Payne, Rachel Page. "Baumrind's Authoritative Parenting Style: A Model for Creating Autonomous Writers." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2013. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/3518.

Full text
Abstract:
Though Quintilian introduced the term in loco parentis in his Institutio Oratoria by suggesting that teachers think of themselves as parents of a student's mind, composition scholars have let parenting as a metaphor for teaching fall by the wayside in recent discussions of classroom authority. Podis and Podis have recently revived the term, though, and investigated the ways writing teachers enact Lakoff's "Strict Father" and "Nurturing Mother" authority models. Unfortunately, their treatment of these two opposite authority styles reduces classroom authority styles to a mutually exclusive binary of two less than satisfactory options. I propose clinical and developmental psychologist Diana Baumrind's taxonomy of parenting styles as the ideal way to reform our thinking as a field about the authority model we should adopt in our writing classrooms. While Baumrind includes the inferior models Podis and Podis work from in her authoritarian and permissive parenting styles, she found that the authoritative style, which is both strict and nurturing, promises the best results for parenting children: autonomy and academic achievement. By applying her descriptions of authoritative parents and the outcomes for their children to the practices of composition instructors and their students, I reveal how useful Baumrind's taxonomy of parenting styles could be for a field that often uses nuanced terms for authority without either clearly defining them or backing claims with replicable, aggregable, data-driven (RAD) research. If our field chooses to adopt Baumrind's terminology and definitions, then, we will be able to communicate about classroom authority in terms anchored in a coherent paradigm and garner more respect for our field as we probe the outcomes of Baumrind's authoritative parenting style as a college composition teaching style through our own empirical research.

Abstract:

Scoble, Rosa. "Funding of research in higher education : a panoptic view of the RAE." Thesis, Brunel University, 2003. http://bura.brunel.ac.uk/handle/2438/498.

Full text
Abstract:
The thesis investigates the effects that the Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) has on the Higher Education sector. The alternative view presented by the thesis is that more knowledge can be created by concentrating on the different constituents of the RAE and their specific interactions with particular areas of the Higher Education sector. The RAE constituents are interpreted as drivers that influence and impact, in dissimilar fashions, on different activities of Higher Education Institutions (HEI). This micro analysis of the RAE enables the investigation to isolate the single effects of the RAE drivers therefore creating a bottom-up analysis of the overall impact of the RAE. The analysis of the impact that the drivers have on HEIs’ activities focuses on the perception that individuals within the system have of the consequences of the RAE. The focus on perceptions derives from personal observation of the lack of consensus on the consequences that different drivers have on different areas. The use of perceptions as the mean to assess the impact of the RAE enables the investigation to create a picture of the consequences of the RAE that addresses behavioural change. A multi-dimensional crystal view approach is used to accommodate both the micro analysis and the perception assessment. The multi-dimensional crystal view, a research contribution in its own right, is based on the principle that a micro analysis of a complex system can be achieved by decomposing the system into a number of dimensions. Insight is draw when the interactions between some of the dimensions are investigated. In the specific case of the RAE the dimension are: the RAE drivers, HEIs’ activities and points of observation (dimension that captures perceptions). Knowledge and insight can be acquired when the interactions between the dimensions are aggregated at successive higher levels. The supporting tool for the multidimensional crystal view approach is a matrix that facilitates the analytical process. The aggregation of the dimensions comes from combining textual statements from the points of observation (perceptions) on the effects that the drivers of the RAE have on the activities of HEIs. The highest level is a textual statement that synthesises all lower level statements.

Regol, Anna. "Le Rap, un langage à la marge ?" Thesis, Aix-Marseille, 2015. http://www.theses.fr/2015AIXM3045.

Full text
Abstract:
Conduct clinical research in psychiatry focuses on unconscious mental processes involved in the subject of the unconscious in the creation of rap. The psychoanalytic epistemology is based on Freudian and Lacanian concepts. A linguistic and sociological approach to define rap as a language and an esthetic phenomenon. The issue focuses on the involvement of the process of displacement, condensation, substitution and association representative’s representations and identification and narcissistic in question for the individual subject and collective training process. The main hypothesis is that the inventiveness of language on the margins of academic language supports the subject. The secondary hypothesis attached to the first is that it allows a form of social relationship. The methodology is based on two axes, the first concerns the qualitative discourse analysis of a corpus of texts known rappers from Tropes tool of linguistic analysis, semantic and syntactic, and analysis of observations and excerpts from interviews logbook of the proposed patient sector workshop report. The second axis concerns the psychopathological interpretation of the results for each author of the corpus and the presentation of clinical vignettes for rappers workshop. The comparative study of the results allows the discussion and testing of hypotheses

Abstract:
This study consists of the development of a ram pump, which will allow the pumping of water without the need of external energy sources. It is considered an analysis of interest since, once it is finished; it can be applied in reality improving and facilitating different activities related to agriculture and health. Previous studies have been made related to the ram pump; however, in this case, it is intended to understand the system that has been built in the laboratory in order to find the best combination of parameters that will lead to obtain the highest possible efficiency.  The study will be carried out by studying scientific literature and by experimenting in the laboratory. Encompassing the experimental and literary field, it is expected to understand perfectly the advantages and disadvantages of the ram pump in order to determine if it is worth it to install in certain places. After the study, the most favourable parameters for the operation of the Bruzaholms Bruk pump have been obtained. It has been found that the use of a longer drive pipe favours the operation of the system, as it is possible to obtain a higher efficiency, although it must be taken into account that the mentioned length needs to be controlled, as it could reduce the working rhythm of the pump. It has also been seen that the pump gives better results if the impulse valve is completely opened. Finally, it has been proven that, as long as the height difference between the two tanks is enough, increasing the height of the water source will favour the operation of the system.

Hoffman, Melissa. "Quantitative Proteomics to Support Translational Cancer Research." Scholar Commons, 2018. https://scholarcommons.usf.edu/etd/7303.

Full text
Abstract:
Altered signaling pathways, which are mediated by post-translational modifications and changes in protein expression levels, are key regulators of cancer initiation, progression, and therapeutic escape. Many aspects of cancer progression, including early carcinogenesis and immediate response to drug treatment, are beyond the scope of genetic profiling and non-invasive monitoring techniques. Global protein profiling of cancer cell line models, tumor tissues, and biofluids (e.g. serum or urine) using mass spectrometry-based proteomics produces novel biological insights, which support improved patient outcomes. Recent technological advances resulting in next-generation mass spectrometry instrumentation and improved bioinformatics workflows have led to unprecedented measurement reproducibility as well as increased depth and coverage of the human proteome. It is now possible to interrogate the cancer proteome with quantitative proteomics to identify prognostic cancer biomarkers, stratify patients for treatment, identify new therapeutic targets, and elucidate drug resistance mechanisms. There are, however, numerous challenges associated with protein measurements. Biological samples have a high level of complexity and wide dynamic range, which is even more pronounced in samples used for non-invasive disease monitoring, such as serum. Cancer biomarkers are generally found in low abundance compared to other serum proteins, particularly at early stages of disease where cancer detection would make the biggest impact on improving patient survival. Additionally, the large-scale datasets generally require bioinformatics expertise to produce useful biological insights. These difficulties converge to create obstacles for down-stream clinical translation. This dissertation research demonstrates how proteomics is applied to develop new resources and generate novel workflows to improve protein quantification in complex biosamples, which could improve translation of cancer research to benefit patient care. The studies described in this dissertation move from assessment of quantitative mass spectrometry platforms, to analytical assay development and validation, and ending with personalized biomarker development applied to patient samples. As an example, four different quantitative mass spectrometry acquisition platforms are explored and comparisons of their ability to quantify low abundance peptides in a complex background are explored. Lung cancers frequently have aberrant signaling resulting in increased kinase activity and targetable signaling hubs; kinase inhibitors have been successfully developed and implemented clinically. Therefore, changes in amounts of kinase peptides in the complex background of peptides from all ATP-utilizing enzymes in a lung cancer cell line model after kinase inhibitor treatment was selected as a model system. Traditional mass spectrometry platforms, data dependent acquisition and multiple reaction monitoring, are compared to the two newer methods, data independent acquisition and parallel reaction monitoring. Relative quantification is performed across the four methods and analytical performance as well as downstream applications, including drug target identification and elucidation of signaling changes. Liquid chromatography – multiple reaction monitoring (LC-MRM) was selected for development of multiplexed quantitative assays based on superior sensitivity and fast analysis times, allowing for larger peptide panels. Method comparison results also provide guidelines for quantitative proteomics platform selection for translational cancer researchers. Next, a multiplexed quantitative LC-MRM assay targeting a panel of 30 RAS signaling proteins was developed and described. Over 30% of all human cancers have a RAS mutation and these cancers are generally aggressive and limited treatment options, leading to poor patient prognosis. Many targeted inhibitors have successfully shut down RAS signaling, leading to tumor regression, however, acquired drug resistance is common. The multiplexed LC-MRM assays characterized and validated are a publically available resource for cancer researchers to interrogate the RAS signal transduction network. Feasibility has been demonstrated in cell line models in order to identify signaling changes that confer BRAF inhibitor resistance and biomarkers of sensitivity to treatment. This analytical LC-MRM panel could support meaningful development of new therapeutic options and identification of companion biomarkers, with the end goal of improving patient outcomes. Multiplexed LC-MRM assays developed for personalized disease biomarkers using an integrated multi-omics approach are described for Multiple Myeloma, an incurable malignancy with poor patient outcomes. This disease is characterized by clonal expansion of the plasma cells in the bone marrow, which secrete a monoclonal immunoglobulin, or M-protein. Clinical treatment decisions are based on multiple semi-quantitative assays that require manual evaluation. In the clinic, minimal residual disease quantification methods, including multi-parameter flow cytometry and immunohistochemistry, are applied to bone marrow aspirates, which is a highly invasive technique that does not provide a systemic evaluation of the disease. To address these issues, we hypothesized that unique variable region peptides could be identified and LC-MRM assays developed specific to each patient’s M-protein to improve specificity and sensitivity in non-invasive disease monitoring. A proteogenomics approach was used to design personalized assays for each patient to monitor their disease progression, which demonstrate improved specificity and up to a 500-fold increase in sensitivity compared to current clinical methods. Assays can be developed from marrow aspirates collected when the patient was at residual disease stage, which is useful if no sample with high disease burden is available. The patient-specific tests are also multiplexed with constant region peptide assays that monitor all immunoglobulin heavy and light chain classes, which could reduce analysis to a single test. In conclusion, highly sensitive patient-specific assays have been developed that could change the paradigm for patient evaluation and clinical decision-making, increasing the ability of clinicians to continue first line therapy in the hopes of achieving a cure, or to intervene at an earlier time point in disease recurrence. This study also provides a blueprint for future development of personalized diagnostics, which could be applied to biomarkers of other cancer types. Overall, these studies demonstrate how quantitative proteomics can be used to support translational cancer research, from the impact of different mass spectrometry platforms on elucidating signaling changes and drug targets to the characterization of multiplexed LC-MRM assays applied to cell line models for translational research purposes and in patient serum samples optimized for clinical translation. We believe that mass spectrometry-based proteomics is poised to play a pivotal role in personalized diagnostics to support implementation of precision medicine, an effort that will improve the quality and efficiency of patient care.

This thesis is a three-part study in which I sought to contribute to a more indepth understanding of the teaching-only academic role. I did this through an investigation of the career trajectories, perceptions, work-related experiences and academic identity constructions of teaching-only academics working in a research-intensive institution in the UK. In the first part of the study I carried out a systematic review of the literature on teaching-only academics in the UK, Australia and Canada. In the second part of the study I investigated the virtual identity of teaching-only academics at the UK research-intensive institution. I did this by undertaking an analysis of how these teaching-only academics self-represented and projected themselves on their institutional webpages. In the third part of the study I carried out a life-history analysis of senior teaching-only academics in the engineering faculty of the case study institution. A principal finding from this thesis, which is collaborated across all the three parts of the study, is that the teaching-only academic role is a non-homogeneous role comprising individuals who come from different backgrounds, have followed different career trajectories into the role, and have different academic identities. Findings from this thesis also suggest that whilst teaching-only academics were introduced as an institutional response to the demands of the RAE/REF, the very act of creating the role has further exacerbated the separation between research and teaching, and between undergraduate and postgraduate teaching. Specifically, undergraduate teaching within the case study engineering department now tends to be the responsibility of teaching-only academics, with research-and-teaching academics increasingly focussing on research and postgraduate teaching. This separation has implications for research-led teaching, particularly in research-intensive institutions. The thesis also reveals that despite the pre-eminence of research, teaching remains important within the university, and individuals on the teaching-only academic role are able to accumulate substantial, and valued, teaching-related academic capital. This capital, in turn, is enabling them to secure and advance their positions within the same institution, and to pursue career advancement through seeking employment in other higher education institutions.

Abstract:
This thesis analyses secondary data from the 2001 RAE, specifically journal submission data, for ten selected Units of Assessment (UoA). This data was viewed as a 'population' or sample, not for the purpose of making generalisations but for a demographic study of the size, structure and pattern of submitted titles, in order to ascertain how closely, or even whether, they 'fitted' within the subject area of the UoAs. Three perspectives were developed and used; research assessment via published output (policy perspective); scholarly communication (communication perspective); and disciplinary and subject boundary perspective (the academic perspective). A literature review of these three areas is provided.

Abstract:
The present thesis explores how masculinity is constructed and negotiated in relation to race, class and sexuality in hip hop in Sweden. Theoretically, the study contributes to the increasing use of contemporary feminist theory in men and masculinity research. In so doing, it brings into dialogue poststructuralist feminism, feminist phenomenology, intersectionality and queer theory. These theoretical perspectives are put to use in a discourse analysis of rap lyrics by 38 rap artists in Sweden from the period 1991-2011. The thesis is based on the following four articles: Sticky masculinity: Post-structuralism, phenomenology and subjectivity in critical studies on men explores how poststructuralist feminism and feminist phenomenology can advance the understanding of subjectivity within men and masculinity research. Drawing on Sara Ahmed, and offering re-readings of John Stoltenberg and Victor Seidler, the article develops the notion of “sticky masculinity”. Degrees of intersectionality: Male rap artists in Sweden negotiating class, race and gender analyzes how class, race, gender, and to some extent sexuality, intersect in rap lyrics by male artists. It shows how critiques of class and race inequalities in these lyrics intersect with normative notions of gender and sexuality. Drawing on this empirical analysis, the article suggests that the notion of “degrees of intersectionality” can be helpful in thinking about masculinity from an intersectional perspective. ‘No homo’: Straight inoculations and the queering of masculinity in Swedish hip hop explores the boundary work performed by male artists regarding sexuality categories. In particular, it analyzes how heterosexuality is sustained, given the affection expressed among male peers. To this end, the article develops the notion of “straight inoculations” to account for the rhetorical means by which heterosexual identities are sustained in a contested terrain. Hip hop feminism in Sweden: Intersectionality, feminist critique and female masculinity investigates lyrics by female artists in the male-dominated hip hop genre. The analysis shows how critique of gender inequality is a central theme in these lyrics, ranging from the hip hop scene to politics and men’s violence against women. The article also analyzes how female rappers both critique and perform masculinity.

Abstract:
According to the data affinity, DAFA re-organizes data to maximize the parallelism of the affinitive data, and also subjective to the overall load balance. This enables DAFA to realize the maximum number of map tasks with data-locality. Besides the system performance, power consumption is another important concern of current computer systems. In the U.S. alone, the energy used by servers which could be saved comes to 3.17 million tons of carbon dioxide, or 580,678 cars {Kar09}. However, the goals of high performance and low energy consumption are at odds with each other. An ideal power management strategy should be able to dynamically respond to the change (either linear or nonlinear, or non-model) of workloads and system configuration without violating the performance requirement. We propose a novel power management scheme called MAR (modeless, adaptive, rule-based) in multiprocessor systems to minimize the CPU power consumption under performance constraints. By using richer feedback factors, e.g. the I/O wait, MAR is able to accurately describe the relationships among core frequencies, performance and power consumption. We adopt a modeless control model to reduce the complexity of system modeling. MAR is designed for CMP (Chip Multi Processor) systems by employing multi-input/multi-output (MIMO) theory and per-core level DVFS (Dynamic Voltage and Frequency Scaling).; TRAID deduplicates this overlap by only logging one compact version (XOR results) of recovery references for the updating data. It minimizes the amount of log content as well as the log flushing overhead, thereby boosts the overall transaction processing performance. At the same time, TRAID guarantees comparable RAID reliability, the same recovery correctness and ACID semantics of traditional transactional processing systems. On the other hand, the emerging myriad data intensive applications place a demand for high-performance computing resources with massive storage. Academia and industry pioneers have been developing big data parallel computing frameworks and large-scale distributed file systems (DFS) widely used to facilitate the high-performance runs of data-intensive applications, such as bio-informatics {Sch09}, astronomy {RSG10}, and high-energy physics {LGC06}. Our recent work {SMW10} reported that data distribution in DFS can significantly affect the efficiency of data processing and hence the overall application performance. This is especially true for those with sophisticated access patterns. For example, Yahoo's Hadoop {refg} clusters employs a random data placement strategy for load balance and simplicity {reff}. This allows the MapReduce {DG08} programs to access all the data (without or not distinguishing interest locality) at full parallelism. Our work focuses on Hadoop systems. We observed that the data distribution is one of the most important factors that affect the parallel programming performance. However, the default Hadoop adopts random data distribution strategy, which does not consider the data semantics, specifically, data affinity. We propose a Data-Affinity-Aware (DAFA) data placement scheme to address the above problem. DAFA builds a history data access graph to exploit the data affinity.; The evolution of computer science and engineering is always motivated by the requirements for better performance, power efficiency, security, user interface (UI), etc {CM02}. The first two factors are potential tradeoffs: better performance usually requires better hardware, e.g., the CPUs with larger number of transistors, the disks with higher rotation speed; however, the increasing number of transistors on the single die or chip reveals super-linear growth in CPU power consumption {FAA08a}, and the change in disk rotation speed has a quadratic effect on disk power consumption {GSK03}. We propose three new systematic approaches as shown in Figure 1.1, Transactional RAID, data-affinity-aware data placement DAFA and Modeless power management, to tackle the performance problem in Database systems, large scale clusters or cloud platforms, and the power management problem in Chip Multi Processors, respectively. The first design, Transactional RAID (TRAID), is motivated by the fact that in recent years, more storage system applications have employed transaction processing techniques Figure 1.1 Research Work Overview] to ensure data integrity and consistency. In transaction processing systems(TPS), log is a kind of redundancy to ensure transaction ACID (atomicity, consistency, isolation, durability) properties and data recoverability. Furthermore, high reliable storage systems, such as redundant array of inexpensive disks (RAID), are widely used as the underlying storage system for Databases to guarantee system reliability and availability with high I/O performance. However, the Databases and storage systems tend to implement their independent fault tolerant mechanisms {GR93, Tho05} from their own perspectives and thereby leading to potential high overhead. We observe the overlapped redundancies between the TPS and RAID systems, and propose a novel reliable storage architecture called Transactional RAID (TRAID).

Abstract:
Generic Ericsson Processor boards are general purpose hardware platforms which provide generic processing services. They support the Unified Extensible Firmware Interface Specification. They have several network interfaces available and they are connected to Ericsson’s laboratory network. Several servers are also connected to this network. These boards require periodic firmware upgrades. They also require acquiring new firmware components and data files. Currently, an application to download or upload files from and to Ericsson’s laboratory servers when an Operating System has not already been booted does not exist. Therefore, the files have to be transferred to USB drives which are connected later to the boards in order to transfer the files. This is a time consuming operation which decreases Ericsson’s productivity. In addition, although Generic Ericsson Processor boards have an optional solid-state drive as secondary storage, Ericsson wants to be able to operate without it. This is because this secondary storage is not always available and Ericsson does not want to use it when the Generic Ericsson Processor boards are operating before an Operating System has been loaded. They prefer to use Random Access Memory storage. This project is focused on studying possible solutions for those two problems. Several file transfer protocols are analyzed. Several file system solutions mounted on Random Access Memory are also explored. A Trivial File Transfer Protocol client application and a Random Access Memory Disk driver prototype are designed, implemented and tested. They are tailored to work on a pre-boot environment, when the boards have not booted an Operating System yet, in Ericsson’s laboratory network. Finally, a secure file transfer protocols’ study is developed. This study will be used to assess Ericsson on the optimal secure file transfer protocol choice in order to implement possible secure future versions of the system.

Full text
Abstract:
The questions outlined in this thesis dissertation were proposed in order to provide insight regarding the mechanism by which the Drosophila Son of sevenless (dSOS) protein activates Ras. Ras proteins are GTP-binding proteins which bind guanine nucleotides very tightly and cycle between the inactive GDP-bound state and the active GTP-bound state. To address the mechanism by which the dSOS proteins activates Ras, a structure-function analysis of the dSOS protein was performed using truncation and deletion mutants of dSOS. In vivo Ras activation experiments using transiently transfected cells revealed that the NH2-terminal domain of dSOS is required in order for the catalytic domain of dSOS to exhibit exchange activity in cultured mammalian cells. The COOH-terminal GRB2 (Growth Factor Receptor Binding Protein) binding domain on the otherhand was insufficient to confer Ras exchange activity to the dSOS catalytic domain. Further analysis of the NH2-terminal domain of the dSOS protein demonstrated that the function of promoting catalytic domain activity could be localized by mutational analysis to the pleckstrin (PH) and DBL (Diffuse B-cell Lymphoma) homology sequences. Fractionation studies of cells transiently transfected with various dSOS mutant proteins demonstrated that the NH2-terminus of dSOS is also necessary for membrane association. These findings suggested that the model proposing that the recruitment of SOS via the adaptor protein GRB2 to the membrane is the main mechanism by which SOS activates Ras is unlikely to be the only mechanism by which SOS can activate Ras. From our data, a model can be proposed which postulates that SOS can activate Ras as a consequence of at least two steps. One step involves the SOS/GRB2 interaction and the second step involves the NH2-terminal domain of SOS associating with unidentified cellular elements.

Abstract:
Metastasis is characterized pathologically by uncontrolled cell invasion, proliferation, migration and angiogenesis. Steroid hormones, such as estrogen, and growth factors, which include insulin growth factor I/II (IGF-1/IGF-2) therapy has been associated with most if not all of the features of metastasis. It has been determined that IGF-1 increases cell survival of cancer cells and potentiate the effect of E2 and other ligand growth factors on breast cancer cells. However not much information is available that comprehensively expounds on the roles of insulin growth factor receptor (IGFR) and Rab GTPases may play in breast cancer. The latter, Rab GTPases, are small signaling molecules and critical in the regulation of many cellular processes including cell migration, growth via the endocytic pathway. This research involves the role of Rab GTPases, specifically Rab5 and its guanine exchange factors (GEFs), in the promotion of cancer cell migration and invasion. Two important questions abound: Are IGFR stimulation and downstream effect involved the endocytic pathway in carcinogenesis? What role does Rab5 play in cell migration and invasion of cancer cells? The hypothesis is that growth factor signaling is dependent on Rab5 activity in mediating the aggressiveness of cancer cells. The goal is to demonstrate that IGF-1 signaling is dependent on Rab5 function in breast cancer progression. Here, the results thus far, have shown that while activation of Rab5 may mediate increased cell proliferation, migration and invasion in breast cancer cells, the Rab5 GEF, RIN1 interacts with the IGFR thereby facilitating migration and invasion activities in breast cells. Furthermore, endocytosis of the IGFR in breast cancer cells seems to be caveolin dependent as the data has shown. This taken together, the data shows that IGF-1 signaling in breast cancer cells relies on IGF-1R phosphorylation, caveolae internalization and sequestration to the early endosome RIN1 function and Rab5 activation.

Abstract:
When crises develop, people are confronted with difficulties beyond those experienced in normal everyday activities.  Due to the perceived threats inherent to such situations, familiar behaviors may prove ineffective, and such attempts can pose dangerous and unpredictable risks. Crises are extreme situations, occurring at the very edges of human experience. Oral communication in such situations cannot be casual; the seriousness of the situation demands exceptional communicative performance on the part of the participants. Therefore, certainties about everyday communication conventions are called into question. The following work examines conversations during which the participants were involved in an extreme situation. In this particular crisis, a politically motivated kidnapping, the personal involvement of the interlocutors is substantial. A clear and present fear of the situation escalating and the possibility of a failure to anticipate the resulting reactions from the other party(ies) characterize the communicative acts of those involved. Recorded telephone calls during the occupation of the West German Embassy in Stockholm by members of the Red Army Faction (RAF) on April 24, 1975 comprise the basis for this analysis. One of the occupiers speaks with various interlocutors located in an adjacent embassy building. These interlocutors are relatives of the hostages, the Swedish Minister of Justice, and a German official charged with leading the negotiations. In this study, the communicative processes of the crisis are reconstructed. In order to show how the interlocutors attempt to reach their goals in this tense situation with the resources available to them, as well as what they in fact achieve, ethnographic methods of analysis have been employed. This study shows how, despite strong conflicting interests and motives, a shared reality is built through the actions of the interlocutors. The interaction between two key figures in the early stages of the crisis can even be characterized as a form of coalition building. An explanation as to why this collaboration is not retained in the subsequent course of the events, however, leading to an escalation of the situation, is also presented. Furthermore, the following work sets forth qualities needed to interactively build a coalition in a precarious crisis situation, which has arisen between parties characterized by diametrically opposed aims.

Abstract:
With current treatments for Alzheimer’s disease (AD) only providing temporary symptomatic benefits and an ageing population, disease modifying drugs are urgently required. This approach relies on improved understanding of the early pathophysiology of AD. Ongoing research suggests that soluble amyloid-β oligomers (Aβo) and inflammatory processes are among the early factors that contribute to the pathogenesis and progression of AD, by initially triggering synaptic deficits and subsequent cognitive impairment. The aim was to investigate cognitive and synaptic function, as well as neuroinflammatory markers, following an acute intracerebroventricular (ICV) injection of stabilised low-n Aβo in the rat. This thesis first investigates the different existing rat models of Aβ-peptide administration to better understand the mechanisms involved, neuropathological changes observed and cognitive deficits assessed. From this review, I determined the cognitive and neuropathological markers that would be investigated in the current model. After presenting all the methods used, the following results chapter studied the reproducibility and duration of the cognitive deficits, the effect of different doses of oligomers and sex differences. An early (4 days after surgery) and lasting (up to 70 days after surgery) memory deficit in the novel object recognition (NOR) task has been found. This deficit was triggered by doses of acutely administrated Aβo ranging from 0.5 to 5nmol, and equally affected female and male rats. Investigated neuropathological markers showed a synaptic deficit, raised neuroinflammatory cytokines levels and decreased density of parvalbumin-positive cells in the frontal cortex, but not the hippocampus. The NOR deficit could be rescued by treatment with the phosphodiesterase-4 inhibitor rolipram, an effect that stopped after cessation of the treatment. Treatment with the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug mefenamic acid prevented the NOR deficit and had an added protective effect up to 21 days after cessation of the treatment. Taken together, these results suggest that acute ICV administration of Aβo may be a useful model to study the early mechanisms involved in AD and may provide researchers with a platform for testing novel therapeutic approaches targeting the mechanisms that contribute to AD, and particularly the early neuroinflammatory phenomenon.

The framework consists of Altbach's four factors - democratization, the knowledge economy, globalisation and competition and three ideal types for university development - entrepreneurial, liberal education and deliberative. The thesis contrasts classical college with the modern university system. The results show strong evidence for research domination, mission drift and shift towards the entrepreneurial model. Quality is compromised by lowering requirements, compressed courses, less study time, large classes taught by sessionals and TAs, grade inflation and consumerist behaviour, while critical thinking and moral development are neglected.

Abstract:
The perspective of this dissertation is to analyze how the teaching and learning processes are interacting in a multipolar environment [tutor, online help, learning strategies] in order to shed light on the conditions to which a numerical environment is liable to promote English as a foreign language and culture [hereinafter L-C 2] acquisition amongst ESP learners at university level. The first part of the dissertation deals with the learner. If the implementation of a pedagogical environment aims at providing him - her with tools enabling both a potential qualitative and quantitative progression in L-C 2, the learner indeed plays a central role within it, as a user. In order to achieve this objective, a reflection on the L-C 2 learning processes is necessary to take them into account, as far as possible, in the setting up of a pedagogical environment. The second part looks at how the considerations of SLA, second language learning and teaching and the pedagogical implications drawn from the first part can be linked up and turned into tailor-made tools liable to impact positively on the learners’ SLA processes. The third part is about pedagogical engineering with a particular emphasis on how both the pedagogical implications drawn from the first two parts and the various parameters inherent to a pedagogical setting can be taken into account to implement an L-C 2 blended learning environment. Eventually, action research is presented. This part aims at providing an analysis of the learning practices and of the multipolar interaction taking place within a blended environment and at assessing its potential in terms of SLA

This research aims to explore young children’s learning process in a ballet class that incorporates games and fairy tales. The ballet curriculum of the Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) is a highly structured and strict training system. However, children love to play and enjoy stories by nature. Asking children to imitate the ballet movement of a teacher often generates issues such as the lack of interest in their dance learning process. To enhance children’s motivation and learning experience of ballet, this research intends to integrate games and fairy tales into RAD Primary ballet curriculum. The research method employed in this study is action research, within which the researcher herself was at the same time the teacher (researcher as participant). The ballet curriculum that was studied progressed for nine weeks. A session of sixty minutes was conducted in each week. Video records were kept as research data along with the teacher’s reflective journal, students’ learning sheets, and the collaborative teacher’s observation notes. The research findings were: 1.The atmosphere of fairy tales and games could transform the repetitive training of ballet skills into interesting games, and the appropriate use of teaching aids could enhance children’s sense of reality in games and fairy tales, both of which made students engaged in repeated practice. 2.Through the guidance of the game rules as well as specific images embedded in fairy tales, students could maintain a very high concentration, figuring out the texture of ballet movements in details, and self-demand correct performance of the action. 3.In the process of leading image-games, the teacher developed a common language with students, which made the teachers and students become closer, and enhanced professional competence in terms of game design, the use of teaching aids, teaching strategies, crisis management, etc.

To make the argument more closely the wording quoted Meng Hao-Jan’s poetry original as a reference, the use of the information presently on the market common arguments appropriate to discuss whether the issues of Meng Hao-Jan’s poetry associated with the seasons, also no academic research, this article subject is equivalent to Meng Hao-Jan’s poetry and then a detailed study. Discussed research methods, this paper more induction Furthermore analysis. Choose to take part of Meng Hao-Jan’s poetry season writing, coupled with the induction of the subject property, This is written by lead. Summarization result, started to write Poems written analysis. The language of discourse and strive logical and poetry, as exemplified by. Season of poetry writing, as a significant theme application, common application of general principles, induction system, can be drawn Meng Hao-Jan writing poetry, writing the breadth of applications, and then assisted to use the analysis on the season, Meng Hao-Jan life, and poetry Department reference to his poetry, writing topics with useful research season. The purpose of this study, in short, to explore Meng Hao-Jan portrayed in the poetry season. In general, usually divided into seasons spring, summer, autumn and winter seasons, traditional Chinese festivals: such as the Double Ninth Festival, Winter Solstice, etc., but also into their creative material. Meng Hao-Jan clever use of the changing seasons and the surrounding scenery for with, and expand the mood of the poem, an increase poetic beauty, poetry with literary value. The study aimed to understand the association of the season of writing issues and Meng Hao-Jan’s poetry. Through analysis of poetry, Meng Hao-Jan status of the Tang Dynasty poetry and literary value, Meng Hao-Jan’s poetry season writing to construct a theoretical system, to supplement the theory of previous researchers, Meng Hao-Jan’s poetry research one step further, as of this writing research purposes.

The applications of the multimedia and network are always processing mass data such as picture, image, and voice. Especially, the data from the bank or stock market are very critical on processing and storing. The array structure of disks may support higher bandwidth. The RAID is applied when higher reliability is demanded. But the network server gets more disks and possibly has multiple disks fail in the same time. So the current RAID system retrieving only one disk failure is not powerful enough. The RAID was developed by UCB [1,2] and there are many discussions about RAID. The Even-Odd code can eliminate one disk error or dual disk erasure [3-6], but decreased the RAID performance. This thesis presents a Reed-Solomon code to improve the reliability of RAIDs. The transfer rate of the RS code has been developed up to 100MB/s. and it is believed that it can match the need of modern system. In this thesis, a prototyped RAID system using RS code has been build. It reduces the latency of access and small write overhead, and retrieve two disk erasures or one disk error. The final result improves efficiency over the original RAID.

Social, political and economical changes in modern society, as well as the growing need for aid and assistance, have resulted in the questioning of the work procedures within the social services of the Dutch Reformed Church. This has motivated the researcher to do research on the productivity and effectiveness of the Christelik-maatskaplike raad (CMR) as a branch of the "Sinodale Kommissie vir die Diens van Barmhartigheid" of Northern Transvaal. The investigation was undertaken by identifying a strategic productivity model in the literature and applying that model to the CMR of Pretoria. A qualitative, as well as a quantitative approach has been used and the study can be described as exploratory/descriptive. The literature ·study indicated that not only physical but also human factors influence the productivity within the organisation. A description was given of the physical set-up of the organisation and of the attempts that have been made to improve productivity. It was found that a large number of these factors do indeed play a role in the organisation. The findings showed that social workers are aware of the necessary changes that must occur to create a better productivity function. Recommendations were made concerning the changes of the work procedure of the CMR, in order to improve the quality of the services rendered and to eliminate the factors that have had a detrimental influence on the productivity of the organisation.

The RAID, with high throughput and reliability, is drawing more and more attention in the multimedia and network applications. With modem VLSI manufacture process and new HDD technology, the requirement of disk reliability is growing up. In the passed 20 years, most error-free technique in RAID used parity check. This technique can solve one erasure or one disk failure problem. The ENENODD[5][6] is the first method to solve two-disks failure, but the recover mode is too complex to implement in VLSI. In addition, huge cache memory is required. Reed-Solomon (RS) Codes[12][13] have the outstanding ability of error correction with little memory required. Many papers about error free of RAID tell us that the RS codes are very complex in coding and decoding[8]. In this thesis, we simplify the RS codes decoder[11] and solve the small write problem[15]. Those IPs provide transparent and real-time operation in system design. It’s more efficient to implement in VLSI and may support the SoC total solution in high-level internet-multimedia file server in the future.

The birth of a baby is a life-changing event in a person's life. During this time there are expectations of positive feelings. The new mother experience ambivalent feelings about the new phase in her life. These feelings can range from a feeling of excitement, postpartum-tears, anxiety about the baby's care, depression and psychosis with an onset in the postpartum period. The goal of this research was to identify indicators for postpartum depression, that are present during pregnancy, during the delivery and in the postpartum period, in order to identify and treat a high risk client for postpartum depression in time. In this way mental health will be promoted. In the first part of the research, an exploratory, descriptive design was used within the context of a private and provincial baby clinic on the Westrand. The research firstly consisted of a literature study about the indicators for postpartum depression. A questionnaire was compiled from this literature study and it was used to collect data in a private and provincial clinic. A descriptive and explanatory design was used in the second part of the research study, to determine a connection between the indicators of postpartum depression and a diagnosis of postpartum depression. The test sample comprised of all the women who visited a postpartum baby clinic (private as well as provincial) in the postpartum period, who's baby was six months or younger. The questionnaire was completed with their visit to the baby clinic and then returned to the respective fieldworkers.

Abstract:
M.A. (Linguistics)
Unlike in the natural sciences, the study fields of the social sciences are closely related and large areas overlap - with regard to the use of terminology as well. However there are also differences, and in an institution such as the Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC) which comprises a heterogeneous community of subject specialists, not only the different subjects fields are represented, but also the different schools of thought (universities). In order to conduct human sciences research, the subject specialists should communicate with one another within these subject fields, but also across the borders of the different human sciences disciplines. The aim of this study was to standardize selected human sciences terminology used in the HSRC in order to provide a source of such terminology to be used mainly by HSRC personnel, and to enhance communication in this way. A theoretical review of the fields of standardization and sUbject lexicography was given. The former field was subdivided into linguistic standardization, technical language standardization and organizational standardization, and a clear organizational standardization process was distinguished on the basis of the steps of collecting, submitting, processing and distributing terminology. The field of subject lexicography concerned technical dictionaries and terminology lists, and the issue of computerizing terminology was also dealt with. The organizational standardization process with respect to HSRC terminology was explained and problematic terms identified in the study were discussed. The terminology involved in the study had been collected over a number of years by the language practitioners at the Centre for Language Services eCLS) of the HSRC, recorded on cards and later entered into the computer. In the study the terminology was submitted to the various sUbject specialists in the HSRC for their comment and approval, and their comments were subsequently researched and discussed by the CLS. The next step in the standardization process involves the processing of the comments so that the terminology can be distributed in the form of a publication or by means of a computerized database. The use of standardized terminology in the HSRC can contribute greatly towards improving communication between subject specialists and if the computerized information is transferred to the National Term Bank of the National Terminology Services as planned, the standardized HSRC terminology can be of use outside the HSRC as well.
