Poor birth outcomes are associated with illicit drug use during pregnancy. While prenatal cigarette exposure has similar effects, cessation of illicit drug use during pregnancy is often prioritized over cessation of smoking. The study goal was to examine the impact of pregnancy tobacco use, relative to use of illicit drugs, on birth outcomes. A quitting game is an undiscounted sequential stochastic game, with finitely many players. At any stage each player has only two possible actions, continue and quit. The game ends as soon as at least one player chooses to quit. The players then receive a payoff, which depends only on the set of players that did choose to quit. Semi-structured interviews with five former full-time nurse faculty were used to gain a deeper understanding of experiences and influences that contributed to the participants' decisions to leave. This pilot study evaluated the potential efficacy of an imagery-based intervention called Functional Imagery Training (FIT) as a therapeutic approach to smoking cessation. FIT showed promising results in reducing cigarette use, managing craving, and promoting abstinence among smokers when compared to a control condition, and may play a role in maintaining smokers' motivation to quit. Study design: A longitudinal study designed by using self-structured questionnaires completed by 9,481 draftees who were on active duty in year 2010.
