Abstract:
New Zealand has a paradoxical relationship with nuclear science. We are as proud of Ernest Rutherford, known as the father of nuclear science, as of our nuclear-free status. Early enthusiasm for radium and X-rays in the first half of the twentieth century and euphoria in the 1950s about the discovery of uranium in a West Coast road cutting was countered by outrage at French nuclear testing in the Pacific and protests against visits from American nuclear-powered warships. New Zealand today has a strong nuclear-free identity – a result of the New Zealand Nuclear Free Zone, Disarmament and Arms

How populations differentiate and become new species is a foundational question to the field of evolutionary biology and has important implications for the generation of both local and global patterns of species-level biodiversity. Ernst Mayr emphasised the importance of geographical isolation as a driver of speciation: “populations in separate locations begin a process of differentiation, and once differentiation is sufficient the populations have become two species”. In marine environments, the lack of obvious physical barriers would suggest that panmixia, especially in highly mobile species

Abstract The materials for ABWR have been selected based on consideration of intergranular stress corrosion cracking (IGSCC) resistance, cobalt reduction, radiation effects, and BWR performance history. In addition, minimizing in-service inspection has been addressed by elimination of vessel seam welds and use of forged and bent piping sections. It is an objective of the project to draw on 30-years of BWR materials technology development and experience to produce a reactor system free of materials-related problems affecting performance.
