Abstract. We have established a soil moisture profile monitoring network in the Raam region in the Netherlands. This region faces water shortages during summers and excess of water during winters and after extreme precipitation events. Water management can benefit from reliable information on the soil water availability and water storing capacity in the unsaturated zone. In situ measurements provide a direct source of information on which water managers can base their decisions. Moreover, these measurements are commonly used as a reference for the calibration and validation of soil moisture co

This case study presents the nutrient intake of a cyclist while training for and competing in the Race Across AMerica (RAAM). Carbohydrate accounted for 65% of the calories consumed during training (4,743 kcal), 75% during 24-hr races (10,343 kcal), and 78% during RAAM (8,429 kcal). Gastrointestinal complaints during RAAM included nausea, feeling of fullness, and abdominal distension. Although probably exacerbated by sleep deprivation, these problems were all diet related. Ba

One of the main reasons is to understand how information might be represented in the human brain. The ability to construct and manipulate recursive symbol structures is regarded as fundamentally important in the domain of cognitive modelling. The aim of this thesis dissertation is to explore how well Pollack's Recursive Auto-Associative Memory (RAAM) networks can represent and facilitate the manipulation of highly-recursive structures. Using mainly skewed and balanced binary trees, the representational power of the RAAM architecture is examined for structures which are lexically simple and syntactically complex. This is in contrast to much published work on RAAM networks, in which the stru

In recent years it has been claimed that connectionist methods of representing compositional structures, such as lists and trees, support a new form of symbol processing known as holistic computation. In a holistic computation the constituents of an object are acted upon simultaneously, rather than on a one-by-one basis as is typical in traditional symbolic systems. This thesis presents firstly, a critical examination of the concept of holistic computation, as described in the literature, along with a revised definition of the concept that aims to clarify the issues involved. The use of compositional recursive structures form the bedrock of many application areas. Such structures allow data to be stored and manipulated. In contrast, connectionism has a much shorter history in providing techniques to encode the recursive structures necessary for tasks such as natural language processing (NLP). <p>Connectionist models have been criticized for not being able to form compositional representations of recursive data structures such as trees and lists, a matter that has been addressed by models as Elman networks, RAAM and B-RAAM. These architectures seem to have common features with the human short-term memory regarding recall. Both show a strong recency effect; however, the human memory also exhibits a primacy effect due to rehearsal. The problem is that the connectionist models do not have the primacy aspect, which complicates the learning of long-term dependencies. A long-term dependen

The current national security environment and fiscal tightening make it necessary for the Department of Defense to transition away from a threat based acquisition mindset towards a capability based approach to acquire portfolios of systems. This requires that groups of interdependent systems must regularly interact and work together as systems of systems to deliver desired capabilities. Technological advances, especially in the areas of electronics, computing, and communications also means that these systems of systems are tightly integrated and more complex to acquire, operate, and manage.
