Rab27 is a member of the Rab family of Ras-like GTPases and is expressed in two isoforms, Rab27a and Rab27b that share 72% amino acid identity. Previous studies have suggested Rab27a and Rab27b to regulate inflammation through exocytosis in a variety of leukocytes including T lymphocytes, NK cells, mast cells and neutrophils. A key process in inflammation is mast cell secretion, a process in which Rab27b has been established as a positive regulator but the role of Rab27a remains unclear. This thesis analyzes the text of Genesis Rabba, one of the largest and most important of the rabbinic midrashim. It pays particular attention to its use of the term miyyad ("immediately"). Two specific patterns of usage are identified. Through these patterns, the thesis demonstrates how Genesis Rabba's midrash is simultaneously a work of narrative and of exegesis, and comments on some aspects of these two functions. It also traces the lexical evolution of the word miyyad in Hebrew.

The Or ha-Sekhel of Abraham ben Asher (Venice, 1567) is of great importance in the history of the study of midrash because it is the first book in which Genesis Rabba was accompanied by commentaries, one spuriously attributed to Rashi and the other written by Abraham ben Asher himself. The composition of a commentary on a midrash was something of a novelty in the mid-16th-century; immediate precedents are hard to identify. There are more than 60 Rab proteins in mammals constituting the largest family among the Ras superfamily of GTPases. Rab proteins are essential components of the intracellular secretory machinery, regulating transport and exocytosis of various intracellular organelles including secretory granules. This thesis examines the philosophy of language of Rabbi Dov Baer of Mezritch (d. 1772), one of the most influential and creative early Hasidic masters, and the teacher whose students effectively created the Hasidic movement. I argue that Dov Baer offers an innovative approach to the role of language in religious life and its relationship to the inner workings of the human psyche. In contrast to scholars who emphasize aspects of Dov Baer’s thought that idealize silence, my research demonstrates that he embraced words as a divine gift, even describing the faculty of speech as an element of God
