Abstract:
This paper, a spin-off from a larger-scale research project, advances a novel perspective on recent introducers to quotations in interactive communicative settings, with the (current reporting) speaker and addressee(s) co-present: be like, quote, quote unquote, and the air-quotes are all ‘newcomers’ to the quotative system in English; they are constrained in usage to face-to-face contexts, and they foreground through animating the quote, resorting to the various modalities available in such situations: verbal, vocal, and gestural.

Abstract:
Software systems for the Configure Price Quote (CPQ) process of complex product portfolios have emerged in the sales function of companies recently. A flexible quote of complex products, in particular for a Business-to-Business (B2B) customer requires a wide variability of product features and configurations, along with the ability to deliver competitive quotes in short time. The CPQ system aims to reduce the process time, to increase the process quality by integrating information and data stored in several enterprise systems with codified explicit and implicit knowledge from individuals. As in most of the knowledge management systems, the openness of the knowledge holders to share and codify their individual knowledge is a critical success factor. In this case study, we look at the CPQ system implementation of a multinational Information Technology (IT) solution provider from a process perspective and with regard to both the technical and organizational challenges in a holistic approach. The article starts with an introduction to CPQ systems based on works from the Knowledge Management (KM) domain. After outlining our research methodology, we present the case together with a generalization of the CPQ implementation process. Our findings from the investigated scenario indicate positive influence of 1) the internal promotion of CPQ systems as technology innovation for motivating expert knowledge holders to collaborate; 2) an active preparation of the organizational environment for the upcoming changes; and 3) a hybrid agile implementation process.

Abstract:
For any insurance contract to see the light of day, a particular process flow is usually followed. This process flow begins with the customer calling an agent to obtain insurance, and ends with the customer receiving a quote for the coverage. Precision methods focus on improving precision and quality and on planning measures that absolutely address issues and meet the necessary requirements. Unlike automation where the focus is on speeding up tasks and processes, a precision-based approach is centered around improving the quality of the process. More current practices call for ceaselessly examining and retooling tasks/operations to achieve ever more noteworthy business esteem. In this paper, the Insurance Policy Administration System is covered in detail. The format, layout, and key details that the insurance policy entails are thoroughly covered. Some key functionalities like The Policy Submission, Risk Analysis, Policy changes and renewals, Policy cancellation in a typical Policy Administration System are reviewed. Since the Policy Administration System cannot be a standalone service and has to be used along with external systems, the integration of this typical policy administration system with an external system like a user management system is also discussed.

- Persistent inequalities produced by globalization and the increasing exclusion of millions of people from formal economies have triggered the development of new strategies and instruments, especially in the Global South. Among the experiences that contributed to broaden the horizon of alternative forms of development based on participation, solidarity and reciprocity we can quote Non-Monetary Systems of Local Exchange. Sintral is a meaningful example of this; it was developed in Equador, and it is a local transaction system that allows the exchange of goods and services without using money.Key words: globalization, development, money, reciprocity.

Abstract:
Customers assess a company's ability to meet their needs based upon service interactions with that company. The growth of the Internet as an information transfer medium has dramatically increased reliance on communication between a human and a computer during service interactions. Although trust is known to be an integral part of customer experience during human-to-human interactions, it has been suggested that even when service is provided by an inanimate entity, trust remains a relevant factor. This study evaluated a tool purporting to measure system trust during automated service interactions. Participants completed an auto rate quote via one of two insurers' websites. A two-factor structure was uncovered. The scale exhibited strong internal consistency, sensitivity to objective task success, and was significantly related to several other customer experience measures. The results provide convergent evidence that the scale is a valid and reliable tool for describing customers' experiences during automated interactions.

Abstract We analyzed narratives from graduate students trained in aging themes who then interviewed older hospitalized adults about their life experiences. Three Discovery Fellows given a 90-minute training on open-ended interviewing, the medical care system, empathy, and aging themes derived from the Reframing Aging Program performed semi-structured interviews of 30-90 minutes. Subjects were hospitalized older veterans receiving care by an interdisciplinary geriatric rehabilitation team. Narratives were composed following the interviews and electronically uploaded to a secure site. Qualitative analysis was performed with each statement treated as a separate quote using a hierarchical coding system. A total of 774 codes were used to describe the themes present in 582 quotes. A conceptual framework from the narrative themes emerged with 5 groupings: 1) personal experience, 2) people important in life, 3) self-reflection, 4) medical condition, and 5) health maintenance. Concepts displayed included openness, compassion, and morality, as components of wisdom.

Abstract:
Analyzing the historical, juridical and ethnographical information about treasures, the author points out at the links between the treasure legends and the mythologies of the Otherworld. The treasures, in their most archaic identifiable aspects, are a part of the Otherworld reality. The access to it is regulated by a system of rules governed by forgotten divinities of the underworld and, also, is a result of a form of initiation. One of the basic rules of treasure finding is that of non-intentionality, of the complete absence of any desire for enrichment. Also, there can be found interesting forms of the coincidence of the opposite, and in this respect, we can quote quite frequent situations in which Vâlva (spirit/deity protecting the treasure) appears to women in the form of a man and to men in the form of a woman. Treasure legends reveal a set of ethical rules and another set of archaic magic practices, all of which representing disparate survivals of ancient belief systems. The magical treasure-seeking rituals are recorded in both the occult / scholar literature and the folk traditions, and the burning of treasures at important dates associated with the great Christian feasts also refer to a belief system in which the treasure mythology plays an important place. The connection between the treasure and the religious holidays is also an indication of the relationship between the opening of treasures and a belief system that has as its central point the communication with the Otherworld.

Abstract:
We examine gender bias in media by tallying the number of men and women quoted in news text, using the Gender Gap Tracker, a software system we developed specifically for this purpose. The Gender Gap Tracker downloads and analyzes the online daily publication of seven English-language Canadian news outlets and enhances the data with multiple layers of linguistic information. We describe the Natural Language Processing technology behind this system, the curation of off-the-shelf tools and resources that we used to build it, and the parts that we developed. We evaluate the system in each language processing task and report errors using real-world examples. Finally, by applying the Tracker to the data, we provide valuable insights about the proportion of people mentioned and quoted, by gender, news organization, and author gender. Data collected between October 1, 2018 and September 30, 2020 shows that, in general, men are quoted about three times as frequently as women. While this proportion varies across news outlets and time intervals, the general pattern is consistent. We believe that, in a world with about 50% women, this should not be the case. Although journalists naturally need to quote newsmakers who are men, they also have a certain amount of control over who they approach as sources. The Gender Gap Tracker relies on the same principles as fitness or goal-setting trackers: By quantifying and measuring regular progress, we hope to motivate news organizations to provide a more diverse set of voices in their reporting.

Abstract:
The purpose of this thesis is to analyse the evolution of New Zealands Quota Management System (QMS) for marine fisheries. Analysis is performed using institutional theory and methodology. A broad review of institutional theory is made. In contrast to neoclassical economic theory, of which institutionalists have been a major voice of dissent, institutionalism stresses a holistic approach to policy analysis. An understanding of the the forces for institutional change and the structure of that change are the primary focus of institutionalism. An institutional framework for understanding the common pool nature of fishery resources is adopted. This highlights how the physical and technical characteristics of the resource and related decision-making arrangements influence the patterns of human interaction that determine the outcomes of a management regime such as the QMS. It is shown that the QMS was adopted in 1986 to address the biological crisis that had occurred because of past open access management policies. The fiscal crisis and the economic ideology prevailing at the time were also influential in promoting the QMS. The system was not able to be expanded as was intended because of a series of challenges from Maori disputing the Crowns right to fishery resources. The Deed of Settlement signed in 1992, has supposedly settled Maori claims to commercial fisheries and allowed expansion of the QMS. Assessing the QMS using the institutional framework developed, showed the strong influence that neoclassical ideology has played in determining the outcomes achieved. Inadequate information concerning biophysical, social and economic implications of fishing constrain the ability of the QMS to successfully manage the resource. Inconsistencies and inadequacies in the legislation are only just being addressed as part of a comprehensive legislative review process. The future development of the QMS is also addressed in terms of the likelihood of cooperative common property management regimes being adopted. The common pool nature of the fisheries makes common property management regimes preferable. Cooperative community cultures are claimed by institutionalists to improve the outcomes achieved in common property regimes. There was considered, however, to be only limited potential for cooperation within the current institutional structure for New Zealands fisheries. Although the changes of the legislative review appear to be making some progressive changes, the diversity of interest groups and the prevailing western culture are seen as potential impediments to a comprehensive cooperative regime.

This thesis deals with the toll systems which have been in operation in the Czech Republic since 2007. The first part defines the basic concepts of transportation and describes the development, goals and the direction of transport policy of the European Union, and the Czech Republic. It also describes the different ways of collecting tolls on roads and the possibility of charging for entrance into cities. The second part analyses the current state of the toll system, not only in our country, but also in neighboring countries. Practical knowledge is supplemented by the hand counting of trucks, avoiding toll communication and a questionnaire survey among carriers. The third part is focused on proposals for solving current situations. The aims are: bring trucks back to the toll roads, reduce the noise levels on highways at night, improve the quality of roads in the Czech Republic, increase user comfort levels of toll systems and increase the number of "green" trucks on the roads

Abstract:
The question of social systems is a topical issue today. In this thesis I consider the social system in Austria. The Austrian social system is very generously funded, but at the same time very carefully planned, and its social benefits are distributed in the same way. In the first part of my thesis I will deal with the historical development of the Austrian social system. In the next section, I focus on the functioning of the current social system, especially in crucial areas - pension, health and social insurance. I also describe the implemented reforms of the pension and health insurance. Austria, in respect of these reform measures, has made significant strides to maintain long-term financial sustainability of its pension and health system. The aim of this thesis is to determine whether it would be appropriate to implement the selected elements of the Austrian social system into the Czech social system. In my thesis I also look at the current manifestations of crisis of the social state, particularly demographic factors and the problem of legitimacy.

Abstract:
This thesis focuses on the design of an electrical drive system for the purpose of high precision motion control. A modern electrical drive is usually equipped with a current regulated voltage source along with powerful motion controller system utilizing one or more micro-controllers and/or digital signal processors (DSPs). That is, the motor drive control is mostly performed by a dedicated digital-motion controller system. Such a motor drive mostly interfaces with its host processor via various serial communication protocols such as Profibus, CAN+, RS-485 etc. for the purpose of receiving commands and sending out important status/control signals. Considering that the motor drives lie at the heart of every (multi-axis) motion control system, the aim of this thesis is to explore the design and implementation of a conventional DC motor drive system suitable for most industrial applications that require precision and accuracy. To achieve this goal, various underlying control concepts and important implementation details are rigorously investigated in this study. A low power DC motor drive system with a power module, a current regulator and a motion controller is built and tested. Several design revisions on these subsystems are made so as to improve the overall performance of the drive system itself. Consequently, important &ldquo
know-how&rdquo
required for building high performance (and high power) DC motor drives is gained in this research.

Tam, Oi-lan, and 譚愛蘭. "The quota and points system of Hong Kong's public rental housing." Thesis, The University of Hong Kong (Pokfulam, Hong Kong), 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10722/207659.

Full text
Abstract:
Prior to 1985, individuals were generally not allowed to apply for public rental housing (PRH) on their own. In 1985, in order to response to the demand from the elderly and those affected by redevelopment or living in temporary housing areas, the restriction was released. The release of restriction attracts many one-person households to apply PRH. In 1989/90, applicants of age 18 to 24 occupied 4% of the newly registered Waiting List (WL) One-person Applications. But in 2004/05, the age group 18 to 24 applicants occupy 21% of the newly registered applications (Hong Kong Housing Authority, Housing Subsidised Committee SHC 58/2005, p.1 of Annex B). The Hong Kong Housing Authority found that the sharp increase number of Non-elderly One-person Applicants has adversely impacted to the 3 years rehousing performance pledge. It started to address the housing priority problem through the introduction of Quota and Points System (QPS) in September 2005. The Points System is based on two factors to assign points – the age of the applicant and whether the applicant is a PRH tenant or not. The priority of Non-elderly One-person WL applicants will be determined according to the points received. The more points the Applicant scores, the top priority and the earlier the Applicant will be offered a flat, subject to the fulfillment of all the other PRH eligibility criteria. Housing Authority sets an annual quota for Non-elderly One-person Applicants. This study aims at reviewing and evaluating the equitable issue of QPS. Equity is to ensure fairness of treatment between households. QPS is an important policy to rationalize housing priority to the Non-elderly One-person Applicants under scarce public housing resources. This study approaches the equity issue from both a theoretical analysis and a qualitative measurement by questionnaire survey. Based on various literature reviews, the concept of justice, equity, equality and housing needs are elaborated in theoretical analysis. Also, the experience of public housing application in some developed countries is described. The Points System of developed countries and Fordham’s suitability test are taken into account on setting of questionnaire. Most of the findings under theoretical analysis are agreed with the findings from the questionnaire survey. This study focuses on analysis in equity issue of QPS and to suggest recommendations to improve the equity among applicants.

In this thesis, I evaluate Distributed Quota Enforcement (DQE), a system for enforcing quotas on e-mail use as a spam control mechanism. I briefly describe the design and implementation of DQE, and then evaluate the enforcer's performance in several ways. My evaluation includes: the capacity of a single node; how the enforcer scales with added nodes; how well the enforcer tolerates faults; the relationship between the enforcer's size and time to respond (request latency); and the impact of globally distributing the enforcer's nodes. Salient features of the evaluation include: an enforcer composed to a few thousand high-end PCs can handle the world's current e-mail volume; the enforcer is resistant to failures: even with 20% of its nodes down, stamps are reused on average only 1.5 times; the main bottleneck in the enforcer's performance is disk seeks.

Abstract:
Quoting numbers for the efficiency of a turbine is ambiguous if it is not known how this efficiency is defined. This is especially true for a heavily cooled turbine where for the same machine the efficiency may be quoted as 88% or 91%, for example. In aero-engine industry, several different turbine efficiency bookkeeping systems are in use. Since nearly always a consortium of two or more companies is involved into any new engine project it is important to understand the various bookkeeping systems. Turbine designers and performance specialists should not quote a number for the efficiency of a cooled turbine without clearly stating on which methodology and control volume it is based. In this paper, the commonly used turbine performance bookkeeping methods are compared. The pros and cons for the different methodologies are discussed and correlations between the definitions are shown for single and multistage turbines with various amounts of cooling air. Furthermore it is pointed out, that simulating a cooled multistage turbine with an equivalent single-stage model requires the use of an equivalent Stator Outlet Temperature SOTeqv which differs from the true SOT. It depends on the bookkeeping system used what the calculated impact on turbine performance is when the amount of cooling air changes. Without carefully adhering to a unique bookkeeping system with a clearly defined control volume the probability of misunderstandings in collaborative engine development projects is not to be underestimated.

Abstract:
The actual applicative research concerning airships and their use as HAP (High Altitude Platforms for telecommunications and military use) presents new applicative hypothesis of these systems, also concerning energetic high quote production. Authors present the energetic balance of a high quote photovoltaic platform with capability of static hovering realized by electric powered propellers. This is the first step trough the design of the P. S. I. C. H. E. (Photovoltaic Space Island for Conversion of Hydrogen as Energy vector) airship concept: a stratospheric airship which could be considered a platform for hydrogen and oxygen production by photovoltaic. It investigates the behaviour of a similar platform operating at altitudes between 10 and 20 km, positioned at 45° latitude north [1, 2]. This paper analyses the design process for a High Altitude Platform based on photovoltaic energy caption, but the process could be generalized in order to be applied to any airship project. It is considers airship shapes equipped with large PV array that covers energy request during the day. Surplus in power supplies electrolyser equipments for hydrogen and oxygen production from water, which could be captured by atmospheric humidity or brought by an auxiliary airship. Hydrogen and Oxygen are compressed and stored in gas cylinders. With insufficient solar irradiance, with severe wind conditions and during the night, a fuel cell system fed by hydrogen and oxygen tanks supplies power requirements. The Standard Atmosphere Model is used to evaluate PV performance at various operative altitudes. A propulsion system with electric motors grants airship manoeuvrability and hovering. Energy balance of PV-hydrogen energy supply system has been analyzed for three airship shapes with equal volume with concern of overabundant hydrogen and oxygen production. Total weight and payload are calculated in relation to altitude. Storage tanks dimensions and products ground transportation frequency has been estimated. Hydrogen annual production for PV square meter has been evaluated in relation to ground production at the same latitude.

Eriksson, Leif G. "Retrievability: A False Positive?!?" In ASME 2001 8th International Conference on Radioactive Waste Management and Environmental Remediation. American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2001. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/icem2001-1297.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract Retrieval (and various permutations of this term) of long-lived radioactive wastes/materials (LLRMs) from deep geological repositories is a “concept” currently believed to increase public confidence in, and acceptance of, national LLRM-repository programs. If the “retrievability concept” provides the missing link to increased public acceptance, which is imperative in a democratic society for the siting and development of a deep LLRM repository, then the understanding and expectations of the terms used must be clearly defined, and the associated benefits and shortcomings clearly explained, to the public. To quote the Danish mathematician and philosopher Piet Hein: Knowing what you knowest not is in a sense omniscience. Based on more than 20 years of involvement in the development of deep geological repositories for LLRMs in the United Sates of America and abroad, it is the preliminary conclusion of this author that retrievability conveys a false positive because it: 1. Does not add any appreciable post-closure physical safety to current and future generations and environments. 2. Could compromise (but does not necessarily have to) the long-term integrity of the disposal system. 3. Conveys the erroneous message that this generation does not have confidence in its ability to design, construct, decommission, and close a deep geological repository for LLRMs, in a manner that provides long-term containment and isolation of the emplaced LLRMs.

Melnyk, Olesia. MEDIA DISCOURSE AROUND THE FIGURE OF ORIANA FALLACHI AND HER JOURNALISM DURING 2017–2020. Ivan Franko National University of Lviv, March 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.30970/vjo.2021.50.11114.

Abstract:
The article analyzes the media discourse around the figure of Oriana Fallachi and her journalistic work during 2017-2020. The actual media image of the figure of Fallachi is highlighted, examples of positive and negative statements are given. It is substantiated why her journalism should be researched in various ways, taking into account other aspects of her work that are not related to Islamophobia. The subject of the study is critical texts in modern foreign media dedicated to the author’s work. The objective of the study is to outline the media discourse around the figure of Oriana Fallaci and her journalism during 2017-2020. The methodology. The following methods have been used in the process of scientific research: historical, comparative, systems analysis, content synthesis, and others. The main results. In total, we have analyzed eight materials in foreign publications, published over the past 3 years, as well as the two most famous biographies of Oriana Fallaci. Some of the most recent reviewed texts have been published in the last few months, reflecting the interest in the author’s journalism, her writing, and reporting. Therefore, we see the need for further tracking and analysis of this body of texts. Conclusions. Critics of Fallaci express polar views that are not all negative. Authors recommend quite cautiously her texts for reading, emphasizing their positive aspects. Both Fallaci’s biographies are also not entirely complementary: some aspects of her work are glorified, others are condemned. We managed to find general tendencies in the criticism of Oriana Fallaci’s journalism. These include accusations of xenophobia and Islamophobia, uncompromisingness, lack of political correctness, and moral value. The authors emphasize, at the same time, the openness and directness that bribe the reader, patriotism and honesty, strength of spirit and firmness of position. Significance of the research. The analysis of the latest criticism reveals what kind of media image Fallachi’s figure has today, and gives the possibility to research it for demonization and one-sided coverage. This is important not only for thorough research of the author’s work but also for understanding how the modern world perceives journalism, which is contrary to the generally accepted principles of political correctness, journalistic ethics, and humanity.

Gender mainstreaming in local potato seed system in Georgia. International Potato Center, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.4160/9789290605645.

Full text
Abstract:
This report presents the study findings associated with the project “Enhancing Rural Livelihoods in Georgia: Introducing Integrated Seed Health Approaches to Local Potato Seed Systems” in Georgia. It also incorporates information from the results of gender training conducted within the framework of the USAID Potato Program in Georgia. The study had three major aims: 1) to understand the gender-related opportunities and constraints impacting the participation of men and women in potato seed systems in Georgia; 2) to test the multistakeholder framework for intervening in root, tuber, and banana (RTB) seed systems as a means to understand the systems themselves and the possibilities of improving gender-related interventions in the potato seed system; and 3) to develop farmers’ leadership skills to facilitate women’s active involvement in project activities. Results of the project assessment identified certain constraints on gender mainstreaming in the potato seed system: a low level of female participation in decision-making processes, women’s limited access to finances that would enable their greater involvement in larger scale potato farming, and a low awareness of potato seed systems and of possible female involvement in associated activities. Significantly, the perception of gender roles and stereotypes differs from region to region in Georgia; this difference is quite pronounced in the target municipalities of Kazbegi, Marneuli, and Akhalkalaki, with the last two having populations of ethnic minorities (Azeri and Armenian, respectively). For example, in Marneuli, although women are actively involved in potato production, they are not considered farmers but mainly as assistants to farmers, who are men. This type of diversity (or lack thereof) results in a different understanding of gender mainstreaming in the potato seed system as well. Based on the training results obtained in three target regions—Akhalkalaki, Akhaltsikhe, and Marneuli—it is evident that women are keen on learning new technologies and on acquiring updated agricultural information, including on potato production. It is also clear that women spend as much time as men do on farming activities such as potato production, particularly in weeding and harvesting. However, women are heavily burdened with domestic work, and they are not major decision-makers with regard to potato variety selection, agricultural investments, and product sales, nor with the inclusion of participants in any training provided. Involving women in project activities will lead to greater efficiency in the potato production environment, as women’s increased knowledge will certainly contribute to an improved production process, and their new ideas will help to improve existing production systems, through which women could also gain confidence and power. As a general recommendation, it is extremely important to develop equitable seed systems that take into consideration, among other factors, social context and the cultural aspects of local communities. Thus, understanding male and female farmers’ knowledge may promote the development of seed systems that are sustainable and responsive to farmers’ needs and capacities.
