Abstract:
This study deals with the role of neuropeptide Y (NPY) in the regulation of cell proliferation. NPY is expressed in the normal and tumoral prostate, but no data on its possible role in prostate cancer (PCa) progression are available. Therefore, we evaluated the direct effect of NPY on the growth of the human PCa cell lines LNCaP (androgen dependent) and DU145 and PC3 (androgen independent). All PCa cell lines expressed Y1-R gene and protein. NPY treatment reduced the proliferation of LNCaP and DU145 cells and increased that of PC3 cells. The activation of epidermal growth factor receptor (EGF-R) plays a key role in the promotion of proliferation and invasion in prostatic carcinoma (PCa). Gefitinib (Iressa; ZD1839), an orally active EGF-R tyrosine kinase inhibitor, has shown an important anti-proliferative activity in tumors expressing EGF-R both in vitro and in vivo. Our aim was to elucidate the role of gefitinib in the modulation of the metastatic spread of PCa cells. Abstract. Between 1988 and 1998, annual tuna landings at Buenaventura (Colombian Pacific) are correlated with the sea surface temperature in the central Equatorial Pacific (r=0.78, p<0.05) and the sea level height at Buenaventura (r=0.76, p<0.05) and Balboa (Panama) (r=0.79, p<0.05). Seasonal oceanic upwelling is forced by the Panama wind jet, which may favour oceanic fisheries such as tuna. Abstract:
The recent proposed Tensor Nuclear Norm (TNN) [Lu et al., 2016; 2018a] is an interesting convex penalty induced by the tensor SVD [Kilmer and Martin, 2011]. It plays a similar role as the matrix nuclear norm which is the convex surrogate of the matrix rank. Considering that the TNN based Tensor Robust PCA [Lu et al., 2018a] is an elegant extension of Robust PCA with a similar tight recovery bound, it is natural to solve other low rank tensor recovery problems extended from the matrix cases. However, the extensions and proofs are generally tedious. The general atomic norm provides a unified vie

Abstract:
Principal component analysis (PCA) is an efficient model for the optimization problem of finding d' axes of a subspace Rd' ⊆ Rd so that the mean squared distances from a given set R of points to the axes are minimal. Despite being steadily employed since 1901 in different scenarios, e.g., mechanics, PCA has become an important link in machine learning chained tasks, such as feature learning and AutoML designs. A frequent yet open issue that arises from supervised-based problems is how many PCA axes are required for the performance of machine learning constructs to be tuned. Accordingly, we inv

A district cooling system (DCS) is a system that distributes thermal energy through chilled water from a central source to residential, commercial, or industrial consumers, designated to air conditioning purposes. It is one of the most important part of a heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration systems (HVAC), because a DCS is composed of: Cooling towers, central chiller plant, water distribution systems and clusters of consumer buildings. This research is focused on the central chiller plant, due to it accounts for a substantial portion of the total energy consume of DCS and

There is a rapid increase with application of turbochargers, variable valve timing engines, lubricant developments and other aspects that increase engine efficiency. As fuel consumption reduces through further engine developments, the engine lubricant oil consumption will become a larger contributor to engine exhaust emissions. Lubricant oil consumption can be through four systems within the turbocharged engine, which are: 1. PCV (positive crankcase ventilation), 2. VSS (valve stem seals), 3. Turbocharger, 4. PCU (power cylinder unit). Overall engine oil consumption is reliably quantified usin
