Full textWith the background in fall accidents as a significant public health issue, causing both individual suffering and a large social cost, the study examined product designers’ opportunities to create accessible, useful products worth using, for people over 65, who suffers from fear of falling (FHM, 2021). In a general comment to the UN’s sustainable development goal’s, the importance of practising Universal Design (UD) in design of all new products is clearly expressed (UN, 2013). With a globally ageing population and within a broad target group, it became central to explore how to reach a more common practice of UD in the industry of product design (WHO, 2018). The design process was supported by the principles of UD (Story, Mueller & Mace, 1998) combined with Emotional Design and Norman’s (2004) three levels of emotion. The study also included theories from gerontological research on the phenomenon of Fear of falling (FoF), which indicates that a higher level of FoF is expressed by people when it is put in relation to an activity (Lachman et al., 1998). The study’s empirics were mainly generated from the methods Questionnaire and Diary study, which showed a widespread strategy among users, to handle FoF through activity restriction. The activity to reach highly placed objects at home became central after the discovering that the participants often use other equipment and furnishing than a designated step stool. The study’s design proposal resulted in a step stool, which should not justify using a kitchen chair for the activity. The study contributes closing a knowledge gap, which can benefit the design industry with a visually tangible analysis result of both measurable and emotional value in a product.

Full textBackground: Cancer is a disease that 61,000 individuals suffer in Sweden each year. The number of survivors is greater due to early cancer detection. Being affected by cancer can be perceived as traumatic, which is why several people whom survived cancer, experience fear of cancer recurrence. Aim: The aim of this literature review was to explore experiences of living with fear of cancer recurrence. Method: A literature review of nine scientific articles according to the Friberg method. The results articles were taken from Academic Search Complete, Cinahl Complete and Nursing & Allied Health Database. Results: Fear of cancer recurrence can be seen as a phenomenon that causes suffering in the affected person, and affects areas of life negatively, physically, psychological and psychosocially. The literature review is presented in two themes. The first theme is Triggering Phenomena which deals with phenomena that increase fear. The second theme is Managing the Fear of Cancer Recurrence, which addresses how the fear affect the affected psychosocially and how the affected deal with life. Discussion: Cancer survivors are in a new life situation after the cancer treatment is complete, this can mean difficulties in managing life after cancer. The nurse needs to be aware that these patients not only appear in the oncological context but also in outpatient care. The findings of the literature review have been discussed on the basis of Roy's adaptation model

Full textThe aim of this study is to examine how assessors in gender assessment units inSweden think about assessment criteria for the diagnosis and treatment oftranssexuals. Previous studies in the area imply that transgender individuals areexcluded and left without health care due to a heteronormative perspective, foundboth in the interpretation and the implementation of the law. Previous research hasnot been based on empirical studies where the assessors have been interviewed inorder to ascertain how they implement the law. Rather, previous research has beenfounded solely on theory, which has then been applied to the gender assessment. Our study is based on qualitative interviews. The empirical material has beenanalyzed using social constructive concepts, and has been compared to theguidelines under which the assessors operate. Our result confirms much of theprevious research in the area, but we have also found that there are no clearanswers with regards to expectations and requirements placed on the transgenderindividual’s sex and gender during the gender assessment. Our researchdemonstrates that the assessors make an overall assessment; weighing variouscriteria against each other, and that at times certain criteria are given moreemphasis. The reasoning guiding this process is at times apparently contradictory. We argue that the assessors are open and tolerant with regards to variations of sexand gender expressions, as long as the transgender individuals remain within theindividual assessors understanding of what sex and gender is. We conclude that asthis understanding varies from one assessor to another, there is much room forflexibility in the interpretations.

Full textA major part of the Swedish population suffers from myocardial infarction. A wish in the study is to give nurses an increasing knowledge about what patients with myocardial infarction wish to be informed about so that the nurses can meet these patients as good as possible.
The aim is to show what nurses need to inform heart patients about to prevent anxiety and fear after hospital care.
The method used was literature reviews where seven articles were reviewed according to Polit, et. al., (2001). The databases used were Cinahl and ELIN.
Results: There is a dissonance between what the patient and what the nurse is ranking to be the most important item to be informed about after a myocardial infarction. The patients prioritize information about symptoms and lifestylechanges. The nurses prefer that support in the community is the most important effort to inform about.
Discussion: It has come to light what the patients want to have information about and what the nurses feel is important to inform about. It has not come to light if the information from the nurse reduces the patients anxiety and fear after their stay at the hospital.
Conclusion: It is important that the patient get a chance to have an active role in the information process and as much as possible get involved in the decision making on what information to give.

Full textFear of recurrence is a common issue among patients who have had cancer. It is important that the nurse has knowledge of how the fear of recurrence can affect healthin order to be able to support these patients in a satisfactory manner. The purpose of the literature study was to describe patients' experiences of the fear of recurrence after having cancer.Ten articles that matched the purpose of the study were reviewed and compiled. By condensing the content, the data processing revealed three categories that formed the result: Fear of recurrence is maintained by recurring reminders, fear of recurrence creates emotional and existential vulnerability andfear of recurrence affects the quality of life. In the results of the literature study, several factors were identified that triggered patients' fear of recurrence. These factors were follow-up visits, media, stories of other people's cancer and bodily changes. The result also showed patients' thoughts and feelings that gave them an emotional and existential vulnerability. The fear of recurrence greatly affected the patients' quality of life and had a negative impact on their health. It is of great importance that the nurse draws attention to factors in patients who can be associated with fear of recurrence and more research is needed on how the nurse can adequately support these patients.

Full textPrevious studies have shown that elite student athletes are experiencing high pressure to succeed in both their sports and their academic studies. At the same time, it has been found that these students experience less symptoms of depression and anxiety than the general population. Elite sports are therefore not considered to be a source of stress. The purpose of this paper was to examine the psychological well-being of elite student athletes, their fear of failure and self-regulated learning. The participants consisted of 189 elite student athletes between the ages of 16-19. The data was gathered for three years and is part of a research project on elite student athletes in the north of Sweden. The result shows a significant decrease in psychological well-being between the first and second year. It also shows that self-regulated learning and fear of failure can predict psychological well-being. Furthermore the result shows that fewer elite student athletes experience reduced psychological well-being than a general population. These results are in line with previous research and indicate that personal resources are of major importance to the psychological well-being due to the complex environment surrounding the elite student athletes. A qualitative study would be desirable to gain a deeper understanding of what further affects the psychological well-being of these students.

Full textABSTRACT Background Many children seek healthcare every year and it can be a place that is perceived as unknown. Medical procedures that include needles are common and also one of the most usual sources of pain, anxiety and fear. These feelings are individual and if children's healthcare fears are ignored, it can affect the children's well-being and future healthcare visits. Children's reactions and fear management are affected by children's maturity and development. Family is important and it is the family that children turn to for safety. As undergraduate nurses come into contact with children in healthcare, it is seen as valuable that they also have knowledge about children's healthcare fears. Aim The purpose was to shed light on nursing measures that can prevent and manage fear of healthcare in children. Method The method for the work was a non-systematic literature review where the authors used articles with quantitative and qualitative methods. Database searches were performed in CINAHL Complete and PubMed. In total, the results consist of 15 articles that were quality examined on the basis of Sophiahemmet's assessment data and the articles were analyzed through an integrated analysis method. Result The results of the literature review are presented in five categories that report children's perception and experiences of health care, which to varying degrees answer how nursing measures can be adapted to prevent and treat healthcare fears:Support coping strategies, Information, Distraction, Facilitate emotion management and Attention to the presence of parents Conclusion The results show that children demand and are in need of distraction, information and teaching in self-management to more easily deal with pain, anxiety and fears. The results also show that children need to feel safe and many children want a parent present to experience that feeling, which emphasizes the need to use family-focused care. The nursing measures as described in the results are a mixture of technical aids, music and play, with the aim of informing, preparing and distracting children. With the support of nursing measures that children prefer, nurses can prevent and treat healthcare fears and make it easier for children to feel secure.

Full textBackground: Fear of needles among children is a problem in society. Pain is a dynamic experience that can be difficult for children to communicate. Lack of communication and nursing from the nurse can aggravate the fear of needles and the pain. Aim: The aim was to describe the nurse's measures to prevent procedural pain in children in a care that includes needles. Method: The study is a general literature study with an inductive approach. Eleven articles form the basis for the result. Results: The results were divided into four themes: The relationship between fear and pain, Nursing measures before the needle procedure, Nursing measures during the needle procedure and Nursing measures after the needle procedure. The nurse's nursing measures begin with providing information. Furthermore, distraction measures are important and finally to strengthen and praise the child after the procedure. These measures are important for the child to feel safe, security reduces fear, which in turn reduces pain. Conclusion: Something that proved important from the results of the literature study was to secure and strengthen the child throughout the procedure. Security contributes to reduced fear, which in turn reduces pain. Therefore, security is of great importance in nursing.

Full textFear of failure (FF) has a negative impact on individuals' motivation, choice of occupation, ability to work and general well-being and can occur when people make different decisions. Our study was designed to investigate whether fear of failure can be explained by personality and whether there were other factors of influence such as socioeconomic status, age and sex. A quantitative method was used, and data collection was conducted via a web-based survey containing 62 questions. The participants in the study (N = 153) consisted of 115 women (75%) and 38 men (25%). IPIP-30 was used to measure personality and the Performance Failure Appraisal Inventory (PFAI) was used to measure fear of failure. The result showed in regression analysis a very strong statistically significant relationship (r = .69) between fear of failure and the personality factor neuroticism, and that it could explain ≈ 53% of the variance in fear of failure. The result was surprisingly strong and clear and showed convincingly that personality explained a large part of the content of the term called "fear of failure". Our conclusion is therefore that fear of failure as a concept, together with the associated measuring instrument (PFAI scale) becomes superfluous and can instead be replaced by the personality in the five-factor model.

Full textPrevious studies has shown that students at elite high school’s with dual careers are under a lot of pressure to perform in both their sports and academic studies. Self-compassion has been linked to positive outcomes in sports and it involves being supportive rather than critical and judgmental towards oneself. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between self-compassion, fear of failure, mental health and achievement goals and if these factors can predict psychological well-being. The study consisted of 97 elite high school students, 16-19 years old. The results shows that self-compassion is associated with all the factors and that self-compassion and Mastery-goals can predict psychological well-being. This indicates that it may be important to practice self-compassion to enhance mental health. Longitudinal studies is desirable to follow the development of youth elite athletes over a longer period of time.

The aim with the study was to describe non pharmacologic methods in order to reduce children's dread and pain before cancer related treatments and surveys. The study was implemented as a literature study with descriptive design. In the study 21 scientific articles was analyzed for the result. The result showed that distraction was the most common non pharmacologic method in order to decrease children's dread and pain before painful cancer related treatments and surveys. Distraction in the form of communication, touch and accessibility distract, reassuring, increases pain tolerance, improve care results and provides positive care experience. Children who elect distracters funds showed less fear, pain and discomfort at painful treatments and surveys. As distraction was communication, contact, electronic toys, soft soap bubbles, clowns, virtual reality, films, musical and kaleidoscope used. Cognitive behavior therapy (KBT) was found to help children to handle the dread before treatments. Hypnos showed to be useful to cautious and anxious children with earlier care experience stem to submit safety and to prevent anxiety. The authors drew the conclusion that communication, age adequate distraction and human presence is a cheap and effective complements for the nurse to reduce children's pain and dread during painful procedures. Further research within the area is needed in order to evaluate the nurses' knowledge about communication and distraction.

Full textThe paradox is clear: elderly have the highest fear of crime even though they have the lowest risk to actually get exposed to crime. Especially women report high fear of crime. This study aims to explore the affect of trait anxiety and social relationships on fear of crime. The problem statement is: what affect has trait anxiety and social networks on fear of crime among older women? The result of this study found a positive association between anxiety and fear of crime. Social network had also an positive affect on fear of crime. The conclusion of this study is that there is a association between fear of crime and anxiety but that anxiety is more frequent. More studies on the association between social network and fear of crime needs to be made.

Full textThe life of elite high school students involves dual careers with demands in both the academic and sports field. Proneness to shame and fear of failure are related to performance and to mental illness. The purpose of this cross sectional study was to examine how these variables correlate and how well proneness to shame and fear of failure could predict mental illness after controlling for gender effects. The study consisted of 149 elite high school students. In line with expectations proneness to shame, fear of failure and mental illness had a positive correlation. Results indicate that mental illness of elite high school students increase as proneness to shame and fear of failure increase. Fear of failure could significantly predict mental illness. More studies in this area are necessary to clarify how proneness to shame, fear of failure and mental illness are related.

Full textElderly people's fear of becoming a victim of crime is a relatively unexplored area. Current research on elderly people’s fear is compiled by statistics on how many elderly people who feel fear. A narrative perspective where one highlights what the elderly people have to say about their experience for fear of becoming a victim of crime is missing. The purpose of this study is to analyze what elderly people have to say about the phenomenon “fear of becoming a victim of crime” and ascertain how it looks and how it affects their everyday life. The study has a phenomenological approach with life-world theory as a starting point. The data collection was made through open interviews. The results show that the phenomenon “elderly peoples fear of becoming a victim of crime” proves to be a risk analytical conscious. This is shown in the following constituents: (i) to develop strategies for eventual exploitation of crime, (ii) the experience of anxiety, (iii) the experience of fear, (iv) rational thinking about crimes and (v) the previous experience of victimization. These constituents are forming the phenomenon, which in turn is the experience that is reflected in the informant’s life worlds. The knowledge this study contributes with can be used for continued work with prevention of crimes related to the elderly and to make their sense of their lives safer.

Full textThe present study examined gender differences in fear of violent crime based on news media reporting about violent crime, and also differences between men and women in what forms of news media that created the most fear of violent crimes. The various forms of news media that were examined included TV, newspaper, radio and internet. A questionnaire was answered by a total of 178 people, consisting of students of Örebro University which consisted men (n=84) and women (n=94). The result showed that women had a significantly higher fear than men of violent crime based on news media reporting about violent crime. Internet was the forms of news media that both men and women consumed the most, and created the most fear of crime according to the respondent’s emotional expressions. TV was the form of news media that to a large extent led to the respondents turning their fear of violent crime in practice through behavioural change. Finally, it was concluded that gender was the strongest predictor for fear of violent crime. The study highlights the problem of women’s higher fear of violent crime, and through the knowledge of news media as a contributing cause, safety-promoting work can be developed.
