Full textThis study explores the modalities of the experience of the Good Shepherd Sisters of Quebec as they adapted to the Quiet Revolution and to the Second Vatican Council between 1960 and 1981. In addition to the wide social services they offered to women and to the poor in Quebec, Africa and Latin America, the sisters of the community have also been involved in education since the 1850s. While the Catholic Church was losing its legitimacy in society and its authority in the education field in the 1960s, the community initiated its renewal. Leaning on the Council's principles for the realization of the aggiornamento, and leveraging the legislative power of the general chapters, the community decentralized its government by increasing the autonomy of the sisters and empowering them. This investigation into the different versions of the constitutional documents of the community showed that those participative principles were the object of multiple tensions and debates within the community during the decades of 1960 and 1970. The decisions of the general chapters on these matters finally led to a more individual way of living the spiritual and community life. When the education system authority passed from the Catholic Church to the Quebec government in the 1960s, with the secularization of the society, the Good Shepherd Sisters needed to review their apostolic work in education. In response to the marginalization of the sisters in schools and to the decline of the community, the authorities relied on the individual initiatives and ensured the sisters' well-being in order to keep the community and its educational engagements alive. As the sisters were encouraged to go back to school and to specialize in the field of their choice, the community allowed some empowerment to the individuals, who could either continue their educational work or reorient in another apostolic sector, while respecting their vows of obedience and the community hierarchy. The exploration of the collective and individual adaptation experience of the Good Shepherd Sisters of Quebec increases the comprehension of the ambiguous relation between autonomy and obedience in a religious community.
Stewart, Bradley. "Le Voisinage : une communauté intentionnelle missionnaire dans une culture post-chrétienne." Master's thesis, Université Laval, 2021. http://hdl.handle.net/20.500.11794/70301.
Full textSocial and economic changes in recent decades have radically transformed the realities of young adult life. These changes led the student ministry Power to Change at Université Laval to reevaluate its context and its methods in order to better reach Québécois students. The result of these reflections was to found an intentional community (called Le Voisinage, or “The Neighbourhood”) in a student quarter of Quebec City, where Christian young adults decided to move together, integrating life, faith, and mission in their milieu. This study seeks to lay a missiological foundation for this community via a deep investigation of its context and by putting the community in dialogue with a movement of evangelical intentional communities, The New Monasticism. The contextual part of this study asks two questions: in what context was Power to Change founded, and in what ways did this context lead to methods and ways of thinking thinking that are either no longer pertinent, or even distortions of the Christian mission? We argue that a ministry dedicated exclusively to evangelism and discipleship is only relevant in a highly christianized context, and that the Church Growth Theology that we have inherited is patterned after the imaginary of consumer society. As a result, this missiology engages in the dynamics of consumerism and proves harmful both for young adults and for the Church. We finish by evaluating how neo-monastic missiology, based on the idea of the Church as a community of witness, and its expanded perspective of the Kingdom of God can balance a missiology centered on evangelism and individual salvation. A balanced missiology and a balanced practice can thus help the community Le Voisinage better serve students who are facing the pressures of consumer society.

Full textThis research studies youth from Haitian background who are somewhat attached to the church of their parents. It seeks to examine the extent of this attachment, firstly, according to pertinent scientific approaches, particularly sociological and psychological and secondly, through the youths’ own perception. From the perspective of pastoral care of migrants, the research also looks at the role of the congregation and the family in this attachment. Theological reflection examines the moral and pastoral support of the apostle Paul towards his young disciple Timothy, who was being criticized by elders in his church community. The situation of Timothy and of the youth in our study will be shown to be correlated. In both, youth is seen to imply immaturity. Likewise, the generation of biblical Ezra is analyzed; there the conservation of religious purity in the nation of Israel is compared to certain immigrant Haitian leaders and youth. This research shows that Haitian youth are attached to their parents’ congregation primarily for sociocultural reasons but also because of their personal faith in God. The mentality of the older generation is found to be crucial and can make this attachment more fragile.

Full textThe goal of this research is to study how the church of Quebec received the teaching of Vatican II on the synodality of the local church. An examination of reception as such provides the methodological foundation of the study. The second part presents the theology of the local church articulated by Vatican II (a communion of persons of different conditions and functions); studies the source of its "order" (its synodality); elaborates a heuristic model of its functioning (the celebration of the Eucharist) and exposes the institutional forms presented by the codex of 1983 for the practical implementation of this synodal right. The third major section presents the church of Quebec as a subject of reception. A social-historical study of this local church is followed by a highly detailed analysis of the way this church is governed between 1982 and 1987. It is on the basis of these considerations that the reception of the teaching of Vatican in the Quebec’s diocese is interpreted

Full textThis Ph.D. thesis deals with a contemporary form of Haitian vodou practiced in the diaspora and especially in Montreal. I chosen to focus my study on one of its version existing in Haiti, called vodou asogwe. Thereby my thesis analyzes a diasporic and transnational religion in the context of globalization. Empiric data of my research expose that the practice of vodou asogwe in Montreal lies as on adaptations to this new context than a continuity of its deep logic. I designed my methodology to grasp the meaning of the religious practice from the inside, regularly practicing with my interlocutors. I led my Ph.D. fieldwork during two years into a spiritual family, while taking into account the wider religious lineage in which it is embedded. This drove me to observe the rituality and to conduct interviews in several locations spread between Montreal and Haiti, all of them connected by this transnational religious lineage. The analysis I develop combines the study of transnational religions to the theoretical lens of ontological anthropology. The demonstration aims to analyze the way in which adaptation of diasporic vodou asogwe to globalization allows it to perpetuate itself while being inside a modern context but still lying on a specific ontology. In order to unfold this analysis the thesis is structured by the study of the dynamic between adaptations and continuities in the practice of vodou which appears in particular in its spatial insertion and its territorialization process. Keywords : Montreal, Haiti, diaspora, transnationalization, religion, vodou asogwe, globalization, ontology.

Full textSituated at the crossroads between the theology of spiritual life and the history of Christian spirituality, the research explores the doctrinal work of Julienne Dallaire (1911-1995). Better known as Mother Julienne of the Rosary, this spiritual person from Quebec – foundress of the congregation of the Dominican Missionary Adorers – develops a spirituality rooted in a contemplation of Christ where Scripture and Church Tradition are widely called upon. An in-depth reading of her manuscript heritage shows that adoration occupies a central place in it and serves an integrative function. Thus, for a first approach to the corpus, focusing on the subject of adoration as the main theme of the thesis naturally imposed itself. The choice to study the writings of a spiritual author stems from the conviction that the Christian experience is a real locus theologicus as was widely pointed out in the twentieth century by theologians of spiritual life, such as Charles-André Bernard or François-Marie Léthel. At the methodological level, in addition to a descriptive process aiming to establish the necessary presuppositions at the historical level, the process of investigation of the documents transmitted by Julienne is essentially inductive. It uses tools of literary analysis – rhetorical, narrative and pragmatic – which have the advantage to favour a more objective appropriation of the content of the texts, taking into account their respective genres. In this field, the research benefits from the expertise developed by Thérèse Nadeau-Lacour. The results at the end of this exploratory process reveal various biblical, christological and anthropological elements through which Julienne operates a major shift in the « traditional » ways of conceiving adoration. While recalling the natural meaning of this reality, Julienne helps discover the newness brought by Christ. The distinction she makes between the adorable Christ and the adoring Christ is fundamental. By bringing to light the specificity of the hypostatic union proper to the Incarnation of Christ, she leads her reader to consider not only the adorable character of the person of Christ, but the worshiping dynamism that underlies his whole existence. Reflection thus opens up to the Trinitarian dimension of adoration and to the covenantal relationship it implies. This point of view allows Julienne to bring to light the act of love by which Christ offers himself for the glory of God and the salvation of the world, an act that is perpetuated in eternity and is always present in the Sacrament of the altar, because of the event of Holy Thursday. From these christocentric foundations emerges a theological anthropology which, based on the gifts of baptism and Holy Eucharist, invites the believer to become Christ-like in the mystery of his adoring life. The approach helps to make explicit the spiritual path shown in the fourth Gospel: in Christ, all life participates in this fundamental attitude of adoration « in spirit and in truth ». Julienne brings together her understandings under the expression « devotion to the Eucharistic Heart (of Jesus) ». She considers the Virgin Mary as the model par excellence of this spirituality. In the current theological horizon, Julienne's proposal is complementary and, in some respects, has an integrating capacity, with regards to the sacramental perspective of recent decades, which has largely – and almost exclusively – occupied the discussions concerning adoration. Her teaching on this subject invites to rediscover and/or to initiate other fertile approaches, anticipating first of all the impetus given by the Second Vatican Council and then secondly, deploying it. From the openings that the theological research achieves, the conclusions suggest paths for future exploration in areas as varied as biblical exegesis, liturgy and even ecumenism.

This study seeks to explore experiences of social exclusion among refugees from sub-Saharan Africa resettled in Quebec and to understand the effects of forms of social exclusion on their living conditions and their health. The research is based on a qualitative quote that gives the floor to experts to live, ten refugees from different countries of sub-Saharan Africa. These people were met in semi-structured individual interviews. The results of the study shed light on different processes of social exclusion in different environments such as work, school, businesses, public transportation and various public places. The forms of social exclusion identified by participants are related to racial discrimination in hiring, identity contempt, difficulty in creating social links with the host community, lack of respect for fundamental rights and restrictive program rules. The social exclusion experienced by sub-Saharan refugees resettled in Quebec makes them experience living conditions that are very deleterious to their health: food insecurity, low income, unhealthy housing, resettlement in neighborhoods that are unfavorable to health and unsafe. In addition, this research identifies some effects of social exclusion and living conditions on health such as chronic diseases and mental health problems. KEYWORDS: resettled refugees, social exclusion, determinants of health, living conditions, health, Quebec

Full textThe protestant revival in the french-speaking community in quebec in the 1830's unsettled the linguistic and religious opposition between french-speaking catholic canadians and a population which was mainly english-speaking and protestant. Our research has focused on determining the causes and analysing the mechanisms that led this ambitious missionary project to ist eventual failure. The missionary work set our at the start under excellent circumstances since the most favourable conditions for success seemed to be present (the fervour of european proselytes, the support of civilian and religious english-speaking authorities, the weakening or the catholic faith in the french-speaking population). From 1834 to 1860, the five missionary organisations (the french canadian missionary society, the baptist, presbyterian and methodist societies) directed their efforts to colportage, the setting up of missionary stations and education. Yet, these often competing activities greatly reduced their actual efficiency and fueled the spiritual revival of the catholic church. From 1861 to 1880, the evangelization movement moved further and further from its european ties and diversified its activities. In quebec, ultramontanism grew stronger and, banned from their community, quite a number of converts adoptent the english language. Assimilation was brough about either suddenly for those who chose exile or progressively for those who stayed in the province. From 1881 to 1925, four churches (presbyterians, baptists, anglicans, methodists) shared the leadership of the movement which slowly lost strengh. The same churches more and more questioned the relevance of their commitment. In 1925, the anglicans, the baptists and the new united church

Full textThis dissertation offers elements of a response to the question of "how to organize church in small rural parishes today. " Three periods in the history of parochial networking in the diocese of Rimouski are first identified and analyzed. In the periods from 1867-1891 and 1928-1950, we find two different dynamics which lead to the foundation of small parishes in the rural milieu: the recognition of a stable community and the support for a colonization effort in the context of economic crisis. The period from 1968-2000 presents, on the other hand, a dynamic of struggle for the survival of small parishes faced with diminishing populations. In each instance, the ideal of Christian society is sought within the framework of parish. Three ecclesiological marks are identified in view of reshaping parishes. These three marks-structured communion, fraternity-solidarity, hope-involvement-reveal much about Christian life in a parochial milieu and are suggestive of a new and motivating pastoral project

Full textThe general objective of this thesis is to analyze the process by which guidance and career counselors (CO) have experienced developing throughout their working lives, from a professionalization perspective (Uwamariya and Mukamurera, 2005). In recent years, the practice of guidance has evolved a lot in parallel with economic, social and technological transformations which in turn have given rise to new forms of organizations and work-related methods (Cuerrier and Locas, 2004; Mercure, 2018; Thwaites, 2004; Zawieja and Guarnieri, 2014). At the same time, these changes have given rise to a diversification of life courses and professional trajectories (Fournier, Poirel and Lachance, 2016). To adjust to this trend and offer services adapted to the needs of the individuals they support, the CO who participated in this research, as is the case for their colleagues, were invited to constantly renew their practice. in increasingly diverse practice contexts (Ordre des conseillers et conseillères d’orientation du Québec [OCCOQ], 2017). However, in the light of current scientific documentation (Bransford, Brown and Cocking, 2000; Carré and Charbonnier, 2003; Eraut, 2007; Jorro, 2014; Lefeuvre, Garcia and Namolovan, 2009; Marsick, 2006; Rønnestad, Orlinsky, Schröder, Skovholt and Willutzki, 2019), we find that it is still difficult to fully understand the way in which practitioners, and in particular CO, more concretely carry out these professionalization processes during their life course at work. Careful analysis of these writings, however, has made it possible to propose an original conceptualization of these types of process, which can be characterized by dynamic and interactive play between the following three fundamental components: the "actor" (or a practitioner), "the situations that 'it meets in particular environments' and its "activity" (Bourdoncle, 2000; Lefeuvre et al., 2009; Wittorski, 2009). Furthermore, there is little empirical research to better understand the situations that play a significant role in the professional development of practitioners. We also know very little about the learning that can result from these situations, as well as about the possible repercussions of this learning for activity and identity building throughout their professional life. These findings apply particularly to CO, if we consider the little documentation on the subject in the field of counseling and guidance (Cournoyer and Turcotte, 2016; Fournier et al., 2016; Holowiak-Urquhart and Taylor, 2005; Mellouki and Beauchemin, 1994a, 1994b; Osborn and Baggerly, 2004). In addition to the production of knowledge allowing a better understanding of this experience of professionalization, a more in-depth study of these situations and learning and of the role they play in their professional development could also serve as benchmarks for guidance and career counselors and for the training of the future practitioners. In order to examine the process of professionalization of experienced CO, this qualitative research borrows from a narrative / biographical approach (Creswell, 2013; Tochon and Miron, 2004). The sample consists of 30 experienced CO from the practice areas where they are usually found (OCCOQ, 2017). Firstly, the results obtained make it possible to draw up a detailed typology of the situations which played a significant role in the process of professionalization of the participants. The results also made it possible to identify the natures and functions of the learning resulting from the experience of these situations and which influenced their activity and the construction of their professional identity. Secondly, the data reveal that the interaction between these situations and these significant learning offers a relevant framework for understanding the professionalization process among experienced CO. Three typical professionalization profiles have been identified. The discussion then helps to clearly understand the contribution of this thesis for the advancement of knowledge and leads, in conclusion, to prospects for training and research.

Full textThe origins, experiences and backgrounds of newcomers to the province of Quebec have been increasingly diverse since the 1960s. The challenges of this new reality has led to the use of intervention approaches in an intercultural context that favour the development of a greater cultural sensitivity and the appropriation of strategies to overcome obstacles to understanding and collaborating between social stakeholders and those assisted. However, these approaches do little or do not address the religious or spiritual aspect, which can sometimes be a major part of the newcomer’s identity. While Canadian policies emphasize the need to consider the religious dimension, the current dominant view of this reality is yet to marginalize this aspect of the identity of newcomers. This characterizes the reality of the Muslim population who is held in fear because of public prejudice. Considering the previous findings and given the limited data available on this subject in the city of Quebec, this qualitative research seeks to explore and obtain a better understanding of the perspectives of eight Muslim immigrants regarding whether or not their religious identity is taken into consideration during services they receive or have received in the past by social workers. Throughout the use of the intercultural systemic approach, the data collected during the interviews made it possible to highlight diverse experiences regarding the way in which the religious is received in context of the aid relationship. It also made it possible to describe the social and political context in which this project is situated and the impact that this context has on the daily experience of the respondents. Key words: immigration, islam, identity, social intervention, intercultural approach, systemicapproach, qualitative research.

This research stemmed from the will to understand whether sponsorship immigration laws had an impact on relationships between men and women who chose to immigrate through this channel. At first glance, this law facilitating family reunification for permanent residents or citizens can seem positive, especially for women. The accounts of the ten women who took part in my research demonstrate that on the contrary, the situation is extremely complex and sometimes leads to diverse forms of violence. It also contributes to the creation of asymmetric relationships and inequalities among couples. The semi-directed interviews conducted with sponsored immigrant women living in Québec City clearly show that this immigration procedure has its own particularities, and that its effects on the subjects’ lives are not just positive.

Full textThis paper aims at analysing a sample of intellectuals, chosen amongst the best known. The history of intellectual circles is not well established in Quebec and the historiography of the twenties and thirties so far has mostly consisted of a discourse about the "specific culture", because of the "closure" of the country. Every foreign element in this culture was generally considered as a threat toward the identity of the nation and a "cultural colonisation". The debate focuses around the opposition to the anglo-saxon culture, and as such is highly sensitive and emotionally charged. To depoliticize the debate and bring it to the level of facts rather than sole politics and ideology, this work uses the tools developped in France for the history of intellectuals. The term "formation" is taken in a wide sense and includes secondary and further education, as well as networks of intellectuals, readings and early years experiences. Comparisons with France's intellectuals and ideologies allow a reinterpretation of this period. Traditionnally, intellectuals circles in Quebec have been analysed as having a specific identity. In fact it must be read strictly within the context of western ideologies, such as the teachings of Maurras and the "action française", nationalism, antimodernism and the "psycho logy of nation". Intellectuals in Quebec share the same basic values and behaviours with their French counterparts, simply adjusting them to serve local debates. French culture was used as a fragship in the fight agains anglo-saxon culture

Full textSince the end of the Second World War, Quebec society has undergone major changes that may have influenced the recent increase in the standard of living of Quebecers: i) major school reforms; ii) the change from the Fordist model of production to the post-Fordist model of production; iii) increased contribution of women to the labor market; iv) the change from the modern family model to the contemporary family model; and v) the aging of the population. The main objectives of this thesis are, on the one hand, to better understand how these transformations could have affected the increase in the standard of living from 1986 to 2016 and, on the other hand, to highlight the inequalities in the standard of living between households according to their characteristics. To do this, we propose to examine the evolution of the standard of living from a macroeconomic perspective, using real GDP per capita, and from a microeconomic perspective using adjusted income. Some of our variables had negative impacts on the standard of living (changes in the demographic profile of the population, the decrease in the number of workers per household, the decrease in the number of hours worked level as well as changes in household composition). Other variables had nuanced impacts or little impact (changes in the age and sex of the primary maintainer, the decrease in household size and the stagnation of employment income). On the other hand, certain variables had positive impacts (the evolution of the employment rate, the growth of productivity, the decrease in the number of dependent children per household, the increase in the level of education and the growth government transfers).
