Abstract:
AbstractWe study the effect of the implementation of new Securities and Exchange Commission order‐handling rules—the Limit Order Display Rule, the Quote Rule, and the Actual Size Rule—on NASDAQ's quoting and trading behavior. We find that the number of reported quotes increases and the bid‐ask spread decreases following the implementation of the new rules. The decreased quoted depth associated with placement of individual investors' limit orders—the Limit Order Display Rule—outweighs the increased quoted depth associated with displaying institutional quotes—the Quote Rule. Further, the number of trade executions increases while the average trade size decreases. The volatility of trade‐to‐trade and midpoint returns decreases for the initial group of stocks subject to the rules, but not for the two subsequent groups.

Abstract:
We describe a method for identifying the speakers of quoted speech in natural-language textual stories. We have assembled a corpus of more than 3,000 quotations, whose speakers (if any) are manually identified, from a collection of 19th and 20th century literature by six authors. Using rule-based and statistical learning, our method identifies candidate characters, determines their genders, and attributes each quote to the most likely speaker. We divide the quotes into syntactic classes in order to leverage common discourse patterns, which enable rapid attribution for many quotes. We apply learning algorithms to the remainder and achieve an overall accuracy of 83%.

Abstract:
This article examines the discursive construction of ordinariness in the context of mediated political discourse, considering in particular contexts, in which ‘non-ordinary speakers’ quote ordinary people, bring them into the mediated public arena and assign them and their quoted contributions the status of an object of talk, and in which ‘ordinary speakers’ follow up on the ‘brought-in-ordinariness’. The contexts under investigation are Prime Minister’s Questions (PMQs) transmitted in the social media and commenters’ posts on the exchanges between the Prime Minister’s and Leader of the Opposition’s bringing-in-ordinariness. The Prime Minister and Leader of the Opposition treat the ‘brought-in-ordinariness’ in an ordinary manner by naming quoter and quoted and providing responses to the quoted questions while accommodating the political elite in their contributions; some of the ordinary commenters take up the ‘brought-in-ordinariness’ by negotiating its perlocutionary effects with evaluative metacomments. The ‘brought-in-ordinariness’ receives various kinds of uptakes, ranging from enthusiastic responses hailing true democracy to negative responses criticizing the non-professional manner of doing politics.

Abstract:
According to journalistic standards, direct quotes should be attributed to sources with objective quotatives such as ``said'' and ``told,'' since nonobjective quotatives, e.g., ``argued'' and ``insisted,'' would influence the readers' perception of the quote and the quoted person. In this paper, we analyze the adherence to this journalistic norm to study trends in objectivity in political news across U.S. outlets of different ideological leanings. We ask: 1) How has the usage of nonobjective quotatives evolved? 2) How do news outlets use nonobjective quotatives when covering politicians of different parties? To answer these questions, we developed a dependency-parsing-based method to extract quotatives and applied it to Quotebank, a web-scale corpus of attributed quotes, obtaining nearly 7 million quotes, each enriched with the quoted speaker's political party and the ideological leaning of the outlet that published the quote. We find that, while partisan outlets are the ones that most often use nonobjective quotatives, between 2013 and 2020, the outlets that increased their usage of nonobjective quotatives the most were ``moderate'' centrist news outlets (around 0.6 percentage points, or 20% in relative percentage over seven years). Further, we find that outlets use nonobjective quotatives more often when quoting politicians of the opposing ideology (e.g., left-leaning outlets quoting Republicans) and that this ``quotative bias'' is rising at a swift pace, increasing up to 0.5 percentage points, or 25% in relative percentage, per year. These findings suggest an overall decline in journalistic objectivity in U.S. political news.

BackgroundThis research is an investigation into the role of expert quotes in health news, specifically whether news articles containing a quote from an independent expert are less often exaggerated than articles without such a quote.MethodsRetrospective quantitative content analysis of journal articles, press releases, and associated news articles was performed. The investigated sample are press releases on peer-reviewed health research and the associated research articles and news stories. Our sample consisted of 462 press releases and 668 news articles from the UK (2011) and 129 press releases and 185 news articles from The Netherlands (2015). We hand-coded all journal articles, press releases and news articles for correlational claims, using a well-tested codebook. The main outcome measures are types of sources that were quoted and exaggeration of correlational claims. We used counts, 2x2 tables and odds ratios to assess the relationship between presence of quotes and exaggeration of the causal claim.ResultsOverall, 99.1% of the UK press releases and 84.5% of the Dutch press releases contain at least one quote. For the associated news articles these percentages are: 88.6% in the UK and 69.7% in the Netherlands. Authors of the study are most often quoted and only 7.5% of UK and 7.0% of Dutch news articles contained a new quote by an expert source, i.e. one not provided by the press release. The relative odds that an article without an external expert quote contains an exaggeration of causality is 2.6.ConclusionsThe number of articles containing a quote from an independent expert is low, but articles that cite an external expert do contain less exaggeration.

Until now, a German quote from Grigoriev’s article “Th e Last Phase of Love” (1846) in A. Blok’s “The Fate of Apollo Grigoriev”, has remained not only uncommented, but also untranslated. A dictionary analysis showed that a major misprint was made in the magazine “Repertuar i Pantheon” (Erwürdigster instead of Ehrwürdigster). In Blok’s article, another inaccuracy was added to this typo, as a result of which the quote turned into an “obscure passage in the text”. Correction of typos showed that Grigoriev quotes a remark from a Masonic ritual, which corresponds to his passion for Freemasonry and mysticism during the translation of the “Hymns”, with which Block correlated the quoted fragment.

Abstract:
This article lends empirical support to the notion that quoted speech is “constructed dialogue” by exploring empirically how narratives of personal experience involve creative performance of locally imaginable personas, rather than accurate or faithful representation of actual people and their words. This work examines quotation in narratives of personal experience as a site where speakers use language pragmatically to enact socio-culturally locatable identities. Using a corpus of narratives in which French–Portuguese bilinguals told the same narratives of personal experience once in each language, it demonstrates that speakers do not quote more extensively when recounting experiences in the language in which those events “originally” occurred. Ultimately, what differs most in speakers' quotations in French and Portuguese tellings of the “same event” are the nonequivalent kinds and ranges of registers in which narrated characters are quoted. More specifically, speakers are more likely to quote themselves as speaking or having spoken in creative, marked registers in French than in Portuguese. This difference in the registers put in the mouths of quoted characters, in particular of quoted selves, may point to ways in which these bilinguals' multiple identities are instantiated within and across their two languages. More broadly, this work reveals ways in which all speakers may use narrative not only to describe the past but also to perform a variety of cultural selves, reinventing and reenacting characters as quoted selves and others.

Abstract:
This paper studies efficient market hypothesis in prediction markets and the results are illustrated for the in-play football betting market using the quoted odds for the English Premier League. Our analysis is based on the martingale property, where the last quoted probability should be the best predictor of the outcome and all previous quotes should be statistically insignificant. We use regression analysis to test for the significance of the previous quotes in both the time setup and the spatial setup based on stopping times, when the quoted probabilities reach certain bounds. The main contribution of this paper is to show how a potentially different distributional opinion based on the violation of the market efficiency can be monetized by optimal trading, where the agent maximizes logarithmic utility function. In particular, the trader can realize a trading profit that corresponds to the likelihood ratio in the situation of one market maker and one market taker, or the Bayes factor in the situation of two or more market takers.

Almarshad, Mohammad. "Strategic thinking in Jordanian publicly quoted companies." Thesis, University of Huddersfield, 2013. http://eprints.hud.ac.uk/id/eprint/19753/.

Full text
Abstract:
Strategic thinking (ST) is a process by which managers and employees try to find alternative ways to solve problems in order to deal with rapid changes and forces in a business environment. Strategic thinking was established and has been used extensively in developed countries. However, strategic thinking in developing countries has received little attention. The research described in this thesis is an attempt to assess the extent of knowledge of and familiarity with the concept and purpose of strategic thinking, as well as to assess the extent of practice of strategic thinking factors in Jordanian publicly quoted companies. Also, this research explores the barriers which prevent the practice of strategic thinking in these companies. Data was collected by using both quantitative and qualitative methods (i.e. questionnaires and interviews) which were employed at three different levels of company structures. The questionnaires aimed to investigate knowledge of and familiarity with the concept and purpose of strategic thinking, the extent of strategic thinking practices, and the barriers which prevent the practice of strategic thinking in Jordanian publicly quoted companies. 336 questionnaires were collected from 112 Jordanian publicly quoted companies, followed by eight semi-structured interviews with eight of the companies to support the study objectives and to achieve a good understanding of strategic thinking practices in Jordanian companies. The main findings of this research are that the surveyed companies in Jordan have good knowledge of and are familiar with the concept of strategic thinking; that the age of a company has a moderate relationship with knowledge of the concept and purpose of strategic thinking, while the size of a company has no relationship with knowledge of the concept and purpose of strategic thinking; and that few differences exist between the four business sectors concerning the contribution to knowledge of and familiarity with the concept and purpose of strategic thinking. The majority of surveyed companies in Jordan use strategic thinking skills extensively in their companies. The findings also show that Jordanian publicly quoted companies face different barriers which prevent the practice of strategic thinking in their companies. The study makes an original contribution to academic and practical knowledge in the field of strategic management. This study is considered an important empirical study of strategic thinking practices in publicly quoted companies in Jordan. Some recommendations for further research have been derived from this study.

Aldehayyat, Jehad Saleh. "Strategic planning in publicly quoted Jordanian companies." Thesis, University of Huddersfield, 2006. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.431517.

Abstract:
Strategic planning was established and used in developed countries as a means to manage change in the environment. Over time the planning research and wisdom came from those countries. But, strategic planning in developing countries is not taken seriously and relatively little research has been conducted in these countries. The current research empirically examines the extent of practice strategic planning in publicly quoted Jordanian companies (hereafter referred to as Jordanian companies). In addition, this research explores the organisational characteristics (company size, company age and nature of business) that influence such practice. This research also reported the managers' views towards strategic planning and identified the problems associated with the implementation of strategic planning in these companies. A cross sectional survey employing a questionnaire as the data collection method was adopted. The empirical research was conducted in May-July 2004 by hand delivering the questionnaires, which were written in both Arabic and English, to the Jordanian companies. A total of 83 valid responses were received, representing a 40% response rate. Among the important contributions to the body of knowledge made by this research is that, firstly it provides empirical evidence of about important areas of strategic planning practice which include: the nature of the involvement of top and line management in planning activities; the time horizon for planning; the use of environmental scanning (internal and external); the commitment to strategic activities; the use of strategy toolsl techniques. Secondly, it provides empirical evidence about the nature of the relationship between the organisational characteristics (size, age and nature of business) and the extent of strategic planning practice. Thirdly, it is considered as a first attempt to study strategic planning in Jordanian companies through a comprehensive multidimensional approach. Fourthly, it represents an attempt to provide a better understanding of the nature and practices of strategic planning in developing countries. The results of this research provide clear evidence that Jordanian companies practice strategic planning to a greater or lesser extent; that these companies put less emphasis on internal scanning; that the participation of top management is relatively high in all strategic planning activities; that larger companies are more likely to engage in strategic planning; that these companies have given little emphasis to the implementation process; that the large companies believe that the strategy adopted is the result of a deliberate process of formulation; that the smaller companies believe that the strategy adopted has "emerged" over time.

Shergill, Gurvinder Singh. "Strategy, structure and performance in New Zealand quoted companies." Thesis, University of Canterbury. Business Administration, 1989. http://hdl.handle.net/10092/4371.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis investigated the extent of diversification in New Zealand companies and its effect on their administrative structure and performance. So far there has not been any study done on the diversification process of New Zealand companies although rapid changes are taking place in their strategic posture. In the second half of the twentieth century the corporate profile in advanced countries like the USA and UK had undergone significant changes as a result of diversification strategies by their business corporations. Diversification is now becoming a major corporate strategy and hence it would be useful for corporate managements, shareholders, financial institutions and other corporate investors, public policy makers and researchers to know the effectiveness of diversification in improving profitability and growth, and reducing risk. Though theoretical and empirical studies done abroad by financial, economic and business researchers suggest that only certain categories of diversification would result in higher performance, a systematic study of this subject is yet to be carried out in New Zealand. This study attempts to accomplish this. This study addresses the following issues: (1) Have the diversification strategies affected the administrative structure of the companies and which structure is the best performer? (2) Does the performance differ among the different types of diversification strategies, for example, between related and unrelated diversification? (3) Does the strategy-structure 'fit' affect the performance of companies? A multi-industry, multi-company approach involving a sample size of 103 New Zealand listed companies in the manufacturing and non-manufacturing sector is used for establishing generalizability of the findings. Adjustment for factors such as size, industry participation, leverage and risk are also incorporated in the design of the study. The performance measures used are in the dimensions of growth and profitability. Findings of this study suggest that in general diversification is useful for reducing the risk and improving the growth and profitability. However, where diversification shows significant improvement over single business strategy, it is in the areas of reduction of risk and improving overall performance. Related diversified companies performed better than the unrelated diversifiers. Regarding the structure, division ally organized companies are having better performance, followed by holding and functional structure. Companies in the strategy-structure 'match' group are having superior performance than the mis-matched category. Finally this study discusses the implications of the findings and suggests areas for future research.

Sadler, Graham Vernon. "Executive compensation & share options in UK quoted companies." Thesis, University of Warwick, 1999. http://wrap.warwick.ac.uk/36372/.

Full text
Abstract:
The topic of executive compensation has recently emerged as a legitimate field for academic study. The rapid growth in publications has almost been matched by the well-publicised growth in CEO remuneration. From the time of the first utility privatisation in the UK, right up to current day, the topic of board room pay has rarely been out of the news headlines or the academic journals. This thesis makes several new contributions to the executive compensation literature, primarily by providing an in depth analysis of the executive option holdings of directors in the UK. Data on this aspect of executive compensation has until recently been unavailable and as such this thesis represents the first work in the UK to fully incorporate this element of remuneration for a large sample of companies. Executive options have become an increasingly significant component in executive compensation, yet their valuation and the incentive effects they create are relatively poorly understood. This thesis attempts to undo these shortcomings by providing a thorough analysis of the determinants and consequences of the level of option information disclosure. Furthermore, it develops the rational for granting executive options and describes the creation and distribution of the pay for performance sensitivities created by holdings of executive options. Finally, it deals with valuation issues that are particular to executive options.

Florou, Annita. "An empirical investigation into top management turnover in UK quoted companies." Thesis, University of Warwick, 2001. http://wrap.warwick.ac.uk/105014/.

Full text
Abstract:
The present research analyses the determinants and the implications of senior management departures in the UK. Based on a sample of the 460 largest UK companies by market capitalisation over 1990-1998, and using regression techniques, this study investigates the event of top management turnover in three empirical chapters. The first one documents the circumstances under which poor firm performance may lead to a CEO job separation. The second chapter explores the organisational consequences of CEO turnover by modelling - for the first time in the UK - Chairman turnover at the time of CEO departure. The last empirical chapter deals with the implications of CEO turnover on investment choices. The most important methodological advancement is the rigorous and comprehensive classification of management departures, which increases significantly the power of the tests considered in the thesis. The provision of additional evidence on the conflicting issue of managerial entrenchment, the modelling of Chairman turnover and the investigation of the role of equity-based compensation in mitigating opportunistic managerial incentives are among the conceptual contributions of the study. The primary findings of the thesis can be summarised as follows. Firstly in terms of top management departures, CEO turnover is linked with poor firm performance although the latter must fall significantly in order to increase the turnover likelihood. This disciplining effect seems to have not become stronger over time and, CEOs do not appear to become entrenched at high ownership levels. Secondly with regard to Chairman turnover, there is evidence that some Chairmen also depart when the CEO turns-over, especially following poor company performance or CEO dismissals. Outside CEO succession, on the other hand, does not appear to be associated with additional increases in the Chairman turnover likelihood. Finally with respect to investment, it appears that CEOs threatened by forced termination, tend to cut down investment prior to their departure in order to increase reported income and “save” their jobs. In contrast, retiring CEOs do not engage in opportunistic behaviour, even if they own a small fraction of the company's equity.

Abstract:
The determinants of corporate dividend policy remain controversial despite half a century of active research. Over that time a number of competing theories of dividend policy have been proposed, but no consensus has been reached about their explanatory power. This thesis examines the determinants of dividend policy of publicly quoted companies in Jordan as a case study of an emerging market. The study uses a firm-level panel data set of all publicly traded firms on the Ammam Stock Exchange between 1989 and 2000. Nine research hypotheses are developed, which are used to represent the main theories of corporate dividends. The results of studies conducted in this thesis suggest that the proportion of stocks held by insiders and state ownership significantly affect the amount of dividends paid, but not the decision to pay dividends. Larger, mature, profitable firms with less investment opportunities are more likely to pay dividends. These factors are found to also positively affect the level of dividends. Results provide no support for the signalling hypothesis. The thesis concludes with a discussion of some of the implications of all results and suggestions for further research.<br>Doctor of Philosophy (Finance)

Sinha, Rajeeva. "Corporate governance : a study of the corporate governance of quoted firms in the United Kingdom." Thesis, University of Warwick, 1998. http://wrap.warwick.ac.uk/36359/.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to examine the corporate governance, of firms quoted on the stock market. An important contribution of the thesis is the derivation of the conceptual framework for analysing corporate governance which places conduct at the centre of the understanding of corporate governance. I propose a conceptual framework by extending the concept of incomplete contracts to include expost observability/verifiability of the contracts between shareholders and managers. Strategic co-operation between shareholders and managers is only feasible in the procedural justice mode. Deliberation between the contracting parties is identified as the centre piece of corporate governance. Managerial decision behaviour is shown to be endogenous to the corporate governance framework. A number of empirical issues emerge from the conceptual framework. We examine two of these using panel data techniques and data on 218 manufacturing firms and the complete list of 44 authorised financial institutions observed over a six year period, 1987-88 to 1994-95. I examine whether there is a case for deliberation in a corporate governance framework given that the procedural justice mode is the only basis of strategic co-operation. The second issue that was evaluated relates to the implications of the adoption of a dominant strategy by shareholders given that the UK corporate governance framework places a primary reliance on the market for corporate control. My evidence shows that firm-specific factors are important in control changes as measured by top management turnover. Thus the crucial recommendation of the procedural justice based corporate governance framework, that deliberation will have to be an integral component of the corporate governance framework, has been validated by the empirical analysis. In the absence of strategic co-operation based on procedural justice mode the conceptual framework proposed envisages the adoption of dominant strategy by shareholders. The consequence of this will be an emphasis on power relations in the top management team in a bid to minimise their human capital risk. There will be ambiguity in the control changes as reflected by top management turnover. I also find evidence that demonstrates the role of power in control changes. Control changes as reflected by turnover of all directors and executive directors, in all the estimates, are found to be consistently related to CEO changes. Financial performance indicators are consistently inversely related to directors turnover in the manufacturing sector but their impact on directors as reflected by elasticity measures are very low. The effect of financial performance on the likelihood of CEO change is not sgnificant for all the measures used in the study. Thus the evidence shows that there is little accountability in the processes of corporate governance as reflected in the top management turnover. The conceptual framework proposed is not in conflict with the principal and agents framework. The empirical results have also been used to evaluate the significance of individual variables and compare and contrast with the findings of the existing literature on top management turnover. Analysis of the regulatory arrangement for authorised financial institutions has shown that the central banks act as the centrepiece of the control structure in the financial services sector. The role of the central banks in terms of corporate governance, however, has been to replace the conventional governance goal of shareholder wealth maximisation with concerns for depositors security and the stability of the financial system. There are very few studies on the functioning of corporate governance mechanisms in banks. Researchers are also increasingly interested in how corporate governance mechanisms in general, vary in different legal and regulatory environments. The study of the manufacturing and financial services sectors of the same country provides valuable evidence for this comparison of corporate governance under differing legal and regulatory arrangements.

Abstract:
Due to the sharpen regulation of the Swedish plain vanilla warrant in 2006 and the recent increase in trade among private investors, this thesis examined the informa-tion efficiency of Swedish plain vanilla warrants. This was done in three different ways. First the theoretical Black &amp; Scholes (B&amp;S) price was tested against the ac-tual market price. Secondly likelihood ratio test statistics was used to see whether information regarding past returns added any information to that already captured by the implied volatility (IV) generated from observed warrant market prices via the B&amp;S model. The third method used was a comparison of the IV´s among com-parable warrants. As the regulation of the Swedish plain vanilla warrant market states that only certified issuer are allowed short calls and puts, the self adjusting price mechanism found in the option market doesn’t exist on this market. As a con-sequence of this, investors on this market is reliant of accurate ask and bid prices from the issuers. Further, the information efficiency of a capital market is of es-sence for capital allocation, price discovery and risk management. The results from all three tests rejected the information efficiency hypothesis of the sample. Thus concluding that the included warrants in this thesis are none ideally for activities such as capital allocation, price discovery and risk management.

Abstract:
AbstractSignificant moments in history are often remarked upon by public figures in the form of quotes. As evidence of character traits and future political or personal decisions, quotes provide insight into the actions of their originators. The impact of a quote crosses language barriers and influences the public’s reaction to specific political stances. Nevertheless, effectively collating, attributing and analysing these quotes across languages remain challenging. Existing efforts have made strides in quote collections and analyses, yet several limitations persist, including a lack of context information, a labour-intensive extraction process and missing alignment of quote mentions across languages. Building upon QuoteKG, a multilingual knowledge graph of quotes that already addresses some of the aforementioned limitations, we present an approach for aligning quotes with event knowledge. QuoteKG is based on Wikiquote, a free and collaboratively created collection of quotes in many languages. Containing nearly one million quotes in 55 languages said by 69,000 people of public interest, QuoteKG extracts and aligns different mentions and contexts of quotes across a wide range of topics. We show that QuoteKG can be aligned with event knowledge. We use this alignment to enrich and analyse event-centric information by providing rich semantic context to important world events. QuoteKG is publicly available and can be accessed via a SPARQL endpoint.

In 2000 the National Science Foundation estimated that the market for nanotechnology products will be over one trillion US dollars by 2015 and that the industry would employ over 200 million workers. These numbers have been subsequently quoted from funding applications to government policy documents, but at the halfway point many of the revolutionary and disruptive technologies predicted have failed to emerge. Indeed, seven years on from the inception of the National Nanotechnology Initiative, there appears to be little sign of a nanotechnology based industry, although significant amounts of R&amp;D are being undertaken by various industries.1

Abstract The background to the development of the ASTM G96-90 Standard Guide for On-Line Monitoring of Corrosion in Plant Equipment (Electrical and Electrochemical Methods) is explained, together with a perspective of the other techniques used for in-plant monitoring. Methods to obtain maximum sensitivity for the electrical resistance technique, are described. The derivation of effective operating ranges for the linear polarization resistance technique quoted in the standard are explained further, in terms of two electrode, three electrode, and solution resistance compensation or IR drop. In summary, it is important to understand the limitations of plant monitoring techniques for corrosion, in order to maximize the quality of the data derived.

Abstract Inhibition is one of the most efficient methods of corrosion protection in many environments. However, most inhibitors provide synergitic properties when used in combination with other methods of corrosion protection. This report presents results of research on soluble inhibitors in combination with cathodic protection systems. Quoted parameters and critical concentration make corrosion prevention possible in different environments. It is established that inhibitors increase efficiency and longevity of protection. We have found that the consumption of inhibitors and the current of cathodic protection decrease 3-20 times. Soluble inhibitors together with cathodic protection systems should be used when corrosion protection is required in aqueous media, such as seawater, oil, gas, etc.

The two aspect ratios 1.0 and 0.5 analysed comparatively to perform a stability study of a 120° partial arc journal bearing have lubricated with a fluid of couple stresses. Reynold’s equation in modified form is obtained for couple stresses and coupled with elasticity equation to predict the impact of deformation in bearing liner on stability characteristics of journal bearing to know its performance. The results quoted here are in terms of attitude angle, somerfeld number, critical mass, whirl frequency and threshold speed. The conclusion made shows that the bearings with high aspect ratio (1.0) are more stable than aspect ratio 0.5 for the fluid of couple stresses and its stability is improved by the use of fluid with couple stresses. Threshold speed is reduced with an increase in the factor of liner deformation and shows that the region of stability is reduced on increasing deformation of bearing liner.

Abstract:
Abstract Use of corrosion inhibitors as gas drag reducing agents has been reported by Arco E&amp;P Technology. It was postulated in the literature that the drag reduction in gas transmission lines could be achieved by applying a thin coating on the pipeline inner surface to reduce friction between the flowing gas and pipe wall. Some corrosion inhibitors can adsorb strongly on the metal surfaces to form a smooth film similar to that of gas drag reducer to mitigate gas turbulence at the gas/solid interface. In an attempt to cost-effectively boost the gas production rate, a field trial was conducted in the Gulf of Mexico using the same chemical reported in the literature. Our results are in good agreement with the performance quoted in the literature, that is, the peak gas production rate increases by 10-15% and the peak pressure drop decreases up to 20%.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract Smart pigs are used extensively as part of integrity management plans for oil and gas pipelines to detect metal loss defects, with magnetic flux leakage (MFL) technology being the most-widely used. The MFL signal gives an inferred defect size, not a direct measurement: when the signal is translated into a defect size, it has associated sizing tolerances and confidence levels. The complexity of signal analysis means that these sizing tolerances and confidence levels are difficult to determine and apply in practice. They have a major effect when assessing the significance of the defect, and when calculating corrosion growth rates from the results of multiple inspections over time. This paper describes how sizing algorithms are constructed and how the quoted tolerances are derived. Probability theory can be used to estimate the likelihood that a defect is smaller or deeper than the reported value. Finally, the effect of defect sizing tolerances and their confidence levels on corrosion growth projections is illustrated, and how they must be taken into account in any defect assessment is emphasised.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract Pull-off adhesion testing is widely used to assess the protective coating process. It is also used to determine if a coating is fit for service in new construction and for repairs to existing structures. The result is often critical to the acceptance or rejection of a coating process, as the adhesion value quoted by the paint manufacturer can be adversely affected by aspects of the coating process. Low adhesion values are indicative of premature failure of the coating and are often due to inadequate surface preparation of the substrate. ASTM D4541 and BS EN ISO 4624 describe several different test apparatus; however, the basic approach of gluing a test dolly to the coated surface and then exerting a perpendicular force to the surface in an effort to remove both the dolly and the coating from the substrate is common to all these standards. A measure of the adhesion of the coating system is the force at which the coating fails and the type of failure obtained. Trials have demonstrated that many aspects of the testing method, such as the mixing of the glue, the preparation of the coating surface and the face of the dolly and the temperature of the test, all affect the results. This paper will investigate the effects of any deviation from the proscribed method in every aspect of the test. Each aspect is examined in turn, the results tabulated and the potential effect on a valid adhesion test result is discussed.

Abstract:
Abstract Kuwait has proven oil reserves of over 100 billion barrels which represents about 9% of the world’s oil. It ranks 10th in the world in crude oil production with a figure of ~2.5 million barrels per day (2010 estimates). However, the latest production figures for 2011 are quoted as a capability of 3.0 million barrels per day. The country’s goal is to increase the production to 4.0 million barrels per day by the year 2020. Our company is the primary national organization responsible for exploration, drilling, production and processing of the crude. The number and length of crude pipelines as well as the pipelines for other products (condensate, gas and water) have cumulatively grown to about 4750 km over the last 60 years. ILI pigging data has indicated internal corrosion damage in some pipelines. Coupon corrosion data along with fluid analysis and bacteria analysis data from various locations have in general confirmed internal corrosion damage in low spots. A comprehensive Corrosion Management Plan for the Pipeline Network System has been established involving the following: (a) Internal Corrosion Monitoring to assess the internal corrosion status of the pipeline including the occurrence of microbially influenced corrosion (MIC), (b) External corrosion protection with the help of coatings and cathodic protection (CP), and (c) Periodic pigging operations for corrosion assessment and internal cleaning. The present paper will discuss the salient features of the Internal Corrosion Management Plan.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract For the past forty years, the oil industry has relied on two recommended standard practices (API RP-38 and NACE TM0194), which provide guidance on how field samples should be collected, analysed and results interpreted. Both documents highlight the enumeration of viable bacteria by culture techniques as the standard method for routine monitoring and anomaly investigation. API RP-38 has now been withdrawn. Within the appendices of TM0194 the possible availability of molecular microbiology techniques is mentioned, but no detailed guidance or standard method for the application of any of the molecular tools is currently available. As the application of molecular tools in environmental microbiology is developing rapidly, it is clear that a wide range of analyses are now available as potential tools to at last reveal ‘mysteries’ such as the complex metabolic processes causing the problems of microbial influenced corrosion (MIC), persistence in the presence of biocides and the souring of reservoirs during seawater flooding. However, these methods must be applied with caution. Whilst they undoubtedly offer the potential of huge strides forward in our understanding of oil field bacteria communities, there are no ‘off the shelf’ solutions and standardised methods will ultimately be required if comparative data are to be generated across the industry. This paper presents a summary of the benefits and drawbacks of some of the most commonly quoted molecular microbiology techniques together (where available) with examples of their application to field samples.

Full text
Abstract:
We study the interdependence of FX and Treasury Bonds (TES) markets in Colombia. To do this, we estimate a heteroskedasticity identified VAR model on the returns of the COP/USD exchange rate (TRM) and bond prices, as well as event-analysis models for return volatilities, number of quotes, quote volume, and bid/ask spreads. The data under analysis consists of 5-minute intraday bid/ask US dollar prices and bond quotes, for an assortment of bond species. For these species we also have the number of bid/ask quotes as well as their volume. We found, also, that the exchange rate conveys information to the TES market, but the opposite does not completely hold: A one percent COP depreciation leads to a persistent reduction of TES prices between 0.05% and 0.22%. However, a 1% TES price increase has a very small effect and not entirely significant on the exchange rate, i.e. a COP appreciation between 0.001% and 0.009%. Furthermore, TRM return volatility increases do not affect bond return volatility but its liquidity, i.e. the bid/ask quote number and volume. These results are coherent with the fact that the FX market more efficiently reflects the effect of shocks than the TES market, which may be due to its low liquidity and concentration on a specific habitat. These results have implications for the design of financial stability policies as well as for private portfolio design, rebalancing and hedging.

Abstract:
The method of heating water by means of a water jacket installed in the firebox of a solid-fuel burner, connected by pipes to a hot-water cylinder (HWC), was once commonplace in New Zealand, but has become less so in recent years. These systems, known as wetbacks, are covered by Building Code Clause G12, but considerable confusion has been caused by conflicting rules specified in the two main compliance documents, G12/AS1 and AS/NZS 3500.4 (hot water). In both compliance documents, wetback systems are defined as ‘uncontrolled heat sources’ with specific rules and limitations that stipulate how they are to be installed, and to keep them safe. However, other than common safety rules, each has entirely different ‘mandatory’ installation rules that affect the efficiency of the systems. They couldn’t both be right, but they could both be wrong. This is further confused by another standard, NZS 4603:1985, being mentioned in G12 as ‘another acceptable solution’ and differing from and contradicting both of the above. This standard is often quoted by manufacturers in their instructions. One driver of this research, from a regulatory view, was to determine which of the two main compliance documents was correct, if either.

Duryea, Suzanne, Claudia Martínez, and Raimundo Smith. Disability Employment Quotas: Effects of Laws and Nudges. Inter-American Development Bank, 2024. http://dx.doi.org/10.18235/0005522.

Abstract:
We study the effects of a new 1% employment quota enacted in Chile in 2018 using anonymized administrative data on monthly employer-employee linkages and disability certification records. Our firm-level difference-in-difference results show a 15-20% increase in the number of people with disabilities working in eligible firms after the quota. About a third of the employment effects occur through the relabeling of existing workers as workers with disabilities, and the remainder through new hires. There are no negative effects found for the firms or other workers. We also conducted an experiment in quota-eligible firms to study if firms can be nudged to employ people with disabilities (PwD) by sending letters containing different information. We find that the pure information treatment increased the number of PwD working in the firms and that most of this impact is explained by an increase in the reclassification of incumbent workers. While not transformational for the labor market, inclusion of PwD, quotas and nudges do have an effect.

Abstract:
The scientific research considers and analyzes the epistolary heritage of Olena Teliha. Excerpts from her correspondence are presented, which testify to the formation of a brilliant woman, a creative personality who played an extremely important role in the struggle for the formation of Ukrainian statehood. It is from the letters that we learn that for her letters are almost an ideal way of communication. The epistolary heritage of Olena Teliha allows us to reveal the vision of the main processes in her personal life against the background of the general historical discourse. In addition, the main communicative visions that determine her creative personality are highlighted: communicative vision of friendship, love, creation of literary talent, perseverance and strength, resistance to rejection. Attention is focused on the importance of studying and researching the epistolary heritage of creative personalities in the context of social communications. From the quoted letters, which are distinguished by their sincerity and accuracy of expression, it is possible to determine and formulate what positions and ideas the civic activist, poet and publicist adhered to. In addition, we can see the line of consistency in the formation of a creative personality who not only lives and writes, but acts – creates history, its moment, the value of which is felt and understood by future generations. It is found that the life path in its interconnection with historical circumstances and social environment influenced the formation of the creative personality of the genius poet and publicist. The peculiarities of the epistolary of Olena Teliha are determined by the circumstances, people and personalities that she had to face in life. The promising areas of research are the letters of Olena Teliha, which are in the archives of other countries and the allocation of journalistic and documentary aspects of her epistolary heritage. Keywords: epistolary heritage, letters, public figure, journalism, creative personality.

Abstract:
As part of the overall focus on the democratic backsliding in Hungary since Viktor Orbán’s Fidesz reassumed power in 2010, numerous international observers have expressed concern regarding increasing Hungarian influence in the Western Balkans. Specifically, many fear that through intensified meddling in Western Balkan affairs, Orbán’s Hungary would spread its illiberal influence throughout the region and subsequently undermine broader EU policy. In 2019, the process leading to the appointment of Olivér Várhelyi (a Hungarian diplomat close to Orbán) to the position of the European Commissioner for Neighbourhood and Enlargement garnered a salvo of criticism. While this incident briefly attracted the European media floodlights to the topic, the issue of Hungarian influence in the region of the Western Balkans quickly faded into a relative obscurity. Apart from few exceptions and a handful of journalistic accounts (which will be quoted extensively throughout the study), there are little to no attempts to analyse and explain Hungarian foreign and trade policy in the Western Balkans. What interests and strategic considerations drive Hungarian foreign and trade policy in the region? What are Hungarian foreign policy priorities and what instruments does Hungarian foreign policy have at its disposal in the region? Is Orbán’s Western Balkan policy marked by a total discontinuity with regards to previous Hungarian foreign policy towards the region? Who formulates foreign policy priorities in Hungary and what is the interplay between formal and informal actors? What economic interests shape Hungarian foreign policy in the region? How much has Hungarian foreign policy in the region changed as a result of war in Ukraine? To answer these questions, this paper is divided into four main sections. The first focuses on Hungary’s foreign policy strategy in the region. The second, as a special case study, investigates the effects of Orbán’s minority politics in Serbia’s Autonomous Province of Vojvodina (Vajdaság in Hungarian). The third, researching Hungarian media empire in the region, and finally the fourth focusing on the economic drivers of Hungary’s approach in the region.

Abstract:
Not opening scientific data is costly. It has been estimated that a significant share of scientific knowledge disappears every year. In a 2014 study less than half of biological datasets from the 1990s have been recovered and when possible the recovery has necessitated significant time and efforts. In comparison, 98% of datasets published on PLOS with unique identifiers (data DOIs) are still available for future research. Open scientific data are fundamental resources for a large variety of scientific activities: meta-analysis, replication of research results or accessibility to primary sources. They also bring a significant economic and social value, as scientific data is commonly used by non-academic professionals as well as public agencies and non-profit organizations. Yet open scientific data is not costless. Ensuring that data is not only downloadable but usable requires significant investment in regards to documentation, data cleaning, licensing and indexation. Not all scientific data can be shared and verifications are frequently necessary to ensure that they do not incorporate copyrighted contents or personal information. To be effective, data sharing has to be anticipated throughout the entire research lifecycle. New principles of scientific data management aims to formalize the preexisting cultures of data in scientific communities and apply common standards. First published in 2016, the FAIR Guiding Principles (findability, accessibility, interoperability, and reusability) is an influential framework for opening scientific data. Policies in support of data sharing have moved from general and broad encouragement to the concrete development of data sharing services. Early initiatives go back to the first computing infrastructures: in 1957 the World Data Center system aimed to make a large range of scientific data readily available. Open data programs were yet severely limited by the lack of technical support and compatibility for data transfer. After 1991, the web created a universal framework for data exchange and entailed a massive expansion of scientific databases. Yet, numerous projects ran into critical issues of long term sustainability. Open science infrastructure have recently become key stakeholders in the diffusion and management of open scientific data. Data repositories ensure the preservation of scientific resources as well as their discoverability. Data hosted on repositories are more frequently used and quoted than data published in a supplementary file.

Abstract:
This paper describes a large-scale field experiment conducted in the US auto repair industry to study the existence and structure of gender-based price discrimination in service markets. Women receive price quotes that are 2% (over 10 dollars) higher than those received by men. These differences disappear when women signal low search costs, suggesting statistical rather than taste-based discrimination. Price requests that appear to come from high-income households raise quotes for men but not women, eliminating the gender gap. The price gap also falls with the number of nearby repair shops, suggesting that market competition alleviates gender-based price discrimination.
