Abstract:
This study is an exploratory assessment of the role of private radio stations in promoting participatory democracy in Lesotho. It seeks to describe the current situation of the role of radio in the country, including levels of rural development programming and community participation. There are eight private radio stations operating in the country. The emergence of the liberalised airwaves created an opportunity for people to have access to information, hence promotion of participatory democracy, though problem of freedom of expression and speech and absence of media policy hinders positive effective participation in issues affecting both journalists and society. The study will use a survey within the purposely selected media professionals to assess how citizens obtain and use information to make informed political choices as well as to measure the influence of private radio stations on political knowledge, attitudes and behavior. The field research will take place in the capital Maseru, where all the private radio stations are based. This will enable the researcher to draw inferences about the role of private radio stations and participatory democracy in Lesotho. The study explores changes that have occurred following the emergence of liberalisation of the radio airwaves in Lesotho from 1994, from almost a century of state owned and dominated national radio station. The central argument in this study is to establish if liberalisation of the airwaves in particular has a significant impact on the democratisation process in the country. Given the country’s limited literacy rate and historic role of broadcast media in Lesotho as a source of all major official information, private radio stations occupies a central role of mobilising and debating issues of national concern. The study, therefore, concludes that the emergence of the private radio stations in Lesotho has increased community participation in political and current affairs. The coverage of radio in the country and its pluralistic character suggest that the private radio stations will remain a crucial broadcast medium of communication in Lesotho, especially for the rural people whose access to television and print are inaccessible.

Abstract:
Radio base station(RBS) is the key infrastructure in wireless network and the main product of Ericsson. To improve the efficiency and success rate of RBS maintenance is therefore necessary and beneficial to Ericsson. Augmented reality is a promising solution by annotating computer generated guiding information on real world to enhance the information received during the maintenance. This thesis developed a workable AR application for RBS to evaluate the feasibility and difficulty of applying AR on RBS. Based on Android platform, the application used Vuforia from Qualcomm and Unity as tracking and rendering package respectively. Tracked result was imported to Unity and processed by low pass filters to remove noise. Filtered data was then used to build a distributed world coordinate frame array to cover the entire RBS panel. On this distributed world coordinate frame array, digital contents such as audio, animation were placed and controlled by a task state machine. Drove by the user control in user interface layer, the task state machine provide a flexible task scheduling scheme for task navigation. At last, digital contents and real time video captured by phone camera were synthesized and rendered on the cellphone screen. The result presented a practicable AR solution for RBS maintenance and reveals the advantages and disadvantages of deploying AR technology for RBS. Certain suggestions were also described based on the development.

Mudzingwa, Courage. "A real time HF beacon monitoring station for South Africa." Thesis, Rhodes University, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/10962/d1005272.

Abstract:
High frequency, HF (3 - 30 MHz), radio communications are greatly affected by ionospheric conditions. Both civilian and military users need reliable, real time propagation information to show at any time the feasibility of communicating to any part of the world on a particular frequency band. For this thesis, an automated receiving/monitoring station for the Northern California DX Foundation (NCDXF)/ International Amateur Radio Union (IARU) International Beacon Project was setup at the Hermanus Magnetic Observatory, HMO (34.42oS, 19.22oE) to monitor international beacons on 20 m, 17 m, 15 m, 12 m and 10 m bands. The beacons form a world wide multiband network. The task of monitoring the beacons was broken down into two steps. Initially the single band station, at 14.10 MHz, was installed and later it was upgraded to a multiband station capable of automatically monitoring all the five HF bands. The single band station setup involved the construction and installation of the half-wave dipole antenna, construction and installation of an HF choke balun; and the choice of Faros 1.3 as the appropriate monitoring software. The multiband monitoring station set-up involved the installation of an MFJ-1778 G5RV multiband antenna, construction and installation of a Communication Interface - V (CI-V) level converter and configuring the Faros 1.3 software to monitor the beacons on all five HF bands. Then a web page was created on the HMO space weather website (http://spaceweather.hmo.ac.za). Here, the real-time signal to noise ratio (SNR) and short path (SP)/long path (LP) plots are uploaded every 3 minutes, showing real time HF propagation conditions on the five HF bands. Historical propagation data are archived for later analysis. A preliminary data analysis was done to confirm the peration of the monitoring station. The archived data were analysed and compared to ICEPAC (Ionospheric Communications Enhanced Profile Analysis and Circuit) predictions. Results show that the real-time signal plots as well as the archive of historical signal plots, convey information on ropagation conditions to users in terms that are easy to interpret and understand.

Pålstam, Simon. "Radio Localization with GSM." Thesis, Linköpings universitet, Reglerteknik, 2016. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:liu:diva-132395.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis presents a feasibility study on unobtrusive localization of GSM en- abled cellphones using a Fake Base Station (FBS). An FBS is a radio transceiver that emulates the behaviour of a legitimate GSM Base Station (BS) to fool unal- tered cellphones to connect with it. This feasibility study investigates how an FBS can be utilized to estimate positions of connected cellphones in an area of interest. We present a proof of concept system that consists of a mobile FBS that measures the Time Of Arrival (TOA) and Received Signal Strength (RSS) to a cell- phone. The positions of the mobile FBS are determined with GPS. We employ calibration-free localization algorithms as we assume unknown environments and unknown hardware. Our experiments in an outdoor 180x100 m2 Line-Of- Sight (LOS) environment show that our calibration-free localization algorithms provide an average localization error less than 10 meters, which is sufficient for most applications of interest. In addition, our experiments show that RSS-based localization outperforms TOA-based localization when the average distance be- tween the FBS and cellphone is roughly 50 meters. Our experiments show that TOA-based localization outperforms RSS-based localization when the average dis- tance increases to roughly 75 meters. This research is part of the Smart Savannah project in which a wide range of different surveillance systems are developed to protect rhinos from poachers. We envision that our localization system can be used to detect and localize these poachers in an unobtrusive way. In addition, we envision that our localization sys- tem can be used in Search And Rescue (SAR) operations to estimate the positions of cellphones of missing persons.

Larsson, Joachim. "CPU Load Control of LTE Radio Base Station." Thesis, Linköpings universitet, Reglerteknik, 2015. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:liu:diva-123499.

Full text
Abstract:
A radio base station (RBS) may become overloaded if too many mobile devices communicate with it at the same time. This could happen at for instance sport events or in the case of accidents. To prevent CPU overload, the RBS is provided with a controller that adjusts the acceptance rate, the maximum number of connection requests that can be accepted per time interval. The current controller is tuned in real radio base stations and the procedure is both time consuming and expensive. This, combined with the fact that the mobile data usage is predicted to increase puts more pressure on today's system. Thus, there is a need to be able to simulate the system in order to suggest an alternative controller. In this thesis, an implementation of the system is developed in Matlab in order to simulate the RBS system load control behaviour. A CPU load model is estimated using system identification. The current version of the CPU load controller and an alternative PI CPU load controller are implemented. Both are evaluated on different test cases and this shows that it is possible to increase the performance of the system with the alternative CPU load controller, both in terms of lower amount of rejected connection requests and decreased CPU load overshoot.

Ojur, Barbara Apili. "Low cost and portable software defined radio ground station." Master's thesis, Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment, 2019. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/30943.

Abstract:
Small satellites are being launched by a multitude of private and public organizations around the world. They are innately cheaper than their large counterparts. This attribute, and additional ones, such as their easy-to-assemble nature and the convenience of using commercially available off-the-shelf parts to build them has enhanced their popularity. Now that getting into space has become more accessible there is an influx of information available from small satellites, however the information is not being utilized too efficiently on Earth. One reason as to why this is evident is because traditional ground stations, which are largely hardware dependent, are expensive to develop. However, with the introduction of Software Defined Radios (SDRs) many of the operations formerly done using hardware can now be implemented in software. Using a SDR can substantially reduce the cost of a traditionally hardware-based ground station. A number of universities and other organizations have or are developing SDR ground stations to communicate with satellites in different orbits. The ability to receive or transmit signals is important because it displays the capability to develop and operate satellites to various stakeholders. This dissertation attempted to enhance the movement towards satellite communication using SDR technology by developing a low cost, portable, easy to assemble and extendable ground station at the University of Cape Town in order to make contact with one or more small satellites in Low Earth Orbit (LEO), to encourage data usage, national and international collaboration and education. The ground station was constructed and tested based on its objectives, requirements and constraints. The commissioning tests were conducted in the SpaceLab at the University of Cape Town. The ground station was able to make contact with two small satellites in LEO successfully. Packets were received from two satellites that clearly stated who they were. The information contained in the packets was decoded into ASCII text and Hex code. They were compared with other successful amateur ground station results from all over the world to verify their authenticity. The main conclusion was that the SDR ground station was able to make contact with small satellites in LEO operating in the 70-cm band.

Olsen, Snorre Haugstulen. "Radio Tracking of Open Range Sheep : Methods for Radio Location in a Sub-GHz Base Station Network." Thesis, Norges teknisk-naturvitenskapelige universitet, Institutt for elektronikk og telekommunikasjon, 2014. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:no:ntnu:diva-26649.

Abstract:
This thesis aims to compare methods of radio location for the purpose of tracking sheep by using sub-GHz radio transceivers arranged in a base station network. Nearly 10% of free-grazing sheep in Norway are lost every year, creating losses for both farmers and the government. Tracking technology may reduce these losses. Existing tracking solutions based on GPS and GSM are commercially available, but previous research shows that poor signal conditions in grazing areas limit their efficacy. An alternative tracking system using the low-power CC1120 transceiver from Texas Instruments is outlined and evaluated for the two following methods of radio location. Hyperbolic trilateration uses time difference of arrival (TDoA) estimates for receiver pairs and circular trilateration uses received signal strength (RSSI) to perform radio location. Initial measurements show that the transceiver alone should not be used for TDoA estimation because its trigger signals are only accurate to within 25% of the predetermined symbol interval. In future work, TDoA can be estimated by comparing the bit streams taken directly from the A/D-converter (ADC) of two base stations. This requires additional hardware but is expected to be accurate enough to locate sheep.A small-scale outdoors radio location experiment was carried out using RSSI measurements from the CC1120, and circular trilateration with three base stations approximately 200 m apart. A propagation model was fitted to calibration data using linear regression. Position estimates were calculated by both linear and non-linear least squares approximation using MATLAB. The average error of the position estimates was 55.8 m. The error in the full-scale system for this method is estimated to be several kilometres, too large for tracking sheep. In conclusion, the TDoA-based hyperbolic trilateration method is the only one showing promise. Challenges related to synchronicity between the base stations are expected to be met using GPS receivers. Additional work with extracting the bit streams is required before the TDoA can be estimated with sufficient accuracy.

Abstract:
The purpose of this treatise is a development of a suitable model for a community radio station which would lead to operational effectiveness and ensure sustainability. The treatise has three phases namely a theoretical phase, a narration phase and an integration phase. Firstly, in the theoretical phase the research study investigates what the literature review reveals about community radio stations and business models. This treatise argues that a total dependency of community radio stations on donor funding leads to operational ineffectiveness which threatens their sustainability. The treatise also argues that a business model could be adapted for a community radio station by identifying the business issues which the literature review revealed, and use these to deconstruct a theoretical business model. Secondly, in the narrative phase the research study investigates the important business issues for a selected community radio station. The treatise argues the board and management of this selected community radio station revealed additional business issues of operations and gave different ratings to business issues which are important in their operations. Thirdly, in the integration phase, the theoretical model deconstructed in the theoretical phase, was revised by including additional business issues of operations revealed in the narrative phase. The research study concludes that this revised model is a suitable business model for a community radio station and can lead to operational effectiveness and ensure sustainability.

Abstract:
Today more devices are being connected to the Internet via mobile networks. With more devices in mobile networks, the workload on radio base stations increases. Radio base stations must be energy efficient and cheap which makes high-performance central processing units (CPUs) a bad alternative to meet the increasing workload. An alternative could be a graphics processing unit (GPU) which have a different hardware architecture more suitable for data parallel problems. This thesis has investigated the parallelisation possibilities in the user-equipment handling part of radio base stations, and the aim was to use a GPU to take advantage of the parallelism. The investigation found a mixed pipeline and data parallelism in user-equipment handling. A parallelism suitable for a graphics processing unit (GPU) execution. The tasks which handle user-equipment were divided into smaller communication-free sub-tasks. Sub-task batches of user-equipment were collected and offloaded to a GPU. A peak throughput gain of 62.2 times over the single-threaded CPU was achieved, but with an impact on latency with more than a magnitude. The latency was for all workloads at least 1.24 higher for the GPU implementations compared to the CPU implementations. A radio base station with many more user-equipment than the once existing today was simulated. For this radio base station, a gain of 14.0 times the single-threaded CPU was achieved, while the latency increased by 2.4 times. To really make use of a GPU implementation the number of user-equipment, the load, must be higher than in existing radio base stations today.

Abstract:
The problem of this study was to document the history of radio station WKY, Oklahoma City, and to locate its place within the development of American radio broadcasting. This thesis divides WKY's history into two periods: 1920 through 1925, the years it was operated by Earl Hull, and 1926 through 1989, after it was acquired by E. K. Gaylord. The purpose of this study was to record the history of the oldest radio station operating west of the Mississippi River, its effect on the broadcast industry in general, and its effect on Gaylord Broadcasting Corporation, the parent organization. The study also explored the innovations. in both programming and engineering that caused the station to grow into one of the most popular radio stations in the Southwest, as well as its decline in recent years.

Holtkamp, Hauke Andreas. "Enhancing the energy efficiency of radio base stations." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/9376.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is concerned with the energy efficiency of cellular networks. It studies the dominant power consumer in future cellular networks, the Long Term Evolution (LTE) radio Base Station (BS), and proposes mechanisms that enhance the BS energy efficiency by reducing its power consumption under target rate constraints. These mechanisms trade spare capacity for power saving. First, the thesis describes how much power individual components of a BS consume and what parameters affect this consumption based on third party experimental data. These individual models are joined into a component power model for an entire BS. The component model is an essential step in analysis but is too complex for many applications. It is therefore abstracted into a much simpler parameterized model to reduce its complexity. The parameterized model is further simplified into an affine model which can be applied in power minimization. Second, Power Control (PC) and Discontinuous Transmission (DTX) are identified as promising power-saving Radio Resource Management (RRM) mechanisms and applied to multi-user downlink transmission. PC reduces the power consumption of the Power Amplifier (PA) and is found to be most effective at high traffic loads. DTX mostly reduces the power consumption of the Baseband (BB) unit while interrupting transmission and is better applied in low traffic loads. Joint optimization of these two techniques is found to enable additional power-saving at medium traffic loads and to be a convex problem which can be solved efficiently. The convex problem is extended to provide a comprehensive power-saving Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple Access (OFDMA) frame resource scheduler. The proposed scheduler is shown to reduce power consumption by 25-40% in computer simulations, depending on the traffic load. Finally, the thesis investigates the influence of interference on power consumption in a network of multiple power-saving BSs. It discusses three popular alternative distributed uncoordinated methods which align DTX mode between neighbouring BSs. To address drawbacks of these three, a fourth memory-based DTX alignment method is proposed. It decreases power consumption by up to 40% and retransmission probability by around 20%, depending on the traffic load.

Abstract:
With the evolution of technology the system becomes large and complex. The probability of faults to occur in the system also increases with the size of the system. It is almost impossible to make the system fault free thus Fault Management System (FMS) is required to make the system fault tolerant which keeps the system operational even in the presence of transient fault and recover the system. The FMS is quite complex and sophisticated for large systems and it requires smart technique to verify FMS. Fault injection technique is emerging technique to verify the system robustness and its fault tolerance. There are various types of fault injection techniques and each type has its own characteristics. In this thesis, Ericsson’s Digital Unit of Radio Base Station (RBS) is used as target system. This research work involves the study of RBS hardware, software and also various fault injection techniques. Previously each module of FMS is tested in lab separately. With this new approach the complete FMS is tested in lab while system being operational. Based on this investigation, Hybrid FI technique is proposed and implemented to verify its feasibility. This technique requires change in target’s hardware and fault injector software. Experiment is performed on RBS connected to client via network. The result of an experiment is compiled in the end of this report. This research work concludes that the FMS can be verified with FI technique. This technique not only reduces the verification time but also increase the reliability of the system by increasing the fault coverage.

Abstract:
This thesis is a case study analysis of the dream one radio station had about creating something new and unique on the Internet. RadioSonderGrense (RSG), an Afrikaans South African radio station, saw opportunities for themselves as a radio station on the Internet and put enormous resources and man-power into their venture. Their vision of what the Internet could bring to their radio station, and what they could bring to a website set the ground for creative and innovative thought. This dissertation is an examination of whether the Internet lived up to the expectations RSG had for it, and whether they were able to use their resources (in terms of their audience, their advertisers and the uniqueness of radio) to create something new and never seen before. The foremost aim of this dissertation is to shed some light onto the up-to-now under researched area of why radio stations have begun to develop on the Internet. Through the analysis of RSG, their comes to this subject some new thoughts and ideas about the convergence of these two mediums. RSG, and radio in general, are examined historically, practically and in comparison to the Internet. This is done in order to fully grasp the project that RSG had set for themselves and to realize where they had come from and where they hoped to go. It is argued that although RSG had hoped for great things, their innovative thought was not enough to guarantee them their dreams. They were not able to fully utilize the resources available to them in combination with what the Internet could offer them to fulfill the expectations they had for themselves. The foremost conclusion is that although RSG were able to envisage what the Internet could add to the radio station, they fell short of giving their listeners, users and advertisers a tool which could make the RSG website truly unique. Their website gives the user some interesting and useful applications, but it does not make full use of what the Internet and radio together could create.

Abstract:
This study tested the job satisfaction of major market radio station general managers in the aftermath of deregulation. The study consisted of two phases, a quantitative, anonymous, mail survey utilizing the nationally recognized Job Descriptive Index (JDI); and a qualitative follow-up telephone interview. Of 246 general managers solicited, 144 returned usable JDI surveys. The JDI consisted of six separate scales, each measuring satisfaction on a different aspect of the job. The followup telephone interview comprised seven questions designed specifically to explore the effects of broadcast deregulation on the respondents. Two hypotheses were tested. The hypotheses tested for differences in job satisfaction scores between radio station general managers and the normative scores of individuals of similar education and job tenure in other industries. In most of the subscales tested there was no significant difference between the two groups. The qualitative telephone survey found widespread dissatisfaction with the effects of deregulation on the broadcast medium.

One of the department’s goals is to seek a possible replacement to the box test instruments by utilizing PCI extension for instrumentation (PXI) modules. The main objective of this project is to evaluate how different PXI modules work during testing of a radio base station (RBS), in terms of performance, test time, and cost. A downlink decoder was implemented in LabVIEW with an extension called MathScript and several software test solutions were examined to measure error vector magnitude (EVM), frequency error, and power, and to perform parallel measurements in a multiple radio access technology (multi-RAT) test configuration. Moreover, several uplink tests were performed to decide if PXI modules are a suitable substitute for the previous box based test instruments. The findings from this study show that PXI modules can replace the previous box based test instruments. However it was concluded that not all areas can be covered and not all discrete test instrument can (yet) be replaced. Future work should complete the downlink decoder implementation in the field programmable gate array (FPGA) level in order to further improve the performance further. Future work should also examine if it is possible to replace all of the discrete test instruments with PXI modules.

Abstract:
In 1923 the Oregon Agricultural College began broadcasting market information and weather reports to farmers in the Willamette Valley. By 1958 the programming had expanded to include everything from symphonies to lectures in psychology. This thesis poses the following questions: How did the producers and funders of Station KOAC understand the medium’s potential to reach spaces they believed were isolated from the promise of modernity? What were the values that the state prioritized through its funding of Station KOAC? How did listeners understand and experience KOAC? Based on archival research, I argue that the station was recruited to welcome rural and domestic listeners into modernity and simultaneously task them with the maintenance of traditional institutions on which the state relied. However it also brought information and companionship to listeners, who claimed their own citizenship through state supported radio.

The study examined how the introduction of high-speed internet into a rural community affected audience members' use of their local radio station. A qualitative case study was guided by uses and gratifications and niche theory. The author conducted interviews with KMMR FM audience members in Malta, Montana, to investigate how the introduction of high-speed internet impacted listener habits. Twenty participants who either listened to or produced content for KMMR FM were interviewed. The author performed a thematic analysis of different uses for the radio guided by typologies created by Rubin (1983), Palmgreen and Rayburn (1979), and Katz, Haas, and Gurevitch (1973). The results showed the internet and the radio gratify different needs for audience members: radio was used the most for local information and the internet for more specialized needs that could not be met by the radio. The findings also showed that the radio is important in fostering a sense of social cohesion within the community

Abstract:
Spatially-programmed architectures such as FPGA are among the most prevailing hardware in various application areas. However FPGA suffers from great overheads such as area, latency and power efficiency. Coarse-grained Reconfigurable Architecture (CGRA) is designed in order to compensate these disadvantages of FPGA. In this thesis, a Triggered Instruction based novel CGRA designed by Intel is evaluated. Benchmark work in this thesis focuses on signal processing area. Three performance limiting functions, Channel Estimation, Radix-2 FFT and Interleaving are selected from LTE Uplink Receiver PHY Benchmark which is an open source benchmark, and implemented and analyzed in Triggered Instruction Architecture (TIA). Throughput-area relationships and throughput/area-area relationships are summarized in curves using a resource estimation method. The benchmark result shows that TIA offers good flexibility for temporal and spatial execution, and a mix of them. Designs in TIA are scalable and adjustable according to different performance requirement. Moreover, based on the development work, this thesis discusses development flow of TIA, various programming techniques, low latency mapping solutions, code size comparison, development environment and integration of heterogeneous system with TIA.

Abstract:
In the last decade the world has seen a steadily increasing number of Cube Satellites deployed to Low Earth Orbit. Traditionally, these cubesats rely on Amateur Radio communications technology that are proven to work from space. However, as data volumes increase, the existing Amateur Radio protocols, combined with the restrictions of use for the Amateur Radio Spectrum, as well as the trend to build one control station per cubesat, result in a bottle neck effect whereby existing communications methods are no longer sufficient to support the increasing data volumes of the spacecraft. This Masters Thesis work explores the concept of deploying a network of distributed ground station receiver nodes for the purposes of increasing access time to the spacecraft, and thereby increasing the potential amount of data that can be transferred from orbit to the ground. The current trends in cubesat communications will be analyzed and an argument will be made in favor of transitioning to more modern digital communications approaches for on orbit missions. Finally, a candidate ground station receiver node design is presented a possible design that could be used to deploy such a network.

The growing demand for mobile telephony services and the advent of new technologies requires their continued expansion, in order to ensure safe, reliable and high quality to its users. As a direct consequence of this growth has been the need to increase the amount of Radio Base Stations (RBS) to be installed. This expansion may have visual impacts and damage to the health of the population in the surrounding areas of the base stations, seeking always the best practices for the deployment of base stations. This model is based on policies that allow for expansion of services of mobile networks and, at the same time reduce the visual impact of these facilities as well as damage to the health of the surrounding area of the population, in a complementary manner to the applicable legislation. This concern is motivated by the loss of quality of service presented by the mobile operators, due especially to the poor distribution of antenna signal distributors. The objective of this work is to make a diagnosis of the spatial distribution of Radio Base Stations in the city of Fortaleza, focusing on its normative aspects and the current management system and supervision of those cell sites. The technical and regulatory aspects of installations of base stations used in mobile telephony will be searched, focusing the case study in Fortaleza, in addition to identifying the public agencies responsible for managing the inspection of cell sites in this municipality, and establish their respective responsibilities. For this, the methodology used in the study is based on qualitative exploratory research, using the deductive method of approach, performing literature, through the consultation of books, periodicals, theses, dissertations and legislation available on mobile telephony in Brazil and world, its normative aspects and criteria for installation of base stations. Also we used a field survey, through structured interviews managers of public agencies responsible for the management and supervision of RBS. The study showed that Fortaleza has 843 base stations registered by ANATEL (2014), with 6.8 million active mobile lines. Research by the SEUMA showed, among other aspects, despite the demands of municipal law in 8914, supervising or is done randomly, or from accusations of \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\"disagreement\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\" made by the people and that the body responsible not talk to one itself.
Abstract:
In recent years, there has been a significant increase in the use of Global Positioning Satellite system (GPS) technology, consequently the usage of GPS receivers has increased. These GPS receivers can be used as a synchronization source for radio base stations by generating precise 1 pulse per second signals and providing National Marine Electronics Association (NMEA) data. The prototype developed in this thesis, implements a GPS receiver emulator to emulate a GPS receiver which is to be used for radio base station synchronization. Hardware and software have been used to generate the NMEA messages and to generate a precise 1 pulse per second signal. A graphical user interface (GUI) has been created in order to allow the operators of the emulator to input various parameters to the system used to emulate a GPS receiver. Using this emulator avoids the need for expensive GPS receivers and their connection to an antenna with a good view of the GPS satellites. More importantly, this GPS receiver emulator makes it easier to set up a lab environment for testing different situations with regard to signaling with NMEA data between the emulated GPS receiver and the radio base station equipment that is under test. For example, this allows tests involving incorrect NEMA messages or non once per second pulses.

Thesis (MPhil )--Stellenbosch University, 2011.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: With the advent of the information age, government ministries in Lesotho, as well as nongovernmental agencies, are trying to gain publicity in terms of services they offer to the general public. The Ministry of Employment and Labour (MEL), for example, resorted to using radio programmes in order to inform the public about the services it offers. These range from career guidance and counselling, pre- and post-employment advice, information about occupational health and safety and HIV/AIDS, providing facts about what type of vacancies are available locally and internationally, to instilling the spirit of dialogue among relevant stakeholders in matters related to labour, employers and employees. During various weekly radio presentations, presented in Sesotho, several departments are able to go on-air and present services that their departments offer to the general public and what the public can do in the event they are given a disservice by the concerned department. In the process of doing so, many technical terms are used. These often take the form of code switches into English, translations from English into Sesotho and borrowings from English. The purpose of this thesis is to examine whether the use of code switching, translation and borrowing makes it possible for factory workers in Lesotho to understand the message that is being delivered to them in a clear and unmistakable manner that will influence a change of behaviour on the part of factory workers. In order to ascertain the level of comprehension of technical terms, participants completed a questionnaire in which they gave their understanding of various technical terms selected from transcribed MEL radio broadcasts. The findings of this study show that the use of code switching, translation and borrowing from English limit the understanding of what is being communicated, making the radio broadcasts less effective in disseminating information on matters related to HIV/AIDS, the plight of factory workers according to the ratified conventions of the International Labour Organization (ILO), legal terms related to contracts of employment, their commencement and termination, conditions of work, the level of the unemployed versus the employed, skills needed to venture into the country’s labour market and occupational health and safety guidelines as reflected in the Labour Code of Lesotho.

Abstract:
When building various types of wide area cellular radio networks there is a need to synchronize all of the base stations within a given system. Today this is typically done by attaching a highly accurate clock to each radio base station. A GPS radio receiver is commonly used as such a clock. This thesis explores the use of the Precision Time Protocol (PTP) to provide synchronization of radio base stations, rather than the current practice of using GPS radio receivers. Advantages of utilizing PTP rather than a GPS radio receiver include the ability to easily locate radio base stations (without the need for connecting the GPS radio receiver to an antenna that has line of sight to a sufficient number of GPS satellites); the system is not vulnerable to interference with or jamming of GPS radio signals; the system is not vulnerable to spoofing of GPS radio signals, and because the new generations of radio base stations are connected to a packet based backhaul link – the system can potentially utilize the existing packet network interface (thus avoiding the need for a serial interface to the GPS receiver and a pulse per second input). At the start of this thesis project it was not known what the limits of PTP are (in terms of utilizing PTP together with radio base stations). Thus it was not clear whether PTP could be extended to much longer distances than it had originally been designed for.<p> This thesis shows that PTP can be used as an accurate timing source to synchronize base stations in networks with up to four switches between the PTP grandmaster and any PTP slave.<p> This project was performed in the Common Transport Feature department at Ericsson.

Abstract:
This research set out to investigate the role that community radio can potentially play as a space in which young people engage with their own role as citizens and, in so doing, participate in discussions that seek to address social problems in a community divided by class, income, gender and race. The study examines how a local community radio station - Radio Grahamstown - developed a youth programme Y4Yin which the producers of the show and its audience came together to negotiate the meaning of citizenship. The study examines whether this interactive programme was able to function as something like a public sphere where in young people were able to develop a greater sense of agency, at least in the realm of citizenship. Using evidence gathered through focus group discussions with a group of young school-going leamers, interviews conducted with the producers of the show Y4Y, and drawing on Dahlgren's elaboration of a functional public sphere, the research concludes that the show provided a useful platform for Grahamstown high school students to develop their own notions of citizenship and to, at least partially and tentatively, build some 'bridges' across the vectors of socio-economic division in the town. However, the research also concludes that the Y4Y producers often failed to use a mode of address contemporary to the youth and often did not use production techniques congruent with young people's cultural tastes. This limited the programme's appeal and its potential as an enabler of discussion about notions of citizenship and as a platform for social bridging. In addition, because of the producers' control over the choice of topics put up for discussion, open interaction was more limited than could have been expected. In addition, the study also concludes that various limitations to the leamers' freedom of expression (including their fear that teachers might be listening in to the shows) inhibited the programme's role as a deliberative public sphere where issues could be aired, common ground found, and solutions discussed.

Abstract:
The evolution of telecommunications has made passive intermodulation products (PIM) not only a criterion of quality and network performance but also a major problem for service providers such as mobile operators. The work presented in this manuscript is a contribution to the resolution of some of PIM problems in base station antennas and is organized around three main axes : - the characterization of passive intermodulation root causes within base station antennas. Numerous experimental studies have been carried out with the aim of determining the influence of different parameters on the PIM generated by metal-to-metal contacts (roughness of surfaces, use of surface treatment, geometry and nature of metals) or by printed circuits as microstrip type (matching, line width and thickness of dielectric substrate). The results of these studies contributed to improve theoretical knowledge and to define rules to reduce induced PIM levels ; - the localization of passive intermodulation root causes within complex radio frequency systems. For this, a specific PIM measurements bench has been designed. It allows locating PIM root causes, with a level close to the current 3GPP specification, with an accuracy less than 2cm. In addition, to ease the PIM defects detection in a base station antenna, various complementary methods have been developed and associated with the measurements bench ; - the electromagnetic modeling issued from the experimental studies, carried out of non-linear components usable into a circuit-type simulator. The use of these allows designers to estimate, early during the design stage, the PIM behavior of metal-to-metal contacts, microstrip and suspended stripline printed circuits

Saka, Thabiso Kenneth. "Radio Lesotho in a changing broadcasting environment." Thesis, 2003. http://hdl.handle.net/10413/4820.

Abstract:
The Kingdom of Lesotho undertook a number of liberalisation initiatives in broadcasting in the late 1990s. These include several attempts to formulate the media policy document as well as the opening of the airwaves for private broadcasting in 1998. However, Lesotho has not yet succeeded to remove the government control of the broadcasting sector. This thesis examines the process of liberalisation in Lesotho's broadcasting. It assesses the media policy as reflected in several policy documents. It further evaluates the introduction of independent regulation in broadcasting sector in 2001. The thesis argues that the government has not been fully committed to liberalisation of broadcasting sector and, as a result, it continues to control the sector.

Hlongoane, Mocoba Stephen. "An assessment of the contribution of community radio on HIV/AIDS awareness in LeSotho: the case of Mafeteng Community Radio Station (MCRS)." Diss., 2019. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/26988.

Abstract:
Since the first diagnosis of HIV/AIDS more than three decades ago, the epidemic remains a humanitarian challenge. In Sub-Saharan Africa, the infection rate has escalated at an alarming rate over the years. Lesotho is no exception. Multiple stakeholders have resorted to different media platforms, including community radio to communicate HIV/AIDS awareness messages with the aim of reducing the HIV infection spread. This study focuses on a community radio station as a way of making sense of HIV/AIDS communication. Using the case of MCRS, the study assesses the contribution of this community broadcaster on HIV/AIDS awareness in Mafeteng district, in Lesotho. Two theories: the Public Sphere Theory and the Agenda Setting Theory guided the study and were used to conceptualise the contribution of this community radio station towards contributing to HIV/AIDS awareness in the community of broadcast. In a bid to assess how MCRS programmes contribute to HIV/AIDS awareness and education; the researcher employed a qualitative research methodology. The data were collected using two data collection instruments, namely face-toface interviews and focus group discussions. Thematic analysis was used to deduce the meaning and present the findings. The findings reveal that MCRS programmes largely contribute to HIV/AIDS awareness in the community. The station’s programmes on HIV/AIDS awareness are easily understood and influence communities’ socio-behavioural change as they enlighten them about the dangers of HIV/AIDS and how to reduce its spread. The results also reveal that live broadcasts proved to be more effective as they encourage two-way communication whereby listeners are involved and participate in these HIV/AIDS programmes. It is therefore concluded that MCRS programmes have been useful in the dissemination of valuable HIV/AIDS awareness messages

Abstract:
This dissertation describes the work done to assemble and setup a radio station for satellite communications, with academic and research purposes. It begins to explain the importance of having such kind of facilities on campus, how this one in particular was setup along with all the problems that had to be solved on the way and finally are presented some results from its operation. Part of the equipment was brought back from an older setup and there was the need to update software and hardware, plus it was necessary to re-engineer the system to be compliant with the actual standards. During the development of this document, as the station was becoming operational several projects were developed concerning the use of the station for subjects related with satellite tracking, automatic control, GNSS signal processing and embedded systems. Lastly it will also be described some of the possible expansions that can be made in the near future to increase the station capabilities.
