Abstract:

Prior research has examined the quinceañera’s role in Hispanic female adolescents’ identity development processes, but few have examined the quinceañera as a site of group-level continuity and change whose relevance persists in a post–Great Recession economy. This gap in the family science literature reflects a larger epistemic shortcoming stemming from the field’s use of White mainstream family processes as the reference from which to operationalize normative family values, attitudes, and behaviors. Using historical and demographic data in tandem with contemporary literature on the consumptive behaviors of Hispanic families, we conceptualize the quinceañera as a consistently symbolic, yet flexibly enacted ritual performed by diverse U.S. Hispanic families as they co-construct family identity against the backdrop of changing immigration patterns, fertility rates, and financial practices.

Abstract:

When I returned to San Quintín, México during the spring-breaks of 1996-1997, ten years after my initial work in the region, I visited the Indigenous barrio of the Nueva Región Triqui (New Triqui Region). This is a village with 2000 Oaxacan Triqui Indians distributed into 300 households. During the two weeks I stayed in this village, I observed that it does not remarkably differ from most Oaxacan Indian towns. Every house possesses a garden in which corn, beans, pumpkins, and healing herbs are grown. In some cases these houses have both the temascal (traditional steambath) and the reed constructed kitchens outside, while inside they have an adobe fireplace and a waist-loom for weaving traditional cloth. Furthermore, life in the Nueva Región Triqui seems to go by like in any other Indian village of Oaxaca. On my first walk through this community, I witnessed three events celebrated in the most typical ways of the Oaxacan Indians from the Mixtec region: a quinceañera, a collective baptism, and a funeral. The next day, I met a group of musicians who played the typical Oaxacan chilenas, and witnessed a cleansing practiced by a curandera. So, after those visits I could have concluded that the Nueva Región Triqui is just another typical Oaxacan Indian town. However, in actuality this village is located in San Quintín, Baja California, about 1,800 miles from Oaxaca.

A manera de un retrato etnográfico, el presente artículo da a conocer los resultados de una investigación realizada en el Distrito Federal, México, a catorce señoritas que organizaban su fiesta de quince años. El objetivo es acercar al lector con una realidad observada, sin embargo, ninguna de las situaciones aquí descritas puede generalizar las diversas formas de celebrar a las quinceañeras en México, América Latina y Norte América. Asimismo, el análisis de los resultados presentados invita a sus lectores a reflexionar sobre la “tradición” de este ritual tan popular.

Abstract:

En el presente artículo se discute el tema de la articulación entre el género, la edad y la clase social en los procesos de construcción subjetiva que ocurren durante el tránsito de la infancia a la adolescencia. A partir de la relación entre los conceptos de posiciones de sujeto, interpelación, performatividad y cita, se analiza cómo esta transición para las adolescentes mexicanas es asociada con la celebración de los 15 años, a pesar de que muchas familias rechazan el patrón de fiesta típica y las normas de género vinculadas a ese patrón. Como material empírico para la discusión, se presentan dos casos de quinceañeras que, aunque no hacen una fiesta típica, tanto ellas como sus familiares se sienten interpeladas por la llegada de los 15 años, reconocen la existencia de una tradición asociada a este momento de la vida, manifiestan algún tipo de rechazo a dicha tradición, debaten acerca de formas alternativas de celebrar, y facilitan procesos de transición subjetiva hacia la feminidad adolescente, o bien, se resisten a ellos, postergándolos.

Abstract:

El estudio usa una metodología cualitativa . descriptiva - analítica, tiene por finalidad interpretarlos significados del riesgo sexual de las adoles¬centes de Lima que acuden a espacios de diversión dentro de un contexto donde hay alcohol y drogas. La muestra está compuesta por 64 adolescentes mujeres entre los 15 y 18 años. El crite¬rio de selección se basó en informantes clave. Se realizaron 8 grupos focales en una academia preuniversitaria del centro de Lima. La primera embriaguez se produciría al¬rededor de los 15 años. Los espacios son: el término del colegio(reuniones programadas), la fiesta de promoción, los quinceañeros y los paseos de promoción. Los amigos se constituyen en el grupo social donde se dan por primera vez el ofrecimiento y/o la disponibilidad para el consumo de la marihuana. La Pasta básica de cocaína (PBC) es la droga menos cercana a las adolescentes, estando su consumo relacionado con actitudes negativas y de rechazo definidas, a diferencia del éxtasis que se está extendiendo cada vez más hacia sectores más populares como el C y D, apartándose rápidamente de los sectores A y B donde inicialmente apareció. Coexisten dos discursos sobre la virginidad: uno el que considera que ésta debe cuidarse, y el otro que le resta valor; otorgando más relevancia a las cualidades personales en una relación. Sin embargo, las que coincidían con la primera posición manifestaban no saber que podría pasar con su virginidad en el futuro. La consecuencia de tener relaciones sexuales más temida por estas ado¬lescentes es el embarazo, antes que el VIH. Llama la atención que la mayoría de las adolescentes entrevistadas ha sufrido algún tipo de agresión sexual. Se encontró además que las relaciones de pareja se dan en un contexto de di¬versión y existirían tres tipos vínculos: los llamados "agarres", "vacilones" y enamorados.
