Abstract:
In this contribution we summarize recent efforts to describe the production of rare isotopes with beams of 15–25 MeV/nucleon expected from low-energy facilities. We first present calculated production cross sections of proton-rich nuclides from collisions of stable beams of mass A∼60–80. Our calculations are performed with the phenomenological deep-inelastic transfer (DIT) model and the microscopic con- strained molecular dynamics model (CoMD). De-excitation of the excited quasipro- jectiles from the dynamical stage of the reaction is performed with the statistical multifragmentation model (SMM). In addition to the efforts on proton-rich nuclides, we investigated the possibility of producing neutron-rich rare isotopes in the mass range A∼180–200, i.e. near the third r-process peak of A=195. We performed calcu- lations for a 208Pb (15MeV/nucleon) beam and find that the multinucleon transfer mechanism leads to very neutron-rich nuclides in this mass range. We believe that our continued progress on the study of multinucleon transfer reactions using heavy- ion beams of 15–25 MeV/nucleon, can provide new opportunities in rare isotope research in the near future, as planned at the KOBRA facility of RISP in Korea.

Abstract:
A problem of the operational reliability and safety of both tailing dams and sludge collectors of the industri-al wastes has been considered. Dangers and threats due to the emergency situations have been demonstrated in terms of the world and national experience of the operation of such objects. Certain irrelevance of modern regula-tory conditions of the environmental and technogenic safety provision during the operation of those objects has been emphasized. That is caused mainly by the fact that the collectors were designed and constructed in the last century; moreover, the threats are possible due to their long-term operations without proper engineering and technical maintenance. The research has been carried out involving the conventional methods. Preliminary visual and instrumental diagnostic inspections of the object conditions have been performed; mathematical calculations have been carried out; analytical analysis has been applied. Analysis of technical conditions and accident risks in terms of the earth border dike of a tailing dam has been proposed in the context of the object in Dnipropetrovsk region. It has been identified that under current operating conditions, that hydrotechnical structure has potential-ly hazardous sites of landslide formations and collapsing of the downstream side due to the filtration defor-mations. Threat degree λ=0.647 and vulnerability degree νу=0.333 of the object have been specified on the basis of the conventional methodologies. According to the principle of intersections of those events, integral evaluation of accident risk R=0.215 has been defined which corresponds to the decreased safety level of the object operation. Calculation and modeling of the probable development of the earth dike failure have been performed. General indices of the duration of hydrodynamic accident and parameters of the washout formation in the structure body have been identified. Overall time for the tailing dam emptying is about 6 hours. The obtained results can be the basis to provide reliability and safety of the trailing dam operation during the forecasting of accident risks and failure consequences. Compulsory elaboration of the documentation concerning evaluation of the environmental impacts of both tailing dams and slurry collectors has been highlighted. The documentation should include calcu-lations of probable accidents and provide action plan as for the hydrodynamics accident within the tail bay. Keywords: earth dike, tailing dam, hydrodynamic accident, integral risk evaluation.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Background:Valid and reliable self-report measures of physical activity (PA) are needed to evaluate the impact of interventions aimed at increasing the levels of PA. However, few valid measures for assessing PA in Latino populations exist. Objective:The purpose of this study is to determine whether the GPAQ is a valid measure of PA among Latinas and to examine its sensitivity to intervention change. Intervention attendance was also examined. Methods:Baseline and postintervention data were collected from 72 Latinas (mean age = 43.01; SD = 9.05) who participated in Caminando con Fe/Walking with Faith, a multilevel intervention promoting PA among church-going Latinas. Participants completed the GPAQ and were asked to wear the accelerometer for 7 consecutive days at baseline and again 6 months later. Accelerometer data were aggregated into 5 levels of activity intensity (sedentary, light, moderate, moderate-vigorous, and vigorous) and correlated to self-reported mean minutes of PA across several domains (leisure time, work, commute and household chores). Results:There were significant correlations at postintervention between self-reported minutes per week of vigorous LTPA and accelerometer measured vigorous PA (r = .404, P < .001) as well as significant correlations of sensitivity to intervention change (post intervention minus baseline) between self-reported vigorous LTPA and accelerometer-measured vigorous PA (r = .383, P < .003) and self-reported total vigorous PA and accelerometer measured vigorous PA (r = .363, P < .003).Conclusions:The findings from this study suggest that the GPAQ may be useful for evaluating the effectiveness of programs aimed at increasing vigorous levels of PA among Latinas.

Abstract:
BackgroundThe influence of acculturation and nativity on depression in Latinos remains highly contested. One potential source of ambiguity is variation in their beliefs about the causes of their mental health ailments.MethodsWe conducted cross-sectional analyses of 450 older Latinos attending a rural mental health clinic near the U.S.-Mexico border. Primary diagnosis was grouped in one of 5 categories. The Center for Epidemiological Studies of Depression (CES-D) scale was used to measure depressive symptoms. Cultural variables included nativity and a validated acculturation scale. Patients rated their level of endorsement of 13 causes of mental health ailments A one-way ANOVA was conducted to identify cultural predictors of attribution items.ResultsLatinos had a mean age of 70.9 (SD = 9.1). The most common primary diagnoses were depressive disorders (67.1%) and dementia (15.3%). The mean CES-D score was 15.08 (SD = 18.16), but higher for the more acculturated (p = 0.048), and patients with psychotic (M = 26.31, SD = 19.78) and bipolar (M = 26.05, SD = 19.54) disorders. Acculturation increased attribution of mental health ailments to significant others (ρ = 0.091; p = 0.054), difficulty with work (ρ = 0.162; p = 0.001), and hereditary factors (r = 0.202, 95% CI = 0.002, 0.403). Patients with psychotic disorders were most likely to attribute their symptoms to curses (p = 0.001) and supernatural factors (p = 0.024) compared to other diagnostic categories.ConclusionsAcculturated Latinos attriattribute their mental health ailments to life circumstances. This may intensify depressive symptoms and partly explains the relationship between acculturation and depressive symptoms. Further, the patients’ major diagnosis must be considered when evaluating acculturative influences on depression in psychiatric populations.

Mokrini, F., L. Waeyenberge, N. Viaene, and M. Moens. "First Report of the Cereal Cyst Nematode Heterodera latipons on Wheat in Morocco." Plant Disease 96, no. 5 (May 2012): 774. http://dx.doi.org/10.1094/pdis-11-11-0999-pdn.

Full text
Abstract:
From May to June 2011, during a survey of the wheat-growing areas in Meknes in the Saïs Region of Morocco, several cyst nematode populations were detected. Sampling was performed 1 month before wheat (Triticum durum) harvest, in fields showing patches of stunted plants. Plants were growing poorly, had chlorotic lower leaves, and a reduced numbers of ears. Root systems were short and had a bushy appearance because of increased secondary root production. No cysts were visible on the roots, but were found in the soil. Cysts were collected from soil on 200-μm sieves by the modified Cobb decanting and sieving method (1) and identified by morphology and internal transcribed spacer (ITS)-rDNA sequencing. All isolates were identified as Heterodera avenae except the isolate from Aïn Jemâa. From the latter, key morphological features from cysts and second-stage juveniles (J2) were determined. The cysts (n = 10) had the following characteristics: bifenestrate vulval cone, body length without neck 590 μm (551 to 632 μm), body width 393 μm (310 to 490 μm), neck length 75 μm (65 to 90 μm), fenestra length 64 μm (60 to 72 μm) and width 21 μm (18 to 25 μm), underbridge length 96 μm (85 to 115 μm), vulval slit length 8 μm (7 to 9 μm), vulva bridge width 27 μm (24 to 33 μm), and bullae absent. The J2s (n = 10) had the following characteristics: body length 445 μm (412 to 472 μm), body width 19 μm (19 to 21 μm), stylet length 24 μm (23 to 25 μm), four lateral lines, tail length 50 μm (46 to 54 μm), and hyaline terminal tail 28 μm (24 to 31 μm). Values of the morphological characters were within the range of H. latipons reported by Handoo (3). The bifenestrate cysts with a strong underbridge and no bullae and J2 with a tail length greater than 40 μm, a stylet longer than 15 μm, and four incisures in the lateral field were typical for H. latipons. To confirm the identification, molecular observations were made. DNA was extracted from three juveniles from three different cysts separately (4). The ITS-rDNA region was amplified using the primers 5′-CGT AAC AAG GTA GCT GTA G-3′ and 5′-TCC TCC GCT AAA TGA TAT G-3′ as described by Ferris et al. (2). This resulted in a 1,040-bp DNA fragment. The PCR-products were purified and sequenced (Macrogen, Inc., Seoul, Korea). All sequences obtained (GenBank Accession Nos. per cyst: JQ319035, JQ319036, and JQ319037) were compared with sequences available from the GenBank database ( www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov ), including several species of Heterodera. This comparison revealed a sequence similarity of 97 to 99% with H. latipons and 89% or lower with any other species of Heterodera. Morphological and molecular identification demonstrated that the population of cyst nematodes from a wheat field in Aïn Jemâa, Morocco was H. latipons. In the patches with poor growing plants, 65 cysts per 100 cm3 soil were found. To our knowledge, this detection represents a new record of H. latipons. Since the nematode can cause considerable damage to wheat, one of the main cereals produced in Morocco, care should be taken to prevent the spread to other regions. References: (1) K. R. Barker.

Abstract:
Latinos are at increased risk for developing chronic conditions. Regular physical activity (PA) assists in protecting adults from developing type 2 diabetes, excess weight, and heart disease, making PA important for health promotion. This cross-sectional, descriptive investigation was conducted with adults 18 years of age and older in a predominately Latino community. Perceptions of factors which influenced PA were examined. Descriptive statistics and multiple regression analysis were performed. Immigrant Latino males engaged in PA significantly more often than female participants. In Latino participants, those who engaged in walking activities were more likely to engage in both vigorous ( r = .341, p<.005) and moderate PA ( r = .317, p <.001). Self-efficacy and acculturation were significant predictors of PA. Acculturation was associated with physical activity, even after adjusting for perceived stress. Findings highlight the continued importance of self-efficacy to foster health promotion in Latino communities.

Abstract:

Abstract:
BackgroundThe aims were to investigate cross-culturally the subjective experience of long-term psychiatric patients to determine whether or not they would define their current life situation predominantly in terms of illness.MethodThe design is a two-by-two comparison by ethnicity (Latino and Euro-American) and diagnosis (schizophrenia and unipolar depression) of 80 subjects for DSM–III–R criteria according to the SADS. Patients were interviewed using a semi-structured interview (Context of Illness Experience) yielding data coded for qualitative and quantitative analyses.ResultsWhile significant ethnic differences were observed, nearly half the sample did not include illness in their description of their life situation. Other domains (e. g. activities, events) and the extent to which patients perceived themselves as in- or out-of-step with the “rhythm of life” were identified as central patient concerns.ConclusionsEmpirical research on the subjective experiences and representations of the life situation of patients offers clues to the course and treatment of persistent psychiatric disorder.

Abstract:
We investigated whether common inflammatory markers are associated with bone accumulation in lean pubertal girls. Thirty-four 10–12-yearold lean girls at pubertal stages 2–4 were studied. Twelve inflammatory parameters [interleukin (IL)-2, IL-4, IL-6, IL-8, IL-10, vascular endothelial growth factor, interferon-gamma (IFN-γ), tumour necrosis factoralpha, IL-1α, IL-1β, monocyte chemotactic protein-1 (MCP-1) and epidermal growth factor] were measured from plasma samples. Whole body (WB), lumbar spine (LS) and femoral neck (FN) bone mineral density (BMD), and WB bone mineral content (BMC) were assessed by DXA. Plasma IFN-γ concentration was negatively correlated (p<0.05) with WB BMC (r=–0.45), WB BMD (r=–0.46) and FN BMD (r=–0.43). In addition, plasma IL–6 (r= –0.37; p<0.05), IL-1α (r=–0.40; p<0.05) and MCP-1 (r=–0.38; p<0.05) concentrations were also negatively correlated to measured BMD values. The stepwise regression analysis showed that IFN-γ alone and together with IL-1α explained 18.6% and 27.6%, respectively, of the variability in WB BMD, while IL-1α and MCP-1 together explained 25.5% of the variability in LS BMD, and IL-1α together with IFN-γ explained 34.1% of the variability in FN BMD. In conclusion, plasma IFN-γ, IL-6, IL-1α and MCP-1 concentrations were associated with BMD variables, suggesting that these cytokines may participate in bone accumu lation in lean pubertal girls.

Abstract:
While the commercialization of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) is rapidly expanding, the environmental impact of this nanomaterial is not well understood. Therefore, the present study evaluates the acute aquatic toxicity of SWCNTs towards two freshwater microalgae (Raphidocelis subcapitata and Chlorella vulgaris), a microcrustacean (Daphnia magna), and a fish (Oryzias latipes) based on OECD test guidelines (201, 202, and 203). According to the results, the SWCNTs inhibited the growth of the algae R. subcapitata and C. vulgaris with a median effective concentration (EC50) of 29.99 and 30.96 mg/L, respectively, representing “acute category 3” in the Globally Harmonized System (GHS) of classification and labeling of chemicals. Meanwhile, the acute toxicity test using O. latipes and D. magna did not show any mortality/immobilizing effects up to a concentration of 100.00 mg/L SWCNTs, indicating no hazard category in the GHS classification. In conclusion, SWCNTs were found to induce acute ecotoxicity in freshwater microalgae, yet not in D. magna and medaka fish.

Abstract:
This book is a delightful read. The somewhat unoriginal title (compilationsof conversion accounts under the title Islam Our Choice have been aroundfor several decades, including stories that date back to the mid-twentiethcentury) belies the original and unique stories told within. However, thesewords might be rather startling for many non-Muslims, and thus piquetheir curiosity enough to pick up the book and inquire further.Islam Our Choice, aimed primarily at non-Muslim Americans, tellsthe stories of fellow Americans who have chosen to follow a different pathbut who are still Americans. The authors express the hope that “each non-Muslim American reader will probably be able to relate to and identifywith the pre-Muslim background of at least one of the authors” (p. 2). Theinclusion of family photos and illustrations adds to the book’s visualappeal and shows the contributors as ordinary Americans who are at homewith their new identity as Muslims.Although the contributors cover a wide range of geographical locations, levels of education, and career paths, their ethnic and religious backgroundscover a narrower range. Most of the respondents were former Christians ofvarying denominations, and most are white; one African-American womanalso contributed her story. It is now well known that there are Jewish,Latinos/Latinas, and Native American converts, and, hopefully, their storieswill be told in the near future in order to present a fuller picture of how Islamis reaching all sections of American society. The book opens with a brief overview of Islamic faith and practice, Islamin America, and a comparison between the position of women in modernAmerica and in Islam. This sets the scene, as it were, for readers who may beunfamiliar with the Muslim world and with Muslim communities in the West.Written according to the introduction’s general outline, each chapterrelates the story of an American woman who has come to Islam. All contributorsoffer insight into their childhood worlds, whether they were cozyand relatively uneventful, or dogged by poverty and such family troublesas alcoholism. Debra L. Abstract:
Latino farmworkers have a higher rate of depression when compared with other Latinos and the general adult population in the United States. Researchers have suggested oppressive labor policies, acculturation stressor, anti-immigrant polices and attitudes, and the dangers associated to farm work as culprits to high rates of depression among farmworkers. We examined the traits farmworkers reported that helped them mitigate symptoms of depression. Our sample consisted of 64 adult male and female farmworkers who lived in western Texas and worked in Eastern New Mexico. We used the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale Revised (CESD-R) and self-reports of symptoms of depression to assess for depression. We found that, among this sample, the rates of depression were similar to other studies and that farmworkers used cognitive restructuring strategies to mitigate symptoms of depression.

Abstract:
Abstract Objectives Gut microbial composition has been associated with diet quality and health outcomes and has also been found to vary across ethnic groups. We explored how ethnic differences in food consumption may mediate some of the ethnic variation in the gut microbiome (GM). Methods In a subset of 5,280 Multiethnic Cohort participants, based on a food frequency questionnaire administered in 2003–2008, we assessed overall diet quality using the Healthy Eating Index (HEI-2015; scores 0–100) and specific food consumption using the intake amounts of 10 component food groups used to define common diet quality indexes. GM composition was obtained from 16S rRNA gene sequencing of a stool sample (2013–2016; age 59–98 years) and estimated in genus proportions (as the centered log ratio (CLR) transformed counts). Using mediation analysis, we determined the % of the total ethnicity effect on the genus proportion for each of the ethnically divergent bacterial genera mediated by overall diet quality and component food groups, while adjusting for age, sex, total energy intake, body mass index, and antibiotics use. Results Overall diet quality was highest in Whites (mean HEI-2015 = 73.1) and African Americans (72.7), followed by Japanese Americans (71.3), Native Hawaiians (70.1) and Latinos (68.9). Of the 152 genera, 7 with the largest ethnic variation (CLR difference for the genus between most vs. least abundant ethnic group > 1) were examined for mediation. Five genera showed significant mediation of their ethnic differences through diet (P < 0.00,045 for Bonferroni correction), ranging from the −12% for Flavonifractor in African Americans vs. Whites mediated by vegetable intake to the 19% for Christensenellaceae R-7 group in Latinos vs. Whites mediated by overall diet quality. Large mediation effects were also seen by saturated fat for Ruminococcaceae NK4A214 in African Americans vs. Whites (18%) and by alcohol for Erysipelatoclostridium in Latinos vs. Whites (18%). Conclusions Overall diet quality and component foods may contribute substantially to ethnic differences in gut bacterial composition. These novel findings may help the development of targeted dietary interventions to improve the gut health of specific ethnic groups. Abstract:
In the medaka, Oryzias latipes, the mechanism of sex determination (XX/XY) can be revealed by genetic crosses using a body-colour gene, though it does not have cytologically recognizable sex chromosomes. The recombination restriction of sex chromosomes in heterogametic (XY) males has been demonstrated. To elucidate whether the recombination is prevented by the heterogamety of the sex chromosomes or by maleness, we examined the recombination frequencies among three loci located on the sex chromosomes (r, SL1 and SL2) in heterogametic males (XY), homogametic males (XX and YY), homogametic females (XX) and heterogametic females (XY). The recombination frequencies between r–SL1 and SL1–SL2 were as follows: 0, 0 (XY males); 0, 1·5 (XX males); 1·6% (YY males; 1·2%, 14·4% (XY females); 0·8%, 21·8% (XX females). These results indicate that the recombination restriction of the sex chromosomes in heterogametic males does not result from heterogametic sex chromosomes, but from maleness. Such sex-chromosome- specific recombination restriction in heterogametic sex may have triggered the differentiation of sex chromosomes in vertebrates.

Abstract:
The influence of scotoperiod, ambient temperature and humidity on the activity of captive wombats was examined to differentiate environmental influence from that pertaining to food availability. The activity of 12 wombats (Lasiorhinus latifrons) housed at Rockhampton Zoo was remotely monitored by digital video-surveillance for one year, with environmental variables simultaneously recorded via dataloggers. Mean proportion of total daily time spent active was 18.2 ± 1.8%. Mean daily time spent active varied seasonally according to changes in temperature and humidity. Mean daily activity was greater during winter (301 ± 17 min) and spring (295 ± 16 min), than summer (234 ± 16 min) and autumn (238 ± 15 min) with differences due to a decrease in the number and length of activity bouts in summer and autumn; presumably these results reflect a need to maintain heat balance associated with exposure to elevated temperatures. Activity was positively correlated with temperature during winter (r = 0.60) and spring (r = 0.52) but negatively correlated during summer (r = –0.58) and autumn (r = –0.49), suggesting the existence of a thermoneutral zone where activity is maximised. We conclude that activity in captive wombats is influenced by environmental variables.

Abstract:
Backround: Elabela (ELA) is a hormone that is secreted at high levels in the kidneys of a healthy adult. This study aims to investigate whether serum ELA levels of patients with Type 2 Diabetes vary with the severity of renal damage. Methods: Our study included 50 healthy control subjects and 100 diabetic patients, who were categorized into groups based on urine albumin/creatinine ratios (ACR). Patients included in the study were assigned to four groups: Group 1 (healthy control), Group 2 (ACR<29mg/g), Group 3 (ACR=30-299 mg/g), and Group 4 (ACR>300 mg/g normal or high serum creatinine). Physical examination findings, demographic characteristics of the study group were recorded, and serum ELA levels and other laboratory parameters were assessed using appropriate methods. Results: The results of the study indicated that ELA levels determined in healthy individuals gradually decreased through stages of normal albuminuria, microalbuminuria, and macroalbuminuria. Moreover, ELA had a significant negative corre- lation with LDL-C (r=-0.201, p=0.014), glucose (r=-0.437, P<0.001), retinopathy (r=-0.222, P=0.006), serum BUN (r=- 0.161, P=0.049), and a positive correlation with eGFR (r=0.250, P=0.002). Conclusions: The fact that ELA levels are higher in healthy individuals compared to diabetic patients without microalbu- minuria, and higher in diabetic patients without microalbuminuria compared to patients with advanced albuminuria and kidney damage, suggests that the ELA level can be an important clinical prognostic variable and even a promising agent for the treatment of diabetic nephropathy patients. Abstract:
AbstractObjectiveMeasurement error in self-reported total sugars intake may obscure associations between sugars consumption and health outcomes, and the sum of 24 h urinary sucrose and fructose may serve as a predictive biomarker of total sugars intake.DesignThe Study of Latinos: Nutrition & Physical Activity Assessment Study (SOLNAS) was an ancillary study to the Hispanic Community Health Study/Study of Latinos (HCHS/SOL) cohort. Doubly labelled water and 24 h urinary sucrose and fructose were used as biomarkers of energy and sugars intake, respectively. Participants’ diets were assessed by up to three 24 h recalls (88 % had two or more recalls). Procedures were repeated approximately 6 months after the initial visit among a subset of ninety-six participants.SettingFour centres (Bronx, NY; Chicago, IL; Miami, FL; San Diego, CA) across the USA.SubjectsMen and women (n 477) aged 18–74 years.ResultsThe geometric mean of total sugars was 167·5 (95 % CI 154·4, 181·7) g/d for the biomarker-predicted and 90·6 (95 % CI 87·6, 93·6) g/d for the self-reported total sugars intake. Self-reported total sugars intake was not correlated with biomarker-predicted sugars intake (r=−0·06, P=0·20, n 450). Among the reliability sample (n 90), the reproducibility coefficient was 0·59 for biomarker-predicted and 0·20 for self-reported total sugars intake.ConclusionsPossible explanations for the lack of association between biomarker-predicted and self-reported sugars intake include measurement error in self-reported diet, high intra-individual variability in sugars intake, and/or urinary sucrose and fructose may not be a suitable proxy for total sugars intake in this study population.

Objective To examine hemolysis in falciparum and vivax malarialpatients based on serum bilirubin examination. Methods A cross sectional study was conducted on childrenyounger than 15 years of age who visited public health center inthe district of Mandailing Natal with complaints of fever, shivering, pale, jaundice, diarrhea, or headache between April 9 th and April19 th 2001. Variables recorded were age, gender, body weight, bodyheight, symptoms and signs, anti malarial drugs, and laboratorytest results. Thin and thick blood smears were done as diagnostictools of malaria. Thin blood smear was also performed to deter-mine the level of malaria parasites in blood (parasitemia) and toexamine the morphology of red blood cells. Hemolysis was deter-mined by bilirubin examination. Results In P. falciparum malaria, there was a moderate correlation(r=0.68, p<0.0001) between parasitemia and indirect bilirubin con-centration. While in P. vivax malaria, there was only a weak corre-lation (r=0.46, p=0.007) between parasitemia and indirect bilirubinconcentration. It was also found that in falciparum malaria, para-sitemia, total and indirect bilirubin concentrations were significantlyhigher than that in vivax malaria, with p values of 0.009, 0.015 and0.003, respectively. Conclusion Hemolysis in falciparum malaria is more severe thanthat in P. vivax malaria, with marked elevation of indirect bilirubin. The elevation of serum bilirubin correlated with parasitemia

AbstractThe effect of dietary resveratrol (40 µg g−1 BW day−1) on cell-mediated immunity (the activity of spleen phagocytes and the proliferative response of lymphocytes) and liver histology (hepatocyte morphometry, lipid vacuoles, and glycogen granules) in adult medaka (Oryzias latipes) (aged two years, body weight BW = 0.49 g) were tested after ten days of feeding with experimental diets. The fish were fed either a commercial diet (control group C) or this same diet supplemented with resveratrol (group R) three times daily at 3% of body weight (BW). Fish fed feed with resveratrol had significantly higher intracellular phagocyte killing activity than did those in the control group (P < 0.05). No differences in the sizes of hepatocytes or their nuclei were observed in the fish from groups C and R. The nucleo-cytoplasmic ratio ranged from 0.39 (± 0.03; group R) to 0.42 (± 0.03, group C) in adult medaka exposed to the two dietary treatments (P > 0.05). The results indicated that the diet supplemented with resveratrol at a dose of 40 µg g−1 BW day−1 had no impact on the liver tissues. Typical hepatocytes with lipids and glycogen were observed to the same extent in the vacuoles. Moreover, no mortality or pathological changes were noted in the fish studied. The diet containing resveratrol helped to maintain disease resistance without affecting the liver tissue after ten days of feeding.

Abstract:
AbstractWe present a phylogenetic revision of theSticta filixmorphodeme in New Zealand. This non-monophyletic group of early diverging clades in the genusStictais characterized by a stalked thallus with a green primary photobiont and the frequent formation of a dendriscocauloid cyanomorph. Traditionally, three species have been distinguished in New Zealand:S. filix(Sw.) Nyl.,S. lacera(Hook. f. & Taylor) Müll. Arg. andS. latifronsA. Rich., with two cyanomorphs separated under the namesDendriscocaulon dendriothamnodesDughi ex D. J. Galloway (traditionally associated withS. latifrons) andD. dendroides(Nyl.) R. Sant. ex H. Magn. (traditionally associated withS. filix).Sticta lacerawas not included in the present study due to the lack of authentic material (all specimens originally identified under that name and sequenced clustered withS. filix);S. filixwas confirmed as a distinct species whereasS. latifronss. lat. was shown to represent two unrelated species,S. latifronss. str. and the reinstatedS. menziesiiHook. f. & Taylor. The cyanomorphs ofS. filixandS. latifronsare not conspecific with the types of the namesD. dendriothamnodesandD. dendroides, respectively; theD. dendriothamnodescyanomorph belongs to the Australian taxonSticta stipitataC. Knight ex F. Wilson, which is not present in New Zealand, whereas theD. dendroidescyanomorph corresponds to a previously unrecognized species with unknown chloromorph, recombined here asSticta dendroides(Nyl.) Moncada, Lücking & de Lange. Thus, instead of three species (S. filix,S. lacera,S. latifrons) with their corresponding cyanomorphs, five species are now distinguished in this guild in New Zealand:S. dendroides(cyanomorph only),S. filix(chloro- and cyanomorph),S. lacera(chloromorph only),S. latifrons(chloro- and cyanomorph) andS. menziesii(chloro- and cyanomorph). A key is presented for identification of the chloromorphs and the dendriscocauloid cyanomorphs of all species. Semi-quantitative analysis suggests that species in this guild are good indicators of intact forest ecosystems in New Zealand and that the two newly recognized species,S. dendroidesandS. menziesii, appear to perform particularly well in this respect. The use of lichens as bioindicators of environmental health is not yet established in New Zealand and so, based on our results, we make the case to develop this approach more thoroughly.

Abstract Objective Adaptations of the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale, Revised (WAIS-R) and accompanying norms exist for a limited number of Spanish-speaking populations, but none are available for US-dwelling Spanish speakers of Mexican origin, who make up the largest proportion of Latinas/os in the US. As part of a larger test adaptation and norming effort for Spanish-speakers from the US-Mexico border region, we generated and investigated demographically adjusted interpretive norms for selected WAIS-R subtests. Participants and Method Participants included 183 community-dwelling, primarily Spanish-speaking individuals, aged 20 to 55 (education range: 0-20 years; 58% female), who were residing in the US-Mexico border region. Participants completed the WAIS-R Spanish version (Block Design, Arithmetic, and Vocabulary subtests) as part of a larger neuropsychological battery. Demographically adjusted T-scores were calculated for these subtests using fractional polynomial equations, which controlled for age, education, and sex. We examined rates of neurocognitive impairment (T < 40) in our sample derived from the present demographically adjusted Spanish speaking norms and from the existing WAIS-R demographically adjusted norms for English-speaking Non-Latina/o White and Black adults. Results Based on the normalized distribution of T-scores, the newly developed regional Spanish-speaker norms yielded subtest rates of impaired performance between 13-16% (i.e., within the expected -1 SD). By comparison, the proportion of impaired subtest performances was between 4-6% when applying the existing English-speaking norms to our sample. Conclusions Regional normative data will improve interpretation of test performance on selected WAIS-R subtests for Spanish-speakers living in the US and will facilitate a more valid analysis of neuropsychological profile patterns in this population. Cross-validation with Spanish-speakers in other regions and/or with other national origins is needed.

Abstract:
AbstractThe growing significance of global electronic commerce has led to the increased use of computer support during negotiation of deals, which until now has been carried out almost exclusively via face-to-face (FTF) communication or other high-feedback media (e. g., telephone), but not via computer-mediated communication (CMC). To analyze this process and its outcomes, the following research questions were examined in this study: How do CMC and FTF contribute to a win-win strategy in negotiation? How do CMC and FTF affect the participants' ability to empathize with each other? Are the negotiation strategies of Anglo, Nordic, and Latin negotiators affected differently depending on the medium? Is the ability of Anglo, Nordic, and Latin negotiators to empathize with each other affected differently depending on the medium? On the basis of our results, we surmise that CMC does not allow negotiators to employ a cooperative win-win strategy (as recommended by negotiation-strategy training). We see significant differences when we examine the use of personal pronouns and speech acts by the Anglo, Nordic, and Latin culture clusters. When we look at the use of cooperative speech acts, a similar situation occurs: in contrast to Anglos, who behave in a cooperative way, Latins are significantly less cooperative and Nordics use many more general speech acts in the CMC setting.

Abstract:
Abstract The detrimental effects of loneliness and chronic pain on functioning in later life are well documented, yet there is little evidence of whether these patterns hold across racially diverse older adults. Guided by the Biopsychosocial Model of Assessment, Prevention, and Treatment of Chronic Pain, we used data from Waves 2 and 3 of the National Social Life, Health, and Aging Project (NSHAP) to examine the additive and interactive effects of loneliness and chronic pain on Elemental and Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (ADLs & IADLs) among a sample of 1046 Latino and White adults aged 50 and over. Using linear regression analyses, our final models (Adjusted R-squares: .316 & .304) included demographic characteristics, physical and mental health, medication, health behaviors and social factors. In this sample, approximately 33% experienced chronic pain, 50% reported at least transitory loneliness and 22% experienced both. Neither loneliness nor chronic pain was independently associated with functioning impairment. However, these two factors in combination were associated with lower scores on ADLs and I-ADLs. In addition, Latinos who reported chronic pain were more likely to report lower scores on ADLs only. Results highlight variations in the detrimental effects of loneliness and chronic pain for white and Latino elders. Findings suggest the need for interventions that address chronic pain and loneliness simultaneously. Future studies should examine how culturally-grounded experiences of loneliness and chronic pain may contribute to worsening of functioning among diverse groups of Latino elders.

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this study was to explore early childhood teachers’ sense of efficacy for working with immigrant children. In addition, this study examined the relationship of early childhood teachers’ sense of efficacy to their multicultural attitudes. Design/methodology/approach Ninety early childhood teacher participants completed a demographic questionnaire, as well as the Teachers’ Sense of Efficacy Scale, long form (Tschannen-Moran and Woolfolk Hoy, 2001) and Teacher Multicultural Attitude Survey (Ponterotito et al., 1998). Findings The statistical analysis resulted in a significant difference found between teachers’ sense of efficacy when working with Latinos versus when working with Marshallese students, t(82) = 4.64, p < 0.001, and that the teachers’ sense of efficacy was positively correlated with their multicultural attitudes score, r = 0.266, p = 0.013. Research limitations/implications The finding that early childhood teachers have differing levels of efficacy for working with different populations of immigrants, and that efficacy seems to be linked to multicultural attitudes, has implications for teacher educators and for professional development initiatives. Practical implications This appears to be an important starting point for professional learning efforts directed at teachers with lower levels of efficacy for working with their diverse students. Originality/value There was no prior research done focusing on different immigrant populations and the corresponding teachers’ sense of efficacy when working with them. The results shown support the idea that teachers’ multicultural attitudes appear to be significantly linked to their sense of efficacy, when working with immigrant students, especially within the area of student engagement.
