Abstract:
This article examines the complexities of race and teaching identity and their coupling with desire. The author contributes to a theory of critical literacies for ESL by questioning the construction of whiteness as it relates to ESL. She draws on a cross-disciplinary bibliography of critical pedagogy, cultural, and feminist studies. She suggests that an interesting paradox in critical literacy is the simultaneous breaking down of binary identities while continuing to offer up a socially transformative curriculum.

Gray, Nicole Haworth. "Spirited media : revision, race, and revelation in nineteenth-century America." Thesis, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/2152/27550.

Full text
Abstract:
"Spirited Media" analyzes distributed structures of authorship in the reform literature of the nineteenth-century United States. The literature that emerged out of reform movements like abolitionism often was a product of complex negotiations between speech and print, involving multiple people working across media in relationships that were sometimes collaborative, sometimes cooperative, and sometimes antagonistic. The cultural authority of print and individual authorship, often unquestioned in studies that focus on major or canonical figures of the nineteenth century, has tended to obscure some of this complexity. Moving from phonography, to Josiah Henson and Uncle Tom’s Cabin, to spiritualism, to Sojourner Truth and Walt Whitman, I consider four cases in which reporters, amanuenses, spirit mediums, and poets revived and remediated the voices of abolitionists, fugitive slaves, and figures from American history. By separating publication into events—speech, inscription, revision, and print—I show that "authorship" consisted of a series of interactions over time and across media, but that in the case of reform, the stakes for proving that authorship was a clear and indisputable characteristic of print were high. For abolitionist, African American, and spiritualist speakers and writers, authority depended on authorship, which in turn depended on the transparency of the print or the medium, or the perception of a direct relationship between speaker and reader. Like authorship, this transparency was constructed by a variety of social actors for whom the author was a key site of empowerment. It was authorized by appeals to revelation and race, two constructs often sidelined in media histories, yet central to discussions of society and politics in nineteenth-century America. Thinking of authorship as a distributed phenomenon disrupts models of the unitary subject and original genius, calling attention instead to uncanny acts of reading and writing in nineteenth-century literature. This dissertation argues that we should think about the transformative power of U.S. literature as located in revelation, not just creation, and in congregating people, not just representing them.

Full text
Abstract:
The production of an emulsion by emulsification plant without the addition of chemical additives always requires an injection device of the dispersed phase (water or ethanol) into the continuous phase (fuel oil). In this way, a preliminary mixture of immiscible liquids is produced at the right volume ratio. Such a mixture is processed downstream to have an emulsion with the dispersed phase drop mean diameters less than 4 μm. Since Gas Turbines have a variable fuel flow related to the delivered power, there is the necessity of maintaining a prescribed dispersed phase to continuous phase volumetric ratio when the fuel flow varies. This paper deals with an automatic device that is capable of producing the prescribed injection ratio of the dispersed phase into the fuel oil when the fuel oil flow rate changes. Such a device is developed to be coupled with an emulsification system that provides to break an immiscible part of fluid in a very small drops. The system is for feeding fuel into engines (S.I. Gasoline, Diesel, Gas Turbine combustors) operating at variable loadings i.e variable liquid fuel flow. The mixer (PMD, Pre-Mixer Device) has been presented at ASME Turbo Expo (Montreal 2007) for diesel #2 operating at 25°C with the viscosity being assumed as constant because of its variation is in a reduced range. In this paper, different fuels having different viscosities (diesel oil of different numbers, rapeseed oil, sunflower oil, etc) have been tested. The major modeling aspect concerns with the behavior of the annular orifice that produces a membrane displacement. A bibliographic analysis has been performed and the main results are reported in this paper. Since the architecture of the orifice, its geometry and the flow conditions were not reported in the bibliography, systematic experiments have been performed. Such experiments have been carried on for various liquids having various viscosities for different geometric arrangements and force acting on the membrane. The analysis of results led to formulate models to describe both the discharge flow and effective force coefficients. The paper gives a complete outlook of the experiments and of the above models. The viscosity dependent models have been introduced in to the PMD simulation code. Such models that take the influence of viscosity into account have been developed and some scale-up rules have been established. An amply description of the sizing and scale-up models is presented together with modifications to improve the prototype behavior operated with fluids having different viscosities. Experimental results concerning the influence of viscosity of the continuous phase are presented and widely discussed taking the model as reference.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract In this work, the incremental step loading technique to measure hydrogen embrittlement threshold in steels from ASTM F1624 standard is applied to the Small Punch test technique. For the experimental program, a medium strength steel is employed, simulating the hydrogen embrittlement environment by a cathodic polarization of 5 mA/cm2 in an acid electrolyte mainly consisting of 1N H2SO4 in H2O. Regular standard tests on cylindrical tensile specimens were carried out under the same environment following the ASTM F1624 standard, observing the same trends in both cases, which validates the methodology proposed. In order to adapt the aforementioned standard to small punch testing, the duration of the loading steps had to be modified, proposing much shorter ones according to the Small Punch specimen dimensions and the punch rate taking place in these scenarios, which is pointed in bibliography. This proposal allows to obtain a threshold load by using at least 3 specimens in a total time of around a week.

Abstract:
The Covid-19 pandemic has moved scientists from different areas of knowledge worldwide to bring reflections on the impacts caused by it, whose scope goes beyond human health in its physical and psychological aspects and affects the economy, politics, social relations at work, the educational system, etc. Therefore, this project, promoted by the Laboratory for the Study of Stigmatization Processes (LEPE) in partnership with the Racism Studies Line (LER) of the Psychology Course of the Higher Education Institutes at CENSA -ISECENSA, aims to promote the debate on the psychosocial effects of remote education on black youth, through an intersectional analysis between Covid-19 pandemic, gender, race and class. The objective of this research is to understand the ways in which black youth was affected in the psychosocial dimension with the establishment of remote education in the public state network with the Covid-19 pandemic. This is an exploratory research, in which a bibliographic review will be carried out to support the researchers' views on the proposed theme, using books and scientific articles on social psychology, remote education in the Covid-19 pandemic, racism and intersectionality. Besides field research, using the semi-structured interview technique. We intend to conduct group interviews, through Google Meet, with black students graduating from Liceu de Humanidades de Campos high school and from other public schools.. We hope to foster the discussion on structural racism that affects the Brazilian society focusing on the psychosocial vulnerability of black youth in the face of remote education established by the Covid-19 pandemic, and, finally, to publish two scientific articles in “Revista Perspectivas Online” with the obtained results

Full text
Abstract:
The calculation of surface temperature on gas turbine blades in severe operating conditions requires a detailed knowledge of boundary layers behaviour. The prediction of laminar to turbulent transition as to existence and location, as well as the evaluation of heat transfer rates are major concerns. The program developed by SNECMA for this purpose is presented, in which models are introduced to take into account the main effects occuring on blades without film-cooling. The algorithm and discretisation scheme for boundary layer equations is Patankar and Spalding’s, with profiles initialization by Pohlhausen’s method. The turbulence and transition model, after Mc Donald and Fish, was improved in search for more stability and to have a better detection of the beginning of the transition. Adams and Johnston’s model for curvature, including propagation effects, was adapted to a transitional boundary layer. The validation tests of this program are described, which are based on numerous experimental data taken from a bibliography of tests over flat plates and blades. Other tests use heat transfer rate measurements conducted by SNECMA, together with VKI, on vanes and blades in non-rotating grids. The calculation results are further compared to the STAN5 program results; they show a superiority in predicting the transfer rates on a convex surface and for transitional boundary layers.

Full text
Abstract:
The complexity of chip formation in machining processes stems from the confluence of several physical phenomena — mechanical, thermal, and chemical — occurring at very high strain rate. The prediction of chip morphology depends on a fundamental understanding of these phenomena and is of industrial importance for cutting force prediction and surface integrity control. Our paper focuses on characterizing the chip morphology of serrated-chip (saw-tooth shape chip) and discusses the physical phenomena accompanying the serrated-chip formation according to finite element modeling (FEM) simulations. The paper presents a bibliographic review and an experimental study of chip formation. The experimental study, based on metallographic analysis of chip morphology and hardness measurements, focuses on machining of American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) 4340 steel alloy. Two finite element software packages were used to simulate chip formation under orthogonal cutting conditions. The FEM results are compared with the hardness measurements, and the chip morphology characterization method used to support the simulations is discussed.

Abstract:
Going up on the lookout. A laser scanner survey inside the Gallipoli castleGallipoli is a city located along the Ionian coast of Salento (Apulia, Italy) and it still preserves its original defensive system. Nowadays, the phases dating from the sixteenth century are visible together with the later ones and, in recent years, particular attention was dedicated to the Castle. It was opened for visitors from 2014, except to the so-called tower “Della Vedetta”, located on the northwestern quadrilateral’s corner. The only accessible areas of the castle’s lower level are two rooms with a connecting corridor, but the lower portion of the examined tower offers a rare proof of graffiti that has few local parallels. After a deep bibliographic and archivist research and the comparison with analogue works on similar well-studied contexts, we have carried out a direct analysis of this unknown portion through a 3D laser scanner. The scanner result proved to be an excellent tool to investigate the tower, whose articulation is made up of different rooms located on different levels connected by flights of stairs and where numerous mouths of fire are set. This 3D model allows to delineate the internal articulation, the constructive technique, the structural interventions and the whole corpus of graffiti too. The 3D survey helped to extrapolate considerable and various data. Moreover, it has suggested that a realization of a complete 3D model of the Castle can be a fruitful resource for its knowledge and it could represent a precious tool for an interactive enjoyment of the sectors still not open to visitors.

"Fault Diagnosis Technique for a Squirrel Cage Fan Using Vibration Analysis Signals." In ASME 2014 4th Joint US-European Fluids Engineering Division Summer Meeting collocated with the ASME 2014 12th International Conference on Nanochannels, Microchannels, and Minichannels. Abstract:
An experimental vibration study for a small centrifugal fan unit is presented in this work. The flow features in this kind of units are always of unsteady nature due to the geometrical constraints. As a consequence of such unsteady features, the vibrations and noise become often a serious design problem and may cause the unit bad functioning. With the use of fast response accelerometers, a fault diagnosis protocol is introduced in order to measure the extent of signal variations for different and expected failures. The study is based on the experimental measurements of two perpendicularly placed sensors which capture the acceleration signals for three different flow rates and three different operations, namely, the normal (or no failure) operation, the obstructed channel operation and the unbalance shaft operation. A squirrel cage or Sirocco fan is used for the study. It is a kind of centrifugal turbomachine with forward curved blades, often characterized by their small size. Its low cost and size make them be ideal for residential heating and cooling of vehicles. One of the important characteristics, the small chord of the rotor blades and the high number of them often used has been previously reported in the bibliography. Typically, most common damages or faults come from the moving blades, bearings, fixed blades, rotor and sealing. In general, the vibration signals indicate malfunction symptoms, one symptom may be due to two different faults, and the same fault can produce two different symptoms. The main goal of the study is the application of a fault diagnosis technique as the purified orbit diagram (POD) to reveal the limit range values for some standard failures. The finding of such limits is determinant to implement a fault diagnosis protocol that will decrease the maintenance costs and increase the operation efficiency of the unit. Such protocol would become straightforward from the presented data. The Purified Orbit Diagram is obtained by harmonic reconstructing corresponding harmonic components of two perpendicular directions in time domain. Three different flow rates, namely nominal and two off-design conditions are tested to be able to compare the different POD components as a function of the flow rate.

Abstract:
Knowledge combined with innovation has been shown to be a driving factor for the growth and development of sustainable economic markets and, given the reality of the current scenario in Brazil in relation to social, political and economic aspects, see the high rate of unemployment and informal workers that they need emergency governmental support to survive, the importance of cooperative union between academic centers, scientific society, government and private initiative to induce public and institutional policy strategies that cause scientific, technological and social advances, transforming the knowledge in market innovations that generate jobs and income for social actors. In this scenario, stricto sensu postgraduate courses, especially doctorates, have contributed to the advancement of Innovation, Science and Technology, considered to be driversof economic and social change. Thus, assuming that all theses created in university centers precede an intellectual innovation, this research aims to highlight the reasons that lead to low entrepreneurial applicability among doctoral and doctoral student research. The hypothesis raised is that the lack of disciplines interconnected to entrepreneurship in graduate studies creates an imprisonment of Brazilian scientists' ideas in the academic field without other ramifications. The methodological procedures used will be of a qualitative quantitative approach, with regard to the objectives, the research is presented as descriptive and exploratory, having as a procedure bibliographic studies and the creation and application of a questionnaire for doctors and doctoral students in the city of Campos dos Goytacazes-RJ. As a result of this research, I hoped to understand the reasons that lead to the low applicability and insertion of academic ideas in local entrepreneurship and the statistical survey of alternatives for interconnection between researchers and the market.
