Abstract:
Prognosis for lung cancer patients remains poor. For those receiving radiation therapy, local control and survival have been shown to improve with increased doses; however, deliverable dose is often limited by associated toxicity. Therefore, methods that reduce dose to normal tissues and allow isotoxic escalation are desirable. Adaptive radiation therapy seeks to improve treatment by modifying the initial plan throughout delivery, and has been shown to decrease normal tissue dose. Studies to date suggest a trend of increasing benefit with increases in replanning frequency; however, replanning

This thesis seeks to use mathematical and computational models to develop measures of clinically available data to deepen our understanding, and improve our treatments, of cancer. We consider two broad characteristics of cancer: heterogeneity, in the form of differences in cellular phenotype, and the physical microenvironment; and evolution, which has become accepted as a driver of tumour progression. To ensure that the conclusions drawn are as translatable as possible, we will attempt to use data types that are clinically available. Using a hybrid discrete-cell-based model in two spatial dime

An important cause of this elevated risk is recognised to be irradiation of normal tissues during radiotherapy received as part of cancer therapy.
The online adaptive radiation therapy for prostate cancer based on re-optimization has been shown to provide better daily target coverage through the treatment course, especially in treatment sessions with large anatomical deformation. However, the clinical implementation of such technique is still limited primarily due to two major challenges: the low efficiency of re-optimization and the lack of online quality assurance technique to verify delivery accuracy. This project aims at developing new techniques and understandings to address these two challenges.

The study was based on ret

The use of positron emission tomography (PET) in radiation therapy has continued to grow, especially since the development of combined computed tomography (CT) and PET imaging system in the early 1990s. Today, the biggest use of PET-CT is in oncology, where a glucose analog radiotracer is rapidly incorporated into the metabolic pathways of a variety of cancers. Images representing the in-vivo distribution of this radiotracer are used for the staging, delineation and assessment of treatment response of patients undergoing chemotherapy or radiation therapy. While PET offers the ability to pro

The developments of highly conformal and precise radiation therapy techniques promote the necessity of more accurate treatment target localization and tracking. On-board imaging techniques, especially the x-ray based techniques, have found a great popularity nowadays for on-board target localization and tracking. With an objective to improve the accuracy of on-board imaging for lung cancer patients, the dissertation work focuses on the investigations of using limited-angle on-board x-ray projections for image guidance. The limited-angle acquisition enables scan time and imaging dose reducti

The outcomes for both (i) radiation therapy and (ii) preclinical small animal radio- biology studies are dependent on the delivery of a known quantity of radiation to a specific and intentional location. Adverse effects can result from these procedures if the dose to the target is too high or low, and can also result from an incorrect spatial distribution in which nearby normal healthy tissue can be undesirably damaged by poor radiation delivery techniques. Thus, in mice and humans alike, the spatial dose distributions from radiation sources should be well characterized in terms of the absolu

Purpose of this study was to validate a novel CyberKnife stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT) treatment planning on an MRI-based 3D prostate model insert in an anthropomorphic pelvis phantom using Gafchromic EBT3 films to perform dosimetric measurements. The methodology of this study is based on a pelvis phantom and a physical printed 3D model of the prostate with dominant intra-prostatic-lesion and surrounding organs at risk segmented from a patient MR images. Cyberknife prostate treatment planning was performed to have at least 95% the planning target volumes (PTV: prostate expanded with ma

Ferrets popularity as pets is increasing in North America and Europe and appear more frequently in veterinary practice. Therefore, it is important to study this specie in order to provide advanced medical care. After insulinoma and adrenocortical neoplasia, lymphoma is the third more common neoplasia in domestic ferrets, and this condition appears to be increasing in frequency. Lymphoma can be described as a proliferation of neoplastic lymphoid cells, and can occur in ferrets of all ages and in practically all organ systems. Despite various theories, the exact etiology of lymphoma remains unk

Advances in cancer treatment have led to a significant increase in the number of pediatric oncology survivors. These survivors often have late effects in their cognitive, academic, executive, and psychological functioning subsequent to their chemotherapy and radiation treatment. In particular, executive functioning (EF), which is crucial for cognitive and academic functioning, has been recognized as an area that is impacted by treatment. Several studies have described cognitive remediation programs that seek to improve EF skills in pediatric oncology survivors. Although these programs have led
