The white New Zealand rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus) is frequently used as a model for in vivo studies. However, information on precautions when using this animal as an experimental model is limited. This review of the literature covers the gamut from the selection of the animal model all the way to its death, and describes procedures for transporting, raising, breeding, housing, administering anesthesia and handling so as to rationalize the utilization of this species while exploiting its unique characteristics. Background & Aims: Peripheral nerve injury models require a reproducible surgical technique that provides a simple and extensile peripheral nerve exposure. We present a muscle sparing apprach to the sciatic nerve in a rabbit model. A combination of general anestheia, sedative and perioperative analgesics was given to minimize animal discomfort. Methods: A posterior lateral dissection of the rabbit hind leg was performed to expose the proximal sciatic nerve. This facilitated an extensile dissection of both the proximal and distal sciatic nerve. Results: The described dissection is atraumati

To assess the suitability of new IOP lowering therapeutic strategies, such as the implantation of glaucoma drainage devices, appropriate animal models have to be used. Currently, a number of rodent glaucoma models are available [1], however, especially for surgical interventions rodent eyes are too small. Rabbits are much more suitable with respect to dimension. Subrenal xenografts of ROPV-infected rabbit vulvar and penile sheath tissues were strongly positive for ROPV infection by histologic, in situ hybridization, and Southern analyses. Purpose. Animal models play an important role in abdominal wall hernia research. However, there is still no standard animal models for abdominal wall hernia. This study aimed to introduce a novel rabbit model of giant abdominal wall hernia. Methods. Sixteen 1-year-old New Zealand rabbits weighing 3 to 5 kg were used. After general anesthesia, a 5-cm longitudinal incision was made 2 cm lateral to the ventral midline, and a full-thickness laparotomy incision was made en bloc including the peritoneum (except skin). A full-thickness defect of the abdominal wall with a diameter of 3 cm was created.

Stimulating a rabbit ventricular cell with a train of current pulses at a long basic cycle length (BCL) and high pulse amplitude (PA) leads to a 1:1 rhythm, where each injected pulse generates an action potential. With a fixed BCL (BCL = 300 ms at 34--36°C and BCL = 1000 ms at 22--24°C), as PA is decreased, there is a transition from 1:1 rhythm to Wenckebach rhythms. These rhythms are characterized by a beat-to-beat increment in latency and action potential duration (APD) culminating in a skipped beat. Abstract:
In an attempt to develop an animal model for the study of the effects of fluid shear stress on platelet in vivo survival we examined the effects of repetitive short-duration (5 sec) and continuous prolonged (5 min) shear exposure in a cone-plate viscometer and Couette rotational viscometer on platelets (in citrated platelet-rich plasma) from humans, rabbits, dogs, and pigs. Comparable platelet aggregation (PAG = loss of single platelets) (18-64%) was observed with platelets from all species, associated with dense granule release, as a function of shear stress amplitude (25-50 dyn/cm2) under th

Abstract:
Arachidonic acid metabolites seem to play a pivotal role in the pathophysiology of endotoxin (ET) shock. Therefore, attempts to intervene into the balance of eicosanoids may affect the course of ET shock. Several studies had shown a reduction of ET-induced mortality by non-steroidal antiinflammatory drugs in various animal species. We investigated whether an infusion of prostacyclin (PGI2) has an effect on survival rates and on the incidence of renal microclots in a rabbit shock model, which is based on an intravenous infusion of ET over 4 hours. Thirty animals being exposed to 75 μg/kg x h of

Ateriod obtained from beef mucosal lining is a sulfomuco-polysaccharide mixture of various glycosaminoglycans which contains derma tans, heparatans and traces of heparin. It has been used in the treatment ofatherosclerosis and related vaso-oclusive disorders. Ateriod is standardized in terms of its lipoprotein lipase activation actions. Ateriod contains signfi-cant in vitro anticoagulant and antiprotease (anti-factor Xa and anti-factor Ila) activities as measured by clot-based and chromr ogenic substrate methods. However, this in vitro activity is 7-10 times lesser than heparin. In order to st

Abstract:
The New Zealand White (NZW) rabbit is often used as an animal model in posterolateral intrertransverse lumbar fusions [1]. Qualitative measures, such as manual palpation and radiographs, have been used to assess fusion mass [1]. However, an evaluation by sacrifice and biomechanical testing is the gold standard for quantitative data. A non-invasive approach to quantitatively assess the mechanics of spinal fusion could allow longitudinal studies with decreased need for animal sacrifice.

Abstract:
The success of intravenous infusion of rt-PA in the treatment of myocardial infarction, along with new applications in deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism has stimulated interest in optimizing dosage regimens. Dosage strategies should be tested in a relevant animal model before clinical use. In the RJVM, net lysis is calculated frcm the difference in 1-125 fibrinogen present in a rabbit jugular vein thrombus, pre and post thrombolytic therapy, therefore changes in the rate of lysis would not be detected. To continuously monitor rates of lysis in the RJVM, a flat surface garrma detector
