Bell, Aileen E. "The white knight: Edwin Austin Abbey's "Quest for the Holy Grail" in the Boston Public Library." Thesis, The University of Arizona, 2002. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/278796.

Abstract:
The Boston Public Library was founded on the principle that it would serve the needs of Boston's entire populace, without respect to class, race, or gender. However, despite this democratic ideology, the nineteenth-century library, in its practices and artistic expressions, articulated an elite conception of the perfect American. Edwin Austin Abbey's Quest for the Holy Grail (1890--1902), painted for the library building of McKim, Mead, and White (begun 1883), embodies the cosmopolitan, Protestant, Anglo-Saxon, and masculine values of Boston's elite through its American Renaissance style, its subject, and its iconography. In particular, the figure of Galahad, the hero of Abbey's mural, conforms to models of spirituality, race, and manhood that legitimated the power and social position of the financial, political, and cultural elite that administered and constructed the library.

Abstract:
Creating a competitive advantage is often contextualized as the finding the Holy Grail of strategy. This study examines how Nordic sports businesses incorporate sustainability and how it can be used as a strategy to create a competitive advantage. The climate change debate, and increased consumer environmental consciousness has compelled companies to endeavor for a sustainable development. The sport industry has in general lacking behind in the green transition. However, they are now progressively trying to reconstruct their businesses model to a more sustainable approach. Consequently, more companies are today trying to market their brands to be perceived as sustainable. Although, the challenge is to how position a brand as sustainable without being accused for greenwashing. The thesis structure is based on three segments. Corporate sustainability, sustainability marketing and corporate transformation. The study was based on a qualitative research method, based from six case study interviews with companies from Sweden and Finland. The main research findings was that sustainability has become an increasingly important issue for Nordic sports businesses. The driving force behind the sustainable development is three different stakeholder. Customers, policy makers and employees at the own organization. The Agenda 2030 can be seen as a powerful and tangible set of framework, used to better implement sustainability. Another finding is that sustainability is mostly communicated on product level rather than on corporate level because of the fear of greenwashing accusation. Finally, creating a competitive advantage through corporate sustainability is the main objectives. In order to accomplish that desired outcome, the strategy have to been based on sound businesses practices which depends on how the company is using, and absorbing both internal and external resources and capabilities.

Abstract:
The figure of woman takes leading role in the novels of chivalry Cycle Breton. Emerging as an element that links the narratives of the legendary Arturo, it constitutes a vital and multifaceted adjuvant in the construction of the episodes in an ongoing interaction with the male represented mainly by knights. The Medieval brings up a nuanced picture of the female: the woman socially viewed under various divisions is reflected in the literature of chivalry, as it can be seen in The Quest for the Holy Grail. The female presence is important in the narrative, especially in its tense relationship with the chivalry, now linked to the religious element monasticated, ascetic and celibaterian. The main objective of our study is to investigate how the sociocultural medieval mold, in which was shaped The Quest for the Holy Grail relates to its substrate, the narratives originated of the worldview inherent in the Celtic imagination, thus our analytical bias uprights in the female element in this work. More specifically, it becomes a scope which the image of characters reflects the ideology of clerical didactic and moralistic of the thirteenth century. However it redeens the image of characters imbued with singular duality; that ambiguity which is not only a mark of the medieval paradoxical concerning the female, but also of literary characters designed between two worlds, two distinct ideological poles. In other words, it is about personas who are "bifront fictional beings". Characters located between the inheritances and identities. The research bases were the episodes in which these polidimensionals ladies appear and become adjuvants in literary action, either to cooperate, confuse or impair the knights who undertake the sacred, ineffable and "fortunate" quest for the Holy Chalice which will end the adventures of the Kingdom of Logres

Abstract:
A critical aspect for organizational performance is recruiting “the right” people. Great talent serves as a foundation for great companies and a strong pool of candidates is a prerequisite for success. It is furthermore necessary to have an effective recruitment process in order to attract high quality candidates. Slow-paced recruiting processes may serve as a bottleneck to growth meanwhile an effective recruitment process within an organization speaks volumes about the company. It is a direct reflection of the professionalism and validity of the business while leaving its mark on both current and prospective employees. Referral-based recruiting is often referred to as the “holy grail” of recruiting strategies and is an industry term for when a someone, such as a current employee, supplies a candidate from their own network to the recruiter. The strategy capitalizes on the social and professional networks of people in order to generate candidates and is often combined with rewards to incentivize recommendations. Many claims that the recruitment method yields advantages such as increased candidate quality, retention rate and reduced time to hire etc. However, often, these claims are not peer reviewed and lack the empirical evidence to support these claims. This research aims to contribute with knowledge to what role referral-based recruiting plays within Stockholm and to learn more about how the social processes and human elements affects the outcome. Furthermore, how the recruitment method impacts the assessed quality of the candidate pool and recruitment process. A total of six managers active within recruiting in Stockholm has been interviewed for this research. The managers were each asked to describe and evaluate the hiring of five candidates and their respective recruitment process. The empirical results were analyzed in combination to the theoretical framework. Through the analysis, the conclusion was drawn that referral-based recruiting in fact appears to offer unique advantages in comparison to traditional recruiting strategies, such as job-adverts, headhunting and hiring the services of recruitment firms.

Fitzpatrick, K. "The call to adventure : a quest for the literary Grail." Thesis, Bath Spa University, 2017. http://researchspace.bathspa.ac.uk/11568/.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to reflect on the literary Grail and its continuing relevance, drawing on the development of my novel The Book of Astolat. I will suggest that, as a motif and a narrative device, the Grail represents that which has meaning within the cultural moment of the novelist. The French poet Chretien de Troyes wrote the first Grail romance, Perceval, in the twelfth century, and Thomas Malory revived it for a new readership in the fifteenth century. Both Chretien and Malory were literary innovators who made the story's themes more accessible to their readers. In the centuries since, a significant number of novelists and poets have reimagined the Grail for their own time. This study will consider some of these reimaginings alongside my own intervention. The study is divided into four parts which could be seen to correspond to the Four Hallows, or sacred objects: Cup, Platter, Lance and Sword, which are carried in the Grail procession in Perceval. Each Hallow represents a natural element and corresponds to a human quality. In Jungian analytical psychology there is a corresponding theory of these human qualities as four 'psychological types': 'thinking', 'feeling', 'sensation' and 'intuition'. According to the Jungian model, we each possess these four functions, but one's most developed, or dominant, psychological function defines their personality. In the novelist, perhaps this dominant function also, to some degree, defines their writing. The four central characters in the Book of Astolat: Elayne of Astolat, Elizabeth Wydeville, Thomas Malory and William Caxton, might each be seen to embody one of these psychological types. Between them, there is potential for the narrative to be made whole. Part I: the Cup, introduces the Grail as a literary device and Jungian motif, and also the character of Elayne as the evolution of the tragic heroine The Lily Maid of Astolat. Elayne's psychological type might be defined as 'feeling'. This chapter examines the challenges of structuring a narrative that spans two decades in the fifteenth century, and how writing a commissioned novel which is outcome-driven might impact on the creative practice of the author. Part II, the Lance, introduces my fictional version of Thomas Malory and the historical character that he was modelled from -- using as clues his own writing and that of his biographers. Malory, a poet and early novelist, is assigned the psychological type 'intuition'. Part II pursues the idea that writing a novel is as much an undertaking of the unconscious mind as the conscious. It expands on the discussion about the difficulties of balancing creative and instinctive urges with the expectations of a commercial publisher. Part III, The Platter, examines the inspiration behind my conceit that Elizabeth Wydeville, Edward IV's queen; psychological type: 'sensation', could feasibly have been Malory's patron in writing the Morte D'Arthur. Elizabeth is historically defined by her physical beauty and, in my rendering of her, drawn to the earthly pleasures of wealth and fame. The impact of editorial intervention on The Book of Astolat and the challenges posed by he second significant restructuring of the novel are explored in this chapter. Part IV, The Sword, considers the influence of William Caxton, England's first publisher, had on the Grail story. A shrewd businessman, editor and gifted translator, Caxton is the 'thinker'. Part IV draws some conclusions about the influence of genre-led publishing and the book trade on creative practice, and the Grail as synonymous with the search for meaning, in narrative as in life. As a result of this study I have come to see the literary Grail as an intrinsically personal motif, illuminating the quest inherent in writing an extended narrative and symbolic of the latent wisdom of the psyche. The Grail quest might be in fact a search for something lost; that which has personal meaning.

Abstract:
This thesis explores the representation and meaning of the Grail quest in medieval and modern literature, using the methodologies of historically informed criticism and feminist criticism. In the thesis, I consider the themes of death, gender relations and history in two medieval romances and three modern novels in which the Grail quest is the structuring motif. Comparing two sets of texts coming from different historical periods enhances our understanding of each text, because not only are the modern texts influenced by their medieval precursors, but also our perception of medieval Grail quest romances is modified by modern literature. Studying medieval and modern Grail quest literature side by side also places the phenomenon of modern medievalism into a new perspective; this approach brings out the differences between the Grail quest in texts written in a society that shared a set of Christian values and those written in a post-religious context. Research conducted in the thesis shows that the texts within each group also differ between themselves, depending on the socio-historical circumstances in which the texts were written and read. In the first part of the thesis (Chapters 1-4), I discuss the themes of death, the role of women as spiritual guides, and the relation between familial and world history in two medieval romances. I approach these issues from the perspective of minor characters, women and non-elect knights (who have previously been little studied). I argue that the experiences of these marginal characters are important for understanding both the context in which the romances‟ major characters operate and the representation of questers in modern literature, which often places the unheroic, ordinary or even deviant characters into the limelight. In the second part of the thesis (Chapters 5-7), I consider three modern novels that use the Christian motif of the Grail quest to structure their narratives, examining ways in which modern writers use medieval tropes in a post-religious age. In each chapter, I explore the place of death, relations between the questers and female characters and the impact of family and the world histories on the individual‟s identity in the respective novel. The conclusion brings together the research findings and suggests areas for further research in medieval and modern literature about the Grail quest.

Abstract:
Every organ in the adult mammalian body harbours a rare population of stem cells. Most tumours arise from the transformation of a single stem cell into a cancer stem cell that has the innate capacity to perpetuate through self-renewal, and to generate mature neoplastic cells of a particular tissue through differentiation in vivo. C0133, a 120kOa transmembrane spanning glycoprotein, was the first in a class of novel pentaspan membrane proteins to be identified in both humans and mice, and was originally characterised as a possible marker of cancer stem cells in the haematopoietic system. Since its first discovery, C0133, independently or in combination with other stem cells markers, has been identified in a variety of human tumours including prostate tumours, breast cancers, colon carcinomas, lung cancers, and brain tumours. However, the belief that C0133 may act as a universal marker of cancer stem cells has been met with a high degree of controversy in the neuro-oncology research community as the precise biological role of C0133 has yet to be established. In vivo, glioblastoma multiforme contains poorly vascularised areas associated with decreasing oxygen tension (hypoxia), recently correlated with poor patient prognosis. In this study, a direct link between decreasing oxygen tension and C0133 expression was established. Furthermore, the in vitro hypoxic micro-environment appeared to facilitate a role in the biological behaviour of the glioma, as well as upregulating the CD133 phenotype. Distinct biological differences were also obvious between the CD133+ve and CD133"ve cell fractions; the CD133 protein appeared to not facilitate a role in cellular adhesion; the C0133"ve cell fraction displayed an increased invasive propensity in comparison to the C0133+ve cells; the II CD133+ve cells did not evoke cellular invasion, instead this cell fraction may be inversely linked to this biological process. Whether the CD133 protein precisely defines cancer stem cells within neoplastic glia remains to be clarified. However, this study has made significant progress towards identifying the functional role of CD133.

Goar, James Wells. "An argument without end : the repetitive structure of Jack Spicer's The holy grail." Thesis, University of East Anglia, 2012. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.577649.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of this critical thesis was to offer a new way of reading Jack Spicer's The Holy Grail, and through it, his other books. By recognizing that the serial poem is the repeated struggle between the poet and Spicer's proposed 'Outside' for command of the poem's composition, the reader is able to witness the act which both makes and is the serial poem. Such a study aims to show the complexity of Spicer's stated and unstated poetics as well as to add to the limited critical work on this important poet. Through an examination of Spicer's poetics in light of two contemporaries prominent in his lectures (Charles Olson and AlIen Ginsberg), as well as three predecessors (Andre Breton, T. S. Eliot and Sigmund Freud), and insights drawn from his critics, this investigation provides evidence that although Spicer's topics changed from book to book - and therefore the thematic vocabulary of the poems changed too - each serial poem is a recording of the instance of that particular poem's attempt to speak of its own composition. And, because each poem is a result of a reoccurring battle, each poem attempts to 'articulate' the same thing. These findings force the reader into a new understanding of Spicer's poetics, where the serial poet is no longer a passive vessel for the 'Outside' to control, but is instead an active combatant for control of the poem's composition; through this argument which has no end, the reader is able to witness the confrontation which created the poem; Spicer's serial poems are a blueprint of their own composition and provide instructions for practitioners who wish to compose their own serial poems.

Abstract:
Hydrogen is a wanted energy carrier in a future society less dependent of fossil fuels. This thesis investigates the possibilities of using solar energy to convert water into hydrogen and oxygen, so called artificial photosynthesis. Through this work multiple inexpensive and stable thin film semiconductor electrodes have been produced and used as solar energy absorbers and active sites for direct watersplitting in photoelectrochemical cells. The electrodes have mainly been of nanostructured metal oxide character but also nitrides have been studied. Detailed back ground theory on photoelectrochemistry of semiconductors for hydrogen evolution is given in the summary of the thesis. Nanostructured WO3 electrodes with a quantum yield close to unity were designed and photoelectrochemically characterized. Hematite, α-Fe2O3, nanorods were synthesized and characterized for the aim of water oxidation. The morphology of the hematite nanorods was found to be in favor of the traditional isotropic nanostructured electrodes. Moreover, a unique porous nitrogen doped TiO2 material, photoactive in visible light, was obtained by reactive sputtering. The nitrogen doped material has interesting photoelectrochemical properties and is also promising for related applications such as pollution degradation by photocatalysis. Polycrystalline indium nitride, InN, was produced by reactive sputtering. Electrodes of the as prepared InN as well as electrodes annealed in nitrogen were studied for the aim of photooxidation of water. The electrodes studied are interesting candidates as potential watersplitting electrodes in photoelectrochemical cells, even if all had in common that further improvements and optimizations need to be done.

Bussey, M. P., University of Western Sydney, and School of Contemporary Arts. "Wilderness." THESIS_XXX_CAR_Bussey_M.xml, 1999. http://handle.uws.edu.au:8081/1959.7/665.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis explores the search for the sublime in a contemporary context. The 'Wilderness' can be viewed as a metaphysical space which can only be circumscribed. The dust storms of the Australian continent provides the space where in this experience is located, metaphorically. If the perceptions of reality are to be seen as filtered through the experiences and conditions of the human spirit, the sites or 'Stations' as the author has called them layer and reveal a personal reflection on the timelessness and commonality of the human condition. Space and time seem to collapse folding over and into itself, with a layering of memories and senses. Growing up in the Mallee in Victoria the author's formative years were shaped particularly by the land and the elements. In these works, the sense of identity is enveloped into a rather cosmic sense of being, when the author became inseparable from the red earth, its duststorms, the sense of space and the feeling of isolation. The most constant experience is that of the sense of interconnectedness and of being able to reach down and stroke the land from a distant vantage point. Consequently, the spiritual found in nature has been a re-occurring motif in the author's artistic practice. The location of the duststorm entitled 'God's Breath', is in flying over Adelaide, towards the Mallee. The grid indicates the impositions of perception which is projected on the land by the viewer, often from a cultural or political viewpoint. In this case the author's perception is influenced by the auto-biographical gaze and the duststorm itself becomes a metaphor for memory and interiority. The medium of wax as a preserving substance is used in the artworks, however this can be seen as being an agent of change, able to re-define it's form according to environmental conditions. The land as 'Self' or 'Mother' is not a constant location, but as in the 'Wilderness' can be seen as a spiritual and/or psychological space, a multi-dimensional filter for the senses and the mind, wherein the spirit can be expanded and be still in it's receptiveness. The four wax rectangles are representative of a duststorm, as seen from the interior perspective of the sensory. These works suggest a multitudinal level of experiences, not necessarily definable but open ended in concept. The void as a creative fullness nurtures the more transient moments of the sensory and temporal. From scarification and pain, through breath and loss, the journey through the wilderness results in a melodic tonal experience, indicative of memory, place and identity

Full text
Abstract:
Our perception of the Holy Grail is, for the most part, the result of orthodox views that have dominated literary interpretation. However, the first appearance of the Holy Grail in literature does not conform to the orthodox rules and traditions. In fact, the narrative of Perceval is filled with evidence that points to a very different form of Christianity, one that would have been considered heretical at the time that Chrétien de Troyes was writing it. The twelfth century in France is often called the "Golden Age" of heresies. As Manichaeism and Bogolism swept through the country, they gave birth to a new heresy, that of Catharism. A defining factor shared by these three heresies is dualism, a belief in two gods, one being good and the other evil. These beliefs can all be traced to early Christianity and to groups who believed that they were the true followers of Christ. This study seeks to look at evidence of these beliefs in Perceval, while showing at the same time the implausibility of an orthodox interpretation. Research for this study extends to the beginnings of Christianity, more specifically to Gnostic beliefs. It also looks at other religious influences in France in the eleventh and twelfth centuries, and at the Cathars. It examines what little we know about Chrétien de Troyes and the likelihood that he was influenced by heretical beliefs. In conclusion, it offers a new perspective on the Grail narrative and the mystery that surrounds Chrétien's famously unfinished work. Through exploration of knowledge, the treatment of women, and the famous "grail" scene, we demonstrate the prevalence of Gnostic influences, and how these influences were likely to occur at the time. Although the true essence of the Grail may always remain a mystery, this study offers an "unorthodox" outlook on what has become a predominantly "orthodox" symbol.

The thematic cutting of this dissertation are the Vita Apostolica and the sacramental mystery as life meaning and Christian mission for the people of the European Western World during the Central Middle Ages (11th to 13th centuries). The document to be analysed is the German version of the Arthurian romance The Quest of the Holy Grail, whose original German manuscript was compiled by the end of 13th century. The corpus corresponds to the codex 147 pertaining to the Bibliotheca Palatina Germaniae in Heidelberg, and this is no sheer translation of the original Bretonnic version to Middle German (Mittelhochdeutsch). The present source constitutes an original corpus, a properly German text, although linked up to the Vulgate Cycle (Pseudo-Gautier Map Cycle), which corresponds to the first prosification cycle entailing the Grail narratives. This study aims at scruting a central element of the imaginary concerning the historical experience of people of Western European World at the peak the Central Middle Ages. It is the sacrament, and the comprehension of the sacramental meaning of human life in the sphere of immanence builds up a relevant key to understanding and endowing concrete experiences with meaning. This can be achieved by means of aprehending the shaft element concernig their imaginary.

Abstract:

Cambodia differs from many other developing countries because of one specific asset which is tourism. The number of tourists in Cambodia is currently growing with a rapid pace due to the Angkor site near the city of Siem Reap.

The growing number of tourists has definitely created challenges for the accommodation industry in the Siem Reap region. This has created the need for achieving a delicate balance between the exploration of the region and how much the region can cater for regarding the environment, social and long-term economical benefits. This growth has however brought along many downsides such as economical, environmental, social, cultural, political, and technological. There are no previous studies done about sustainable practice in the accommodation industry in developing countries. This study examines the barriers for the implementation of sustainable practice among accommodation providers in Siem Reap.

The first step is this process was to determine the state of the environment. The second step was to determine the cause of the state followed by determining the process of change for sustainable development which can be regarded as the barriers. Previous studies have concluded that barriers of financial difficulties, the cost of change, lack of resources, the lack of information and support regarding sustainable tourism are common barriers for the implementation of sustainable practice. The barriers can be categorized into industry barriers related to industry specific characteristics and organizational barriers that refer to barriers due to characteristics within the firm.

This report is based on a case study in which hermeneutic and qualitative method was used. The data was based on a content analysis of reports published by the International Development Centre of Japan in cooperation with the Cambodian Ministry of Tourism and 14 interviews with accommodation providers in Siem Reap.

In many areas there was a lack of sustainable practices and many barriers could be uncovered. Barriers included among others lack of financial resources which restricted ownership, low awareness of the environmental state, lack of governmental support; an insufficient educational quality which limits management opportunities for Cambodians and insufficient quality in the environmental friendly products.

This study has expanded the knowledge of barriers for the implementation not only to include environmental sustainable practices but also to include barriers when it economical, social, cultural, political and technological dimensions. These barriers should be considered representative for barriers for the implementation of sustainable practices in the accommodation industry in developing countries, especially in contexts with a similar development pattern as Siem Reap.

Full text
Abstract:

This investigation addresses five constituents—calling, social consequences, imagination, story, and the experience of being gifted. It is grounded in the fundamental human inquiry of identity and purpose and contains both personal and universal answers. Primarily, the author sought to answer one question: How did imagination and story reveal and develop my personal narrative? This led her to Hillman’s (1997) contention that our true biography—the destiny written into our metaphoric acorn—has been stolen. Three questions arose from the primary question used to organize the literature review: (a) How has the use of this knowledge affected my understanding of the evolution of the human story? (b) What evidence is there to identify when our species developed imagination? and (c) Why is imagination undervalued?

There were four sub-questions answered through the personal data: (a) How is a quest or calling revealed? (b) Why is the phenomenon of Neverland essential to human well-being? (c) How did social forces impede the expression of imagination and the process of the original human story? and (d) What does it mean to be gifted?

The method chosen for this work was autoethnography, which, according to Bochner and Ellis (2016), exists in a space between many apparent polarities including facts and meanings, objectivity and subjectivity, and art and science in what Reed-Danahay (1997) explained was how we come to know, name, and interpret personal and cultural experiences. The author was the only participant in this study; however, the meaning emerging from the inquiry could be relevant for many.

The rationale and significance of this study was based on the assumption that the quality of human lives often suffers when people remain disconnected from experiencing their authentic self. The key finding was that through claiming the state of Neverland, as represented by the Peter Pan story, the author was able to connect with who she is and why she is here. This research allowed the author to reclaim her calling, imagination, and story, and acknowledge her giftedness. The ultimate call is for a new paradigm that welcomes and supports the unfolding human destiny.

Abstract:
This essay investigates why the Myth of the Holy Grail continue to occur within popular culture. Myths, tales and legends from ancient times have inspired authors throughout the centuries. The readers are not only served with a spectacular adventure, but the myths also contain messages with a moral and ethical guidance for us as beholders. This particular myth can be found within different media in our time and the essay will attempt to give some answers as to why the myth reappears in new forms over and over again. An analysis is performed by using the methodology of aesthetic reception within reception theory. The material chosen for the analysis is the work of art; The Da Vinci Code by author Dan Brown, where two different media forms will be represented, the novel and the film. The findings in the analysis revealed that the key to understanding the reasons for the occurrence of this medieval myth is the element of a quest that is present within the myth. This ingredient, where you embark on an adventure, will create feelings of excitement for the beholder. A second aspect found is that we as humans have an interest in our history. Therefore, myths and legends from our historical past will be naturally alluring for beholders and especially if they are linked to philosophical questions and ideas that can be applied to our modern society. The success that has followed The Da Vinci Code has its explanation in the fact that Brown has managed to make the myth of the Holy Grail more contemporary, the myth has then been rejuvenated. A suggestion for further research is to perform a study on beholders in focus group interviews in order to validate the findings in the analysis.

Abstract:
This portfolio of work is divided into three sections: an Academic Dossier, a Therapeutic Practice Dossier and a Research Dossier. They contain papers written during the three years of my doctoral training in Psychotherapeutic and Counselling Psychology_ Although the papers have been organised in this way, there are considerable overlaps between the different areas. In fact, I have explicitly examined these overlaps between science and practice, between theory and experience - particularly in the General Introduction, in the Therapeutic Practice Dossier and in the final piece of research I present, whose method incorporates psychotherapeutic process into the process of data collection and analysis. The examination of these overlaps is also echoed in other papers here which bring to attention the constructed nature of the divisions between diagnostic categories in mental health. Mental health diagnosis is al so the predominant object of the deconstructive stance that I have assumed in most of the work here. Deconstructionism has been at the heart of the method of all three papers presented in the Research Dossier, especially the study in the title above, which analyses constructions of diagnosis on the internet. I have also attempted to deconstruct my own clinical development and to an extent aspects of psychotherapeutic models (the relationship in cognitive behavioural therapy and psychotic development in psychoanalytic theory) that I write about in the Academic Dossier. Having deconstructed, I have also attempted to be constructive: for example, I have propose a schematic for the relationship in cognitive behavioural therapy; ] suggest how a post-structuralist framework might be used to enrich cognitive therapy in an inpatient setting; and I model a psychosocial research method that uses skills derived from clinical and theoretical learning as a trainee counselling psychologist.

Abstract:
This paper examines Wolfram von Eschenbach’s juxtaposition of contrary things in Parzival as the beginning of the road to spiritual salvation for Parzival. Men’s quest for fame and honor in the material, Arthurian world is compared to the divine Grail kingdom and the godlike women who shed compassionate, Christ-like tears. Wolfram’s message of peace and love for brother is examined through his use of symbolism, particularly through womens’ tears and turtledove imagery. Parzival, Gâwân and Feirefiz are compared in order to show that the love and quest for personal honor in the Arthurian world is a necessary step on the path to God’s divine love and salvation. Compassion and love for one’s neighbor must be learned before Parzival attains his destiny. How marriage teaches Parzival triuwe and how he demonstrates this characteristic are examined. Romantic love, emulation of women and divine love lead Parzival to his destiny.

Full text
Abstract:
The literary myth of the Grail, created by Chrétien de Troyes, has common roots with thecosmological myth of Babel which explains the plurality of languages. Can we consider themyth of the Grail as a myth of a language lost, sought and finally regained? The adventure of evangelism in Estoire del Saint Grail and the Holy Grail in the Queste, inspired by theCrusades and the Franciscan missions, converge in a dynamic unity symbolized by the Grail, which prevents language . They tend to gather materials of a primordial chaos created underthe aegis of Babel. Chaos, and fragmentation of speech are followed by a unifying voice of aunique origin that orders the world by giving it a meaning. This unification of the speech: aunique speech, God’s speech, for one mouth, that of the Christian people, follows a pattern opposite to Babel. The Estoire does not track the dispersal of a damned people but represents the archetype of a well-managed exodus of a chosen people whose purpose is not to defy butto serve God ; Therefore God grants His people the privilege and the power of words. In the Queste, the beginning of the adventures of the knights of the round table on the day of Pentecost recalls the post-Babel reconciliation offered to the apostles in order to spread thegood word. Pentecost inaugurates the start of the quest for the Holy Grail and also theintroduction of a new voice, the voice of God’s messenger. From the beginning of the story, this new voice as a sign of mystical orientation, destroys any courtly legacy

Bougie, Karine. "Robert de Boron et l’invention du Saint Graal." Thesis, Bordeaux 3, 2014. http://www.theses.fr/2014BOR30043.

Full text
Abstract:
The study of the French romances attributed to Robert de Boron lies within the recent works on self reflexivity in medieval literature and on the rise and spreading of the Holy Grail myth. Robert de Boron has become known as the founder of a new Grail tradition, explicitly related to Jesus Christ and destined to a great popularity. We think that mythopoétique approach, which allows literature to create myths, is consistent with the socio-historical issues of the laity, which is why Robert’s undertaking has spread to the Lancelot-Grail cycle where it served as the foundation of celestial chivalry. This dissertation consists of three main parts. In the first one, we examine the occurrences of the « Holy Grail » expression in the selected books. Furthermore, we go deeper in our analysis of the Grail tradition embodied by Robert de Boron. In the second part of the thesis, we focus of the figure of Robert, by studying some biographical information, his status as a writer and the nature of medieval authority and authorship. The last section of our work gives us the opportunity to set the literary myths in context to show that they are transformed into socio-historical myths through both secular and clerical discourses in the Arthurian romances

Abstract:

This work examines the symbolic essence of the Grail myth, the degree of influence exerted by this myth in portuguese culture and spirituality, and how much this influence can help us to understand the particularities of portuguese mythical-spiritual thought, essentially in its aspect gnostic and esoteric. For this, the pagan sources of the myth are investigated, as well as the Islamic transmission of its esoteric symbolism, its Christianization, and the introduction and circulation of Brittany's matter in the portuguese medieval courts. Then, the mythical-historical elements used by certain literary circles to give Portugal the eschatological status of Portugral or Porto do Graal are discussed. Finally, the residues of the Arthurian legends in the epic poetry of Camões and Pessoa are analyzed, focusing primarily on the symbolism of the initiatic crossing of waters towards the overseas, the Other World, where time and space are different, with a view to disembarking in the Grail Kingdom and revealing to the world the “New Eucharist”, which is the union of the man-god with himself, the anthropos of Jungian mitananalysis; man, in short, interior, spiritual, integral.

Gutierrez, Christina Lynn. "Staging medievalisms : touching the Middle Ages through contemporary performance." 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/2152/21507.

Full text
Abstract:
Staging Medievalisms analyzes how twentieth- and twenty-first century performance constructs the Middle Ages. This work is in conversation with medievalism, the academic field concerned with the diverse ways post-medieval societies have re-imagined medieval narratives and tropes, often in service of their own values. As a result of centuries worth of re-definition, the term "medieval" is unstable, referring simultaneously to a fairytale prehistory and a dark age of oppression. I argue that performance, both in theatrical productions and in medieval-focused tourist spaces, allows an affective connection between the medieval past and the present, casting the Middle Ages as an inherently flexible backdrop for contemporary political and social concerns. In tourist spaces and plays about the Middle Ages, the performing body becomes the site where the medieval and the modern touch. I conduct close readings of six productions and three public spaces which stage the Middle Ages, examining which particular versions of the medieval they create, how they stage moments of historiographical contact, and how each uses the medieval to imagine their own historical contexts. Chapter one provides an overview of medievalism and its connection to performance studies, and subsequent chapters take up contemporary productions of medieval history, legend, and fantasy, respectively. Chapter two examines three recent stagings of Shakespeare's medieval history play Henry V, a work which stages two opposing versions of the medieval simultaneously. The Royal Shakespeare Company (1994), National Theatre (2003), and Austin, Texas (2009) productions offer commentary on modern warfare, using Henry's medieval battles as both evidence and setting. Chapter three analyses representations of the Holy Grail in Mort d'Arthur (2010), Spamalot (2005), and Proof (2001). Each re-imagines the Grail as a symbol of achievement and power, drawing different conclusions about contemporary society's need for the mystical. Chapter four takes up performances of the Middle Ages in the public sphere, examining how Disneyland, Medieval Times, and the Renaissance Faire offer visitors varying degrees of freedom to experience the medieval through their own bodies. Throughout, I argue that performance encourages affective connections to the medieval past as a reflection of contemporary desires.

Abstract:
The question leading to this study is whether the facts and theories pertaining to the Bible and Jesus Story as presented by The Authors (H Schonfield, D Joyce, B Thiering, M Baigent, R Leigh, H Lincoln; M Starbird, and D Brown) could be verified by the Archaeology evidence. I have adopted a multidiscipline and holistic approach considering information gathered from all media sources to ascertain what theories, if any could replace the traditional Jesus Story of the New Testament. I considered whether the alternative theories or traditional theories were believable due to the evidence presented by Biblical Archaeology or by the techniques used by The Authors in presenting their facts. By using Thouless’ system of Straight and Crooked thinking I was able to ascertain that the theories used in the novels written by The Authors may have been persuasive, but lacked substance.
