It has been 20 years since Raewyn Connell published The Men and the Boys (2000a), which can be seen as the foundational text of boyhood studies. This journal is a good place to celebrate the twentieth anniversary of that book, and there are two special issues coming in the winter of 2020 and spring of 2021. This article argues that the concept of “hegemonic masculinity” remains highly salient to critical masculinities studies. The author outlines Raewyn Connell's initial formulation of the concept, how that initial model of hegemonic masculinity has been historically misinterpreted, the reformulation of the concept by Connell and Messerschmidt, and the recent scholarly amplification of the concept. The author concludes that Connell’s original emphasis on the legitimation of unequal gender relations remains essential to both the concept and to the field of critical masculinities studies.

This study investigates the impact of masculinity norms on the male and female characters in the novel En finir avec Eddy Bellegueule (2014) by Édouard Louis and seeks to understand how these norms affect their relations. The chapter proposes the metaphor of the carousel to explore Girls’ gendered identities, highlighting both the show’s tendency to omit crucial moments in character's plots as well as to position certain cultural types as – often insufficient – points of orientation for a character’s gender performance. The model of carousel gendering charts how characters move in and out of their critics’ (analytical) gazes, as well as run circles around certain cultural types and tropes. Drawing on the sociological framework of gender relations and hegemony by Raewyn Connell and its refinements by Mimi Schippers and Amanda Lotz, the chapter provides readings of how certain genders are positioned as preferred within the narrative.

Through an engagement with the seminal work of Raewyn Connell on masculinities and hegemonic masculinity, this chapter argues for the hegemonic norm as producing behaviour among men that can be traced in multiple male subjectivities. The argument is that men respond to the prevailing masculine norm by enacting self-protective disavowal—a complex psychological process that involves the reordering of reality in the interests of the maintenance of power, and one that is seen in cases of both legitimate and imagined threats to the self and the body. Self-protective disavowal is at the core of the Same Shit phenomenon—the idea that while the experience of masculinity varies across culture and position in the gender order, self-protective disavowal is a constant that leads to predicable patterns among men. The discussion then explores deliberate vulnerability as a kind of anti-protective disavowal in Bo Burnham’s INSIDE, a complex, undefinable ‘special’ released on Netflix in 2021. The chapter considers Burnham’s work as a departure from self-protective disavowal and Same Shit masculinity through deliberate vulnerability and critically evaluates the value of this alternative, especially given the nihilism that reigns over the work and calls into question the validity of uncritically romanticization of alternatives.

The chapter introduces a discussion about what the term 'a real man' means to interlocutors, opening up a wider consideration of hegemonic masculinity and Chinese masculinities. The study diverges from the classic interpretation of Raewyn Connell’s concept of hegemonic masculinity in one important respect. The term is usually associated with negative, toxic, sexist, oppressive male values and behaviours, but the version of hegemonic masculinity that has developed in China is identified as having an ethos that is exhibited in the social and family lives of men in diverse settings. The chapter also describes the research methodology and characteristics of the fieldwork site.

This chapter explores work experiences of female full professors in music education. By targeting this group, positions for music education as a discipline in the field of academia in conjunction with gender are being highlighted and discussed. The objective is to problematize constructions of expertise and excellence in relation to gender equality and consecrated positions within the departments where the professors in focus are working. As a theoretical framework Pierre Bourdieu’s field theory combined with Raewyn Connell’s gender theory is applied. The empirical data that underpin the study in focus consist of three focus group interviews conducted in 2018 with eight full professors in the Nordic countries. The study is inspired by narrative as a method for re-telling, and thematized collective and compiled stories from the participants’ utterances constructed for the presentation of the data. In order to handle ethical demands a meta-method-meeting was developed for the study in focus, i.e. all participants were invited to collaborate on the design of the study, keeping transparency, ethics and anonymity in focus. The findings suggest that the professors’ agency for claiming a core position at their departments, respectively, is dependent on what local gatekeepers consecrate as symbolic capital for the acknowledgement of expertise and excellence.
