Purpose Collaborative information search (CIS) is a growing and significant research area. Query formulation and reformulation is an important search strategy in information search. However, limited research has investigated query behavior during CIS. The purpose of this paper is to characterize collaborative query reformulation (CQR) by exploring the sources of collaborative query (CQ) terms and the types and patterns of CQR in the context of tourism information search. We study a general framework for query rewriting in the presence of an arbitrary first-order logic ontology over a database signature. The framework supports deciding the existence of a safe-range first-order equivalent reformulation of a query in terms of the database signature, and if so, it provides an effective approach to construct the reformulation based on interpolation using standard theorem proving techniques (e.g., tableau). Since the reformulation is a safe-range formula, it is effectively executable as an SQL query. At the end, we present a non-trivial application of the framework

Abstract:
Source code retrieval is a branch of text retrieval which helps developer find a piece of code from the code base. The developer can obtain the required code from the code base by issuing a query on the source code base. Generally, a developer who has been working on the code base since a long time will know how to formulate his/her query in order to get a good search result. A developer who is novice to the code base will not know what terms he/she has to include in query to obtain a good search result. In fact, a system should allow developer to issue natural language queries. This arises a

Abstract:
Query recommendation is an essential part of modern search engine which aims at helping users find useful information. Existing query recommendation methods all focus on recommending similar queries to the users. However, the main problem of these similarity-based approaches is that even some very similar queries may return few or even no useful search results, while other less similar queries may return more useful search results, especially when the initial query does not reflect user’s search intent correctly. Therefore, we propose recommending high utility queries, that is, useful queries

<p>Semantic search is a research area in which the goal is to understand the users intended meaning of the query. This requires disambiguation of the user query and interpreting the semantics of the query. Semantic search would thus improve the users search experience through more precise result sets. Moreover, ontologies are explicit conceptualizations of domains, defining concepts, their properties, and the relations among them. This makes ontologies semantic representations of specific domains, suitable to use as a basis for semantic search applications. In this thesis we explore how suc

While technological advances have enabled us to access extensive document collections, formulating a query which is well designed for an information retrieval (IR) system remains a difficult task. A number of methods have been developed to support user query formulation and reformulation based on terminological feedback. Terminological feedback offers a set of terms that can be used to modify an existing query. This also gives users an opportunity to transform a part of the query reiformulation process to term selection: a potentially simpler task. There is, however, much room for investigatin
