Abstract:
Abstract:

Abstract:
The paper presents a complete study of the work done by Pier Luigi Nervi for the design and construction of a series of concrete hangars between 1935 and 1940. This research is enclosed in the framework of the exhibition entitled "Pier Luigi Nervi, il modello come strumento di progetto e costruzione" that gathers researches from Università degli Studi di Bologna, Università di Roma Tor Vergata and Politecnico di Milano. The exhibition was used as a starting point for a general discussion about the meaning of the logical passage that leads engineers and architects from physical scaled models to numerical structural models. The Politecnico di Milano contributed to re-writing the first experiences of Pier Luigi Nervi and Arturo Danusso in the structural modeling. Scaled models, nowadays substituted by finite element methods, were widely used in the past, for the understanding of the structural behavior of complex structures. Unfortunately, many of these masterpieces have been destroyed during the years (as happened to the two original models tested by Pier Luigi Nervi and reproduced for the exhibition). <br/> In the last part of the paper, based on numerical results, the structural behavior of these hangars is deeply discussed, underlining all the principal strengths and weaknesses of these complex structures.

Abstract:

Sisir K. Mandal of Asian Paints R&T Centre, Mumbai used (Tetrahedron Lett. 2013, 54, 530) a Ru catalyst to couple 2 with an electron-rich arene 1 to give 3. Jun-ichi Yoshida of Kyoto University (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2013, 135, 5000) and John F. Hartwig of the University of California, Berkeley (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2013, 135, 8480) also reported direct amination protocols. Tommaso Marcelli of the Politecnico di Milano and Michael J. Ingleson of the University of Manchester effected (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2013, 135, 474) the electrophilic borylation of the aniline 4 to give 5. The regioselectivity of Ir-catalyzed borylation (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2013, 135, 7572; Org. Lett. 2013, 15, 140) is complementary to the electrophilic process. Professor Hartwig carried (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2013, 52, 933) the borylated product from 6 onto Ni-mediated coupling to give the alkylated product 7. Weiping Su of the Fujian Institute of Research on the Structure of Matter devised (Org. Lett. 2013, 15, 1718) an intriguing Pd-mediated oxidative coupling of nitroethane 9 with 8 to give 10. The coupling is apparently not proceeding via nitroethylene. Peiming Gu of Ningxia University developed (Org. Lett. 2013, 15, 1124) an azide-based cleavage that converted the aldehyde 11 into the formamide 13. Zhong-Quan Liu of Lanzhou University showed (Tetrahedron Lett. 2013, 54, 3079) that an aromatic carboxylic acid 14 could be oxidatively decarboxylated to the chloride 15. Gérard Cahiez of the Université Paris 13 found (Adv. Synth. Catal. 2013, 355, 790) mild Cu-catalyzed conditions for the reductive decarboxylation of aromatic carboxylic acids, and Debabrata Maiti of the Indian Institute of Technology, Mumbai found (Chem. Commun. 2013, 49, 252) Pd-mediated conditions for the dehydroxymethylation of benzyl alcohols (neither illustrated). Pravin R. Likhar of the Indian Institute of Chemical Technology prepared (Adv. Synth. Catal. 2013, 355, 751) a Cu catalyst that effected Castro-Stephens coupling of 16 with 17 at room temperature. Arturo Orellana of York University (Chem. Commun. 2013, 49, 5420) and Patrick J. Walsh of the University of Pennsylvania (Org. Lett. 2013, 15, 2298) showed that a cyclopropanol 20 can couple with an aryl halide 19 to give 21.

Abstract:
In a world stressed by a cultural crisis, carachterised by excessive abstraction and virtuality (ex: R.Reich’s Symbolic-analysts or/and R. Florida’s Creatives), observing self built city constitute not an escape but an exploration to change our point of view and find a new path of development. Self building involves at any scale, a practical attitude and return to an psychosomatic interaction among inhabitants and built environment. Focusing in self-building can become a Slowskij’s “estragement” to reactivate different sensibilities, for a new philosophy in contemporary design. Morphological reading of self-built environments has a double importance: for self-built cities themselves, to give response to the need of social cohesion, for a restructuring that traduces these needs into building and transforms the plural individual needs into a collective urban structure; for the enrichment that this reading can give to the architectural community culture, a new panorama where we can search new path to go over the crisis; The paper focuses on the scales that goes from building and construction material scale to urban fabric scale. Starting from the observation of a brick’s furnace, through the observation of an original constructive system, up to the aggregation of each built organism in the urban fabric it will be possible to read and interpret the formative process and to evaluate, through design experience cases, some new path for the contemporary design that come from this interpretation of self-built: design as a formative process re-activation, artisanal-not authorial sensorial design; References G. E-mail: giancarlo.salamone@uniroma1.it Keywords (3-5): Restructuring, Rome, Trastevere, process, reading method, tools, analysis in urban morphology Conference topics and scale: Tools of analysis in urban morphology Trastevere, the only area of the historic center of Rome (together with the Vatican / Borgo complex) located on the right side of the Tiber river, shows a morphological structure that depends on the pre-existing substrate, both road that typological, which was modified during the post-unity period by the establishment of the Tiber fronts and, above all, by the opening of Viale Trastevere. In the way of thinking about urban morphology as a scalar product of the factors that influence each other, in particular building typology, local structure, overall structure and territory, and that contribute together to generate an organism, it is therefore possible to read this part of the historical center as the last product, but not definitive, of a "process". The reading method on the consolidated structure, later renovated in a post-unification era, is based on the analysis of the most abundant building typology and on the permanence and derivations of local typological processes that led to the formulation of the “line house” in nineteenth-century line, the predominant building type of roman expansion in nineteenth-twentieth century. The reading of the restructuring, understood as synchronic action on the historical center, has been implemented instead by the analysis of synchronic variations at “line house” through the research of all projects registered for the edification of each block. Thus we can see how the blocks resulting from the transformation, in the logic of a restructuring "contromaglia" like the one for the opening of Viale Trastevere, will be the result of the disconnection of the existing blocks in which the building type adopted has had to adapt to a lower return situations: a reading of a synchronic action on a diachronic process that gives us the modern morphological apparatus. Abstract:
Fatigue and aging of electrical overhead transmission lines is a major concern nowadays in developed countries with ever increasing difficulties to build new lines and an already quite aged network. An important degradation phenomenon of overhead line cables is fretting fatigue close to the suspension clamps due to vortex induced vibrations (VIV). These VIV are generally observed for wind speeds in the range of 1 to 7 m/s. The existing industrial practice for predicting how prone cables are to VIV fatigue is based on a balance between the power generated by the wind and the power dissipated by the cable system. The power generated by the wind has been evaluated through measurements on real line spans and through wind tunnel experiments on rigid and flexible cylinders as a function of frequency and vibration amplitude. The wind tunnel measurement results are mainly performed for constant flow speed. Corresponding results show a scattering from simple to double. Furthermore, complementary investigations are required to better evaluate the power with wind speed variations across and along the overhead line span. EDF R&D (with Code_Saturne open source software) and Politecnico di Milano have evaluated CFD modeling on a mobile rigid cylinder with comparison to detailed wind tunnel measurement results performed by Politecnico di Milano on a 20 cm diameter rigid cylinder equipped with a pressure scanner. This paper presents the steps, the different questions raised, the difficulties and limitations for the setting and the realization of the CFD modeling approach. The comparison between experimental results and simulation results is presented for the mobile rigid cylinder with k-ω SST turbulence model.

Abstract:
If the morphology and the studies on the urban form are closely related to the social aspects and are responsibility of architects and policy makers, the issue becomes even more complicated if we're talking about cities with a high number of buildings under public ownership or urban fragments with important dimensions. In Italy there is a very rare case of recent foundation that is the neighborhood Monteruscello in the city of Pozzuoli. Built in the 80s to face the bradisism events that had made uninhabitable other city areas, Monteruscello today, for its dimension, can be considered a "city in the city" where the 90% of the buildings are under public ownership. The neighborhood's project is designed by Agostino Renna who had built Monteruscello through analogical composition with fragments of spatial references of other places and cities. The architect has put in the neighborhood - mainly made up of rural areas - its urban model adapting it to the specific geography of places. During the years the neighborhood has never built an own identity becoming one of the most degraded areas of the city. The paper deals with the issue of urban form and morphology today starting from the study of Monteruscello - as imagined by its creator through the critical issues that underlie its design - and through an experimental design of a new agro-urban landscape for the neighborhood that involves three hectares of public green spaces - now abandoned - turning them into agricultural lands to urban use and growth resource. The morphological approach in the reading of the Territorial City Maria Gagliardi Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura de Barcelona, UPC. Av. Diagonal, 649. 08028 Barcelona E-mail: bissolati27@hotmail.it Keywords (3-5): Territorial city, territorial grid, accumulation process, relief of innovative elements. Conference topics and scale: City transformations The crisis of the traditional city, with its morphological characteristics, has been largely debated. The new urban phenomenon has almost always been described as antithetical; by contrary this article interrogates the possibility of reading a continuity between the traditional and the contemporary city. The article brings forth the concept that the territory can be described as an urban phenomenon result of a change of scale of the city, and offers the definition of the contemporary city as Territorial City (Città-Territorio). The article recovers this term introduced in the 70’s by the Italian morphological school, to emphasize the continuity with the European traditional morphological schools, taking advantage of its learnings, to compare the traditional city, with the contemporary city. The relevance of a morphological approach in the study of the contemporary Territorial City is discussed through an excursus of the main European schools’ contributions, with a particular schematization due to geographical areas. From the synthesis of these references emerges a basis for the definition of a Taxonomy organised around tree main elements that constitute the urban grid. Moreover, the article proposes a methodology for the analysis of the Territorial City that use the Taxonomy as reading tool; this method, illustrated through his experimentation on the Metropolitan Region of Barcelona, is of particular relevance towards the interpretation of the dynamics that have characterised the morphology of the current urban phenomenon, describing its aggregation logics and decomposing the historical-procedural continuum. Abstract:
Freight trains all over European Countries are equipped with mechanical couplers, which are using two buffers and a screw coupler in the centre. This configuration needs an extensive study in case of pulled mass exceeding 1600 t: actually National Association would limit train mass to 2000/2400 tons, in order to avoid excessive stresses on couplers. This challenging operative condition should become really severe in presence of switches or sharp radius curve, especially considering that freight trains are able to sustain deceleration in emergency braking condition over 1 m/s2. As well known, in order to investigate the safety issue of heavy freight trains under severe braking/traction conditions (i.e. emergency braking) also negotiating turnouts or sharp curves, an experimental approach can be performed, using a suitably instrumented trainset. Unfortunately, this approach is usually very expensive and does not provide a full understanding of the problem: the information gained with experimental tests would apply only to the particular trainset composition and to the specific track considered. On the other hand, the adoption of numerical simulations, in connection with the experimental tests, can be a useful approach to extend obtained results to a wider range of conditions, allowing an easier variation of the different test parameters. The paper will deal with the investigation performed by Politecnico di Milano together with R.F.I. (Rete Ferroviaria Italiana, the Italian Railway Network operator) on the heavy freight train dynamics. An experimental approach has been used in order to investigate the typical operative condition of a freight train; a freight wagon has been equipped with load cells, displacement transducers on the buffers and tri-axial accelerometers on the wagon frame. Moreover the traction/braking torque applied by the locomotives have been measured. The experimental trainset was composed by two heading locomotives, a series of freight wagons (pulled mass 1600 t), and then another locomotive at the end of the train. The results of the test allowed a better comprehension of the behaviour of the complete trainset, on a steep line, especially during sharp curve negotiation (R = 200 – 300 m): particular attention was paid on the buffer behaviour, because of its fundamental importance for the running safety of the wagons. It was highlighted that the operative condition typical of a sharp radius curve negotiation leads to a stiffer buffer: the increased stiffness of the buffer cannot be neglected for the investigation of the running condition. These tests were used to update an existing numerical software for the analysis of the longitudinal dynamics of heavy freight train, named T.S.Dyn. (Trainset Dynamic Simulator): its numerical model is able to reproduce forces/displacement in the coupling between two adjacent vehicles (buffers and draw gear) of a trainset. Moreover the model is able to consider the dynamic behaviour of the pneumatic braking system of the entire trainset and for this reason it can find proper application even for the simulation of severe braking condition (i.e. emergency braking). The numerical model has been updated taking the advantage of the experimental activity performed and it was implemented in T.S.Dyn code. A comparison between numerical and experimental results will be described in the full paper.
