority, particularly immigrant women from the French-speaking West Africa. Above all, it was an opportunity to explore the complexity of their socio-professional integration. This qualitative descriptive study using a symbolic interactionism perspective was employed in order to analyse the social phenomena of the immigrant women’s socio-professional integration. Moreover, this view allows to underline the interaction of the women with the host society. The human capital theory is added to give an overview about their abilities and skills. After ten semi-structured interviews, the results of this research conclude and highlight the socio-professional capital of women coming from the French-speaking West-Africa before landing to Canada, their post-migration experience and finally the impact of it as a factor on their future projects and socio-professional integration. Nonetheless, the pre-migration experience does not appear as having an influence on their social integration but could be useful in the case of resumption of academic studies.

We sought to answer these questions by comparing three forms of secondary socialization- marital, professional and patriotic- within the Kabyle migrants currently resident in the cities of Strasbourg and Montreal. The comparison of these forms of socialization seeks to scrutinise the motivations of a generation which left its homeland in search of new identities elsewhere

This thesis constitutes an analysis of intervention practices used with immigrant women victims of domestic violence (IWVDV) in shelters. The purpose of the research was to adopt an intersectional approach to explore how shelter workers in the Province of Quebec assessand choose to intervene in situations affecting IWVDV. Data collection was carried out using five focus groups and one clinical vignette to explore the different viewpoints of 33 shelterworkers in women’s shelters in four regions in the Province of Quebec (Montreal, Gatineau, Quebec City and Sherbrooke) regarding their experiences with IWVDV and their choices of intervention practices used with these women. A thematic content analysis enabled us to identify two discourses in the shelter workers regarding their experiences with IWVDV: one discourse centered on homogeneity and the other, on heterogeneity. Less present than the second, the first discourse tended to homogenize shelter workers’ views of the IWVDV’s experiences. This tendency can be explained by an essentialism gender-based view of women’s experiences. Feminist intervention in domestic violence—which is centered on the victimization of women and the domination of men and which is widely used in women’s shelters—is one explanation for the homogeneous vision among the shelter workers we met with. Our research also highlights both the positive and limiting aspects of this type of discourse. The second discourse puts more emphasis on the diversity and heterogeneity of the IWVDV. This heterogeneity can be seen as a consequence of structural oppression (laws, social policies, racism, discrimination, non-recognition of credentials), both in the countries of origin and in the host country. Our research helped us to identify in the shelter workers’ discourse a perception that the IWVDVwere more vulnerable to domestic violence. This vulnerability, according to the shelter workers, would seem to be the result of multiple forms of oppression stemming from the families, religious beliefs and cultural communities. The present thesis thus addresses issues arising from this type of discourse. Although the second discourse illustrates the complexity of the analysis carried out by the shelter workers regarding the IWVDV’s situation, this discourse remains somewhat disorganized. In terms of the shelter workers’ viewpoints about their interventions, our analysis enabled us to identify three main themes on which their discourse primarily focused: 1) the characteristics of an intervention in an intercultural context, 2) the factors affecting practices in an intercultural context, and 3) the challenges in addressing women’s empowerment. We discovered that the shelter workers recognized the different needs of the IWVDV regarding their different cultural belongings and their multiple social roles. According to the shelter workers, different strategies, particularly collective approaches, made it possible to integrate the cultural and religious dimensions of these belongings, and thereby encourage inclusion, respect, justice, and solidarity among women. A variety of factors influenced the practices adopted in intercultural contexts, in particular the language spoken, the social position, the immigrants’ status, and their immigration experience. The shelter workers were particularly concerned by the issue of empowerment in IWVDV. While the issue of “mothering” was recognized as a widespread practice when shelter workers intervened with women in this group, these same workers tended to be critical of this approach. The defense of immigrant women’s rights was also an approach widely used by the shelter workers to further the BIW’s empowerment. Regarding the adoption of an IP in interventions with IWVDV in shelters, we are able to conclude that this approach encourages inclusive practices because it takes into account a range of systems of oppression which interact in IWVDV’s lives. This perspective opens up opportunities for developing practices that draw on both micro and macro aspects—in particular, women’s identity and structural aspects—as well as reflexive practices. Use of Patricia Hill Collins’s evaluation grid shed new light on how the IP can be used in analyzing the shelter workers’ experiences and practices when working with IWVDV in women’sshelters. The present thesis also takes into consideration some of the limitations of this perspective, particularly as regards the role that gender should play in domestic violence analysis and intervention. Further intervention avenues and research topics are also proposed.

Full textThis thesis analyzes the migration policy recruitment of skilled immigrants, led by the Canadian province of Quebec and the Brazilian community in this French-speaking province. For this, the concept of diaspora has been used as an analytical model of the formation of the immigrant community in a non-traditional installation area. Initially this work presents the history of this province and the development of thematic and linguistic migration and the role of migration policies that led to the autonomy of the province in the recruitment and selection of its economic immigrants using the points system. Then, the main characteristics of Brazilian communities in major country of installation are presented in order to place the issue of Brazilian emigration as a contemporary phenomenon. It is shown how, since the 1980s, this movement, previously residual, has become so prevalent in Brazilian culture. Then, the concept of diaspora is introduced to show the Brazilian emigration as a diaspora. Subsequently, this work presents, analyzes and discusses the migration of Brazilians under this prism through semi-structured interviews, with institutional and formal means, as well as non-institutional and informal to be here and there that are widely used. It highlights the role of virtual social networks in the process, in their migration history and the formation of community. It is shown that these Brazilians, when leaving their country, were looking for a certain quality of life and social guarantees that in Brazil they believed to be excluded

Full textOur research project, “What about Canada? The Changing Dynamics of the Indexing Theory: A Content Analysis ofThe Globe and Mailand The Toronto Star, ” is dealing with the theory of indexing in a Canadian context. Therefore, the main problem illustrated by Bennett and Pfetsch (2018) is that indexing theory removes “alternative voices, ” instead of including these “new” voices in order to balance the sources. In this new fractured environment, it is more complex than before to balance different perspectives and opinions because of the involvement of different actors in the political arena. The main argument of this thesis is that it is imperative totest the theory of indexation and to adapt its central elements to the new political environment. This means an inclusion of this new environment to the basic assumptions that will include alternative narratives. It is in this context that we decided to analyze the issue of immigration policies in Canada and its indexing by the media. Consequently, this thesis is devoted to an analysis of the relationship between the media and official political authorities in Canada, in particular, by addressing the question of the place of alternative narratives in Canadian journalistic discourse.

Full textFor several decades, the Eastern Quebec regions have been experiencing accelerated population aging and depopulation through youth migration to Quebec’s major metropolitan centers (Mathews 1996, Morin, 2013). However, since 2002, the MRC of Avignon and Bonaventure on the Gaspé Coast have experienced a reduction in their annual population deficit, culminating for the 2008-2012 period by migratory gains and population growth (ISQ, 2016). In the wake of work on the development of the regions of Quebec (Jean, 1997, Polèse, 2009, Proulx, 2011), this memoir takes an original look at new trends in the occupation of a "rural", "peripheral" and "resource" territory. This master thesis presents a study of social representations (Abric, 2001) of migration, integration and regional development among young natives of Avignon and Bonaventure who have remained in their home environment, among others who have returned from migration and newcomers from metropolitan areas. The results of the analysis suggests that the metropolitan experience (Simmel, 2013) and the sharing of the social memory (Halbwachs, 1970) of the place are decisive in the construction of representations. The representations that emerge from the migrants' discourse are those of an environment enriched by urbanity distinct from that of the cities, of an integration confronted with the mutual acquaintance of the host community and of a worried optimism of development, prompted by projects in the primary sector that deteriorate the idealized territory of their migration project. Their representations of life in the two MRC’s were compared to those of a native youth group for whom this space is judged to be declining and dependent on a natural resource economy. This study highlights the cohabitation of groups that now share the same space without necessarily meeting and sharing the same aspirations for its future. This phenomenon contributes to the increase of a social mix in the environment and to a "metropolisation" of this regional subassembly.

Full textA perceived opportunity for economic improvement can be identified as the primary cause provoked by development differentials on a regional scale. Quebec's economic history--distinguished by the dual development of industry and agriculture, as well as relative overpopulation, sustained by a religious ideology pertaining to ruralism and favouring an increasing birthrate--reveals delays which accelerate the incidence of out-migration. By contrast, rapid industrialization of Ontario, exploitation of natural resources, settlement by immigration and colonization of the North were inducement factors for the Quebec workers of peripheral regions.
The transposition of humble origin, occupation and socio-economic status from place of origin to destination restricts occupational attainment. After migration, intergenerational mobility is limited and social mobility is weak.
The beaten migration path between Quebec and Hearst consolidates the family and social networks, conferring on Hearst a French character which in turn further favours Quebec immigration.

Full textThis thesis takes an ethnological approach and the research methodology is qualitative. The objective of the research is to demonstrate the complexity of the specific social intervention represented by the ‘twinning’ of newcomers with Quebecois from the receiving society. Our research ground is the Intercultural Twinning Network: an umbrella group of community practitioners in this area. The twinning program applied by the majority of practitioners in the Intercultural Twinning Network is one defined and funded by the state. However the social intervention of “twinning” goes beyond the simple setting up of a social relationship. The complexity of both the migration process and the integration process into the new society with which the newcomer is confronted, and thus indirectly confronts his/her twin, will have a decisive influence on the dynamics of their relationship. We will demonstrate that, while the objectives of the twinning program as set by the state are respected by the community organisations with regard to its function as a social regulator, community practitioners tend to give more weight to the innovative function of social linking, and the transformation of social relations. Nevertheless, an analysis of our results reveals that even though this view permeates the spirit of the twinning program, reality may be expressed in a different way. The uncertainty of the practitioner, which is linked to her awareness of her own limitations is reinforced by multiple constraints which have a considerable impact on the practice of twinning. The recruitment and selection of the participants are two major challenges, but by no means the only ones. It has become clear that the issue of the relationship between the practitioners and those who are twinned, and between the twins themselves, is at the heart of their concerns. Unspoken practices and zones of uncertainty push the practitioner to question their role and the limits of their functions. The practitioners acquire an ability to accept doubt, to discover other spaces for intervention and to develop alliances. The complexity of the integration process requires not only an individual comprehension of the process, but demands a collective acceptance of the implications of this same process. Twinning cannot be only a form of social regulation; it is also, more importantly, an agent of transformation.

Full textThis thesis proposes to identify the particular category of linguistic policies which deals with immigration. The chosen approach is to perform a cross analysis on four French-speaking contexts. This comparative research allows us to shift the focus on language and immigration away from the national level. We offer to place the linguistic, cultural and educational dimensions linked with the integration of migrants in a European and international perspective. This study has two objectives: perform a typology and an evaluation of these policies. We aim at describing and analysing the choices and actions led by the state to develop knowledge and learning for adult migrants. Our research identifies the turning point from which proficiency of language became a political issue, deeply intertwined with immigration policies. On one side, the thesis emphasizes the linguistic ideologies that shape the collective imaginations, and their influence on political arguments and language planning. On the other side, it highlights the flow of assumed ideologies and state practices related to language and immigration. Finally, the research takes into account the impact of language planning on knowledge production and training in language didactics

Full textThe initial hypothesis of this study was that immigrants' involvement in narrow transnational activities is linked to their weaker integration into Quebec society. To test this hypothesis, a series of interviews was conducted with members of the Dominican community of Montreal. These Dominicans were involved in varying levels of transnational activities within political, economic, and cultural spheres. The interviews were aimed at determining the integration process experienced by the different interviewees.
The results of this study showed, in contrast to the hypothesized predictions, that involvement in transnational activities was not linked to lesser levels of integration. In fact, the Dominicans involved in the most intensive transnational activities revealed a capacity to integrate into the receiving society as easily as other Dominicans, often showing a greater dynamism in their integration. Involvement in intensive transnational activities seems to show a capacity on the part of some immigrants to grow and develop in two universes at the same time, that of the receiving and that of the sending society.

Foreign musicians living in Quebec contributed to build and develop cultural landscape, and their influence on the musical world is far from negligible. However, what do we know about sociocultural and professional conditions of integration for these immigrant musicians? What challenges do they encounter? What strategies do they develop to move on with their professional career in a new artistic and social context? This research addresses one of the aspects of Quebec’s musical life through the problematic of the sociocultural and professional integration of immigrant performers of (learned) Western art music (or classical music). Based on the career of musicians living in Montreal since thirty five years or less, this study revolves around four axes: the impact of immigration on immigrant performers; their integration process; the influence of the sociocultural and musical context on the adaptation strategies these musicians developed and their contribution to Quebec’s musical world. Based on a sociomusicologic approach from a mixed methodology – theoretical study and field survey - this research is presented as an exploratory survey aiming to draw a general picture of the situations encountered by the immigrant performers in their integration. A theoretical framework was first prepared in order to expose, on one hand, the peculiarities of the work of performer (learning and professionalization) and, on the other hand, the different steps of immigration and integration, as well as their specificities. Then, by placing in this theoretical framework the data collected on the field, a more in-depth study of five particular cases allowed to apprehend the problematic through the experience of immigrant performers and to observe the strategies they developed to pass by the situations they had to face; one of their greatest challenge being to find the balance between their musical and cultural codes and those of the host country. The study of cases is driven by the parallel exposure of the experience of performers living in Montreal since thirty five years or less, the objective being to measure the incidence of the changes that happened in the musical milieu onto their socioprofessional integration process. Data analysis revealed that fast professional integration of immigrant performers is rather due to the parallel practice of traditional music from their home country than to their formation in classical music. This new dynamic of adaptation, favored by policies of valorization of cultural diversity, causes a progressive shift of organisms’ interests towards traditional or mixed musical genres. Are we going forward to a change of paradigm, leading to the gradual loss of the predominance of the classical repertoire within immigrant performers, for the benefit of the traditional repertoire?

Full textQuebecers are now struggling with the presence of new immigrants in the province which many identified as an « identity crisis ». From 2006 onwards, many debates on the question were widely broadcasted in the media and extensively discussed within academia and NGOs, ultimately affecting the political sphere. Those debates revealed a constant nervousness of the French Canadian population of Quebec that immigrants were invading the province, refusing to adopt Quebec’s unique culture, leaving them as a marginalized alienated community on their own territory. This fear seems to have its origins in the British colonial era of the 18th century, then transformed into the modern nationalist movement that reemerged in the middle of the 20th century. A question then arises : What are the effects of the British colonial era on the way Quebecers understand and interact with immigrants ? We argue that it resulted in an unconscious cultural reflex, maintained by a lack of historical consciousness, to protect itself from potential new invaders influencing the mechanisms of how Quebecers understand the Other. As understanding has great effects on action, this view ultimately affected intercultural relations and interactions. Through interviews with Quebec’s French Canadians and immigrants, we showed the influence of that fear in understanding and discourse and explored how immigrants react to Quebec’s situation.
