The goal of this study is to do a structural analysis of the work of the Irish author Laurence Sterne (1713-1768), The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman, published in 1760 and that was remarkable for representing a true aesthetic revolution in a literary genre that was already renowned on the 18th century in England: the novel. Breaking with the predominant aesthetical notions of the romanesque genre of his time, Sterne shows in his work a shattered narrative, with incomplete, out of order, chapters, endless digressions and a narrator whose trustworthiness is constantly put in question. Starting from the complexity brought by Sterne?s aesthetical innovations, we will investigate various ways by which the author breaks the narrative in his novel. Those breaks have as main goal to provoke in his readers a constant sensation of strangeness and frustration, so that in order to understand Tristram Shandy it is necessary that the reader forgoes a passive reading and starts to work alongside with the author himself, Tristram, so that they may understand the intentions behind Sterne?s shattered and chaotic narrative, which seeks to provoke laughter and reflection, plus revealing a satirical and critic view of the English puritan society of the 18th century. For the analysis of this novel, we will investigate the aesthetical techniques and narratives used by Sterne that seek to cause strangeness and alter the reader?s perception, like the fragmentation of the novel, the changes in the rhythm of the narrative and the process of parody. Furthermore, we will analyse how the laughter is performed through the carnivalization and the erotization, and finally we will discuss a little about the graphical techniques are used by the author to reclaim his authorial property in his work. As our theoretical basis, we will use the studies by Chklovsky (1978), Lotman (1978), Bakhtin (1993), Genette (1995), Reis and Lopes (2000), Arag?o (1980), among others. We conclude that the ruptures of the narrative on Sterne?s work aim to create a work able to give to its readers a unique reading experience, revealing a work of powerful criticism and social satire behind its shattered narrative, as well as an extremely critic and innovating sense of humour.

This study, linked to the research line "Training of Educators" of the Postgraduate Program in Education of the Universidade Metodista de São Paulo, aimed to promote a reflection on the evaluation process to which Higher Education Institutions are subject. Presential Support Pole, offer Distance Higher Education in Brazil. The social and economic changes that have taken place over the last decades emphasize the need for such reflection, considering the growth of enrollments in distance education courses and their representativeness in the offer of Higher Education nowadays. Thus, from the legal organization and the current regulatory evaluative process, it became necessary to understand the role of the University as an educational institution, its interaction with technology and the conditions to which the evaluation interprets this confluence on the qualitative character. In this context, the perspective of those who experience this evaluative process, in the position of evaluated, was necessary so that the express was its interpretation on the social and economic importance of such modality. Therefore, the work sought to investigate: What perceptions emerge from the narratives of the professionals who work in the Distance Learning when they reflect on the evaluation processes carried out by INEP / MEC? As a quality, does current evaluative practice accurately understand the complex relationship between the actors involved in the process of knowledge transmission in what structurally refers to a Presential Support Pole and its involvement with the community where it is inserted? From the theoretical point of view, to understand Higher Education and University (CASPER; HUMBOLDT, 2003; DIAS SOBRINHO, 2010; DEMO, 2010; SANTOS, 2011), the role of EAD (Moore, KEARSLEY, 2013; DRON, 2015) As well as the discussions about the interaction of society and education with technology (PINTO, 2005; LÉVY, 1999; GABRIEL, 2015) until reaching the evaluative relations to qualify the offer of courses and programs supported by new means of communication (DIAS SOBRINHO, And the evaluation of the quality of this study. Still, the reflections on the themes that emerge from narratives (CLANDININ; CONNELY, 2005; FREIRE, 2012, 2015) have become key to the opening of new understandings on the proposed theme. The corpus consists of six hermeneutical interviews / conversations that took place between 2015 and 2016. From the hermeneutic-phenomenological analysis emerged from the narratives of the participants' experiences on the evaluation process of the Distance Learning on the Presential Support Pole, reflections on the paths adopted and its impacts on the organization and offer of courses and on institutions in Brazil.

Abstract:
Acquiring a wide currency in the 1990s as a term designating non-normative practices and identity formations, queer studies challenged dominant knowledges and social hierarchies of heteronormativity as well as the sexual homogeneity of earlier feminist critique. Whilst acknowledging the impact and efficacy of queer theory, this thesis poses the question: how can queer studies be utilised beyond the borders of Euro-America? More precisely, what happens when we intersect queer studies with postcolonial studies? This thesis argues that by exploring the interstices between the two fields, we are able to create a new field of academic research in which social and cultural meanings of sexuality become the main objects of colonial, historical and literary study. By combining queer and postcolonial studies, this thesis questions the validity of both fields. It exposes and explores their shortcomings by looking at the queer diasporic narratives in and from the Caribbean. Queer, diaspora and nation work as central elements, as the thesis investigates the Western notions of sexual identity and belongingness alongside postcolonial deployments of nation, diaspora and sexuality. The focus of this thesis is on the literary genre of queer diasporic literature; that is, diasporic fictions that propose alternative formulations of home and diaspora. One of the main arguments is that queer diasporic fictions challenge hegemonic formulations and constructions of diasporic identity. Thus, they have the potential of adding to the genre of diasporic narratives a queer take on sexuality as well as the nation. Employing the notion of queer tactical diaspora as a methodology, the thesis moves from one theoretical and geographical Caribbean space to the next, deconstructing the developmental model of nonheterosexuality while combining the movement of sexuality with the developmental passage from one fixed boundary into another. By employing queer tactical diaspora, the thesis investigates how narratives of the Caribbean diaspora queer and displace the Eurocentric deployments of sexuality in postcolonial fiction. Defying firm groundings within either diaspora or queer studies, this work employs a range of theoretical paradigms in order to reach the goal of disrupting the Eurocentric notions of sexual diasporic narratives, By building on the already existing theories of gender and postcolonial studies, this thesis suggests that the method of queer tactical diaspora allows for a more agile and flexible investigation into the workings of normative gender and sexuality in the Caribbean. Queer tactical diaspora adds to the broader theories of postcolonialism and gender studies a new method of analysis.

Abstract:
In asking ‘How do queer Palestinian womyn ‘queer’ Palestinian identity”, the present research focuses on the various forms of traditional, narrative, and creative resistance practices of Palestinian womyn who challenge the following three narratives: 1) the national narrative which tags ‘queer’ as ‘Other’ and which posits the national movement at the top of the hierarchy of struggles; 2) the colonial narrative which is sustained by the Israeli public relations campaigns aiming to portray Israel as a modern, progressive, safe gay haven for queers, in opposition to a Palestine and Arab World which are said to be integrally homophobic, barbaric, regressive, etc. in an attempt to ‘pinkwash’ the occupation; and 3) the neocolonial narrative in which Western and Israeli Jewish queer movements reproduce colonial dynamics in their attempt to ‘save’ Palestinian queers who are deemed to be powerless, voiceless victims in need of saving.

Abstract:
The writer Marcelino Freire claims, in repeated interviews, being a "non-practitioner homosexual," when asked about his sexuality. The ironic declaration serves as an argument to guide the present Masters dissertation in order to verify how the concept of biographema can be associated with different Freire’s narratives and to analyze if - and in which way - this author's statement reverberates in the literary production of queer characters in his work. For reaching the proposed goals, it will be seen how the biographical space of a writer projects his image with the readers and how it is reflected in his writing. The research begins with the discussion about public vs. private and reality vs. fiction and about the importance of the interview as an autobiographical gesture, bringing to the reflection the concepts of biography, by Philippe Lejeune, and autofiction, by Serge Doubrovsky. From the biographical issue as a possible construction of reality, we turn to the concept of biographeme, by Roland Barthes, analyzing how such biographical traits, fragments, gain [new] life in Marcelino Freire’s fiction. The second part of the research brings different perspectives - cultural, gender and language studies - to reflect about Marcelino Freires’s narratives and queer characters. An the end, the dissertation will seek to conclude if the writer is a "practitioner homosexual" in his literature, positioning himself on issues of gender and sex in contemporaneity.

This master\'s thesis investigates the representation of reality in the novel Falling Man, by Don DeLillo. The method is the interpretative analysis of key excerpts of the novel which may represent the whole architecture of the narrative, following the steps of Erich Auerbach. Writings by Fredric Jameson about the political unconscious and temporality in postmodernity as the theories of Karl Marx (alienation) and Guy Debord (society of the spectacle) helped us leading a socio-historical reading of the novel.

A derrota é então narrada.

Abstract:
Conflicts around gender oppression and the human dignity of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people (LGBT) have redefined contemporary behavior and social dialogue. In the last decades, journalistic narratives capture with greater intensity the human, public and political character of issues of sexual and gender diversity. However, the difficulty that journalists encounter in working out relationships with LGBT people because of the cultural construction of gender they have is remarkable, but not only that. It is in this context that this dissertation rehearses a knowledge about the role of the journalist (the social mediator) in creating paths of understanding, solidarity and recognition for others, especially, with the LGBT community. It was developed a cultural analysis of the narrative of three book reports written by brazilian women: O Nascimento de Joicy, by Fabiana Moraes; Muito Prazer - Vozes da Diversidade, by Karla Lima and Entre a Cruz e o Arco-íris, by Marília de Camargo César. The theoretical and methodological course includes a dialogue with thinkers of gender and sexuality studies, mostly with the ideas of the Queer Theory. There are also contributions of complexity, sensitivity and affection in Cremilda Medina and other communication theorists. Finally, the author-journalists are heard, and notions of alterity are made, which can be a possible path of enchantment, discovery, curiosity and, above all, respect for the Other.

Abstract:
This thesis is comprised of three manuscripts, each concerned with the narrative abilities of school-aged French-speaking children as assessed with the Edmonton Narrative Norms Instrument (ENNI). The three studies involved the same three groups of participants: one group of 12 children with SLI between the ages of eight year three months and nine year nine months, 12 typically-developing children of the same age and 12 typically-developing children matched on language abilities. Each child completed narrative tasks, language abilities tasks and cognitive tasks during one experimental session at their home.
The first manuscript compares the ENNI narrative production (story grammar and referential expression) of school-aged French-speaking children to those of English-speaking children of the same age. It also provides data on the use of the ENNI with the school-aged French-speaking population with specific language impairment (SLI) by comparing their performance to the performance of their typically-developing (TD) peers. The second manuscript aims to identify which linguistic and cognitive skills contribute to narrative production of children with and without SLI at two levels: the micro- and the macro- levels. Finally, the third manuscript investigates the impact of variations in syntactic demand on the narratives produced by French-speaking children with SLI in comparison to the narratives produced by their age- and language- matched peers. The discussion summarizes the characteristics of French-speaking children's narrative production, the factors contributing to competency in narrative production, and explores the implications of these findings for language processing of children with and without SLI.

"The Falling Sky like an Autobiography minor" (A queda do céu como uma autobiografia menor) aims to achieve a theoretical analysis of the work The Fall from the Sky (2015) of Davi Kopenawa and Bruce Albert. In a specific way we chose to oppose the canon theory that deals with the records of the myself to the text above, aiming to propose new concepts that support a renewed interpretation of this scripture. In such a way, the problems pointed out in the course of the analysis showed the limits that heuristic the own theories supporting when encountered with the textuality that, at least in our hypothesis, not favoring a fruitful and valuable for the interpretation of The Fall from the Sky. In the face of such finding, we emphasize the methodology that follows: We conducted a foucaultian archeology of theories by determining, with this, the conditions of possibility of the emergence of these knowledges, as partial result achieved a diagnosis around the main problems epistemic as well as of the most important lines of understanding that the epistemes feature. Subsequently, we propose new forms of interpretation as well as new approaches around The Fall from the Sky. Our result is to renew the concept of real and representational that guide much of literary theory, as well as a new way to understand the role of narrator in autobiographical narratives. Thus, for the theoretical basis of this study were used the authors of guidelines as Michel Foucault (2008), Jacques Derrida (1999), Judith Butler (2015), Philip Lejuene (2018), Paul De Man (1886), Leonor Arfuch (2010), Jacques Lacan (1999), Roy Wagner (2010), Eduardo Viveiros de Castro (2015) and Deleuze & Guattari (2014).

Abstract:
The purpose with this paper is to use an older belletristic litterature, like in this case Ett sällsamt öde by Frida Stéenhoff and do a queer theoretical analysis of the short story and then discuss the didactical implications the short story and my reading of the short story can have in the Swedish school and the work to active counteract discrimination. I have designed three questions who can answer my purpose with this paper. The following questions are: - How do Mikael and Ethel challenge the heterosexual standard? - How can the important breakfronts in the short story be comprehended and explained by the queer theory? - What in my reading of the short story can be actualized as relevant in the didactic field? The method I have used to answer these questions is a queer theoretical close reading of the short story. I have been able to use this method with the help of the queer theoretical perspective as my thesis and concepts such as Butler’s perfomativity and Foucault’s categorizing and exlusion are important concepts in my analysis and result. The conclusion I have been able to reach is that the short story Ett sällsamt öde actually is a story that can be used in the Swedish school and the work to actively counteract discrimination. With the queer theoretical perspective as my basis I have been able to find four different aspects that I consider important for the story itself but also to discuss with the students in school. These four aspects are Mikael Ignace’s identity, his suicide and Ethel’s psychological state and her way back to the nursing home as she herself once upon a time was admitted to. These four aspects challenge the heterosexual state and can from a queer perspective interpreted as Frida Stéenhoff’s figurative metaphors for a more comprehending society. With these aspects to my help I want to use queer pedagogy with my students to show them that norms, categorizing and similar aspects are constructions built by human beings and therefore are able to be critically examined and that they are changeable.

Abstract:
This essay deals with non-normative gender expressions during childhood. I’m using narrative theory and methods to analyze autobiographical narratives. My questions are: What strategies does the non-normative person use to deal with his otherness? Using the methodological analysis tool ”turning point”, where are the turning points in the narratives? Are their any common turning points in the various narratives? Where is the responsibility placed in the narratives for that someone does not fit in by the adults/ staff at the school/kindergarten- on the non-normative person or at the surroundings? The experiences are interpreted through theories and concepts from queer theory and gender theory. The study reflects the importance of an anti-oppressive pedagogy in school.

Full text
Abstract:
My project looks at current conceptualizations of identity relating to gender and sexuality in order to understand how queer individuals enact gender as connected to their non-normative sexuality. I will use the notion of "desire" through Butler's (1990) notion of performativity as a part of iterability that reproduces an opposition between what is intended and how it is perceived. This approach creates space to problematize the status of identities that posits the conception of fluidity and dialectic as attached to notions of gendered sexualities - the understanding that sexuality interacts with gender and that these two notions are not compartmentalized. The construction of these systems of categorization allows for an assumption of the role of sexuality as connected to gender that can then be read through discursive practices and performances. This research is placed within a post-structuralist and queer theory discussion that is used to understand identity as separate from an isolated core self and is rather comprehended through a particular connection of gender, sex, desire, and performance. By entering into a queer theory and post-structuralist discussion, this project aims to highlight ways in which gender and sex are not necessarily "intelligible" - in which one's gender enactment follows their sex, which then leads them to be attracted to the "opposite" sex/gender - and by doing so I will be able to understand how non-heterosexuals understand their own sexualized gender. The categories of gender and desire are not mutually exclusive nor are they dichotomous. According to Butler (1990), the heterosexual matrix addresses the power structures associated with hegemonic modes of discourse and thought; therefore, my project embraces this approach to gender and sexuality and how these understandings create a unique performance of repetition that further constructs an identity. This study specializes in the reformulation and re-articulation of a distinct consciousness of compounded identities that are comprised of a sexualized gender involving the performative interplay of sexuality on gender for queer individuals. In addition, this project seeks to understand how queer individuals form, understand, perform, and enact their evolving gender identity as connected to their sexuality. Specifically my research asks: 1) How do queer individuals narrate the construction of their particular identities? 2) How do queer individuals enact their gender as connected to sexuality? and 3) How do queer individuals describe their identities as marginalized? In order to answer these questions I conducted 20 interviews with queer individuals in Portland, OR aged 18-35 in order to get a broad range of life experiences. The use of one-on-one interviews allowed me to get at the interpretative perspective of the participant such that they can clarify the connections and relationships they see between their own sexualized gender enactment and the world around them. This also allowed access to acquire information about the social interplay of gender, sex, and desire and how these individuals may or may not place importance on their queer identity and the processes involved.

Muhic, Dina. "Ring Around the Rosie: Queer Temporality in Narratives of Trauma." Thesis, University of Oregon, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/1794/23180.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation employs both traditional and digital tools to analyze fictional texts through the converging lenses of narratology, queer theory, and trauma studies. I am invested specifically in the work fictional narratives perform within the current cultural context, which is itself problematized by our increasingly fractured media landscape. While most of the work on trauma and queerness examines the trauma that is often implicated in the experience of being queer, I take a different approach, investigating ways in which the experience of trauma is itself queer. Drawing on medical and psychiatric studies of post-traumatic stress disorder, I posit that the fragmented temporal and affective space of trauma is also the space of queerness. “Ring Around the Rosie” locates an intersection between Edelman’s anti-futurism and Muñoz’s utopian hope in the disavowal of the restrictive circularity of traumatic memory, and the subsequent embrace of Stockton’s concept of lateral growth. Written language and linear narrative inevitably fail to adequately reconstruct, convey, and process trauma because traumatic memories are formed in the part of the brain that functions outside of language and chronological time and relies instead on sensory experience. I confront this barrier through queer temporality and a form of destabilized communication that does not rely on such language alone. Since any true employment of the concept of the queer must itself perform queerness, I allow my analysis to develop in a manner as fragmented and multiplicitous as television programming itself, which includes an approach of critical closeness and an increasingly organizationally destabilized presentation of the argument. This project’s preoccupation with form stems, in part, from my desire to not only allow for but demand an affective and personal component to academic research and analysis. The supplementary digital module culminates this study of form through its online presentation that enacts the theories argued within it. Paradoxically, “Ring Around the Rosie” is unified through fragmentation: of traumatic memories, of queer temporality, and of viewer engagement with fictional texts.

Abstract:
The past few decades have seen a rise in the visibility and legal rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) people, yet persistent stigmatization has left many searching for alternate ways of seeking connection. An increasingly popular means for LGBTQ individuals to find relationships is through online dating. While the Internet has been prolific in connecting LGBTQ communities, existing research on the use of Internet-dating sites in sexual minorities has focused primarily on gay men’s dating practices, overlooking queer women. The present study used a narrative approach to address the primary research question: What are queer women’s experiences of using online dating websites to find partnership? Qualitative, open-ended interviews were conducted with a purposive sample of five women who identified as queer and had used dating websites. Interviews were then transcribed and analyzed using Braun and Clarke’s (2006) thematic content analysis, resulting in the creation of three themes and 13 subthemes. These themes represent a significant and unique aspect of participants’ experiences of online dating, including their reasons for going online, how they navigated those spaces and the issues that they faced. The research findings aligned with previous literature on the subjects of online dating and queer women’s communities, and also highlighted new ideas for consideration and further exploration. Investigating these narratives may ultimately be used to inform clinical practice for sexual minority clients by contributing to our understanding of queer lived experiences and adapting counselling approaches based on this knowledge. This may improve LGBTQ client satisfaction with counselling and increase the potential for beneficial therapeutic outcomes.

Abstract:
This thesis offers readings of several slash (i.e. homoerotic) fanfiction narratives produced and shared online by members of the Harry Potter fandom. I argue that an understanding of slash fanfiction must be grounded not, as commonly suggested in the literature on slash, in binaristic and essentialized assumptions about the coherence of categories of gender and sexuality, but instead in a highly contextualized consideration of the canon text, fans' shared desires for that text, and a collective memory which, in Potter fandom, centers on diegetic trauma. Through embodied encounters with online texts, the protracted practices of queer reading, and the (re-)telling of queer(ed) stories, the subjectivity of fans changes: slash texts and fandom interactions enable fans not just to read but also to speak differently, to potentially narrate themselves queerly in ways that challenge traditional framings of coherent and legible desire and embodiment.

Abstract:
This dissertation analyzes narratives of queer partner migration, that is, a family-tie migration in which one of the partners of a relationship has migrated in order for the partners to be together, and where the partners queer the migration in the sense that they have a non-normative sexuality and/or gender identity. The purpose of the study is to examine how queer partner migrants and their Swedish partners experience the migration process – which continues also once the administrative process has been completed – by analyzing the emotions and feelings that emerge in the process. The study is a contribution to research on privileged migration as well as intimate migration. The focus is the queer partner migration relationship, and what emotions and feelings ‘do’ to this relationship, but also how emotions and feelings structure the migration process. The study analyzes the work three different emotions – love, loss, and belonging – do in these migration processes, and how this work is described in the participant narratives. Migrant participants have migrated from different parts of the world (Africa, Europe, Latin America, and North America), making it possible to analyze what emotions and feelings do in this particular migration process from the point of view of nationality and, in particular, proximity to ‘Western-ness,’ race, and language as well as how privileges connected to these positions come to matter in the process. The dissertation is an ethnographic interview study in which both migrants and Swedish partners have been interviewed. The interview material consists of a combination of couple interviews and individual interviews. By using affect theories and the concept of queer phenomenology, the dissertation shows how the work that emotions and feelings do in migration processes is connected to gender identity, sexual identity, race and whiteness, nationality, perceived proximity to Western-ness, class, language, and the migration narrative the migrating partner is (or is not) written into by way of the country they have migrated from. This is analyzed in relation to the theoretical frameworks of entanglement, homonationalism, and intimate citizenship. The analysis shows that emotions and feelings structure the migration process for both more privileged and less privileged migrants, but in different ways. The understanding of who ‘is’ a migrant, and the preparedness for the feelings that arise in a migration process, are tied to the positions mentioned above and the privileges these positions give, or do not give, the migrant access to. By focusing on emotions and feelings and what these do, the study also illustrates how the migration process affects the non-migrating partner as this partner engages in emotional labour to ‘make’ the migrating partner ‘Swedish.’ Through their the migrating partner, the non-migrating partner is also aligned in a way that makes them a little bit less ‘Swedish,’ contributing to the non-migrating partner being ‘stopped’ in ways they have usually not experienced before. The study further shows how migration processes produces inequality, and the difficulties that arise when the couples try to live up to the Swedish ideal of the equal relationship. The interviews are analyzed as narratives, and both narratives and storytelling are important throughout the dissertation, not only as the method used in the analysis but as the form of the dissertation, making it a kind of super structure organizing the writing. Writing (how to write accessibly and interesting) and reading (how to write in order to invite an open and active reading) are important aspects of the dissertation.

Abstract:
“oskisihcikêwak/New Traditions in Cree Two-Spirit, Gay and Queer Narratives” works in a field where very little historical or foundational material exists. I provide this groundwork for playwright and novelist Tomson Highway and his younger brother, dancer and choreographer René Highway (Woods Cree), and for the performance artist, filmmaker and painter, Kent Monkman (Swampy Cree). Using Cree methodologies, such as wâhkôhtowin or kinship and miyo-wîcêhtowin or getting along with others, the project illustrates how the Highways and Monkman use their art not only to combat racism and homophobia, but more importantly to show the survivance and vibrancy of Indigenous ways of knowing. By using Cree epistemologies, I show how queer theory and queer-of-colour theory can neglect to address colonisation. In four chapters, I show how the Highway brothers “stood together” to form community for their early and undocumented performances, such as New Song . . . New Dance, and through their involvement with Toronto’s Native Earth Performing Arts, Canada’s first professional Indigenous theatre company. I then compare a script written for a made-for-television movie with what it turned into the novel Kiss of the Fur Queen. I then examine Kent Monkman and his establishment of what David Garneau calls “Aboriginal sovereign display territory” in his paintings and performances, and devote a chapter to the work of his alter ego, Miss Chief Eagle Testickle. My overview of the range of media in which these artists worked (film, dance, theatre, painting, performance art) sees this work as a holistic Cree response to colonisation, including sexual colonisation.

Abstract:
This thesis examines whether the interrelationship of family and gay identity in South Korea is best understood as one of conflict, pitting a traditional, national, and filial constraint against a presumed global, progressive, and individualistic freedom, or whether it requires (or perhaps, in the narratives themselves, already provides) a different, more recursive understanding. This thesis explores the recursivity between gay identity and filial piety among college students in contemporary Korea while also providing a critique of a global gay paradigm that others may argue infiltrates Korean gay discourse. The aim of this ethnography is not just to collect the stories that these young South Korean college men tell about their experiences of being gay and a son, but to trace how my position as a researcher and a friend are shaped by my experiences with other gay Korean men and how those positions are intimately tied to this ethnography as a whole.

Abstract:
Queer people and people of color are two groups that are exposed to much stereotyping and discrimination in the United States. When these two identity labels coincide they sometimes conflict. In this study, five queer persons of color were interviewed on their identities and their life stories, to find out how they create their identities through narratives, negotiating and rewriting the meanings of social categories. Using Johnson's Quare term as inspiration, and analyzing the data with the use of Riessman's performative narrative analysis and Muñoz's Disidentifications, I find several common tropes of identity creation and performance as well as practices of resistance and disidentification. I then discuss the word Queer as used by respondents to label practices and attitudes that can be considered disidentifying.

Abstract:
"Quare Contestations: Bridging Queer, Lesbian, and Feminist Narratives of the Irish Diaspora" examines three sets of biographical and autobiographical narratives about Irish who migrated to the United States in the 19th and 20th centuries. Dwelling primarily in queer studies and diaspora studies, this thesis participates in the construction of a queer Irish diaspora archive by analyzing the spaces of overlap between Irish queer, feminist, and lesbian - together, quare - theory and lived experience in these narratives. In my analysis, I demonstrate the fluidity, movement, and interdisciplinary scope of a quare framework for approaching studies of gender and sexuality in the Irish diaspora context. This thesis intervenes into the work already being done to queer Irish diaspora by examining the contestations of "Irishness" appearing in the narratives that are analyzed, and by in turn contesting and complicating the action and meanings made by "queer" in the existing archive of queer Irish diaspora literature.

Abstract:
This thesis explores the different modes and meanings of queer world making (QWM) of lesbians in Cape Town. Through an analysis of in depth interviews and focus groups it reveals lesbians' constructions of their intersectional and permeable QWM through a series of counter narratives enacted in three interconnected socialities. Generational narratives reveal psycho-social processes of recognition of lesbian desire and coming into a lesbian subjectivity in a range of modes of QWM. Lesbian erotic world making centres their entitlement to enact sexual autonomy and sexual pleasure. Their counter narratives reveal how they simultaneously inhabit and extend normative gender regimes. Their productions of desire reveal a lesbian centred frame of sexual pleasure that extends the erotogenic body beyond the genitalia, innovates and transforms hegemonic libidinal zones, and extends phallocentric culture. Lesbian motherhood as a site of QWM reveals the participants' negotiations, conflict, stress and agency in relation to the 'good mother' discourse that undergirds mothering practices in South Africa. Their counter narratives reveal how they simultaneously resist and re-inscribe heteronormativity in their motherhood practice. Ironically, it is through publicly assuming their sexuality that they are they able to perform 'good motherhood'. They perform private resistance and public complicity with good mother ideologies; and simultaneously centre and destabilize the role of the father. They manage their 'difference' to the heterosexual norm by providing their children with tools to navigate heteronormativity, while simultaneously claiming being an unexceptional family. Their queer place making strategies in everyday spaces in Cape Town demonstrate how they rework racialised notions of belonging to incorporate the queer body (at times ephemerally) to make Cape Town home. Their creation of lesbian social networks and communities, embodied in lesbian social scenes and within their private homes, reveals how Cape Town is experienced as a hybrid space, their contrasting and competing narratives of the city revealing narratives of fractured belonging. QWM reveals how lesbians resist and (re)shape hegemonic identities, discourses and practices, revealing 'a mode of being in the world that is also inventing the world' (Muñoz, 1999: 121). QWM is about borderlands (Anzaldúa, 1987), where one lives within the possibility of multiple plotlines (Clandinin & Rosiek, 2006). Their queer life worlds are permeable to racialised heteronormativities. But their agency reveals multi-vocal and multivalent queer life worlds, enmeshed in the web of racialised, gendered, sexualised, aged and class-based hierarchies in Cape Town. There is no singular way of doing a lesbian subjectivity, no singular utopian notion of a lesbian community. Their differences are located in their varying political perspectives and their social positionalities of privilege and penalty, in short, how they position themselves within the 'politics of belonging' (Yuval Davis, 2006).

Abstract:
This paper aims to present an analysis of the work Diário da queda, written by the author Michel Laub, realizing how contemporary literature unites the times, representing not only the present but also connecting to the historical reality, rescuing facts fragmentary elements of the memory of a past created from identity markers that define man's place in the world. For years, the literature presents how past and present are linked to individual, and collectivity, through the witness of disasters such as the Holocaust. Realizing the traumatic memory - even if it can not be assimilated in its entirety taking into account the impossibility of understanding the fact occurred - as the numerous literary works about the subject. What is presented in this paper are aspects of three representations of traumatic memories starting from three distinct characters of memories that connect individual trauma to a collective trauma. For this, the present work is divided into three parts. The first contextualizes contemporary Brazilian literature in order to realize how the literary work produced in contemporary times is related to its own time. The second part discusses the contemporary narrator and how that postwar narrator reconstructs facts from the temporal distance. The third part seeks to establish a connection between literature and memory in order to realize the consequences that the memory has the fictional narratives focusing on the analysis of Diário da queda memory, and how its narrator, a Jewish descent , makes use of other reports to build his own narrative. From his father's memories - that as a child, had been traumatized by paternal abandonment and lack of identity in the narrator's grandfather's stories, and as an adult, is shot down by a disease that affects memory - and grandfather - former prisoner of the Auschwitz concentration camp that follows an optimistic view in his writings despite having been the victim of one of the greatest atrocities of mankind. Memory is the building fall Diary of narrative is the individual and the collective in the contemporary context.

Complaints regarding student performance are one of the main demands for psychological care of children and adolescents in health services, academic health centers and private practices. Generally, the complaints refer to poor student performance or failure to meet the expectations of parents or teachers. The complaints are thus a polyphonic narrative, which comprises different ideological discourses expressed by the voices of parents, teachers, and classmates, which transmit values, affective states, senses and expectations about what the student is, could and should be. When faced with this complaint, the person acts in the world, formulates beliefs, organizes herself psychologically, takes a stand, negotiates and makes decisions. It is in and through dialogical interacting with those voices that the students develop their selves, building a sense of the self, the other, the social world, and, more specifically, the educational self, which refers to a part of the self that develops within the dialogical relations experienced at school age. In light of this, this study investigated the construction of meanings about complaints regarding adolescents in psychological care due to poor performance at school, emphasizing the dynamics of the educational self. Based on the Cultural Psychology of development, which conceives culture as a set of processes belonging to the individual’s relationship with the environment, an idiographic study of multiple cases was conducted. Two adolescents aged 13 to 17 were interviewed who were in counseling because of complaints regarding their performance at school. One of the participants was referred to a psychologist because of difficulties with reading and writing, and had a diagnosis of dyslexia confirmed. The other participant had difficulties with concentration and attention, but the suspected diagnosis of Deficit Attention Hyperactivity Disorder was discarded. In order to analyze the data, the stories of the participants were organized in school periods, and, in light of concepts such as sign, active internalization, semiotic mediation, the I-position and disruption-transition, excerpts of their narratives were examined in order to understand the dynamics of the educational self within the complaints regarding student performance. The results indicate that such complaints can arise as a disruptive experience in the school life of these students, destabilizing their educational selves and requiring that they take new stands and make up new meanings. Thus, each participant uses different self-regulatory semiotic processes to rescue the dynamic stability of the educational self. In these semiotic processes, the participants resume positions from their childhood or defend the current position in order to maintain or re-establish a sense of continuity of their educational selves.

Abstract:
This thesis focuses on various topics related to transgender identity and culture. Through a combination of ethnographic and secondary research, I studied transgender coming out narratives, trans media representation, transgender performance and identity, and conceptualizations of group and chosen family in a community of trans students, the WKU Transgender and Non-Binary Student Group. The three chapters of my thesis address some of the traditional milestones of a trans person’s acculturation: coming out, constructing one’s newly discovered trans identity, and finding community. Chapter 1 explores coming out as transgender, and the way in in which coming out is valued and discussed within trans communities. Chapter 2 discusses transgender representation, and how gender presentation is contested and complicated by transfolk. Chapter 2 also addresses trans media representation, and the way in which transfolk create their own media representation in the absence of adequate and accurate trans representation in popular culture. Chapter 3 provides an in-depth analysis of the WKU Transgender and Non-Binary Student Group, discusses how the group functions as a chosen family, and explores the way in which group membership helps group members mitigate stigma and deal with trauma.

Abstract:
This thesis examines the notion of misdirection and queer women of colour representation in contemporary fiction and graphic narratives. Its aim is to analyse the gaps in discursive debates that overlook or minimise queer women of colour subjectivities. In so doing, it develops new lines of critical enquiry that bring into dialogue recurring themes of race, gender, class, homophobia, sexual violence and trauma. The thesis discusses five texts published between 1982 and 2008, opening up critical pathways into the interrogation of intersecting oppressions that limit and/or completely eradicate the voices and realities of queer women of colour. Developing the notion of misdirection as both an analytical and performative tool that problematises ‘difference’, this thesis shows that through contemporary framings, queer women of colour representation in literary fiction and comics/graphic narratives can be liberated from the cultural hegemony of whitecentric paradigms. By adding the visual dimension of graphic narratives/comics to unpack the sometimes explicit, but more often than not, coded messages regarding the subaltern in literary fiction, this thesis places within a contemporary context trauma narratives that fail to adequately address the unique experiences of queer women of colour.

The primal idea of this thesis concentrates on the constitution and apprehension of material culture as a textual expression in the dimensions of discursively and semiotics. The archaeological material culture of the Itaparica Tradition, a hunter-gatherer society chronologically dated into the early Holocene period, is perceived as a silent text, which is read and later put into words in the denomination of things, as well as the archaeological writing itself, the results of that reading, which outlines a sketch or an image of this tradition. In this sense, the notion of the documentary materiality and the announcements marked in a discursive form such as: antiquity, scientific, typology and chronology, are instituted in a contusion mode in the announcing discourse about the Itaparica Tradition. The textual materiality, outlined in the foundation discourse of that archaeological culture tradition, echoes in the extension of polyphony of archaeologist like Valentin Calderón, Armand Laroche and Pedro Ignácio Schmitz who, in the ends of the 1960’s and of the 1980’s, were those who imprinted the main sounds in the dialogical relations concerning the comparability of the material culture. However, the voice of Pedro Ignácio Schmitz, an agent in the scientific field of Brazilian archaeology, by talking from the position which he occupies in the institutions of research and teaching, and by reinforcing the “scientific fact” in the elaboration of his texts, assures the affirmation of this archaeological culture tradition. The things of the material culture of the Itaparica Tradition, in a second and more recent generation of texts, where technological studies of the sequence of reduction process are priority, reveal the identification of a semiotic system of the objects, having in mind syntagmatic and paradigmatic perspectives when describing the sequence of the flaking process while creating the objects. Still in the context of signs, in some museums open to public visiting, some objects are exposed which were made, used and discarded by men and/or women of the Itaparica Tradition. In these spaces, predominately the “lesma”, a plane-convex shaped artifact, chosen as a fossil guide of the Itaparica Tradition, is associated to the most known figures of language: the metaphor and the metonymy, recurrent in the discursive narrative, as well as in the textual writings of the Itaparica Tradition in the scientific field of Brazilian archaeology.

The dissertation Queer Theory and Stigma in the Construction of Homoaffection Performances in Life Stories Narratives investigates the construction of homoaffection performances through life stories narrated by four subjects, 20-30 years old and 40-50 years old, with university degree, belonging to middle and high middle class, living in the south zone of Rio de Janeiro. The narratives are analysed through the articulation of Queer Theory and Feminist Studies, Narrative Analysis, positioning and alignment concepts, and stigma. The perspective of this work is interdisciplinary, including concepts given by Social Psychology, Sociology, Anthropology, and History. The research aims at demonstrate that the subjects construe gay performances by displacing, and preserving the cultural matrix of inteligibility, which establishes a mimetic relation among sex-gender-sexual practice. Such displacements and preservations are revealed through positionings and alignments assumed in the act of telling life stories. I also tried to show how stigma affects the interviewer´s daily routine, particularly in terms of emotions, mainly those related to affection in the family. The study brings relevant contributions to gender studies, above all the ones which purpose is the investigation of subjects whose sexual practices are socially stigmatized.

Abstract:

Abstract:

This study is an analysis of the performances carried out by character Katylene Beezmarcky on the eponymous blog and on Twitter. Thus, the study approaches the new technologies as devices that reconfigure the gender performances in contemporaneity. Also, think up communication technologies as ways of mobilizing cultural traits of different groups as a strategy to build a narrative of self in cyberspace. The objective is to observe the uses of different communication platforms (blog and Twitter) by blogger Daniel Carvalho for creating the transvestite character, contextualizing the popularization of character in a contradictory context of great homophobia characteristic of Brazil. The research seeks to articulate notions of gender performativity and matrix heterosexist norms, referring to queer theory, with studies on digital technologies and computer-mediated communication, cyberculture. In developing of the survey, firstly, discusses the socio-cultural notions with regard to genders, sexualities and sexes, then it is considered three key moments of cultural studies of gender: those who sought to explain the submission of women, those who relativize notions hitherto constructed and queer theory. Thus, by adopting a queer perspective, deconstructs the essentialist notion of gender and explain the gender performativity and how this will bring an heteronormative matrix. In a second step, some considerations are made about cyberculture and its implications in the construction of identities in contemporary times. To then approach the object of study so based on Grounded Theory. Thus, identified strategies and uses of online platforms as gender performances and mobilization of identity traits in the construction of a narrative of the studied character. It is perceived that the character has a close relationship with the spaces propitiated by the internet, using much of the material available online. Furthermore, it sets itself up as a trans character of the universe, but not in the same way, Katylene extrapolates becoming something like the stereotype of transvestite.

Abstract:
Background: Gender Variance (GV) is an experience that the gender assigned at birth is different to one’s preferred gender identity. It includes the possibility of a preferred gender identity being different to either male or female. It is reported that around 4000 people per year access care from the NHS in relation to GV (Gender Identity Research and Education Society (GIRES), 2009) and both the physical and psychological elements of these experiences is well documented. However, little research specifically explores how Gender Variant (GVt) people make sense of their experiences and construct meaningful expression of their preferred identity. The aim of this study is to further the understanding of GV with a view to considering the implications for service provision to this population. Methodology: The study employed a qualitative method that explored the narratives of the participants. A purposive sample of seven participants self identified as GVt was recruited for a single interview. The interviews used a topic guide to elicit the narratives that these people tell about their experiences. All interviews were audio-recorded, transcribed, and analysed using a narrative approach to explore what the participants said and the way they said it. This was then situated within the local and broader social contexts within which the narratives exist. Analysis and findings: The findings are presented through a global impression of each of the individual narratives and then through discussion of the similarities and differences in relation to the collective storylines. Particular attention is paid to the identity construction and the emotional experiences that take place during the interviews. These two elements are told within and through each of the storylines. The local and wider narratives available to the participants are used to contextualise the analysis and findings, and so are reported within the analysis. The analysis offers the following findings: i) their first experiences of understanding GV was important, leading them to find others who felt the same to gain a sense of hope of a normal life ii) sharing their experiences with others was an anxiety provoking time and was part of a decision making process about treatment and establishing an acceptable gender expression iii) relationships with family, friends, peers and members of their social context influence sense making and identity constructions of GVt people and typify the challenges faced within their GVt experiences. Some of these challenges were reported as ongoing and illustrated throughout the stories of the day to day lives of the participants iv) for these participants distressing emotional challenges were often situated in the past and participants spoke of ‘overcoming’ challenges. This offered a counter to the more dominant isolation and loneliness narratives within the literature on GVt experiences The findings of the study are discussed in relation to its clinical implications, the strengths and limitations of the methodology, and directions for future research.

Through a queer perspective, this study aims to investigate the representations of LGBT characters in documentaries produced in southern Brazil between 2000 and 2014. By understanding sexuality as a historical device regulation and social order, we discussed how these films appear the representations of gender, body and sexuality of "abject subject" and how to take or not a counteraesthetics and resistance to sexed and gendered norms. Representations as anchors narratives contribute to understanding the processes of imagining and recognize each other, because every film produces representations submitted to the view of a self enunciator, that is, as others see us and design in the film portraits. Postulate that horizon, the intention of this work unfolds in: (1) investigate the ethical stances of the works to articulate the film universe, leading the meanings given to LGBT characters; (2) analyze how the technical and stylistic devices used in the documentary contribute or not to the subversions of discriminatory film portraits; and (3) understand what are the representations that this movie has figured to establish (and down) his speech and queer aesthetics. The choice of the timeline is justified, first, by demarcating the post resumption of Brazilian cinema (NAGIB, 2002). Second, the emergence of a more committed national films with various representations of LGBT people (GARCIA, 2012). Third, it is from the year 2002 there is a greater heating of the national documentary production (Maruno, 2008). And fourth, the configuration of the LGBT movement in the last decade, which struggle for media spaces - including the cinema to give social existence to his speeches against hegemonic (SIMÕES, FACHINI, 2009). 19 mapped movies, analysis procedures underlie the prior literature and the analysis method filmic representation of LGBT characters that make up the filmic scenarios. In the end, it was possible to infer that, in general, the mapped films and analyzed share of an organic commitment to represent these subjects differently, developing an alternative and opposed to negative and stereotypical representations speech, humanizing the subjects that were out of a possible "humanity." Representing these oppositions and resistances to the discourses of prejudiced order, the filmic representations advance, at times, for upgrades and (re) signification of a place that would serve only to reinforce a control and exclusion strategy. However, to constantly seek to oppose the discourses of prejudiced order, some of these movies fall into the trap of reframing representations of these people characters in hegemonic terms, valuing speeches and aesthetic sanitized and aseptic rather reinvent and circumvent the very discursive regime which elects and defines how LGBT should behave to achieve a status of "viable life". While others bet on an identity reification and some open onto views of homosexuality, travestilidade, transsexuality or bisexuality as real critical land deconstruction of sex / gender, representing these subjects through ethnic and identity model. However, there are those films that are not just concerned with opposing the stereotyped portraits, to draw up a positive image of LGBT or reduce your creativity to an identity reification. In addition, betting on a resistance representation is also counterproductive contrasexual and queer.

Abstract:

The post-apocalyptic narrative has been imagined time and again in American literature and popular culture. More often than not, it is presented as a dystopian future in which all signs of humanity and the world as we know it are lost. Through an examination of nature and environment, humanity, and time and futurity within two post-apocalyptic texts—Cormac McCarthy's novel The Road and Robert Kirkman's graphic novel The Walking Dead—this thesis explores the manner in which heteronormativity is presented and, more importantly, the ways in which this type of dominant order can be and are disrupted. Reading against the grain, I explore definitions "normative" and "nonnormative," "human" and "monstrous" within the post-apocalyptic narrative in an effort to suggest that these definitions are complicated in an attempt to present the post-apocalyptic future as a space for multiple potentialities and possibilities of living.

Abstract:
This thesis main objective is to introduce Princesa (1994), written by Fernanda Farias de Albuquerque e Maurizio Jannelli. Although it was written by four hands, the text stems off a narrative of three voices, inside Rome´s prison of Rebbibia: Fernanda Farias, a Brazilian transsexual; Maurizio Janelli, an Italian ex-terrorist; Giovanni Tamponi, a former Sardinian bank robber. Princesa narrates the story of multiple transits between cities, countries, identities, genders, consciences, contexts and bodies and, due to its particular creative genesis, of content, edition and publication, lies on a borderland, which makes us realize, in a similar way, long and intricated journeys through literary theory. Therefore, for the study of this work we resort to the notion of in-between, based on the assumptions of Santiago (1971), Bhabha (1998) and on the theory of translation of Santos (2002); on authorship, genres and literary nationalities; on dialogism with titles belonging to the Italian literature system as to the Brazilian; and lastly, support ourselves on the study of the queer theory, as to the Postcolonial and Cultural Studies, and as far as the narrative interweaves the story of the transformation of a body, to beyond the limits of gender, with matters as belonging,Nation state and contemporary migration.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This thesis contributes to the burgeoning field of the history of sexuality in New Zealand and seeks to distill the more theorised and reflexive understanding of the subjectively understood queer male identity since 1948. Emerging from the disciplines of History and English, this project draws from a range of narratological materials: parliamentary debates contained in Hansard, and novels and short stories written by men with publicly avowed queer identities. This thesis explores how both 'normative' identity and the category of 'the homosexual' were constructed and mobilised in the public domain, in this case, the House of Representatives. It shows that members of the House have engaged with an extensive tradition of defining and excluding; a process by which state and public discourses have constructed largely unified, negative and othering narratives of 'the homosexual'. This constitutes an overarching narrative of queer experience which, until the mid-1990s, excluded queer subjects from its construction. At the same time, fictional narratives offer an adjacent body of knowledge and thought for queer men and women. This thesis posits literature's position as an important and productive space for queer resistance and critique. Such texts typically engage with and subvert 'dominant' or 'normative' understandings of sexuality and disturb efforts to apprehend precise or linear histories of 'gay liberation' and 'gay consciousness'. Drawing from the works of Frank Sargeson, James Courage, Bill Pearson, Noel Virtue, Stevan Eldred-Grigg, and Peter Wells, this thesis argues for a revaluing of fictional narratives as active texts from which historians can construct a matrix of cultural experience, while allowing for, and explaining, the determining role such narratives play in the discursively constructed understandings of gender and sexuality in New Zealand.

Shadix, Casey. "Self-Authoring Gender Performance: A Narrative Analysis of Gay Undergraduate Men." UKnowledge, 2017. http://uknowledge.uky.edu/epe_etds/50.

Abstract:
The perspectives of gay men on college and university campuses is informed by a rich gay social history and extensive roots of community politics. The experiences of gay undergraduate men have been illuminated in segmented ways in scholarly literature to date. This narrative inquiry develops and advances those efforts by exploring how gay undergraduate men construct, experience, and make meaning of their gender as a population ascribing to both liberationist and assimilationist viewpoints. Data for this qualitative study were collected at one public, four-year research university in the southeastern United States in the fall 2015 semester using recorded personal interviews with eleven men. Interviews were digitally recorded and transcribed for data analysis. The men included in the study represent a broad range of personal identity backgrounds, including a variety of college majors and years of experience in university study. Self-authorship and queer theoretical frames were used to analyze participants’ gender interpretations. Findings suggest men do not understand gender in isolation, but in tandem with intersections of familial ethnic and cultural backgrounds, social class status, and involvement on campus. Four major themes of experience that effect self-authorship of gender evolved from narrative analyses: masking, agency, costs, and policing. Implications for higher education professionals, including faculty, staff, and administrators, are discussed. Opportunities for further research in navigating lived experiences of marginalized campus subpopulations are also suggested and explored.
