Abstract:
This thesis investigates the origins and behaviour of the non-canonical morphological phenomenon of heteroclisis in the verb paradigms of Latin and the Romance languages. Heteroclisis is the coexistence, within a single paradigm, of forms which pattern according to different inflectional classes existing otherwise in the language: a heteroclite lexeme can thus be seen as 'mixed' or 'undecided' as to its inflectional identity. I begin by examining the development of the theoretical concept of heteroclisis and approaches to the idea of inflectional class in general, before situating heteroclisis in typological space in comparison with better-known instances of non-canonical morphology such as deponency and suppletion; heteroclisis exists at a different level of generalization from these, because its identification presupposes the existence of inflectional classes, themselves generalizations over the behaviour of individual lexemes. I also consider two recent theoretical treatments of the phenomenon and survey recent linguistic studies making use of the notion. I then look at the synchronic and diachronic behaviour of heteroclisis in Latin and Romance verbs: the great time depth of our attestations of these languages gives us the chance to witness the development of successive examples of heteroclisis, and their subsequent treatment within the morphological system, in the history of a single family. Focusing chiefly on data from Latin, Romanian and Romansh, I find that the principal (though not the only) source for new instances of heteroclisis in Latin/Romance lies in regular sound change, and find that speakers can treat these synchronically anomalous patterns as robust models of inflectional behaviour to be extended over the lexicon or brought into line with pre-existing types of paradigm-internal alternation. These findings concur with previous demonstrations that speakers make use of non-canonical phenomena as markers of the internal structure of inflectional paradigms.

Abstract:
Once upon a language… as part of the unfair circumstances that are brought upon a language, Corsican was very often mistaken as a patois. Over the past century it had to resist varied attempts designed to eliminate it. This unfortunate situation was due to converging factors such as; the disappearance of an advantageous cocoon offered by the Italian world, the development of French monolingual language policy, sociopolitical language preferences inherent to a language in a low position in a diglossic system which resulted in the lowering of the user’s perception of the language’s status; and the amplification of these factors by the devastating effects of time, decreased usage, and the exclusion of Corsican from the domain of education. In a time where multiple language skills are regarded as a key skill to access the European Union and subsequently the world, Corsican has the potential to occupy a privileged position if its perception manages to shift from mere dialect to a tool for intercomprehension and plurilinguism. This research explores the positions of the Corsican language in its local and global contexts and the relationship (which we will define as Intramovements and Intermovements) and perception that Corsican speakers have of these positions. The study traces the early emergence of language on the island, to the arrival of Latin, to the slow and then abrupt shift from being ensconced in the Italian world to being the object of oppressive French linguistic policy, which resulted in deterioration in status. At the same time, the historical survey demonstrates how Corsican has always been anchored as a language in the romance world. The research then turns to the position of the Corsican language in the contemporary education system and how it has the potential to serve as a bridge to the romance language world and to become a language representing Corsican ‘openmindedness’ in the future. Finally, the thesis raises the question of whether the practice of the Corsican language by the islanders is a “natural” element in the bilingual toolkit for intercomprehension with other romance languages, especially Italian. We will see that Italy, its language and culture, have acquired a special status in the eye of the islanders, sometimes loved for the strength it represents and sometimes loathed due to fear of a process labeled Gabbanization

Piñar, Larrubia Pilar. "Negative polarity licensing and negative concord in the Romance languages." Diss., The University of Arizona, 1996. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/187478.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to contribute to the investigation of the semantics and syntax of Negative Words (N-words) in negative concord languages, with a focus on Spanish. An in-depth look into the syntactic behavior as well as into the meaning of terms such as nadie 'nobody', nada 'nothing', nunca 'never', etc., will provide some insight into the controversial nature of these words in the Romance languages as well as a better understanding of their peculiar pattern of distribution. On a larger picture, a thorough investigation of the semantics and syntax of these items will, in turn, contribute to a better understanding of the nature of negative polarity items in general. Thus, as I just anticipated, my conclusion is that N-words are in fact equivalent to negative polarity items, and that the phenomenon of negative concord, by which, in some languages, various negative items contribute only one semantic negation to a sentence, is a subcase of the crosslinguistic phenomenon of negative polarity licensing. In this respect, my analysis of N-words builds on the analyses of Bosque (1980) and Laka (1990). I base my conclusion that N-words are negative polarity items upon an extensive survey of comparative data coming from different Romance languages as well as from English, and I bring up new data and arguments supporting my view on the issue. In addition to arguing for the negative polarity nature of N-words, I also explore the extent to which syntactic operations are involved in the licensing of N-words, and I provide evidence showing that N-word licensing does not directly involve syntactic movement (contra most standard assumptions). Finally, in my investigation of the nature of N-words, I go beyond simply identifying them as negative polarity items. Specifically, I look deeply into the logicosemantic contribution of N-words, and I present arguments and data showing that N-words do not have either negative or any other kind of quantificational force. Rather, as I argue, they are better characterized as logicosemantic variables (in the sense of Kamp 1981 and Heim 1982.) In this regard, I depart from Bosque's (1980) and Laka's (1990) characterization of N-words. My view is more radical than theirs in that I do not just claim that N-words do not have inherent negative content, but also that they do not have any quantificational force of their own at all.

Reeve, Daniel James. "Romance and the literature of religious instruction, c.1170-c.1330." Thesis, University of Oxford, 2014. http://ora.ox.ac.uk/objects/uuid:00ff0d43-6ace-49e2-a80f-cf5b6c9553fc.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis investigates the relations between romance and texts of religious instruction in England between c.1170–c.1330, taking as its principal textual corpus the exceptionally rich literary traditions of insular French romance and religious writing that subsist during this period. It argues that romance is a mode which engages closely with religious and ethical questions from a very early stage, and demonstrates the discourses of opposition in which both kinds of text participate throughout the period. The thesis offers substantial readings of a number of neglected insular French religious texts of the thirteenth century, including Robert Grosseteste's Chasteau d'Amour, John of Howden's Rossignos, and Robert of Gretham's Miroir, alongside new readings of romances such as Gui de Warewic and Ipomedon. This juxtaposition of romance narrative and religious instruction sheds new light onto both kinds of text: romance emerges as a mode with deep-rooted didactic qualities; insular French religious literature is shown to be intensely concerned with the need to compete with romance’s entertaining appeal in literary culture. This oppositional discourse profoundly affects the form of instructional writing and romance alike. The discussion of the interactions between insular French romance and instructional literature presented here also serves as a new pre-history of Middle English romance. The final chapter of the thesis offers several new readings of texts from the Auchinleck manuscript, including the canonical romance Sir Orfeo and the neglected, puzzling Speculum Gy de Warewyk. These readings demonstrate that fourteenthcentury romance intelligently adapts the material it inherits from Francophone literature to a new cultural situation. In these acts of reformation, Middle English romance reveals itself as a discursive space capable of accommodating a wide range of ethical and ideological affiliations; the complex negotiations between romance and instructional literature in the preceding centuries are an important cultural condition for this widening of possibilities.

Berchtold, Elisabeth.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of this thesis is to fill in the scientific gaps concerning the knowledge of the history of Francoprovençal and its vocabulary. Currently, there is no synthesis of the available documentation of Old Francoprovençal. In the Französisches Etymologisches Wörterbuch (FEW), that could fulfil this function, the older states of Francoprovençal are underrepresented because of the lack of this kind of work. The consequence is a huge imbalance with the knowledge we have for instance of Old French and Occitan which are the best known Romance languages of the past. There are few sources in Francoprovençal because this language has always been mostly oral. The oldest literature consists of a few religious texts and a legal treaty. Most of them are translations. From the 16th century onward, a locally based literature emerges generally with modest ambitions. Authors wanting to reach a larger audience chose French at a very early stage. The documentary sources are more numerous but very unevenly spread. Most sources from the French part are edited, but many of them lack a glossary and are difficult to handle. The situation is better in Switzerland, where the Glossaire des patois de la Suisse romande (Gl.) provides documentation not only regarding the modern dialects but also their older stages. For this reason, we concentrated our work on the French part and relied on the Gl. for the Swiss part. Together with an other PhD student, Laure Grüner, we gathered the sources and extracted the interesting lexical forms.Based on this documentation, we elaborated a lexicographical description template suitable for Old Francoprovençal. We wrote the articles of this Dictionnaire de l'ancien francoprovençal beginning with the letter f which represents about one twentieth of the whole dictionary. Not only did this provide a proof of its feasibility, but it also assessed its contribution to the knowledge on Old Francoprovençal. More than a half of the articles gather evidence for lexical units not yet documented in this language regarding the French part of the linguistic area, whereas for most of the others we could complete the existing documentation. Based on the 386 articles written, we estimate the complete nomenclature at approximately 7’500 articles and the time needed to write them at about twelve years. We also considered various possibilities to get tangible outcomes in a shorter amount of time

Jean-Jacques Rousseau, despite living in the 18th century, it is different from their contemporaries by not look with optimism that the Enlightenment, considered the centuries of Lights, brought to society. As for the intellectual community the society came to an apex of moral progress and scientific developments with the Enlightenment Having as basic principle the reason, continuing the movement started by the Renaissance, that is, to use the rational knowledge against ignorance, superstition and belief. Rousseau says in his work entitled The Discourse on the sciences and the arts that science, the arts and letters alienate man from his natural state, and stifle their freedom. However, soon the philosopher is accused of contradiction, because even cursing the letters, launches the novel Julia or the New Heloise under the pretext of writing it with the end moral of protecting the readers of a society corrupted. The critique of the Rousseau was also for another reason: the novel was seen as a narrative frivolous and immoral because it is a tale of fiction, and as contrary to the rational order and the canons Aristotelian. In this way, it was necessary to analyze the emergence and the rise of the narrative romance within a cultural landscape and epistemological in contrast to classical aesthetics. Next, we investigated the entry and the originality of Rousseau in romanticism and the fracture with the classical aesthetic. Subsequently, we trace the trajectory of humanity corrupted by Rousseau in the discourse on the origin and the inequality between men, as well as the trajectory of the history of language until the language in the essay on the origin of languages, these two concepts of philosophy rousseauniana. And, finally, we tried to investigate the alleged paradox of Rousseau, like him, a critic of the letters, also be a writer of romance, and with the moral justification to retain people.

Abstract:
The Italian romance epic of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, with its multitude of characters, complex plots, and roots in medieval Carolingian and Arthurian chivalric romances, was a form popular with courtly and urban audiences. In the hands of writers such as Boiardo, Ariosto, and Tasso, works of remarkable sophistication that combined high seriousness and low comedy were created. Their works went on to influence Cervantes, Milton, Ronsard, Shakespeare, and Spenser. In this volume, instructors will find ideas for teaching the Italian Renaissance romance epic along with its adaptations in film, theater, visual art, and music. An extensive resources section locates primary texts online and lists critical studies, anthologies, and reference works.

Abstract:
We look into the Brazilian contemporary novel in a social and historical way in this thesis. The paper starts with the discussions about the nature of the genre, passing by its changes along the western history, until reaches the Brazilian novel. Thereafter, we look for understanding the rise of the novel in Brazil to lead our analysis to the contemporary Brazilian novel produced in the last two decades. Finally, we made an analysis of the novels Relato de um certo Oriente (1989), by Milton Hatoum; Eles eram muitos cavalos (2001), by Luiz Ruffato; and Lorde (2004), by João Gilberto Noll, in order to explore three different literary ways linked to time, space and language. We also analyze the relations between novel and modernity, as well as its representation in the Brazilian contemporary novel. Among the different authors used in the studies about theory and history of the novel are Georg Lukács, Walter Benjamin, Ferenc Fehér, Lucien Goldmann, Mikhail Bakhtin, Erich Auerbach, Ian Watt, Marthe Robert, Franco Moretti, Arnold Hauser and others.

Full text
Abstract:
The translations of Tasso’s Gerusalemme liberata by Richard Carew (1594) and Edward Fairfax (1600) import the hybrid genre of the Italian romance epic into the evolving literary polysystem of the English Renaissance. These two significant translations present an intriguing struggle between fidelity to the source text and freedom, which mirrors the friction between epic and romance at the heart of the Gerusalemme liberata. This friction takes shape most clearly in the treatment of the power dynamics of the crusaders vis-à-vis Godfrey and in the translation of the ‘forma altera’ of Armida. While Carew attempts an ‘epic’ translation conforming to the source text, creating a Gerusalemme conquistata-type of translation, Fairfax submits to the allure of Armida and to the romance of translator errancy. To translate this unique hybrid genre is to encounter translation’s process double; in a fundamental sense, translation is romance, and the romance epic is translation.

But the figure of Fanon often remains both abstract and plural within its articulations - interpretations of his body of work performing sometimes only partial allegiances to the whole. This means that centralising a Fanon within political discourse stands to reproduce the losses implicated in his mythification, rather than to recover new critical imports in his work. In other words, the simplification of Fanonist rhetoric fails to deal with the "un-political" dimensions of Fanon. As such the more troubling of Fanon's work, namely Black Skin, White Masks (1952), is often left un-interrogated, while The Wretched of the Earth (1961) is read like a manifesto for purposive change. Black Skin, White Masks it seems is deemed "not radical enough" because of what appears to be a problematic preoccupation with 'love and understanding.' In the following intervention, I argue that what makes this centrality of 'love and understanding' so unpalatable to radical activists is a misappropriation of Fanon's formulation of desire. This is in part, I believe, one of the flaws of Fanon setting up the dynamic of racialised desire within cisgender, heteronormative models for potential interracial relationships - "The Woman of Colour and the White Man" and "The Man of Colour and the White Woman." Hence, I consider what queering these relationships does to the way in which we read the political dimensions of Black Skin, White Masks, and whether or not this allays the allegory of revolutionary solidarity of the generic teleology of the heteronormative romance. The object of this thesis is to elucidate what possibilities for political solidarity are generated through the queered dynamic of interracial love, explored in the literature of the contemporary African diaspora. New African writers take seriously what Fanon recognised as "The Pitfalls of National Consciousness," by emptying out the category of the nation and engaging with the intersections of a trans-national, trans-gender and trans-racial politics. To demonstrate the ways in which a queer analysis of interracial romance might reimagine a raced identity politics, I analyse novels produced by members of the contemporary African diaspora, whose works deal with mixed race identity. Through my reading of Helen Oyeyemi's The Icarus Girl (2005) and Boy, Snow, Bird (2014), Yewande Omotoso's Bom Boy (2011), and Chris Abani's The Secret History of Las Vegas (2014), I hope to demonstrate that contemporary African literature is concerned with the formation of an identity that estranges the category of blackness from itself through its entanglement with a queer identity politics.

The purpose of the research is to analyze the novel O dono do mar, by José Sarney (1995), observing the construction of the role Antão Cristório, in his relationship with the other roles and the context they are in. The constitution of the subject observed as a being of language is used as the starting point of the analysis. The subject that uses the discourse, the typical hero attitude and the reaction before several observed situations. They way how the subjects are and relate to others during the story, considering the identity represented by the protagonist, his relationship with the other roles and his values that lead the revealed beliefs and behaviors are observed. The elements that guide the relationship between the role and his space are analyzed, and lastly the images and the representative symbols of the imaginary manifestations that are the literary fiction and what they represent in the constitution of the protagonist are identified.

Fulton, Joseph Michael. "Counter-Reformation politics and the Inquisition in the works of Fray Luis de Leon." Diss., The University of Arizona, 1999. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/283926.

Abstract:
Fray Luis de Leon was incarcerated for nearly five years by the Spanish Inquisition, on the basis of charges brought against him by antagonistic colleagues who disagreed with his scholarly approach. Through a systematic consideration of his writings in light of the sociohistorical climate that gave rise to disputes between him and his detractors, it is evident that a number of themes run through Fray Luis' prose production which can be related directly to his experience as an inmate in the Inquisition's cells. These topoi, found throughout the Salmantine friar's prose, are present also in his poetry. Therefore, by analyzing those prose passages that have a direct bearing on his trial before the Inquisition and by relating those passages to his poetry, we shall gain access to unique avenues of interpretation. The results will offer new insights into Fray Luis' poetry that are not readily apparent through other methods of analysis. This study will afford us an opportunity to see Fray Luis and his works in great detail from a perspective that has not yet been explored.

Full text
Abstract:

Abstract:

Blake, Thomas Hughes Jr. "Royal materials: the object of queens in Late Medieval English romance." Diss., University of Iowa, 2014. https://ir.uiowa.edu/etd/5717.

Full text
Abstract:
As historicist as it is materialist, my dissertation both reads the fictional queens portrayed in romance against the fraught positioning of historical queens such as Isabella of France, Anne of Bohemia and Margaret of Anjou, and traces the ambivalent function in late medieval English society of objects including the sacring-bell, the Lollard bible and the royal sword. Merging the traditionally historicist field queenship studies with typically postmodern fields like thing theory and sound theory, I investigate how queens in late medieval romances coopt, queer and reconfigure material objects of masculine power. Each chapter examines a literary queen typically dismissed by subject-oriented ontologies as insubstantial. Analyzing romances that include Richard Coer de Lyon, Chaucer's Man of Law's Tale, Malory's Morte D'Arthur and the Marian romance of "The Child Slain by Jews" from the Vernon Manuscript, I argue for the overlooked significance of literary queens as figures whose circulation illuminates the construction of medieval masculinities. Through contact with charged material objects that are pivotal to romance plots, queens query patriarchal materials, exposing their underlying "thingness" and malleability. Whether tracking the disturbing afterlife of a church bell used to exorcise the hero's queen mother in Richard Coer de Lyon, or analyzing links between the "Britoun book" that rescues Chaucer's Custance and Anne of Bohemia's vernacular books, my chapters tell a new story about the foreign queens of late medieval English romances by showing how they blur boundaries between male and female, subject and object, West and East, priest and parish, Christian and Jew, orthodox and heterodox, mother and child.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is a study of the fifteenth- and sixteenth-century manuscript and print contexts of Older Scots romance. Building on recent developments in Middle English romance scholarship and Older Scots book history, it seeks to contextualise the surviving corpus of Older Scots romances in light of their unique material witnesses and contemporary cultural milieu. Chapters 1 to 8 focus respectively on the following Older Scots romances: the Octosyllabic Alexander, the Buik of King Alexander the Conquerour, Florimond, Lancelot of the Laik, King Orphius and Sir Colling, Golagros and Gawane and Rauf Coilyear, the Scottish Troy Book, and Clariodus. The conclusion assesses and evaluates the most significant and recurring features of these chapters and reveals how they cumulatively deepen our understanding of the book-producing and book-owning culture of fifteenth- and sixteenth-century Scotland. The conclusion also looks forward to new witness- conscious editions of Older Scots romance that endeavour to represent as far as possible a text’s unique and idiosyncratic manuscript and print contexts. In each chapter I examine the set romance’s primary contexts of composition, including authorship, date, and first audience, as well as its secondary publication contexts. A full palaeographical, codicological and bibliographical description of each manuscript and print is provided, with details of when, where and by whom each witness was produced. Information about when and where that witness was read is also given, with details of the owners and readers where known. Significant attention is paid to the use of titles, rubrication and mise-en-page to reveal the trends and bibliographical codes in copying and presentation. Where appropriate, the compilation choices made by scribes and readers are also analysed. Careful assessments of these are shown to aid modern thematic and comparative literary interpretation. Most notably, each chapter of this thesis also provides much-needed new information about fifteenth- and sixteenth-century Scottish literary communities. Several significant and often-overlapping circles of scribes, readers and owners are revealed. The familial, professional and geographical associations between these groups of producers and consumers are traced and consequently new book- publishing and book-owning networks are documented. In further original work, a number of hitherto unknown texts, scribes and readers are also successfully identified.

Toscano, Angela Rose. "Resemblances: on the re-use of romance in three 18th-century novels." Diss., University of Iowa, 2018. https://ir.uiowa.edu/etd/6512.

Full text
Abstract:
This study examines three 18th-century novels and their connection to the romances of the 17th century, the middle ages, as well as the Greek romances that flourished during the Roman Empire. I argue that the novel and the romance differ, not because the novel possesses some intrinsic formal, structural, or thematic essence wholly and disjunctively different from the romance, but rather because the two forms have been arbitrarily differentiated over a long contentious history for ideological and not categorical reasons. Thus, I define the novel not as a form or a genre, but as a mode and medium—a way and means of expressing story rather than as a structural, shaping category of story. Romance, on the other hand, is a type of story particularly interested in how to deal with difference. It asks: How do I deal with difference without annihilating or exiling it or myself in the process? When the romance gets subsumed into the novel as the dominant mode of prose fiction, it re-inscribes this ethical aspect of the romance’s structure through the use of resembling conventions and tropes. In analyzing how resemblances are treated in three 18th-century novels—Charlotte Lennox’s The Female Quixote, Sophia Lee’s The Recess, and Eliza Haywood’s Love in Excess—my dissertation focuses on the novel’s re-use of the romance to explore anxieties about difference and sameness, about moral issues related to personhood, and about the tension between the individual and the collective. These texts ask: How do we cope with and incorporate the difference of the other when privilege in rank and perception is assumed by the subjective self? This question informs familiar and social relations of all kinds. It illuminates the 18th century’s scientific assumption that reality can be dissected via objective observation. It influences views of aesthetics, of gender and sexual politics, of creativity and the conflation of originality with novelty and of repetition with derivativeness.

Their novels reveal ambivalences about and conflicts between feminism and maternalism, heroic and bourgeois versions of the romance genre, and bourgeois imperialism and the representation of feminine sexuality.

The main concern of this research is to understand in which way the present elements in the costume in a television scene perform the characterization of the presence mode of the narrative actants. In parallel, the research evaluates, by its elements, how the enunciator conveys to the public what it knows, can, does and feels a character and the context that it lives; the ways in which the dressed body makes be, does, knows, can and makes feel the actants in scene, the narrative whole and the present arrangements present in the clothing and the body to develop itself in the visibility and identity construction axis of the actants. It has been selected as a study object the television miniseries A Pedra do Reino having as main focus the construction of sense of the protagonist and the operator subject of the central action of the narrative, Pedro Dinis Quaderna; of the characters Clemente e Samuel, that act as modalizer subjects and that approach the national and political and social conflicts of the time; and the characters Dona Margarida and Maria Safira, members of a love triangle with Quaderna. With this corpus it has been tested and comproves in this dissertation that the costume represents not only a secondary choice or an ornament, but one of the pullars in the enunciator construction and its style, which is turned in its organization to the enunciater, allowing it the apprehension and the intelligibility of the meaning that is taken to construction. This development had as theoretical and methodological framework of the socio-semiotics in the treatments of the schemes of visibility of these actants whose costumes are the regent of their presence modes in the narrative plot, qualifying them by the different distinct media languages in syncretic articulation, that our study must describe and analyze. It has been evidenced that the investments in costumes that are more and more expressive in Brazilian television attest to the TV search in narrative productions of higher aesthetic quality that we have pointed, is not without consequence in the public formation. A Pedra no Reino as audiovisual experiment proposes an stimulation in the breeding of new aesthetic patterns

This paper analyses the translation methods used in translating a colloquial, culture-specific text containing allusions and informal language. The analysis focuses on the difficulties arising in the translation of culture-specific phenomena and aspects such as slang and cultural references as well as allusions and language play. The theoretical framework used for structuring the analysis is supported by the theories of Newmark (1988), Nida (1964), Schröter (2005), Reiss (1989), Pym (2010) and Leppihalme (1994), among others. The results indicate that the translation of culturally and connotatively charged words require knowledge and understanding of languages and cultures alike. Further, the results indicate that concept of a word or concept being ‘untranslatable’ may originate from such lack of understanding or knowledge and that further research on the subject is needed.

Abstract:
This study examines Algernon Charles Swinburne’s work as a critic and creator of prose fiction, arguing that it deserves to play a larger role than it has done hitherto in our understanding of him as a writer. It considers a wide range of Swinburne’s prose, situating it in the intellectual movements of his time, and identifying recurrent themes and interests. Finally, it makes a case for a broader view of Swinburne that includes his literary criticism and imaginative prose. The first chapter discusses Swinburne’s prescient criticism of the Brontës and his suggestion that the novel ought to aspire to the status of high art. The second chapter reviews Swinburne’s assessment of Wilkie Collins, which uses the language of the stage to draw comparisons between sensation fiction and drama. Turning to Swinburne’s continental European influences, the third chapter establishes Baudelaire and Hugo as inspirations for Swinburne’s theory of aesthetic practice, though neither directly shaped his serious prose fiction. Gautier’s Mademoiselle de Maupin, which had a much more direct impact through its promotion of sexual and aesthetic autonomy, is discussed in Chapter Four. The fifth chapter studies Boccaccio and The Decameron as a significant source for Swinburne’s proposed Triameron and its surviving short stories. The sixth and seventh chapters focus on Laclos and Balzac, arguably the greatest influences on Swinburne’s novels. Laclos’s epistolary fiction and Balzac’s cycle of interlocking tales are immensely important for Swinburne’s theory of the novel and for his novels themselves. Chapter Eight is an extended study of Swinburne’s novel A Year’s Letters, which displays innovative epistolary form and incisive character studies. Chapter Nine interrogates Lesbia Brandon as a meditation on the youth of a poet and an avant-garde example of Swinburne’s hybrid, poetic prose.

Abstract:

This dissertation examines the Spanish visual poetry of the 1960s and 1970s, which appeared during the later period of the Franco regime and responded to the rise of mass media and consumer capitalism. It draws on the theoretical work of Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari to examine how this poetry created an oppositional practice that destabilized the conventional use of codes in media, art, and literature. It brings to light what I will explore as the "schizoid" character of their work and how it redefines the roles of reader, writer, and text in order to create an awareness that is critical and resistant to what the visual poets position as authoritative discourses, such as capitalism, consumerism, and the authoritarianism of the dictatorship. They see these discourses as subjugating the individual's thought through codes of language and image, and they go about subverting such discourses by destabilizing the language and image itself on which those discourses are built.

This study focuses on the representative works of three different writers, Quizás Brigitte Bardot venga a tomar una copa esta noche by Alfonso López Gradolí, La caída del avión en el terreno baldío by José Luis Castillejo, and Textos y antitextos by Fernando Millán. López Gradolí's book restructures the notion of desire as it is represented in capitalist narratives of lack, ultimately schizophrenizing desire as a displaced logic of lack and creating new, interpersonal codes that redefine desire as immanent connection. Castillejo's work deconstructs representation through open-ended texts that multiply possible reading strategies, thus grounding desire in the process of building new codes. Millán's book deconstructs representation into a figural narrative that redefines the reader's role from that of a passive consumer to that of an active schizoanalyst that co-creates poetic codes and schizophrenizes transcendental structures that govern language and image.

Abstract:

Abstract:

In less than a decade since the onset of the global economic crisis, more than 2 million people have left Spain in search of work and the possibility of a livable existence. Many of these economic exiles are young and highly qualified, leading some to classify this exodus as a brain drain. Lingering labor market instability and growing mistrust in Spain’s political system portend a challenging future for members of the so-called “lost generation,” both at home and abroad. Meanwhile, many questions remain about the lasting effects and repercussions of the crisis and massive departure of young Spaniards.

In response, the recession and ensuing surge in emigration have been popular themes of economic, demographic and sociological research in recent years; however, the cultural productions representative of this group remain relatively unstudied. The current investigation focuses on a selection of documentary films and fictional literature that portray the experiences of these highly qualified migrants. Through close analysis of these works, narrative patterns and trends appeared. These literary and audiovisual texts manifest the dialectical tensions of exile literature theorized by Sophia McClennen as well as the complex nostalgias of Svetlana Boym. They also reject and redefine the generational terms imposed upon them, express diasporic solidarity and call for political involvement and collective action. The rhetorical undercurrents at work in these constructions of individual and group identity suggest the emergence of an archetypal narrative of the new Spanish migrant. The cultural negotiations implicit in this narrative seem to confirm that sweeping but gradual societal changes are taking effect, even beyond Spain's borders.

Abstract:
The translation and transmission of the Italian romance epics of Boiardo, Ariosto, and Tasso across linguistic and cultural boundaries also included genre reprocessing. This paper traces how Elizabethan translators and compilers of these texts tended to read epic lyrically, or to read the lyric into (and out of) the epic. For Elizabethan translators of the Italian Romance Epic—Sir John Harington, Edward Fairfax, and Robert Tofte, for example—this transmutation meant amplification or insertion of lyrical material, such as Fairfax’s enhancement of the Petrarchan subtext of the Armida Blazon in Book 4 of Gerusalemme Liberata and Robert Tofte’s injection of his own Petrarchan mistress Alba into Boiardo’s Orlando Innamorato. Another trend, demonstrated by Robert Allott’s English verse anthology Englands Parnassus (1600), involved extracting lyrical fragments from the romance epic that function as stand-alone poems.
