Abstract:
AbstractIndia’s transformation of its food system from a highly deficient one in the mid-1960s to one that is self-reliant and marginally surplus now is a success story that holds lessons for many smallholder economies in Africa and south and south-east Asia. India has emerged as the largest producer of milk, spices, cotton and pulses; the second largest producer of wheat, rice, fruits and vegetables; the third largest producer of eggs; and the fifth largest producer of poultry meat. It is also the largest exporter of rice, spices and bovine meat. All of this became possible with an infusion of new technologies, innovative institutional engineering, and the right incentives. However, as India looks towards 2030 and beyond, its food system faces many challenges ranging from increasing pressure on natural resources (soils, water, air, forests) to climate change to fragmenting land holdings, increasing urbanisation, and high rates of malnutrition amongst children. To meet these challenges successfully, India needs a proper mix of policies- from the subsidy-driven to the investment-driven, from price policy to income policy, promoting agricultural diversification towards more nutritious food. It also needs to incentivise its private sector to build efficient and inclusive value chains, giving due importance to environmental sustainability. More innovative technologies, from green-to-gene, increasing digitalisation, the Internet of Things, and artificial intelligence, would be needed to ‘produce more from less’ with a goal of feeding the most populous nation on this planet by 2030 in a sustainable manner.

Abstract:
Organisms seem exquisitely adapted—like the peppered moths (Biston betularia), camouflaged to avoid predation (Figure 20.1). The story behind their cryptic coloration and pattern is easy to appreciate when looking at both black and mottled white moths set against contrasting backgrounds: one black, one mottled white, like the moths themselves. What half-witted bird would not prey on the obvious moth? This would clearly change the genetic make-up of a population. This popular pair of photos explains natural selection in an instant. The images are so widely reproduced, in biology textbooks and elsewhere, that everyone seems to know the case of the peppered moth. The case gained renown through Bernard Kettlewell. In the 1950s he investigated the survival rates of the moths in the contrasting forests of Birmingham and Dorset (ostensibly portrayed in Figure 20.1). But Kettlewell’s landmark publication, The Evolution of Melanism, also included another image (Figure 20.2). On the top right, it displays the two familiar forms of the moth: typica, the once-common “peppered” form (no. 2), and carbonaria, the nearly black form that proliferated later (no. 1). Arrayed on the left, however, are five other specimens of the same species, each exhibiting an intermediate darkness. Together, they constitute a third form, known as insularia. That is, a series of relatively unknown light and dark forms fills the gap between the two well-known extremes. Do the insularia moths matter? How might simplifying the wide range of forms to just two shape an image of natural selection? Or of nature, generally? In what ways does the difference between the simple story and a more complex reality ultimately affect our thinking? Perhaps we should challenge the implicit assumption (yet another sacred bovine) that nature, and science too, can effectively be reduced to black and white. One easily finds specimens of insularia in museum collections, Kettlewell noted. And he included them in his field studies. Having recruited observers from around Britain, Kettlewell catalogued the relative frequencies of all three forms in various locations. The incidence of insularia was sometimes 40% or more.

Abstract:
“Respect for life” is a rallying cry among many animal rights activists. They target the use of animals in research, the wearing of fur coats, the hunting of wolves and whales, and more. They deplore, too, dissection in biology classes (essay 26). Ironically, in many of these high-profile cases, “respect for life” seems to mean not a universal respect for all life, but rather a narrow “respect for life-like-us.” The values seem associated primarily with mammals. A little knowledge of biology might broaden the scope of such sentiments, with perhaps some stunning consequences. We observe life in many forms. From cuddly kittens to slithering snakes and spooky spiders. From huge, awesome blue whales to microscopic, one-celled organisms. From lilies to “sea lilies,” which are more closely related to starfish and sea urchins than to plants. And we are related to all of them. That is the startling lesson of evolution. We share ancestry with all these creatures. But how often is the grandeur in this view of life eclipsed by narrower feelings? For example, one hears much fuss over dissection in biology classes—of cats and frogs and fetal pigs. One hears very little objection to dissecting crickets, scallops, or worms. Why? While activists raid research laboratories where mammals are used, no wellspring of objection has emerged about a popular school lab exercise on the survival rates of sowbugs in different environmental conditions, although it assures wholesale death for some populations. Where is the hue and cry over bouquets of fresh-cut roses? Yet all are living. Animal rights advocates frequently express outrage at killing animals for fur. But rarely do we see outrage over leather jackets, which are basically just fur hides without the hair. Leather shoes, leather belts, leather hats, leather gloves, leather bags, leather wallets, leather briefcases, leather watch straps, leather key fobs, leather whatever: there are animal hides everywhere. Shouldn’t we be equally if not more outraged about the disparity of wealth between the persons who buy fur coats and the persons who, despite animal rights, want them but cannot afford them?

Abstract:
Bovine anaplasmosis is one of the most important tick borne diseases of ruminants worldwide causing significant economic losses in the livestock industries due to the high morbidity and mortality in susceptible cattle herds. Bovine anaplasmosis, caused by Anaplasma marginale, is an infectious but non-contagious disease. The mode of transmission of bovine anaplasmosis includes mechanical (blood contaminated fomites (needles, ear tagging, dehorning and castration equipment), biological (tick bites) and transplacental (mother to fetus). Bovine Anaplasmosis occurs in tropical and subtropical regions worldwide. Cattle of all ages are susceptible to infection with A. marginale, but the severity of disease increases with age. The common clinical sign of bovine anaplsmosis includes; fever, anorexia, rapid loss of body condition, severe decrease in milk production, pale and icteric mucous membranes, increased heart and respiratory rates, muscle weakness and depression. Diagnosis of bovine anaplasmosis can be made by demonstration of A. marginale on stained blood smears from clinically infected animals during the acute phase of the disease, but it is not reliable for detecting infection in pre-symptomatic or carrier animals. Instead, serological demonstration of antibodies and confirmation of antigen with molecular detection tools are used for diagnosis. Anaplasmosis can be treated by administration of oxytetracyclines, however oxytetracyclines do not clear the parasite from carrier animals. Control measures for bovine anaplasmosis vary with geographical location and include maintenance of Anaplasma free herds, vector control, administration of antibiotics and vaccination. Intensive acaridae application to control ticks has a number of limitations, therefore, immunization together with strategic tick control is recommended for exotic and crossbred cattle. Further studies on epidemiology of bovine anaplasmosis is needed

Abstract:
Cattle is a monotocous species that generally produce only one offspring per conception. However, multiple ovulations are a naturally emerging reproductive phenomenon typically controlled by genetic structure and environmental factors. On the other hand, few genes or causative mutations might explain significant genetic variations between animals for the reproductive traits. Studies report different methods, including QTL analysis, fine mapping, GWAS, and MAS selection, to improve such traits due to their economic importance. The recent fine-mapping study, which narrows the genomic region, indeed, influencing multiple ovulation, gives positive signals that causative mutation controlling high ovulation rate may be identified shortly. In conclusion, identifying the major genes that considerably affect ovulation and twinning rates provides the opportunity to increase reproduction efficiency by improving genetic gain in livestock species.

Abstract:
Tick-borne diseases (TBDs) cause major economic losses and affect many domestic animals, mainly cattle and sheep, in tropical and subtropical regions. Tropical theileriosis is a TBD caused by a protozoon called Theileria annulata transmitted by several tick species of the genus Hyalomma. Clinical manifestations of theileriosis are expressed mainly as anorexia, febrile generalized lymphadenitis and anemia followed by lethargy, lacrimation, nasal discharge and exopthalmia. Anemia is a feature point in tropical bovine theileriosis and severity was positively related to parasitaemia rates. Fatality due to infection is greatly dependent on the overproduction of cytokines, such as TNF-α produced by the schizont-infected monocytes/macrophages and uninfected macrophages. Buparvaquone gave 86.66% clinical efficacy against Theileria annulata, but 97.1% and 95.2% efficacy against Theileria parva. In Theileriosis, hemolysis occurs due to isoantibody to RBC. To prevent this isoantibody lysis, immunosuppressive dose of steroid such as Dexamethasone@2.2 mg/kg.b.wt could be used.

Abstract:
The flotation of Genentech on the US stock market in 1980 turned its founders Bob Swanson and Herb Boyer into multimillionaires. Although human insulin caused great excitement for traders on Wall Street, however, the medical community was sober. Some clinicians felt that it offered no real clinical benefit over existing porcine and bovine insulins with which patients had treated their diabetes since the 1920s. What was the point of the frantic race between rival researchers to be the first to produce human insulin? This chapter explores this, and some of the wider social and political questions, raised by new medical technologies like human insulin and its subsequent analogues. Moreover, as we face a world shaped by the current Covid-19 pandemic, the chapter argues that the story of insulin has lessons for us all, whether or not we have diabetes.

Abstract:
Recent outbreaks of Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE), foot-and-mouth disease, and bird flu have heightened awareness of traceability and information flows in agricultural industries. Existing supply chain research has focused on supply chains for manufactured goods, but the agricultural industry differs from manufacturing, being characterized by horizontal alliances and imprecise output predictions arising from uncontrollable factors such as weather and rates of natural increase. This chapter explores the downstream information flows in a sheep meat supply chain. It identifies stakeholders and the nature and efficiency of their information exchanges. Findings show that important information is generated in several tiers along the supply chain, but this information is not always shared and opportunities for increased supply chain competitiveness are lost. The lack of information sharing is explained by the unwillingness of partners to commit to tight contractual agreements, the lack of adequate technological infrastructure, and the absence of regulations mandating certain information flows.

Rahim Ahmadi, Mohammad. "Subclinical Endometritis in Dairy Cattle." In Veterinary Medicine and Science. IntechOpen, 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.5772/intechopen.112030.

Full text
Abstract:
Subclinical Endometritis (SCE) is a postpartum uterine disease that is characterized by inflammation of the uterus without any apparent clinical signs. This condition, despite lacking overt symptoms, has a significant impact on reproductive performance by decreasing pregnancy rates following the first insemination and prolonging the median days open. Risk factors for metritis include the metabolic status of the cow during the prepartum period and issues occurring at or after parturition, such as dystocia (difficult calving) and retained placenta. Elevated concentrations of haptoglobin during the postpartum period have been associated with metritis, cytological endometritis, and purulent vaginal discharge. Subclinical endometritis is a major contributor to the repeat breeder syndrome of bovine subfertility. Treatment of endometritis can cause the production of biofilm in the uterus. Biofilms inherently possess resistance to antibiotics as well as to cellular and humoral immune defenses. Treatment of subclinical endometritis is usually performed as clinical endometritis. Antibiotic infusion is a routine treatment method in dairy farms. But the use of alternative treatments such as hypertonic dextrose and hyperimmune serum mayhelp to improve treatment results. Management of pre- and postpartum periods of dairy cows is the best method for the control of subclinical endometritis.

Abstract:
The slow rates of peptide bond isomerization in imino acids and the substantial population of the cis peptide bond isomer in Xaa-Pro linkages in peptides were first recognized in NMR studies of proline-containing model compounds (Maia et al., 1971). The important role of this isomerization in protein stability and folding (reviewed by Kim and Baldwin, 1982, 1990; Schmid, 1993) were recognized several years later (Brandts et al., 1975) and the biological relevance of this process was substantiated by the discovery of a ubiquitous enzyme that catalyzes Xaa-Pro peptide bond isomerization (Fischer et al., 1984, 1989; Takahashi et al., 1989). The strict evolutionary conservation of some prolyl residues and the observation that the kinetics of interconversion between alternative functional forms of some systems is consistent with the time scale of proline isomerization suggest that proline isomerization may play a wide role in protein structure and function. Suggestive examples include the sodium pump of Escherichia coli, the disulfide isomerase/thioredoxin class of enzymes, concanavalin A, and bovine prothrornbin fragment I (Brown et al., 1977; Marsh et al, 1979; Dunker, 1982; Brandland Deber, 1986; Langsetmo et al, 1989). NMR spectroscopy is one of the most suitable tools for studying this isomerization reaction. The rates generally are slow on the time scale of NMR chemical shifts but, in favorable cases, are comparable to longitudinal relaxation rates so that the isomerization process can be investigated by chemical exchange spectroscopy. NMR data obtained on calbindin D9k (Chazin et al., 1989), insulin (Higgins et al., 1988), and staphylococcal nuclease (nuclease) as discussed below have shown that each exists in solution under native conditions as a mixture of slowly exchanging conformers. The fact that dynamic molecular heterogeneity in nuclease was first observed in the laboratory of Oleg Jardetzky, as manifested by splitting of the histidyl 1H ε1 resonance from His46 in one-dimensional 1H NMR spectra recorded at 100 MHz (Markley et al., 1970), makes this topic particularly appropriate to a volume celebrating his scientific contributions.

Abstract:
Bovine brain tissue has been tested in shear under oscillatory, relaxation and constant strain rate test protocols. Compression data has been obtained in confined compression. The data from these tests suggests that brain tissue is a highly nonlinear viscoelastic material, with a linear viscoelastic limit of approximately 0.1% strain. The storage and loss modulus are strain dependent above this loading level, requiring careful interpretation of oscillatory data. Brain tissue is also highly strain rate dependent, not strain-time separable, and exhibits a low long term elastic modulus. Modelling
