Abstract:
AbstractNation-wide data in Japan on births and prenatal deaths of 16 sets of quintuplets during 1974-1985 were analysed. Among the 16 sets, 3 sets were liveborn, 8 were stillborn, and 5 were mixed, with a stillbirth rate of 0.64 (51/80). Effects of sex, maternal age and birth order on the stillbirth rate were not considered because of the small sample size. Effects of gestational age and birthweight on stillbirth rate were also examined. The mean weight of the 40 quintuplet individuals was 1,048 g.

Abstract:
AbstractThis study investigated the degree of risk of handicap in twins, triplets, quadruplets and quintuplets and associated factors, and examined the clustering tendency of handicaps. The sample was recruited from the Kinki University Twin and Higher Order Multiple Birth Registry. This panel consisted of 705 pairs of twins (1410 twins), 96 sets of triplets (287 triplets excluding 1 infant death), 7 sets of quadruplets (27 quadruplets excluding 1 infant death), and 2 sets of quintuplets (10 quintuplets), all of whom were born after 1977. The incidence of handicap was 3.7% in twins, 8.7% in triplets, 11.1% in quadruplets, and 10.0% in quintuplets. The risk of prodicing at least 1 handicapped child was approximately 1 in 13 pairs of twins (7.4%), 1 in 4 or 5 sets of triplets (21.6%), and 1 in 2 sets of quadruplet and quintuplets (50%). There was a significantly higher clustering tendency of handicaps in twins and triplets compared with the expected frequency calculated from the incidence rate of handicap. Four significant risk factors for subsequent handicap were found by logistic regression: gestation number, shortening of gestational age, premature rupture of the membrane, and toxemia during pregnancy.

Abstract:
AbstractData for sets of multiples under 16 years of age were obtained from the population censuses of Japan in 1990 and 1995. These numbered 147,188 twin pairs, 1410 sets of triplets, 59 sets of quadruplets, and 3 sets of quintuplets in 1990, with the corresponding numbers in 1995 being 141,354, 2,211, 136 and 12, respectively. The total number of sets of multiples was 148,660 in 1990 and 143,713 in 1995. Twinning, triplet, quadruplet and quintuplet rates were estimated for each age. Rates of monozygotic twins and triplets remained constant age by age up to 15 years, while the dizygotic twinning rate, and rates of di- and tri-zygotic triplets decreased over the same period. Quadruplet and quintuplet rates also decreased. The accuracy of estimating number of multiples from census data is discussed using data on vital statistics.

Abstract:
AbstractPreterm birth following cervical dilatation is the greatest threat to infants of a multiple pregnancy. Lacking reliable data concerning the effect of prophylactic cerclage, we compared a study group to controls for maternal and perinatal outcome. Sixteen of 94 triplet-, 9 of 18 quadruplet/quintuplet-pregnancies, treated with prophylactic cerclage, were retrospectively compared to those without cervical cerclage respectively. Kruskal-Wallis test and Mann-Whitney-U test were performed as non-parametric one way analysis of variance. For the analysis of frequencies Chi Square test or Fisher’s exact test were performed. Odds ratio with 95% confidence interval was used to compare the need for intravenous tocolysis as well as perinatal morbidity and mortality. Gestational age at delivery was not different from the controls in all studied groups. Birth weight revealed a 200g dominance for the “no cerclage-triplets”, while this significant difference was inverted for quadruplets/quintuplets (1245g vs. 1069g). With respect to gestational age at birth, need for hospitalisation or medical intervention no benefit was achieved. Moreover, perinatal outcome analysed by arterial pH, APGAR-Score and perinatal mortality was not altered by a prophylactic cerclage. Perinatal morbidity for quadruplets and quintuplets was even higher in cerclage pregnancies. Therefore, these retrospective results disclaim a positive impact of cervical cerclage on pregnancy management or perinatal outcome in multifetal pregnancies.

Abstract:
Repetitive activation of a skeletal muscle results in potentiation of the twitch contractile response. Incompletely fused tetanic contractions similar to those evoked by voluntary activation may also be potentiated by prior activity. We aimed to investigate the role of stimulation frequency on the enhancement of unfused isometric contractions in rat medial gastrocnemius muscles in situ. Muscles set at optimal length were stimulated via the sciatic nerve with 50-μs duration supramaximal pulses. Trials consisted of 8 s of repetitive trains [5 pulses (quintuplets) 2 times per second or 2 pulses (doublets) 5 times per second] at 20, 40, 50, 60, 70, and 80 Hz. These stimulation frequencies represent a range over which voluntary activation would be expected to occur. When the frequency of stimulation was 20, 50, or 70 Hz, the peak active force (highest tension during a contraction − rest tension) of doublet contractions increased from 2.2 ± 0.2, 4.1 ± 0.4, and 4.3 ± 0.5 to 3.1 ± 0.3, 5.6 ± 0.4, and 6.1 ± 0.7 N, respectively. Corresponding measurements for quintuplet contractions increased from 2.2 ± 0.2, 6.1 ± 0.5, and 8.7 ± 0.7 to 3.2 ± 0.3, 7.3 ± 0.6, and 9.0 ± 0.7 N, respectively. Initial peak active force values were 27 ± 1 and 61.5 ± 5% of the maximal (tetanic) force for doublet and quintuplet contractions, respectively, at 80 Hz. With doublets, peak active force increased at all stimulation frequencies. With quintuplets, peak active force increased significantly for frequencies up to 60 Hz. Twitch enhancement at the end of the 8 s of repetitive stimulation was the same regardless of the pattern of stimulation during the 8 s, and twitch peak active force returned to prestimulation values by 5 min. These experiments confirm that activity-dependent potentiation is evident during repeated, incompletely fused tetanic contractions over a broad range of frequencies. This observation suggests that, during voluntary motor unit recruitment, derecruitment or decreased firing frequency would be necessary to achieve a fixed (submaximal) target force during repeated isometric contractions over this time period.

AbstractSource of data is “Survey on Socio-Economic Aspects of Vital Events – Plural Births in 1975”, including 12,392 twin pairs, 124 triplet sets, 7 quadruplet sets and 1 quintuplet set. Feal deaths were 3,285 for twins, 141 for triplets, 17 for quadruplets, and 5 for quintuplets, among which the numbers of birth defects were 78, 3, 0, and 0, respectively. Concordant twin pairs with the same category of birth defect were 20 among 56 pairs (0.36). As for the remaining 36 pairs, 2 pairs had different category of birth defects, 27 pairs had liveborn cotwins, and 7 pairs were both fetal deaths among which a twin had birth defect. The second-born twins had birth defects more frequently than the first-born twins among fetal deaths (28 vs 6).

Abstract:
AbstractThe astounding rise in multiple births in the United States continues. We analyzed live birth files from the U.S. National Center for Health Statistics. Twin, triplet, quadruplet, and quintuplet+ rates were calculated for the period 1971–1977 and for each year between 1990 and 1998. Triplet rates were also computed within categories of mother's education and age. The twin rate increased from 1.8% in 1971–77 to 2.8% in 1998. The rate of triplets increased 5.9-fold, quadruplets 11.9-fold, and quintuplets+ 5.3-fold between 1971–77 and 1998. Increases in triplet rates were much more marked among births to university-educated women and women 30 years and older. Among women 45 years and older, the triplet rate was approximately fifty times higher in 1998 than in 1971–77. This group of older women (≥ 45 years) had the highest multiple birth rate in 1998.

Liermann, Adriane. "Massive stars in the Galactic Center Quintuplet cluster." Phd thesis, Universität Potsdam, 2009. http://opus.kobv.de/ubp/volltexte/2009/3722/.

Full text
Abstract:
The presented thesis describes the observations of the Galactic center Quintuplet cluster, the spectral analysis of the cluster Wolf-Rayet stars of the nitrogen sequence to determine their fundamental stellar parameters, and discusses the obtained results in a general context. The Quintuplet cluster was discovered in one of the first infrared surveys of the Galactic center region (Okuda et al. 1987, 1989) and was observed for this project with the ESO-VLT near-infrared integral field instrument SINFONI-SPIFFI. The subsequent data reduction was performed in parts with a self-written pipeline to obtain flux-calibrated spectra of all objects detected in the imaged field of view. First results of the observation were compiled and published in a spectral catalog of 160 flux-calibrated $K$-band spectra in the range of 1.95 to 2.45,$mu$m, containing 85 early-type (OB) stars, 62 late-type (KM) stars, and 13 Wolf-Rayet stars. About 100 of these stars are cataloged for the first time. The main part of the thesis project was concentrated on the analysis of the WR stars of the nitrogen sequence and one further identified emission line star (Of/WN) with tailored Potsdam Wolf-Rayet (PoWR) models for expanding atmospheres (Hamann et al. 1995) that are applied to derive the stellar parameters of these stars. For this purpose, the atomic input data of the PoWR models had to be extended by further line transitions in the near-infrared spectral range to enable adaequate model spectra to be calculated. These models were then fitted to the observed spectra, revealing typical paramters for this class of stars. A significant amount of hydrogen of up to $X_text{H} sim 0.2$ by mass fraction is still present in their stellar atmospheres. The stars are also found to be very luminous ($log{(L/L_odot)} > 6.0$) and show mass-loss rates and wind characteristics typical for radiation-driven winds. By comparison with stellar evolutionary models (Meynet & Maeder 2003a; Langer et al. 1994), the initial masses were estimated and indicate that the Quintuplet WN stars are descendants from the most massive O stars with $M_text{init} > 60 M_odot$ and their ages correspond to a cluster age of 3-5,million years. The analysis of the individual WN stars revealed an average extinction of $A_K =3.1 pm 0.5$,mag ($A_V = 27 pm 4$) towards the Quintuplet cluster. This extinction was applied to derive the stellar luminosities of the remaining early-type and late-type stars in the catalog and a Hertzsprung-Russell diagram could be compiled. Surprisingly, two stellar populations are found, a group of main sequence OB stars and a group of evolved late-type stars, i.e. red supergiants (RSG). The main sequence stars indicate a cluster age of 4 million years, which would be too young for red supergiants to be already present. A star formation event lasting for a few million years might possibly explain the Quintuplet's population and the cluster would still be considered coeval. However, the unexpected and simultaneous presence of red supergiants and Wolf-Rayet stars in the cluster points out that the details of star formation and cluster evolution are not yet well understood for the Quintuplet cluster.

Solomon, Adrian. "A quintuple helix framework for the implementation of resilient and green road freight transportation in South East Europe." Thesis, University of Sheffield, 2016. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/14328/.

Full text
Abstract:
The unpredictable nature of extreme weather-induced disruptions is posing tremendous pressure on nowadays supply chains. Longer transports, increased fuel consumption, hazardous wastes, unsatisfied clients, social unrest and risks, damage to the environment, infrastructure and assets are only few of the pressuring outcomes. This situation becomes even more critical when it comes to freight transportation which is much closer to societies and to the environment. In order to counteract this, the concept of supply chain resilience is being adopted towards identifying solutions for the supply chains to recover after such a disruption took place. However, institutions tend to leverage (more) cost minimization as the key indicator of resilience efficiency against environmental and social indicators – and this is highly visible especially in the lower income region of South East Europe (SEE). This leverage is slowly becoming obsolete, as the global literature, policy and practice are consistently demanding for the need of resilient and green supply chain management (RGSCM) and implicitly of resilient and green freight transportation (RGFT). This is why, institutions can no longer emphasize economic benefits against societal and environmental value when dealing with resilience and thus, the proper implementation of RGFT/RGSCM strategies becomes critical. RGSCM and RGFT implementation have often been studied through various theoretical frameworks such as the ecological modernisation theory (EMT) for understanding how eco-innovations emerge, diffusion of innovation theory (DIT) for investigating how eco-innovations diffuse, complex and adaptive systems theory (CAST) for examining how resilience and self-adaptation is being achieved and finally, institutional and stakeholders theory (INT and ST) for reasoning how institutions adopt eco-innovations triggered by stakeholder groups (co-evolution). However, the key literature gap that this research aims to fill resides in the lack of existence of a converged framework for all the five theories with focus on understanding how institutional level RGFT/RGSCM practices can be implemented and leveraged at the stakeholder (mesosystem) level in order to ensure a wider scale impact. Such theoretical convergence gap becomes tangent with the recently developed quintuple helix model where eco-innovations, institutions, society and the environment are being seen as the key connected pillars of eco-modernisation in nowadays society. In this context, the aim of this thesis is to propose a quintuple helix framework for the implementation of RGFT/RGSCM during weather induced disruptions in SEE by underpinning how institutional interactions and RGFT/RGSCM eco-innovation implementation can scale-up to stakeholder level. In order to support this convergence and the theoretical framework assumptions, a three-stage mixed-method approach has been adopted at the South East European level (Stage one – qualitative interviews, N=6; Stage two – qualitative and quantitative semi-structured exploratory & confirmatory survey, N=311; Stage three – focus groups only on Greece in order to enable higher specialization of the findings, N=3 and modelling and simulation, N=3). Overall, the key outcome that has been revealed is that quintuple helix co-creation, goal and key performance indicators (KPI) alignment of all stakeholders and capacity to transform (eco-modernize) of institutions are the key enablers of fast eco-innovation (RGFT/RGSCM) diffusion and implementation. The additional (key) research outcomes are: firstly, disruptive eco-innovators are limited and most of the other institutions are primarily adapting/transforming; secondly, there is high willingness to leverage eco-innovations at the stakeholder level; thirdly, the RGFT/RGSCM eco-innovations will be based on the smart specialization areas of the country/region; fourthly, by having the inner desire to excel, institutions will continue to eco-innovate (mostly through steady transformation) – ensuring thus the sustainable change at the stakeholder level (by putting pressure on the late adopters). Lastly, a concerning element in this area resides in the existence of very isolated stakeholder groups which may not co-evolve. This research brings academic contribution by exploring each of the five theories and by proposing their convergence built upon the quintuple helix model. Additionally, this research provides advancements in the utilisation of mixed-methods research in RGFT/RGSCM. Similarly, this research provides practical benefits to institutions in terms of offering guidance and solutions for RGFT/RGSCM implementation. Policy-wise, this research enables better policy formulation especially in terms of triggering quintuple helix co-creation towards enhanced societal and environmental outcomes (impacting thus on society as well). Finally, the core limitations of this thesis which should be addressed in future studies consist of the high level approach in terms of converging the five theories as well as in the manner in which the triangulation is being performed (the three stages are not performed integrally and then triangulated – being rather integrated as means of one stage informing another).

"SUSTAINABILITY AND INNOVATION: AN ANALYSIS FROM A SYSTEM PERSPECTIVE IN AGRICULTURE." Thesis, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10388/ETD-2015-02-2077.

Full text
Abstract:
This study was carried out to examine how innovation can support sustainability and why these two concepts are important for agriculture. To do this, it was necessary to explore the meaning of sustainability and innovation for sustainability, the barriers and opportunities in building a local innovation system by identifying learning interactions, and the role of higher education institutions in achieving sustainability. Since there has been no empirical study of innovation and sustainability in agriculture from a bottom-up perspective, a qualitative case study with multi-methods approach was conducted. The field study took place in Yucatán, México, in the Conkal community over a period of three months in 2013. This research was comprised of in-depth interviews with stakeholders involved in habanero chile farming to identify their perceptions, challenges, and the nature of their willingness and practice of innovation and sustainability. Both Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats (SWOT) and document analysis were used to complement the interview evidence. The results highlight the interpretations of sustainability principles (economic, ecological, and social) and the flow of knowledge and learning interactions that are occurring in the habanero chile product system. To increase innovation capacity, the integration of multiple local players is important to create local innovation systems that can also achieve sustainability principles. The study suggests that learning interactions and knowledge networks at the local level can be used to develop and disseminate technological and non-technological innovation for social, economic, and ecological improvement in farming. Such improvements should be supported by higher education institutions by generating, transferring, and applying ideas, resources, and programs to local communities. Higher education institutions should work towards the integration of various types of knowledge and increase engagement with local farming needs. However, the willingness and trust of individuals as well as the lack of leveraging opportunities to innovate for sustainability were perceived as barriers. The key contribution of this study is to highlight and promote how innovation systems at small scales can support sustainability that may lead to a quintuple helix model (one that integrates the following five components: university, government, industry, civil society, and natural environment). The most important aspect of this study is the suggestion that the integration of social, ecological, and economic goals in innovation systems can help shape an approach that can reorganize innovation for sustainability. Such suggestions are described in the results and discussion sections.

In recent years, human activities, population growth and the concentration of population in urban areas have been accompanied by natural resource depletion, environmental degradation and other social problems. We realize that while pursuing economic development, we should also consider the balance between the development orientation and the fairness of the generations, and regard sustainable development as the pursuit of goals. The purpose of this paper is to apply the quintuple bottom line assessment framework to explore sustainable development of Taiwan Counties and Cities, compare the impact of sustainable development goals on sustainability assessment. Based on the quintuple bottom line of sustainable development, this study considers the five dimensions – Society, Environment, Economy, Governance and Peace, and Diversity Participation to conduct city sustainability assessment. The main results of this paper are as follows: First and foremost, there is a correlation between promoting community colleges, paying attention to convenience stores selling liquor and tobacco, encouraging volunteer participation, and establishing community development associations. We can help the city move towards sustainable development through engaging volunteers, organizations, and other stakeholders in social or environmental issues. Besides, in the sustainability assessment of this study, the sustainability scores of Taipei City and New Taipei City were the best, and Pingtung County was deviating from sustainability. Last but not least, there are many factors that affect the establishment of the indicator system, such as the basic concepts of the index system construction, the cited literature, the author's subjective consciousness, and so on. Therefore, this paper compares the results with the relevant survey results to discuss the impact of using different indicators on the city development evaluation. In addition, the study suggests that thinking about what kind of city is sustainable, or according to the urban governance policy to explore urban development.

The low-coordinate and low-valent quintuple bonded dimolybdenum complex, Mo2[μ-η2-HC(N-2,6-iPr2C6H3)2]2 (1), displays remarkable reactivity toward main group reagents. Undergo an oxidative addition of 1 equiv of diphenylzinc to the Mo-Mo quintuple bond of 1, the dimolybdenum complex, (m-ZnC6H5)(1-C6H5)Mo2[m-2-HC(N-2,6-iPr2C6H3)2]2 (2) is afforded. Subsequent treatment of 2 with 1 equiv of benzyl bromide gives a novel dimolybdenum complex, [m-2-HC(N-2,6-iPr2C6H3)2]Mo[-2:2-C6H5Zn(C6H5)Br]Mo[m-2-HC(N-2,6-iPr2C6H3)(N-2-iPr-6-CH(1-CH2)CH3-C6H3)] (3), where one Br atom coordinates between molybdenum and zinc and the molybdenum center accompanies with C-H bond activation of methyl groups. Addition of 4 equiv of diphenylzinc to 1 leads to the formation of the quadruply-bonded dimolybdenum complex, (1-C6H5)2Mo2[m-2-HC(N-2,6-iPr2C6H3)2]2 (5), which functionalized of the Mo-Mo quintuple bond by two phenyl groups. Reaction of 1 with 2 equiv of dimethylzinc affords (m-2:1-Zn(CH3)2)2Mo2[m-2-HC(N-2,6-iPr2C6H3)2]2 (6), which is unstable in solvent at room temperature, it transforms into (1-CH3)2(THF)Mo2[m-2-HC(N-2,6-iPr2C6H3)2]2 (7) quickly. Each molybdenum has one phenyl group coordinates on it, and there is weak agostic interaction between the hydrogen atom of methyl group and the molybdenum center. Treatment of 1 with 2 equiv of trimethylaluminum gives the unstable complex, [m-(CH3)2Al(CH3)2]Mo[m-2-HC(N-2,6-iPr2C6H3)(N-2-iPr-6-CH(1-CH2)CH3-C6H3)] (m-H)Al(CH3)[m-2-HC(N-2,6-iPr2C6H3)2]Mo(1-CH3) (8). The formation of 8 is through the carboalumination of 1 equiv of trimethylaluminum to the Mo-Mo quintuple bond accompanies with a C-H bond activation of methyl group. Complex 8 changes into the intermediate complex 9, which then transforms into Mo(Solvent)[m-2-HC(N-2,6-iPr2C6H3)2](m-CH3)Mo[m-2-HC(N-2,6-iPr2C6H3)(N-2- iPr-6-CH(1-CH2)CH3-C6H3)] (Solvent = THF (10), Et2O (11)) when it contacts solvents like tetrahydrofuran or ether. Complex 10 and 11 contain one methyl group bridging between two molybdenum centers and there is C-H bond activation of methyl group to the molybdenum. Reaction of 1 with 4 equiv of triethylaluminum gives (2-C2H4)Mo[m-2-HC(N-2,6-iPr2C6H3)(N-2-iPr-6-CH(1-CH2)CH3-C6H3)](m- H)Al(C2H5)[m-2-HC(N-2,6-iPr2C6H3)2]Mo(2-C2H4) (12). The formation of 12 is through the carboalumination of 1 equiv of triethylaluminum to the Mo-Mo quintuple bond accompanies with a C-H bond activation of methyl group, and there are two vinyl groups coordinate to the molybdenum centers. Treatment of 1 equiv of phenylsilane to 1 gives rise to the formation of [m-Si(H)C6H5]Mo2[m-2-HC(N-2,6-iPr2C6H3)2]2 (13), which is formed via an oxidative addition of one molecular phenylsilane to the dimolybdenum quintuple bond, and then releases one molecular hydrogen gas. Besides, Complex 13 can activate a small amount of water to give the novel product, (1-H)(1-OH)[m-Si(H)C6H5]Mo2[m-2-HC(N-2,6-iPr2C6H3)2]2 (14). Complex 13 and 14 exhibit the fluxional behavior, which have been characterized by variable temperature NMR. Introduction of 1 equiv of diphenylgermane to 1 leads to the formation of a lantern-type quadruply-bonded dimolybdenum complex, [m-Ge(C6H5)2]Mo2[m-2-HC(N-2,6-iPr2C6H3)2]2 (15). Treatment of 1 with 3 equiv and 4 equiv of phenylisocyanate affords (m-1:2-PhNCO)(m-2:2-CON(Ph)CONPh)Mo2[m-2-HC(N-2,6-iPr2C6H3)2]2 (16) and [m-2:2-CON(Ph)C(O)NPh][m-2:2-CON(Ph)CONPh]Mo2[m-2-HC (N-2,6-iPr2 C6H3)2]2 (17), respectively. Complex 16 is formed via a C-N coupling in a “head-to-tail” mode, and one molecular phenylisocyanate coordinates on molybdenum centers. On the other hand, via C-N coupling, complex 17 has two pairs of two molecules of phenylisocyanate coordinate to the molybdenum centers. Beside, 1 can effectively catalyzes the cyclotrimerization of phenylisocyanate under mild conditions, affords high yield of 1,3,5-triphenylisocyanurate.

In this thesis, we report the syntheses and characterizations of multiply bonded dichromium complexes. Upon reduction of Cr2(-Cl)2[(2,6-Me2C6H3)NCHN(2,6-Me2C6H3)]2(THF)2 (1) with KC8, two quintuply-bonded dinuclear chromium complexes Cr2[(2,6-Me2C6H3)NCHN(2,6-Me2C6H3)]2 (2) and Cr2[(2,6-Me2C6H3)NCHN(2,6-Me2C6H3)]3 (3) were isolated. Subsequent reduction of 3 with KC8 in the presence of cryptand-[2.2.2] led to the formation of a quintuply-bonded Cr(I)2 compound [K(cryptand [2.2.2])]{Cr2[(2,6-Me2C6H3)NCHN(2,6-Me2C6H3)]3} (4) (Cr-Cr, 1.7397(9) Å) . Complexes 2, 3, 4 have been characterized by NMR, elemental analysis and X-ray diffraction. Complexes 2 and 4 are diamagnetic and they both feature a Cr-Cr quintuple bond. Furthermore, we also synthesized a family of Cr2[ArNCRNAr]2 (Ar = 2,4,6-Me3C6H2, R = H 8; Ar = 2,6-Et2C6H3, R = H 10; Ar = 2,6-i-Pr2C6H3, R = H 12; Ar = 2,6-i-Pr2C6H3, R = CH3 14), which all display a Cr-Cr quintuple bond with Cr-Cr bond lengths in the range of 1.7395(7)-1.812(2) Å. Complexes 8, 10, 12, 14 have been characterized by NMR, elemental analysis and X-ray diffraction. In conclusion, we successfully synthesized two types of quintuply-bonded Cr-Cr complexes, the D3h symmetry complex (4) and D2h symmetry complexes (2, 8, 10, 12, 14). In addition, we isolated an unusual quadruply-bonded Cr(II)2 complex , Cr2{u-[(2-ClC6H4)NCH(tBu)N(2-ClC6H4)]Li}2{u-[(2-ClC6H4)NCH(tBu)N(2-ClC6H4)]} (16) with a nonparallel square planes of each Cr.

Abstract:
In this work, thermal conductivity of perfect and nanoporous few-quintuple Bi2Te3 thin films as well as nanoribbons with perfect and zig-zag edges is investigated using molecular dynamics (MD) simulations with Green-Kubo method. We find minimum thermal conductivity of perfect Bi2Te3 thin films with three quintuple layers (QLs) at room temperature, and we believe it originates from the interplay between inter-quintuple coupling and phonon boundary scattering. Nanoporous films and nanoribbons are studied for additional phonon scattering channels in suppressing thermal conductivity. With 5% porosity in Bi2Te3 thin films, the thermal conductivity is found to decrease by a factor of 4–6, depending on temperature, comparing to perfect single QL. For nanoribbons, width and edge shape are found to strongly affect the temperature dependence as well as values of thermal conductivity.
