Archaeological excavations conducted in 2017 at Grantown Road, Forres form the final phase of works on a residential development that began in 2002. The earlier works examined an area of more than 70ha and confirmed the presence of an extensive Iron Age settlement represented by ring-ditch, ring-groove, and post-ring structures, in association with four-post structures, a souterrain, and metalworking furnaces. The 2017 works (Canmore ID 320363), reported here, have expanded the record of prehistoric and medieval settlement in the area and revealed that a previously recorded cropmark site repre

The introduction of radiocarbon dating method in USSR and Ukrainian archeology was much slower compared to world practice. Natural scientific methods of dating in archeology have found quick application for the study of prehistoric sites — from the Paleolithic to the late Bronze Age. Much more time passed before the method began to be used for dating of sites of the 1st and 2nd millennium AD.
The initiative of serial sampling from the medieval archaeological complexes of Ukraine for radiocarbon analysis initially came not from archaeologists. This led at the first stage to a confrontatio

Natural textiles provide suitable material for radiocarbon dating. Short-lived organic matter is usually involved and, if 14C dating is applied to pieces that are stylistically well dated, a better understanding of 14C dating of this type of material can be gained. This study presents some examples of dating that support the stylistic dates. Repeated analyses illustrate the robustness of the standard treatment applied to the textiles.

This thesis investigates the potential of using terrestrial molluscs for radiocarbon dating of archaeological sediments. The sequence at the Haua Fteah, Cyrenaica, in Libya provides a case study. Two strands of study were undertaken as part of the ERC funded Cyrenaica Prehistory Project: the examination of the present day radiocarbon ecology of species in the region; and an analysis of archaeological shell from the Haua Fteah cave with the aim of developing a high-resolution chronology for the upper portions of the site. Concerning contemporary art, it is well known that one of the most important aspects is authentication and, as a consequence, identification of fakes. The rate of atmospheric formation of radiocarbon (C-14) was long considered to be relatively constant over time during the Holocene and late Pleistocene epoch. Because living tissue fixes carbon derived from the atmosphere, the result is a fairly constant proportion of radioactive C-14 to stable C-12 in living plants and animals. Using the measured half-life of C-14 (5,730 years), the approximate age of plant and animal tissue containing C-14 extending back as far as 30,000 ybp can be calculated. However, the C-14 dating technique is not as accurate as was once believed because it has been dis

The use of shells from terrestrial and freshwater molluscs for radiocarbon dating has in the past been viewed with scepticism or even dismissed entirely because the results are prone to distortion from post-depositional diagenesis, or the incorporation of material with a low 14C/12C ratio whilst the mollusc was alive, or both. The thesis attempts to discuss how the relative importance of the two factors can be assessed and the corresponding ages corrected accordingly. Diagenesis was studied by comparing the structure and chemical composition of 39 species of British molluscs from modern specim

Accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) has been used routinely for radiocarbon measurements for several years. During this period it has become evident neither the accuracy nor the range of the technique were as great as had originally been hoped. This thesis describes both theoretical work to understand the reasons for this and practical solutions to overcome some of the problems. The production and transport of the ions used in the measurements are found to be the most crucial stages in the process. The theories behind ion production by sputtering are discussed and applied to the specific case
