Full textThis thesis examines the private charitable sector for English-speakers in Quebec City from 1759 to 1900. It provides an overview of poor relief associations, the needs they addressed, and the gaps that remained. The role of private charities increased over the period studied, and that of the state decreased. Compassion toward the poor also increased, leading to new types of charitable organizations for the underclass. Despite this, the prison system served as a refuge to fill gaps in the private charitable sector. More specifically, this study demonstrates how changes in ethno-religious relations shaped the charity network. In the first half century after the Conquest of Quebec, British authorities supported the Catholic charitable infrastructure established during the French regime, which was unusual within the British Empire. After 1815, as immigration from Britain and Ireland increased, lay private voluntary associations emerged, including many that involved elite cooperation across religious and linguistic lines. Instances of cooperation decreased from 1835 to 1855 due to rising ethnic boundaries caused by the defeat of Patriote republicanism, an increase in religious practice, the establishment of separate confessional schools, and a new type of Irish-Catholic nationalism following the Great Famine. In the latter half of the nineteenth century, the private charitable sector became sharply divided into three parallel networks with hardly any overlap: one for Francophone Catholics, one for English-speaking Irish Catholics, and one for English-speaking Protestants. Two core institutions founded in the 1850s, Saint Bridget’s Asylum and the Ladies’ Protestant Home, cemented the divide. Rare attempts to challenge these boundaries resulted in tension and even violence. Despite these divisions, there was a greater mutual respect of established boundaries among communities than in most North American cities.

Full textThis thesis examines the contribution of collective petitions to the development of Quebec's public sphere in the second half of the eighteenth century. It examines these using the concepts of public, public sphere, public opinion, and spaces of sociability. The study is based on a detailed analysis of some 278 collective petitions from the establishment of civil government in 1764 until the creation of the parliamentary system in 1791. In the absence of traditional representative institutions, collective petitioning to colonial authorities became an essential tool for influencing political and administrative decisions. A long-standing practice in England but rare in New France, collective petitioning allowed for the participation of a broad swathe of the colony's population in the colonial public sphere: old and new subjects, men and women, elites and ordinary people.

Full textArchaeobotanical and archaeoentomological analyses were conducted on soil samples taken from an early 19th century privy found at the îlot des Palaissite (CeEt-30) in Quebec City. The insect and seed remains identified inform us about the consumption habits and the daily lives of the city’s inhabitants, during a period of great political, economic and social changes. In fact, the early 1800’s were marked by a population increase, the arrival of a large number of Anglophone immigrants and an accelerated development of the shipbuilding industry. We argue that despite the implementation of new trade networks and culinary traditions, a part of the French Canadian foodways remained relatively unchanged. Thanks to this research, we now have a better understanding of the impact the first decades of the British rule have had over New France’s old capital and the daily lives of its inhabitants.

Full textThis study examines the western latrines of the second Intendant's Palace in Quebec City (CeEt-30), the construction and use of which in the French Regime covers approximately the second quarter of the 18th century to 1759. The well-preserved structure and its contents allow for a thorough study of conditions and lifestyles related to consumer habits. As exemplary contexts for examining hygiene-related behaviour, latrines offer the opportunity to study these habits. The latrines and their contents also serve as a starting point for a broader examination of hygiene-related behaviours. In addition to the available data, the consideration of mentalities of the time period is discussed, thus allowing a better understanding of individual actions. The relationships of individuals with their bodies (personal hygiene), with the immediate environment (domestic hygiene) and with society (public hygiene) are explored in this study. Since the Intendant's Palace served as a residence as well as a place for the performance of a variety of tasks related to colonial administration, a number of people worked and lived on site, and these were mainly France citizens. It is therefore interesting to explore whether the behaviour of these people is a reflection ofsocial norms in force in their country of origin. We realize that their behaviours are cunningly executed and orchestrated in a social universe where appearance is of utmost importance. Hygiene-related behaviors at the Intendant's Palace thus mirror perfectly French society in the first half of the 18th century.

Full textQuebec archaeologists have been interested in applying scientific methods to the study of earthenware found in New France since the last few decades. European archaeologists used tools such as thin section layer analysis, spectrometry and statistics far before. In the 1980s André Proulx and Lueger and Oliver applied quantitative analysis to the study of Quebec ceramics. This project combines petrographic analysis, tomodensitometry (CT-SCAN) and statistical tools to examine the problem of ceramic provenance via the study of their pastes. Sherds were selected from 4 sites in Quebec City dating to the XVIIth century : la maison des Jésuites (CeEt-27), l'îlot des Palais (CeEt-30), le Parc des Braves (CeEt-677) and le domaine Maizerets (CfEu-1). The main purpose was to prove to our satisfaction that what we call local earthenware was indeed locally made. With the use of a CT-SCAN we were able to examine the quality of the manufacturing process and we tried to identify the work of different potters, ideally associating a particular manufacture to a specific potter. The use of the CT-SCAN together with petrographic analysis allows us to question both the advantages and disadvantages related to these methods.

Full textPublished during the American Revolution in the Collection des prospects, the perspective views Vuë de la Place capitale dans la Ville basse a Quebec, Vuë de la haute ville a Quebeck, Vuë de la basse Ville a Quebec vers le fleuve St-Laurent, Vuë de la rue des recolets de Quebeck et Vuë de Quebeck were etched by the German engravers Franz Xaver Habermann (1721-1796) and Balthasar Frederich Leizelt (1755-1812). The main goal of this thesis is to show how these five images were perceived as authentic even if the urban scenery that they depict is not topographically accurate. This allows us to highlight the formal constraints stemming from the optical instruments as well as the cultural models prevailing within the dominant perception of the American urban territory at the time of their creation and reception. Analyzing the fictionality of the German engravings also yields clues into the ideological orientations and the collective discourse about Quebec, perceived as a far away land, by a political ensemble which was not exerting direct domination on the colony founded on the shores of the Saint-Lawrence river.
