Full textDen här rapporten beskriver och utvärderar ett antal algoritmer för multisensordatafusion av radar och IR/TV-data på rådatanivå. Med rådatafusion menas att fusionen ska ske innan attribut- eller objektextrahering. Attributextrahering kan medföra att information går förlorad som skulle kunna förbättra fusionen. Om fusionen sker på rådatanivå finns mer information tillgänglig och skulle kunna leda till en förbättrad attributextrahering i ett senare steg. Två tillvägagångssätt presenteras. Den ena metoden projicerar radarbilden till IR-vyn och vice versa. Fusionen utförs sedan på de par av bilder med samma dimensioner. Den andra metoden fusionerar de två ursprungliga bilderna till en volym. Volymen spänns upp av de tre dimensionerna representerade i ursprungsbilderna. Metoden utökas också genom att utnyttja stereoseende. Resultaten visar att det kan vara givande att utnyttja stereoseende då den extra informationen underlättar fusionen samt ger en mer generell lösning på problemet.
This thesis describes and evaluates a number of algorithms for multi sensor fusion of radar and IR/TV data. The fusion is performed on raw data level, that is prior to attribute extraction. The idea is that less information will be lost compared to attribute level fusion. Two methods are presented. The first method transforms the radar image to the IR-view and vice versa. The images sharing the same dimension are then fused together. The second method fuses the original images to a three dimensional volume. Another version is also presented, where stereo vision is used. The results show that stereo vision can be used with good performance and gives a more general solution to the problem.

Full textUrban areas feature an increasing dynamic of ecological, economic and social changes. This trend increases the demand for innovative methods to detect and monitor the resulting effects on the urban environment. In this context space borne earth observation has proven to be a cost-effective tool to gain profitable geo-information on various phenomena that concern spatial planning. Withal, in the near future new radar satellite systems will provide a basis for the operational and detailed analysis of settlements for the first time in history. In view of these satellite missions this dissertation investigates the capabilities of high resolution SAR imagery with respect to an automated analysis of urban characteristics. The underlying methodology is based on the object-oriented image analysis software eCognition. In this context the investigations have shown that both the effect of radar speckle and deficiencies regarding the quality of image segmentation as well as the definition of appropriate segmentation settings restrict the efficiency of a segment-based approach. Hence, this dissertation initially focuses on the development of concepts to optimise and stabilise the process of an object-oriented analysis of radar data. This study could show that there is still an ongoing demand for an effective and texture-preserving reduction of image speckle in dissected urban environments. Therefore, an innovative filtering algorithm is developed which allows for a more potent reduction of speckle noise in homogeneous areas while still preserving the texture information in highly structured regions of the SAR image. The difficulties associated with the accuracy and robustness of image segmentation are addressed by the development of a classification-based object-refinement procedure. At the same time this procedure allows for a more transparent and target-oriented definition of the image segmentation settings. However, the main focus of this dissertation is put on the development of concepts for an automated analysis of the regional and local structure of settlements. In the regional context the work aims at both identifying built-up areas and deriving land use categories such as settlement, open area, forest and water bodies. Thereby a rule base is first created which allows for the analysis of single-polarised SAR data. These rules mainly involve spatially and temporally robust, textural, hierarchical and context-related features. Next, this knowledge base is modified in order to facilitate the analysis of dual-polarised, dual-frequency or combined optical and radar-based imagery. The results of this study show that the settlements and the defined land use classes can be identified with an overall accuracy of around 90 percent – even on the basis of single-polarised SAR data. By considering an additional polarisation, frequency or optical data set this accuracy can be increased significantly to values of up to 95 percent. The local analyses aim at a spatially and thematically more detailed description of the land use pattern within built-up areas. Since an isolated analysis of SAR-data – even when combining different polarisations or frequencies – could not suffice to characterise the highly dissected urban environment, this investigation is based on the synergetic use of a high-resolution SAR image and a medium resolution optical data set. In this context the radar image is mainly employed to describe the urban topography, while the optical data provides important features for the detailed differentiation of the extracted structural units into the categories building, sealed surface, unsealed surface and trees. The result of this study exemplifies that the synergetic analysis of a high resolution SAR image and a medium resolution optical data set enables the survey of the defined urban land use classes with a comparably limited accuracy of 65 percent. Nevertheless, within the scope of this classification the category “building” could be identified with an accuracy of 72 percent. This dissertation aimed at demonstrating the suitability of high resolution SAR data for the characterisation of urban environments based on an established image analysis approach. With regard to this objective the dissertation has demonstrated that an automated analysis of built-up areas encounters significant difficulties due to the limited spectral resolution and the strong dependency of backscatter on the viewing and target geometry. Nevertheless, the functionality of the multiscale object-oriented classification approach could compensate for these limitations to some degrees. Thereby, the regional analyses – including the identification of built-up areas and the analysis of land use – led to convincing results. In contrast, the characterisation of the local urban land use pattern pointed out the limitations of radar remote sensing for classifying complex urban environments
