This is an unfinished story. It deals with an artisanal fishing project, jointly planned by a local political-administrative body, the Rabi Council of Leaders, and this anthropologist. The project presently is in an early stage of implementation. In 1945, the small Banaban community of Ocean Island (Banaba) in present-day Kiribati was relocated to Rabi Island in Fiji. The Balabans were ostensibly moved due to irreversible damage done to Ocean Island during Japanese occupation in the Second World War. However, this was largely a convenient excuse to facilitate the wholesale phosphate mining of the island by the British Phosphate Commission, a consortium of the British, Australian and New Zealand governments. A new species of shrimpgoby, Tomiyamichthys reticulatus, is described on the basis of a single specimen taken at 16 m from a fine, silty-sand bottom at Rabi Island, Fiji. It differs from the other 12 valid described species in the genus on the basis of high fin-ray counts a combination of 12 dorsal and 13 anal-fin soft rays and 21 pectoral-fin rays, as well as a lanceolate caudal fin.

This article outlines the environmental disaster that was phosphate mining on Banaba – or Ocean Island, as it was known to outsiders. The article tracks the tactics used by what became the BPC (British Phosphate Commissioners) in extracting phosphate from the island, resulting in the removal of 90 per cent of its soil and simultaneously alienating Banabans from their land, livelihoods and culture. While the appeal of ‘civilisational dialogue’ is on the rise, its sources, functions, and con- sequences arouse controversy within and between faith communities. Some religious lead- ers have attempted to clarify the religious foundations for such dialogue. Among them are Jonathan Sacks, the Chief Rabbi of the United Hebrew Congregations of Britain and the Commonwealth, Edward Idris, Cardinal Cassidy of the Catholic Church, and Fethullah Gülen.
