Full textOnce upon a language… as part of the unfair circumstances that are brought upon a language, Corsican was very often mistaken as a patois. Over the past century it had to resist varied attempts designed to eliminate it. This unfortunate situation was due to converging factors such as; the disappearance of an advantageous cocoon offered by the Italian world, the development of French monolingual language policy, sociopolitical language preferences inherent to a language in a low position in a diglossic system which resulted in the lowering of the user’s perception of the language’s status; and the amplification of these factors by the devastating effects of time, decreased usage, and the exclusion of Corsican from the domain of education. In a time where multiple language skills are regarded as a key skill to access the European Union and subsequently the world, Corsican has the potential to occupy a privileged position if its perception manages to shift from mere dialect to a tool for intercomprehension and plurilinguism. This research explores the positions of the Corsican language in its local and global contexts and the relationship (which we will define as Intramovements and Intermovements) and perception that Corsican speakers have of these positions. The study traces the early emergence of language on the island, to the arrival of Latin, to the slow and then abrupt shift from being ensconced in the Italian world to being the object of oppressive French linguistic policy, which resulted in deterioration in status. At the same time, the historical survey demonstrates how Corsican has always been anchored as a language in the romance world. The research then turns to the position of the Corsican language in the contemporary education system and how it has the potential to serve as a bridge to the romance language world and to become a language representing Corsican ‘openmindedness’ in the future. Finally, the thesis raises the question of whether the practice of the Corsican language by the islanders is a “natural” element in the bilingual toolkit for intercomprehension with other romance languages, especially Italian. We will see that Italy, its language and culture, have acquired a special status in the eye of the islanders, sometimes loved for the strength it represents and sometimes loathed due to fear of a process labeled Gabbanization

Full textThis dissertation deals with the syntax of right dislocation (RD) with an empirical focus on Romance languages. In RD structures, a constituent (the dislocated phrase or D for short) appears displaced at the right edge of a syntactically, prosodically and semantically complete clause. This clause, in turn, contains a weak pronominal element, generally but not exclusively a clitic (K), which corefers with D. RD has received a fair amount of attention in the literature in Romance linguistics. Although the existing approaches are analytically somewhat diverse, they all share the assumption that RD is a monoclausal phenomenon. These are reviewed in Chapter 2 of the thesis, where I point out their merits and signal their empirical and conceptual shortcomings. This thesis constitutes a radical departure from previous analyses, and challenges the status of RD as a monoclausal phenomenon. Instead, I propose that RD constitutes an underlyingly biclausal phenomenon, where D is contained in a clause which is elided under identity with respect to the clause which hosts K. In chapter 3 I provide the evidence for this novel approach, and explores its consequences. The most serious issue with all monoclausal approaches is that they fail to account for the relation between K and D: these analyses must posit some sort of resumption, doubling, or ad hoc adjunction structure to account for the fact that these two elements are in the same clause. I thoroughly reject all of these proposals, and argue instead that the only link between D and K is purely endophoric. The analysis defended in this thesis thus treats D as a paratactic phrase with elided clausal structure. I propose that the parenthetical connection is mediated by means of a particular type of asyndetic, semantically asymmetric coordination structure. Chapter 4 deals with island effects in particular and locality issues in general. RD has always claimed to be sensitive to islands. In the literature on ellipsis, it is frequent to explain island sensitivity by positing movement of the remnant to a left peripheral position outside the domain of ellipsis. Chapter 4 makes two independent claims: (i) locality effects are explained independently of movement, and (ii) there does not exist evidence for movement of D inside the elided clause. With respect to (i), I claim that locality is a corollary of an economy condition that limits the height at which coordination can hold in elliptical contexts. As for (ii), the lack of evidence for movement of D provides an empirical argument against the widely accepted view that all remnants undergo movement outside of the ellipsis site. The analysis developed throughout this thesis brings together a natural set of phenomena that I refer to as right peripheral fragments, which include split questions and afterthoughts. These phenomena, and their relation to RD, are extensively discussed in chapter 5. I claim that under a monoclausal treatment of RD, the striking similarities between all of these phenomena cannot be captured in any simple way, and must instead be relegated into mere coincidence or anecdote. After a conclusion, an brief appendix follows where I suggest a natural extension of the analysis pursued in this dissertation to the phenomenon of clitic left dislocation.

Jean-Jacques Rousseau, despite living in the 18th century, it is different from their contemporaries by not look with optimism that the Enlightenment, considered the centuries of Lights, brought to society. As for the intellectual community the society came to an apex of moral progress and scientific developments with the Enlightenment Having as basic principle the reason, continuing the movement started by the Renaissance, that is, to use the rational knowledge against ignorance, superstition and belief. Rousseau says in his work entitled The Discourse on the sciences and the arts that science, the arts and letters alienate man from his natural state, and stifle their freedom. However, soon the philosopher is accused of contradiction, because even cursing the letters, launches the novel Julia or the New Heloise under the pretext of writing it with the end moral of protecting the readers of a society corrupted. The critique of the Rousseau was also for another reason: the novel was seen as a narrative frivolous and immoral because it is a tale of fiction, and as contrary to the rational order and the canons Aristotelian. In this way, it was necessary to analyze the emergence and the rise of the narrative romance within a cultural landscape and epistemological in contrast to classical aesthetics. Next, we investigated the entry and the originality of Rousseau in romanticism and the fracture with the classical aesthetic. Subsequently, we trace the trajectory of humanity corrupted by Rousseau in the discourse on the origin and the inequality between men, as well as the trajectory of the history of language until the language in the essay on the origin of languages, these two concepts of philosophy rousseauniana. And, finally, we tried to investigate the alleged paradox of Rousseau, like him, a critic of the letters, also be a writer of romance, and with the moral justification to retain people.

Full textWe look into the Brazilian contemporary novel in a social and historical way in this thesis. The paper starts with the discussions about the nature of the genre, passing by its changes along the western history, until reaches the Brazilian novel. Thereafter, we look for understanding the rise of the novel in Brazil to lead our analysis to the contemporary Brazilian novel produced in the last two decades. Finally, we made an analysis of the novels Relato de um certo Oriente (1989), by Milton Hatoum; Eles eram muitos cavalos (2001), by Luiz Ruffato; and Lorde (2004), by João Gilberto Noll, in order to explore three different literary ways linked to time, space and language. We also analyze the relations between novel and modernity, as well as its representation in the Brazilian contemporary novel. Among the different authors used in the studies about theory and history of the novel are Georg Lukács, Walter Benjamin, Ferenc Fehér, Lucien Goldmann, Mikhail Bakhtin, Erich Auerbach, Ian Watt, Marthe Robert, Franco Moretti, Arnold Hauser and others.
